(1) Secretary-1 attends ceremony to lay cornerstones of Sein Yadana Sankyaung and Shanlay Sasana   Beikman of Shweminwun Sasana Yeiktha (Bago)

YANGON, 4 Feb-Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Committee Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended  ceremony to lay cornerstone of Sein Yadana Sankyaung and Shanlay Sasana Beik-man of Shweminwun  Sasana Yeiktha (Bago) in Sarthange Village in Bago Township, Bago Division this morning.

The Secretary-1 presented a nine-gem casket to Presiding Nayaka Sayadaw of Shweminwun Sasana Yeiktha Maha Kammahtanacariya Bhaddanta Sobhana. The Sayadaw presented the casket to the
Secretary-1. The Secretary-1 laid the casket at the designated place. The Secretary-1 and ministers laid the foundation. The Secretary-1 laid the stone inscription and sprinkled scented water on it. A ceremony to
lay cornerstone of Yadana Sankyaung was held The  Secretary-1 presented a nine-gem casket to Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhana. The Sayadaw presented the  casket to the Secretary-1.

The Secretary-1 laid the casket at the respective place. The Secretary- 1 and ministers laid the foundation. The Secretary-1 laid the stone inscription and sprinkled scented water on it. The Secretary-1 then
performed  rituals of golden and silver showers.

The second cash donation ceremony was then held. The congregation received the Eight Precepts from Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhana. The  Secretary-1 and the ministers and party presented offertories to the
members of the Sangha. Commander  Maj-Gen Tin Aye presented K 100,000 for lake, tube well and water purifier, PMG Co K 10 million, Great  Super Happiness Co Ltd K 5 million for the Sasana drum
and U Khin Maung Hla - Daw Khin Kyi Htay K 3.3  million for water tank, road and bridge. The Secretary-1 accepted the donations. Wellwishers presented K  42,530,440 to the commander and the
ministers. Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhana delivered a sermon,  followed by sharing of merits. The Secretary-1 and party visited the Sasana Yeiktha.


(2) Secretary-1 attends opening of multimedia teaching centre of No 2 BEHS in Bago

YANGON, 4 Feb-A ceremony to open the multimedia teaching centre of No 2 Basic Education High School in  Bago Township was held at the school this afternoon, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Education  Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

First, Headmaster U Kyaw Aye and Chairman of the school board of trustees U Kyin Wun formally opened  the centre. Next, the Secretary-1 formally unveiled the signboard of the centre.

Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party inspected the electronic media room, the projected media room, the computer-aided instruction room, the reading corner, the electronic media room, the domestic science
room,  the art studio, and watched the skill demonstration of the students.

Then, the ceremony to mark the opening of the multimedia teaching centre was held at the hall of the school.  First, students performed dances. Later, the headmaster reported on tasks carried out for the opening of the  centre. Vice-Chairman of the school board of trustees U Soe Myint reported on endeavours for the opening of  the centre. The Secretary-1 presented video and cassette tapes to the headmaster.

Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and the commander accepted donations for the school K3.24 million by wellwishers.  In his speech, the Secretary- 1 thanked local authorities, wellwishers and members of the school board of trustees for their generous contribution towards the opening of the multimedia teaching centre of No 2 Basic Education High School in Bago. Success has been achieved to a considerable extent in  implementing education promotion programmes, and it can be attributed to the participation of the people.

After the ceremony, the Secretary-1 and party, together with members of the school board of trustees, teachers and students, had photos taken.


(3) Secretary-1 inspects development and cultural tasks in Bago

YANGON, 4 Feb - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, together with  the ministers, the deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office and heads  of department, attended the cornerstone-laying ceremony of Sein Yadana Sankyaung and Shanlay Maha  Sasana Beikmandawgyi and the second donation ceremony at Sarthange Village, Thayagon
Village-tract,  Bago Township, Bago Division, this morning.

The Secretary-1 laid cornerstones for the construction of Sein Yadana Sankyaung and Shanlay Maha Sasana  Beikmandawgyi and accepted donations. Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party, accompanied by
the  commander, went to Shwemawdaw Pagoda in Bago.

