(1) General Maung Aye arrives Kengtung
YANGON, 8 Jan - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, accompanied by Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint, Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Rear-Admiral Kyi Min, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Quartermaster-General Lt-Gen Tin Hla, ministers, senior military officers and officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office and the respective departments, left here by air for Kengtung in Shan State East on 5 January.
On arrival at Kengtung Airport, the General and party were welcomed by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Shan State East Peace and Development Council Commander of Triangle Region Command Maj-Gen Thein Sein, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Myint Swe, military officers and division level officials. The General and party then went to Golden Triangle Guest House of the command where they spent the night.

Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye inspected development and agricultural undertakings in Kengtung Township in Shan State East on 6 January.
Accompanied by Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint, Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Rear-Admiral Kyi Min, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Quartermaster-General Lt-Gen Tin Hla, member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Shan State East Peace and Development Council Commander of Triangle Region Command Maj-Gen Thein Sein, ministers, senior military officers and officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office and the respective
departments, the General inspected progress in extending the runway at the Kengtung Airport. Superintending Engineer of Public Works U Thaung Htay reported to the General on progress in
extending the runway, joined in by Commander Maj-Gen Thein Sein and Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun. The General and party then observed the vegetable farms of the respective! e
departments in Kengtung Township in a motorcade.
During the inspection of Shan Yoma Sugar Mill and Shwe Thanlwin Edible Oil Mill of the command, the General heard a report on the products and operation of the two mills presented by Commander Maj-Gen Thein Sein. Launched on 16 February 1999, the sugar mill is producing 501 viss of brown sugar per day.
The oil mill opened on 16 September 1999 is producing 250 viss of groundnut oil daily. The next day, the General and party inspected pesinngon cultivation of the command and the produce. The General and party also inspected the three rice mills set up by the Camp Commandant's Office of the command. General Maung Aye left instructions.
Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, who accompanied the General, inspected Border Areas and National Races Development Training School in Kengtung. He visited the messing hall, kitchen and crops fields in the compound. Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein inspected construction of a 200-bed hospital in Kengtung. Members of the Central Executive Committee of Union Solidarity and Development Association Brig-Gen Pyi Sone and Col Thein Nyunt met secretaries and executives of Shan State (East), Kengtung District and Kengtung Township USDAs in Kengtung. They also accepted USDA applications.

(2) Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air) Golf Tournament begins
YANGON, 8 - A ceremony to open the 2000-2001 Defence Services Commander-in-Chief's Trophy Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Golf Tournament was held at Golden Triangle Golf Course in Kengtung, Shan State, on 6 January morning.
On behalf of the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye teed off at the opening ceremony. Also
present were Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Rear-Admiral Kyi Min, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than, Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint, Quartermaster-General Lt-Gen Tin Hla, Commander of Triangle Region Command Maj-Gen Thein Sein, ministers, senior military officers, golf teams of Navy, Air and military commands and LIDs.
2000-2001 Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Golf Tournament concludes
YANGON, 8 Jan- Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye took part in the second and final day of the 2000-2001 Defence Services Commander-in-Chief's Trophy Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Golf Tournament which was held at Golden Triangle
Golf Course in Kengtung on 7 January morning.
Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Rear-Admiral Kyi Min, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than, Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint, Quartermaster-General Lt-Gen Tin Hla, Commander of Triangle Region Command Maj-Gen Thein Sein, ministers, senior military officers, golf teams of military commands, LIDs, Tatmadaw (Navy) and Tatmadaw (Air) also took part in the tournament.
The prize presentation ceremony for the tournament was held yesterday at Pyinyeinaye Hall of the command headquarters at 7.15 p.m. Present were Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye and party. On behalf of the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services, Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint presented championship trophy to the winning team. Staff Officer (Grade-II) (A) Maj Thein Naing read out the agenda of the ceremony.
Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Rear-Admiral Kyi Min presented first, second and third prizes to Tatmadaw (Navy) team with 568 strokes, Triangle Region Command team with 575 and Western Command team with 603 respectively in the team handicap event and prizes for consolation to Tatmadaw (Air) team in the handicap event and Central Command team in the scratch event Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than presented first, second and third prizes to Southern Command team with 663 strokes, North-East Command team with 696 and South-West Command team with 700 respectively in the team scratch event.
On behalf of the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services, Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint presented championship trophy to Tatmadaw (Navy) team. Quartermaster-General Lt-Gen Tin Hla presented first, second and third prizes to Lt Zaw Min of Tatmadaw (Navy) team with 132 strokes, Maj Soe Soe Zaw of Triangle Region Command team with 132 and Lt Nyan Koe of Southern Command team with 133 respectively in the individual handicap event. Commander Maj-Gen Thein Sein presented
first, second and third prizes to Sgt Myint Thein of Southern Command team with 157 strokes, Sgt Zaw Win of Southern Command team with 157 and Sgt Win Naing of North-East Command team with 163 respectively in the individual scratch event. Commander Maj-Gen Thein Sein also presented best scorer awards of daily and longest driving and nearest to the pin awards to respective winners. Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Myint Swe presented par and birdie awards to respective winners.
After the ceremony, Golden Triangle Music Troupe and girls presented music and songs. Then, the General presented the flower basket to the music troupe and girls and posed for documentary photo together with the troupe and girls. Later, Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint had documentary photo taken together with championship trophy winner Tatmadaw (Navy) team.

(3) Secretary-1 looks into regional development tasks in Kachin State, inspects 2000-ton fine quality massive jade stone
YANGON, 8 Jan - Chairman of the Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and National Races Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected development tasks in Putao and Myitkyina in Kachin State yesterday.
The Secretary-1, accompanied by ministers, the Chief of Staff (Air), deputy ministers, the director-general of the State Peace and Development Council Office and heads of department, left here for
Myitkyina by Tatmadaw aircraft yesterday morning.
They were welcomed by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Kachin State Peace and Development Council Commander of Northern Command Maj-Gen Kyaw Win, Brig-Gen Khin Maung Myint of Mogaung Station, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen San Tun and military and
civilian officials, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, national race leader of Kachin State Special Region-1 U Za Khun Ting Ring and party, national race leader of Special Region-2 U Lamon Tu Gyaing and U Zaung Khaya and party and local national people.
The Secretary-1 and party, together with Commander Maj-Gen Kyaw Win, left for Putao by Tatmadaw aircraft and arrived there in the afternoon. At the airport of Putao, they were welcomed by Tactical Operations Commander Col Han Myint, district and township authorities, departmental officials, USDA members and local national people. The Secretary-1 and party went to the basic education middle school affiliated to Putao Basic Education High School in Nanhot Village in Mamule Village-tract, Putao
Township.
The Secretary-1 and party had a cordial meeting with the students and attended to requirements of the school. Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party greeted local national people.
Next, the Secretary-1 met with district-level departmental officials at Khakaborazi Yeiktha in Putao and discussed regional development tasks. Officials reported on matters related to agriculture, livestock breeding, health, education and transport. Commander Maj-Gen Kyaw Win, Deputy Minister for
Progress of Border Areas and National Races Brig-Gen Than Tun, Deputy Minister for Health Professor Dr Mya Oo and Deputy Minister for Education U Myo Nyunt gave supplementary reports.
The Secretary-1 urged all to make concerted efforts for the regional development. He gave instructions on making the region a tourist attraction, carrying out livestock breeding and agriculture work on a
manageable scale and undertaking regional development tasks. Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party proceeded to BEHS in Putao.
The Secretary-1 inspected the multimedia teaching centre comprising the science room, agricultural and painting room, domestic science room and learning centres at the schools and gave instructions. Next, the Secretary-1 and party inspected Putao airport and gave instructions on upgrading the airport.
The Secretary-1 also attended the closing ceremony of Kachin State Student Sports Festival at the sports ground in Myitkyina at 5 p.m. Also present were Commander Maj-Gen Kyaw Win, the ministers,
the Chief of Staff (Air), the deputy ministers, the heads of the State Peace and Development Council Office and departments, Kachin State, district and township authorities and officials, township education officers, teachers, guests and students exceeding 5,000.