The Secretary-1 and party paid homage to the pagoda and inspected the condition of the pagoda. Then, the  Secretary-1 met with scholars and members of the pagoda board of trustees and gave instructions.
Next, the Secretary-1 and party proceeded to Dhamma Linkara Monastery in Bago. They paid homage and  offered alms to Agga Maha Saddhama Jotikadhaja Bhaddanta Visuddha Dhammalinkara Sayadaw.
Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party attended the opening ceremony of No 2 Basic Education High School in  Bago.

Then, the Secretary-1 and party attended the donation ceremony for construction of prayer halls of Seinthalyaung Buddha Image and accepted the donations. Deputy Superintending Engineer of Special Building Construction Project Group-5 U Kyi Tun reported on progress of  construction work of the prayer halls. Division Commissioner of Bago Division General Administration  Department U Chit Maung explained matters related to donations and use of funds.

The Secretary-1 gave instructions. The Secretary-1 and party accepted K 6,597,870 for all-round renovation of  Seinthalyaung Buddha Image by wellwishers.

The Secretary-1 and party inspected construction of Seinthalyaung Tazaung. The Secretary-1 and party went  to Kanbawzathadi Palace of King Bayintnaung. Minister for Culture U Win Sein reported on
excavation and  reconstruction of the palace, Deputy Superintending Engineer U Kyi Tun on construction of the palace,  Director-General of Archaeology  Department U Nyunt Han on excavation of the palace
and greening and Myanmar Historian Dr Khin Maung  Nyunt and History Professor U Kyaw Win on historical data.

The Secretary-1 said construction of Bamayathana Throne hall of King Bayintnaung's Kanbawzathadi Palace  has now completed and Myenanpyatthat is near completion. He said it will become a tourist
attraction place  and gave instructions on completion of the tasks for greening of its environs. The Secretary-1 and party  inspected construction of  Myenanpyatthat. They arrived back here in the evening.


(4) Secretary-2 inspects agriculture and livestock breeding work, Flower Fair, Horticulture Show

YANGON, 4 Feb-Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt- Gen Tin Oo this morning inspected agriculture and livestock breeding work of local regiment in Mingaladon Township, Flower Fair
and  Horticulture Show and gave instructions.

First, the Secretary-2 accompanied by Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa and officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office inspected production of plastic pipes of local regiment in Mingaladon and
left  instructions on worksite safety this morning. Then, the Secretary-2 and party inspected fish breeding and  raising of pigs of the regiment. There the Secretary-2 inspected thriving of vegetable plantations and
gave  instructions to the officials.

The Secretary-2 and party proceeded to the Flower Fair of Myanma Agriculture Service being exhibited at  Mingaladon Park and inspected the booths of flowers and gave instructions. Afterwards, the Secretary-
2 and  party inspected ninth Horticulture Show of Yangon City  Development Committee being shown at Mindhamma Ground, corner of Mindhamma Street and Tawwin  Street, Mayangon Township, where they were welcomed and conducted round the show by Head of Parks  and Playgrounds Department U Nyunt Pe and officials.


(5) Secretary-2 presents prizes to winners of 12th Disabled Sports Meets

YANGON, 4 Feb-Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt- Gen Tin Oo attended the 12th  Disabled Sports Meets sponsored by Myanmar Disabled Sports Federation at Aung San Stadium this morning.

Also present were Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint,  and  officials of sports federations, guests and teams.

Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint delivered a speech.  Athletes took sport oaths and the events began.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo presented prizes to first, second and third prize winners of the track event. Minister  Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, President of Myanmar Disabled Sports Federation Director of
Resettlement of the Ministry of Defence Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Director- General of Sports and Physical Education Department U Thaung Htaik and Patron of Myanmar Women's Sports Federation Daw Khin
Myo  Oo also presented prizes to first, second and third prize winners.