The Secretary-1 and party also attended Kachin Traditional New Harvest Feast and Thanksgiving Ceremony at Malikha Yeiktha in Myitkyina in the evening. The Secretary-1 and party spent the night at Myitkyina. The Secretary-1 and party, together with Commander Maj-Gen Kyaw Win, left Naungnan Village in Myitkyina this morning and arrived at Phakant at 11.10 am.
The Secretary-1 met with township-level departmental officials at the office of Phakant Township Peace and Development Council and discussed development tasks of the town. Tactical Operations
Commander Col Tin Shein reported on construction of Utu Creek Bridge in Phakant and departmental officials on health, education and economic matters. The Secretary-1 urged all to work hard for the development of all the sectors. He also gave instructions on the thriving of business, the levying of taxes, providing assistance for local people and making concerted efforts for the development of the town. Next, the Secretary-1 and party went to Block No 1 jointly run by Myanma Gems Enterprise and Kyauksein Naga (Gems) Company Ltd of Special Region-6 PaO Peace Group at Phakantgyi Hmaw in Lonkhin Phakant Gems Land. The Secretary-1 inspected the mining work and jade.
Then, the Secretary-1 and party proceeded to Nanthmaw Mining Block of Special Region-6 PaO Peace Group and inspected a jade stone, 70 feet long, 20 feet high and 16 width. That jade stone was situated about 40 feet below the ground. It is of good quality and weighs over 2,000 tons. It is likely to find another Dykes where that jade stone was found.
Later, the Secretary-1 and party observed jade stones mined at Nanthmaw Mining Block. U Aye Win Tun of Kyauksein Naga (Gems) Company donated K 5 million to the fund for development tasks of Kachin State, K 1 million to Putao BEHS and K 1 million to the affiliated BEMS in Nantmaw Village. The Secretary-1 and party left Phakant for Myitkyina by helicopter and arrived there in the afternoon.
Afterwards, the Secretary-1 attended the ceremony to donate gold of the business jointly run by Northern Command, Kachin State Peace and Development Council and Northern Star Company Ltd.
Also present were Commander Maj-Gen Kyaw Win, the ministers, the Chief of Staff (Air), the deputy ministers, the heads of the State Peace and Development Council Office and departments, Kachin
State, district and township authorities and officials. Commander Maj-Gen Kyaw Win presented 10 viss of gold mined in Kachin State.
The Secretary-1 accepted the donation. The Secretary-1 said that it is found that Kachin State is making a lot of progress due to supervision of local authorities and concerted efforts of departmental employees and local people. Now there is sufficiency of rice in Kachin State and measures are being taken to ensure sufficiency of oil. Kachin State produces many natural resources and the production of jade is successful. It is also encouraging to see that efforts are being made for the development of agriculture,
livestock breeding and other sectors.
In conclusion, the Secretary-1 urged departmental employees to work in unison for the development of Kachin State. The Secretary-1 and party left Myitkyina by Tatmadaw aircraft and arrived back here this evening. Deputy Minister for Health Professor Dr Mya Oo, who accompanied the Secretary-1, also
visited Putao Hospital and met with officials.

(4) Secretary-1 attends Kachin traditional new harvest feast, New Year Thanksgiving ceremony
YANGON, 8 Jan-Kachin traditional new harvest feast hosted by Rev U Sabwe John of Kachin Baptist Association and New Year Thanksgiving ceremony was held at Malikha Yeiktha on 7 January, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. Also present were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Kachin State Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Kyaw Win, ministers, the director-general of the State Peace and Development Council Office, members of State, District and Township Peace and Development Councils, U Za Khun Ting Ring of Special Region-1 and national race leaders, U La Mon
Tu Gyaing and U Zaung Khara, national race delegates, Rev U Sabwe John and officials.
The Secretary-1, the commander, ministers, U Za Khun Ting Ring of Special Region-1 and U Zaw Naing of Special Region-2 were welcomed with fireworks. Rev U Hsin Gaung blessed the gathering. Rev U Sabwe John extended greetings. The Secretary-1 expressed his pleasure to attend Kachin traditional harvest feast on the auspicious occasion.
He felt pleased that his trip was a enjoyable one for himself and friends in Kachin State. He said praying for peace and prosperity in Kachin State and the Union together with Kachin nationals is national concern and promotes the Union spirit. He said a ceremony to drive stake for Nyeinchanyay Geha to mark peace, auspiciousness and national solidarity in Kachin State will be held. He spoke on emergence of the harvesting feast and its good traditions.
He said meeting with national races strengthens the essence of national solidarity and national determination to bring about national development. He said safeguarding traditional festivals, customs
and religions indicates prestige of the national races and reservation of lineage and government's encouragement to perpetuation of own culture and customs. The Secretary-1 said there are over
hundred national races in Myanmar and they have freedom of religion.
As a result, friendship and trustworthy and the Union Spirit have developed among the national races, he added. He said basically culture and customs of national races are the same and there were no conflict on culture, race and religion in the long course of the history. He also elaborated on overcoming the doubt existed among the national races, mutual respect, goodwill, understanding and confidence and development in the Kachin State.
He welcomed the construction of Nyeinchanyay Geha reflecting the strengthening of national solidarity and peace and tranquillity in Kachin State. At the Geha development course for the youths and course for maintenance of law and order will be conducted in accord with rules and regulations laid down by the government, he said. Arrangements are to be made for people to enjoy peace as Nyeinchangyay Park. He urged all to make endeavour for peace, solidarity and progress in Kachin State.
Next, fireworks, release of hot air balloons and floating of 5,000 lights took place. Rev U Hla Myint blessed the gathering and the high-ranking officials. Kachin traditional music was presented to the audience. The Secretary-1 presented new year gifts to Rev U Sabwe John, national race leaders U Zaw Mai and U Za Khun Ting Ring. The Secretary-1 and party together with national races and delegates enjoyed the harvest feast. The Secretary-1 then presented flower basket to traditional cultural troupe.
After the ceremony, the Secretary-1 had photo taken together with members of traditional cultural troupe and Kachin national race leaders. This morning, the Secretary-1, accompanied by Commander Maj-Gen Kyaw Win, went to Manaw field. The Secretary-1 inspected construction of Manaw Square. The
Secretary-1 and party went to the site for driving stake of Nyeinchanyay Geha. They were welcomed by departmental officials, national delegates led by U Za Khun Ting Ring of Special Region-1, Rev Sabwe John and local people. Rev U Sabwe John extended greetings and U Paw Lu reported on scale model, areas and conditions.
Then, the Secretary-1 said holding of the stake driving ceremony of the building has good presage. Development legged behind due to armed conflicts erupted through suspicions which in reality are the
results of differences in opinions. There were no peace in the nation as efforts were made by the past successive governments to win peace failed. The Tatmadaw government has striven to win back peace as it understands that the national development can be gained only through the united efforts of the national people.
Due to the efforts that were made with mutual understanding, trust and amity, magnimanity and sympathy between the national people, peace could be made with national groups one after another;
thus, peace is prevailing in entire nation at present. Peace is prevailing in Kachin State due to the harmonious endeavours of the government, leaders of Kachin nationals, peace loving religious leaders, influential local elders and peace negotiators based on mutual trust and understanding and magnimanity.
The people of Kachin State are witnessing developments within a short period as peace and loving kindness is prevailing in the region. He thanked the Kachin people for building the Nyeinchanye Geha
which will enable the posterity to know the good results of peace and efforts to regain peace and which will promote their will to maintain peace.
He urged all the national people of the Union to strive to perpetuate the peace and stability of the nation for flourishing of the good results which are peace and happiness and improvement of social standards till future generations. Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Commander Maj-Gen Kyaw Win, ministers and national race leaders drove in the stake. Doves were freed and prayers said for peace. The Secretary-1 signed in the visitor's book.