Secretary-2 visits fluorescent lamp factory

YANGON, 4 Feb - The government is giving encouragement and assistance to investors with a view to ensuring the successful running of their businesses; it is also necessary to manufacture fluorescent lamps
of high quality and sell them at reasonable prices; efforts are to be made to put them on the market not only  in the nation but also abroad; research on manufacturing fluorescent lamps with the use of raw materials readily available in the nation, is to be carried out, instructed Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt- Gen Tin Oo while inspecting progress of construction work of the fluorescent lamp  factory of Royal Green Manufacturing Ltd in Shwepyitha Industrial Zone-3, Shwepyitha Township, this  morning.

The Secretary-2 also called on officials to attach great importance to worksite safety and welfare work for employees. The officials of the factory reported on progress of work, and Managing Director U Sein Wan reported on salient points of the factory. Construction of the factory began on 14 July 2000, and over 90 per  cent of installation of  machinery has been completed. Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi reported on supply of liquefied gas and  Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin on arrangements to ensure the smooth manufacturing of  fluorescent lamps. Royal Green Manufacturing Ltd will soon manufacture and distribute fluorescent lamps of  international quality.

U Myo Myint appointed as Ambassador to Thailand

YANGON, 4 Feb- The Chairman of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of  Myanmar has appointed U Myo Myint, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the
Union of Myanmar  to the Republic of Singapore, as Ambassador Extraordinary and  Plenipotentiary of the Union of Myanmar to the King of Thainland.

Chinese delegation concludes visit

YANGON, 4 Feb- The visiting Chinese delegation led by Mr Xu Dunxin, Member of the Standing Committee of  the National People's Congress of the People's Republic of China and Vice-Chairman of the
NPC Foreign  Affairs Committee, left here by air this afternoon.

The delegation was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin  Maung Win, Chinese Ambassador Mr Liang Dong and embassy staff and officials of the Ministry of Foreign  Affairs. The Chinese delegation this morning visited Thanlyin Bridge and had documentary photo taken in  front of the monument of the bridge in commemoration of the Chinese-Myanmar friendly relationship.

Minister inspects construction of dams in Bago Division

YANGON, 4 Feb- Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, accompanied by officials, inspected  Gamon Dam being built on Gamon Creek 12 miles east of Gyobingauk, Bago Division (West),
yesterday  morning. Director U Tin Maung Ohn of Irrigation Department reported on the site chosen for construction of  the dam, water storage and supply.

Director-General U Kyaw San Win of Irrigation Department and directors reported on geological conditions  and design of the dam. The minister then inspected the site for the dam and sample stone and
sand from  surrounding areas of the dam. Afterwards, the minister arrived at Bawbin Dam Project being built by  Construction-2 of Irrigation  Department. They inspected construction of the conduit and the
main embankment.

In the briefing hall of Bawbin Dam project, the director of  Construction-2 of Irrigation Department reported on construction of the main dam and 27 embankments on  Thayet Creek near Thakhutbin Village, Gyobingauk Township, the new dam under construction on Bawbin  Creek in Bawbin Village of Zigon Township and arrangements to connect the main dam and the supporting  dam. Director-General U Kyaw San Win and  officials also reported on construction of new dams and preliminary survey.

Then, the minister inspected  construction of the main dam, the supporting dam and the conduit. In the evening, the minister went to the  site of Minhla Dam to be built in Okpo Township. The minister inspected condition for construction of the  dam and the creek and availability of water, and gave instructions on timely completion of construction tasks,  regional development and irrigation of multiple cropping areas.

Minister inspects Distillery Factory, Paper Mill

YANGON, 4 Feb-Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, accompanied by officials, arrived at No 3 Distillery of  Myanma Foodstuff Industries in Bilin, Mon State, yesterday, and inspected production process of the factory.  The minister also inspected 66,000-gallon-capacity distillery tanks, storage of materials, packing of bottles  and fire prevention measures. In the briefing hall, the minister met the factory manager and officials and gave  instructions on policies of the ministry to be followed and efforts to be made for exceeding the production  target in 2000-2001 fiscal year.

In the afternoon, the minister proceeded to No 1 Paper Mill of Myanma Paper and Chemical Industries in Sittoung, Kyaikto Township. The minister inspected transport of bamboo from bamboo raft in Sittoung
River.  The minister also inspected Sittoung river water pumping in Mokkamowt Village one mile from the paper  mill, arrangements for water supply to the mill and power station. After that, the minister
inspected major repair of No 2 Boiler at the Water, Steam and Power Plant. At the hall of the plant, the minister met officials of the plant and left necessary instructions.