(5) Military band members urged to try to be able to evoke spirit of loving nation and race in national people
YANGON, 8 Jan - Chairman of the Leading Committee for Observance of the 56th Anniversary of Armed Forces Day Patron of the Tenth Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Military Band Competition Chief of Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo addressed the opening ceremony
of the Tenth Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Military Band Competition. The Secretary-2 said that the Tenth Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Military Band Competition to be held in commemoration of the 56th Anniversary of the Armed Forces Day was opened today, so it is a day which the State and the Tatmadaw should be proud of.
The Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) military band competitions have been held since 1992 with the aim of uplifting the spirit of national defence with the military band, enabling Myanmar military bands to attain the international level and improving military bands in the nation. In building a modern, developed and new nation, just as the Tatmadaw is being upgraded into a strong, capable and Modern one, so also the Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) military bands are being expanded with the aim of improving the military bands qualitatively, uplifting morale, holding grand military parades and improving military bands.
As a result, it is found that 51 military bands have entered the competition. It is encouraging to see that the quality of military bands of commands, battalions, operation control commands and military training schools is improving as a result of holding the Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) military band competitions every year.
The military bands enhance the dignity of the State and the Tatmadaw, and all have undergone training with the motto " from quantity to quality" to take part in the competition; therefore, all need to compete with undaunted spirit. The military band is one of the important psychological weapons for the Tatmadaw; the marching songs sung to the accompaniment of the military band can uplift the morale of the Tatmadaw members and also frighten the enemy; in view of the history of Myanmar, the people of
Myanmar skilful in military affairs marched by beating the short drums and used the system of raising alarm by beating drums and gongs; it is learnt that in 704 during Pinya Period, King Ngasishin Kyaw Swa and his soldiers were well-versed in military tactics and marched by singing martial songs.
All are to serve the interests of the State and the Tatmadaw with martial music. Since its inception, the Tatmadaw has safeguarded the interests of the State. In view of the historical lessons, the State and all the national people are to uphold Our Three Main National Causes, the State Policy, non-disintegration of the Union, non-disintegration of national solidarity and perpetuation of sovereignty; to safeguard the State Policy for ever, the Tatmadaw is undergoing restructuring with four tasks training, administration,
welfare and morale.
Among the four tasks, the fourth one morale is of main importance; the battalion formed with soldiers of strong spirit and courage is loyal to the State and the Tatmadaw; all are to try to become good sons of the Tatmadaw who are able to discharge duties assigned by the State. All are also to try to be able to evoke in the entire people the spirit of loving the nation and the race and rooting out internal and external destructive elements. In conclusion, the Secretary-2 urged all to become members of the military band on whom the State and the Tatmadaw can rely.

(6) Secretary-2 attends opening of annual meeting of Myanmar Livestock Federation

YANGON, 8 Jan - Myanmar Livestock Federation held its annual meeting at the International Business Centre this morning. Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo attended it. Myanmar Veterinary Medicine Council also presented registration certificates to veterinary surgeons at the ceremony.
Also present at the meeting were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department, the chairman of the Council and members, the president of the Federation and executives, representatives of states and divisions, veterinary surgeons and guests. Speaking on the occasion, the Secretary-2 said there are over 3,200 veterinary surgeons in Myanmar; the Veterinary Medicine Council Law has been promulgated to ensure systematic livestock breeding and veterinary tasks. The role of veterinary surgeons is important in promoting the meat and
fish sector.
Their role is also very important in striving for progress of poultry farming being carried out on manageable, medium and commercial scales and the breeding of chicken strains that are suitable to the
weather and other conditions of Myanmar. Veterinary surgeons should conduct research to prevent outbreak of diseases from other countries in Myanmar, reduce spread of animal diseases which the people can contract and preserve the local strains of draught cattle. The private sector accounts for 99% of the meat production sector in Myanmar; thus, the role of the private entrepreneurs is very important in striving for the development of the meat sector; the livestock breeding federation is to perform the
necessary tasks with farsightedness. Requirements for exporting meat and fish products need to be studied, and necessary measures need to be taken in advance. MLF and respective state and division committees were formed in order to! collectively strive for progress of livestock breeding projects region-wise.
They should also render assistance speedily to breeders and distributors. Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than explained entrepreneurs' efforts to develop of livestock breeding and fishery industries in accord with the State's livestock policies. Minister Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein reported to the meeting on poultry farming, the need to raise healthy animals free from contagious diseases and the State's farming policies. After the meeting, livestock and veterinary medicines exhibition was opened.
The Secretary-2 and party inspected the booths of the exhibition. Then, registration certificates were presented to 407 veterinary surgeons. The meeting continues till 10 January. Six papers will be read.

(7) Appointment of Ambassador agreed on
YANGON, 9 Jan-The Government of the Union of Myanmar has agreed to the proposed appointment of Mr Oleg F Chekunkov as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Belarus to the Union of Myanmar. Mr Oleg Chekunkov was born in 1958 and graduated from the Minsk State institute of Foreign Languages in 1980 and Academy of Foreign Trade of the Soviet Union in 1991. He served in the Army from 1980 to 1983 and also worked at the Ministry of Communication System from 1983 to 1988. He was employed at the State Committee on Foreign Economic Relations in 1991 up to 1993 and then served as Senior Expert of Trade representative of the Trade representation of Belarus to Vietnam till 1996. First Meeting of National Focal Points Working Group on Peas and Beans Promotion Scheme held
YANGON,8 Jan - A ceremony to open the First Meeting of the National Focal Points Working Group on Peas and Beans the Promotion Scheme was held at the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation this morning.
Present on the occasion were Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung, Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, delegates of ASEAN members Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia which cultivate peas and beans, officials of the ASEAN Secretariat, ambassadors of Laos, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines,
Singapore, Vietnam and Japan and officials, the president and the vice-president of Myanmar Academy of Agriculture, Forest, Livestock Breeding and Fisheries Association, officials of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Cooperatives, the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and industry and the Myanmar Pulses and Beans and Sesame Merchants Association and guests.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin said that Myanmar ranks third in the world trade of peas and beans export; Myanmar prospect of reaching second place soon; efforts are being made for cultivation and production of peas and beans with added momentum and all delegates of ASEAN nations can exchange experience in cultivation and production of quality strains of peas and beans. Then, delegates viewed pulses and beans exhibited by Ministry of Agriculture
and Irrigation and posed for documentary photo. Afterwards, Managing Director U Tun Than of Myanma Agriculture Service presided over the meeting to ether with Acting Managing Director U San Myint of Myanma Farms Enterprise. Delegates took part in the discussions. The meeting continues tomorrow.

Second meeting of experts on energy sector of BIMST-EC held

Minister inspects Terminal Thilawa, Thakayta Wharf
YANGON, 8 Jan- Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, accompanied by Deputy Minister U Pe Than, Managing Director U Thein Htay of Myanma Port Authority and Director-General U Soe Win of Marine Administration Department, arrived at Phanchet Jetty of Myanmar International Terminal, Thilawa, this morning. Deputy Minister U Pe Than and Managing Director U Thein Htay reported on safe waterway for ocean-going liners in Yangon River. The minister gave necessary instructions. In the afternoon, the minister and party arrived at Thakayta Wharf of Myanma Five Star Line and inspected the training courses conducted at the wharf. The minister also inspected cultivation of vegetables and fish and prawn breeding ponds at Thakayta Wharf.