Minister donates TV sets to BEHSs in Kyaukse

YANGON, 4 Feb- Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, accompanied by Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Myint  Thein and officials, arrived at Kyaukse Basic Education High School No 1 and 2 February
morning. At the  school, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun and wife Daw Myint Myint Ko presented two 21" TV sets  each to Kyaukse BEHS No 1 and No 2 and Singaing BEHS.

Then, the minister and wife and the deputy  minister presented prizes to outstanding students in the 1999-2000 matriculation examination. The minister  and party inspected Myogyi- Ywangan section of Hanmyintmo-
Myogyi-Ywangan-Aungban-Taunggyi Road. In  Ywangan, the minister and the deputy minister gave instructions on repair of Myogyi-Ywangan section to  officials.


(7) Minister inspects health care activities in Mon State

YANGON, 4 Feb-Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein accompanied by officials yesterday inspected hospitals  and health care activities in Mon State. First, the minister inspected operation theatre, maternity wards and  child care ward at Mon State General Hospital and attended to the needs.

The minister was conducted round the hospital by Acting Medical  Superintendent Specialist Dr Tin Oo and officials. Then, he inspected intensive care unit for cardiac  complaint. Giving instructions, the
minister said modern medical equipment has been installed at hospitals  in states and divisions under Special Four-Year Plan for National Education Promotion (Health) Programme.  The equipment needs to be used not only in giving medical treatment but also in teaching. New  generation house surgeons need training for enabling them to use the equipment skilfully.

Afterwards, he proceeded to Mon State Nursing and Midwifery Training School. Principal Daw Cho Cho Mar  and officials reported to the  minister on academic matters. The minister left necessary instructions.
Next, the minister proceeded to  Thaton Township Hospital where he inspected operation theatre, maternity ward, in-patient wards and  laboratory. He gave instructions on cleanliness of the hospital and
the need for employees to make efforts to  become trustworthy ones and attended to the needs.

Afterwards, the minister inspected Township Hospital  in Bilin. Then, he met with health employees and officials of social organizations. He attended to the needs  for health care tasks.


(8) Minister inspects hotel project

YANGON, 4 Feb- Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, accompanied by Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu and officials, inspected Emerald Rose Garden Hotel project on upper Pansodan
Street in Mingala Taungnyunt Township this morning.

The minister and party were welcomed there by the Managing Director of Emerald Rose Garden Hotel, Consultants Col Aung Koe (Retd) and U Soe Nyunt, Project Chief Engineer Mr Danilo Hernandez and
officials. Officials reported on tasks related to the project. Then, the minister and party inspected Shangri- La  Hotel project. The Shangri-La project includes condominium apartment, hotel and business centre.

Minister for Culture tours India

YANGON, 4 Feb- Minister for Culture U Win Sein and party together with liaison officer Mr Amarmudee of  Cultural Department of India and Project Manager Mr Surendra Sarvey of Maha Shatra Tourism Development  Centre went to Ajanta Caves on 29 January. The minister and party were welcomed by officials of Ajanta  Caves Management Centre of Archaeology Department of India.

In the afternoon, the minister and party  visited Hindu Temple built in AD 12 in Anwa Village. On 30 January, the  minister and party visited Alora Ancient Stone Cave. The minister and party Dollatabad Fort, the best
one in  Mogul Empire. It was built in AD 12 and moved to Delhi in AD 1327. The minister and party left Aurangabad for Mumbai and spent the night at Regent Hotel. On 31 January, the minister and party went
to  Boddha  Gaya. They spent the night at Bodh Gaya Ashoka Hotel. On 1 February, the minister and party paid  respects to Sayadaw Unnaninda and presented offertories to the Sayadaw. The minister visited seven  sacred religious sites. He also visited the stone inscription. The minister and party visited Buddha images  and Vishnu Shanhthi Temple at the top of Rajgaha ancient city and observed garden of physician Jiwaka and  renovation of his house. The minister and party visited at Nalanda University. The minister and party arrived  here on 2 February.