YANGON, 8 Jan - Opening ceremony of Myanmar Health Research Congress was held at the meeting hall of Medical Research Department (Lower Myanmar) this morning with an opening address by Deputy Minister for Health Dr Kyaw Myint.
It was attended by directors-general, deputy directors general of departments under the ministry, rectors, medical superintendents, professors, officers of directorate of medical services, Ministry of
Defence, Resident Representative Dr Agostino Borra, Chairman Dr U Ko Ko of Myanmar Academy of Medical Science, Chairperson Dr Daw Kyu Kyu Swe of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare
Association and advisers and resource persons. First, the deputy minister made a speech. Afterwards, paper reading session was held. Altogether fourteen papers were read at the congress today. The congress will be held till 12 January.

Stone Sculptor U Taw Taw and sons continued carving the image, and decoration works were carried out by Myanmar handicraft technicians U Ohn Tin and group, and U
Hla Kyu and group. Devotees, pilgrims, members of the Sangha from far and near paid obeisance and donated cash to the image.
In memory of late Lt-Gen Sein Aung (Retd), Daw Khin Thein and family of Shwetaunggya Yeiktha in Bahan Township donated K 300,000 for all-round construction of the image to Director-General of Religious Affairs Department Dr Myo Myint. Bookshops of Ministry of Religious Affairs, News and Periodicals Enterprise and Sarpay Beikman sold various kinds of books on knowledge and aesthetics, and calendars. Donation Centre is opened from 7 am to 9 p.m. daily and donations made by the public have amounted to K 123,686,897 from 5 August 2000 to date.

Deputy Minister for Information visits Independence Day Exhibition
YANGON, 8 Jan-Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein visited the 53rd Anniversary Independence Day Exhibition at Tatmadaw Convention Hall on U Wizara Road in Dagon Township today. Chairman of Sub-committee for Organizing the 53rd Anniversary Independence Day Exhibition Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein arrived at Tatmadaw Convention Hall this afternoon. He was welcomed and conducted around the exhibition by member of the Sub-committee Director-General of Information and Public Relations Department U Chit Naing, the secretary of the Sub-committee director of IPRD and members. After greeting the students who visited the exhibition, the Deputy Minister viewed the booths. News and Periodicals Enterprise Bookshop and Sarpay Beikman Bookshop are opened at the exhibition which will be opened from 9 am to 5 p.m. till 11 January. Admission is free.
Minister attends opening of training courses
YANGON, 8 Jan- A ceremony to open the Personal Computer for Office Applications Course, the FETEX- 150 CBT Maintenance Course and the Basic PCM Course was held at the ommunications and Postal Training Centre this morning, with an address by Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraph Brig-Gen Win Tin. Also present were officials of Directorate of telecommunications, Myanma Posts and Telecommunications, the principal, instructors and trainees. The minister gave an opening address.

(9) Drug possessor gets 25 years
YANGON, 8 Jan-A combined team comprising members of the local intelligence unit and Yangon Special Anti-drug Squad searched the house of Aung Moe in Danatheikdi Street, No 2 Ward, Mayangon Township and seized 543 grams in the earthern pot and the cupboard in the bedroom. Action was taken
against Aung Moe, son of U Kyaw Myint who lives at No 18 Danatheikdi Street, No 2 Ward, Mayangon Township, under section 15/19 (A) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psycho-tropic Substances Law. Yangon West District Court heard the case and sentenced him to 5 years' imprisonment under Section 15 and
25 years under Section 19 (A) to serve concurrently on 30 November 2000.
29 Myittha Township NLD members resign of own accord
YANGON, 8 Jan-Twenty-nine members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Myittha Township, Mandalay Division. Twenty-nine members of Myittha NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Myittha Township Multiparty Democracy General
Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 29 July 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