(9) Finishing touches put to Lawka Chntha Abhaya Labha Muni Image

YANGON, 4 Feb-Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image kept on Mindhamma Hill in Insein Township was  being thronged with members of the Sangha, nuns and laity from morning to evening today. Stone sculpture  Thiri Thudhamma Manijotadhara U Taw Taw and sons put finishing touches to the Image from 7 am to  evening. Engineers and workers of Construction Project Special Group-2 of Public Works of the Ministry of  Construction also carried out construction work of Gandhakuti Kyaungdawgyi in which the Image is kept,  southern and northern stairways and retaining walls of the Hill.

Similarly, Myanmar handicraft technicians U  Ohn Tin and U Hla Kyu and their parties continued carrying out decoration work for the stairways. Wut  associations took turns to recite religious verses from 7 am to 10 p.m. In memory of the late Lt-Gen Sein  Aung (Retd), U Ko Ko Htoo-Daw Sanda Aung and family donated K 500,000 for all-round construction of the  Hill to Director-General of Religious Affairs Department Dr Myo Myint, and Commander of Taninthayi Naval  Region Command Commodore Soe Myint and wife Daw Nyunt Nyunt K 50,000 to member of Pagoda Board  of Trustees U Shein Aung Bo.
Bookshops of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Ministry of Information  are selling books on knowledge. The donations by the public from 5 August 2000 to date have amounted to  K 138,264,972.

 Minister inspects paddy purchase depots, warehouses

YANGON, 4 Feb- Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, accompanied by officials of Myanma Agricultural  Produce Trading, arrived at Bago Division (East) MAPT Manager Office this morning. The
minister met  officials and gave necessary instructions. Then, the minister and party inspected the site for Cargo Check  Point in Moppalin. In the afternoon, the minister and party inspected Htanawkyun Paddy
Purchase Depot and  Cargo Check Point in Waw Township. The minister also inspected duty and functions of Kyaikhla Paddy  Purchase Depot, Myoma Warehouses, No 147 Rice Mill in Waw. At Phaya Thonzu Paddy Purchase Depot in  Bago, the minister gave instructions.

Commander inspects agricultural and livestock breeding work in Yangon North District

YANGON, 4 Feb - Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace  and Development Council Commander Maj- Gen Khin Maung Than inspected agricultural matters
and  regional  development tasks in Yangon North District this afternoon. At Taing Myan Kyaw Poultry Farm run by national  entrepreneurs in the special vegetable production and poultry farming zone-1 of Yangon Division, the  commander inspected the raising of 10,000 hens for eggs by battery cage system and vegetable patches by  the side of the farm. In Hmawby Hsan Hall, the commander said that arrangements have been made to  channel water from Ngamoeyeik Dam into the zone for the vegetable patches, and drains in the zone have  now been filled with water; the special  supervisory committee is providing all-round assistance for national entrepreneurs who are engaged in  agricultural and livestock
breeding work, so they need to carry out their work energetically; they also need to  do agricultural and livestock breeding work on the plots allotted to them; requirements, if any, will be fulfilled.

Then, members of the special zone supervisory committee reported on completion of agricultural work, the  condition of poultry farming, completion of building of the 36.16-mile-long earth road and the
surfacing of the  8-mile-long road with laterite, the digging of the 57.32-mile-long drain, installation of 15.8-mile-long 11-KV  power line and 35-mile-long 440 KV power line, the sinking of artisan wells and
the use of water pumps, and  entrepreneurs on agricultural and livestock breeding work.

The commander attended to their requirements. Then, the commander inspected vegetable patches, the building of roads and installation of power lines in  the zone. In the zone-1, vegetables have so far been grown on 1,664 acres of land and poultry farming has  been carried out by five units. Superintending Engineer of Yangon Division Public Works U Soe Nyunt  reported on the finding of the axis for the 45-mile-long road which will link villages on the western side of  Bago Yoma in Hlegu, Hmawby and Taikkyi Townships in Yangon North District. The commander attended to  machinery requirements.
