(1) Secretary-1 views Agriculture, Livestock Breeding and Industrial Development Trade Fair 2001

YANGON, 25 Feb-Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt viewed  Agriculture,  Livestock Breeding and Industrial Development Trade Fair 2001, sponsored by Shweayeya Co Ltd at  Tatmadaw  Convention Centre on U Wisara Road in Dagon Township this evening.

The Secretary-1 accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office arrived there at 5  p.m.  The Secretary-1 was welcomed there by Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council  Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen. Pyi Sone, Minister for Livestock and  Fisheries Brig-Gen. Maung Maung Thein, Deputy Chief of the Office of the Strategic Studies Deputy Director of  Defence Services Intelligence Maj-Gen Kyaw Win and officials.

The Secretary-1 viewed booths of agriculture, livestock breeding, industrial development, safety, communications  and general goods exhibited by 28 local and foreign companies at the fair. The Secretary-1 and party left the fair at  5.45 p.m.
 


(2) Secretary-1 inspects all-round construction tasks at Mindhamma Hill

YANGON, 25 Fe-Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by  member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development  Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and ministers, arrived at Mindhamma Hill  in Insein Township at 6.10 p.m.  today, where Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labia Muni Image is kept.

The Secretary- 1 and party were welcomed there by Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, Deputy Minister  for Home Affairs Brig-Gen. Thura Myint Maung, Deputy Minister for Science and Technology U Nyi Hla Nge.  responsible officials, technicians and members of  the Pagoda Board of Trustees. After paying obeisance to the Image, the Secretary-1 inspected all-round  construction work, heard reports presented by the officials, and gave instructions.

The Secretary-l also inspected construction of Gandhakuti Kyaungdawgyi, stairways and decoration works and left
there in the evening.


(3) Myanmar, Japanese palaeontologists unearth more fossilized remains in Pondaung region

YANGON, 25 Feb-A Japanese palaeontologist team consisting of Dr Masanaru Takai, Dr Naoko Egi and Dr Hisashi  Suzuki led by Professor Dr Nobuo Shigahar of Primate Research Institute of Tokyo University of Japan arrived  here on 1 February to cooperate in the expedition and exploration of fossilized remains in Pondaung
region in  2001.

The Japanese palaeontologists and Myanmar Pondaung expedition and exploration team formed with geologists of  the Office of the Strategic Studies of the Ministry of Defence and universities of the Ministry of  Education carried out expedition and exploration of fossilized remains in the vicinity of Bahin, Hsinzwe and  Thadut Villages in Myaing Township in Magway Division and Wetkya and Mokaung Villages  in Pale Township in Sagaing Division from 3 to 18 February 2001.

The Office of the Strategic Studies of the Ministry of Defence and geologists from universities of the Ministry of  Defence started exploration and study of fossils of Pondaungia primates in Pondaung  region in March 1997. They unearthed the fossilized remains of the primates, fossils of various kinds of vertebrate  animals and leaf fossils and found the evidence of existence of the anthropoid primate. the origin of human beings,  in Pondaung region. Starting from 1998, Myanmar scholars carried out exploration of fossilized remains in  cooperation with Japanese  scholars. They also carried out exploration and research work this year. Their  cooperation resulted in the success of research on fossils and the finding of interesting fossils.

During their exploration, they discovered one lower molar of the primate near Bahin Village, a fragment of skull of  the primate and pieces of arm bone and leg-bone assumed to be primates near Hsinzwe Village. The fragment of  skull found this year is similar to that of skull of Amphipithecus primate found by Myanmar-Japan team in  Paukkhaung region in 1999. It was an interesting find among scholars to continue their research.

The combined team also unearthed fossilized jaws and teeth of Antharacotheriidae, fossilized thigh-bone, right  lower jaw and teeth of Broptotheriidae and Rhinocerotidae, fossilized jaws and teeth of Tragulid, fossilized teeth  and bones of Carnivore, fossilized bones and teeth of fish, fossilized bones and teeth of crocodile and fossilized  bones of turtle. The team simultaneously carried out the work of measuring stratigraphic section of the Pondaung
formation near Bahin, Paukkhaung, Hsinzwe and Nyaungpinle Villages in Pondaung region and the study of  stratigraphic section between Pondaung and Yaw.

The Japanese palaeontologist team, together with Myanmar scholars, carried out research work on fossils  unearthed this year and other fossils including primates found previous years at the National Museum from 19 to  23 February. They left here on 23 February.


(4) Myanmar delegation leaves for PRC

YANGON, 25 Feb- A Myanmar delegation led by Deputy Minister at State Peace and Development Council  Chairman's Office U Set Maung left here by air this afternoon to attend the Bo'ao Forum for Asia to be held in  Hainan Province. of the People's Republic of China on 26 and 27 February. The delegation was seen off at Yangon  International Airport by departmental officials, Charge d' Affaires ai of the Chinese Embassy Mr Tang Ying and  families of the delegation members.  Members of the delegation were Director U Win Kyi of Myanma Radio and  Television of the Ministry of Information and Deputy Director U Kyaw Tin of International Organizations and  Economic Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Deputy Minister leaves for Malaysia to attend International  Conference on Globalization

YANGON, 2S Feb -Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win left here by air this morning to attend  the International Conference on Globalization to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 26 and 27 February. The  deputy minister and party were seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win  Aung, departmental heads, Ambassador of Malaysia. Dato' Muhammad bin Noh and officials.


(5) Cash assistance provided to 12 families of Tatmadawmen

YANGON, 25 Feb-Officials of the Office of Strategic Studies of the Ministry of Defence this morning presented cash  assistance donated by well-wishers to families of Tatmadawmen who died in the line of duty near Hpa-an. On  behalf of the Chief of Office of Strategic Studies, Deputy Chief of the Office of Strategic Studies and Deputy  Director of Defence Services Intelligence Maj-Gen Kyaw Win and senior military officers of OSS went to 12
residences of the deceased Tatmadawmen and presented K 1 million each to 12 families.


(6) Traditional medicine practitioners express their desire to take guidance of Senior General Than Shwe and  guidelines of Secretry-1 as working norms

Yangon 25 Feb-The traditional medicine practitioners of Yangon East District expressed their desire to take as working  norms the guidance contained in the message sent by Chairman of the State Peace and  Development Council Senior General Than Shwe to Myanmar Traditional Medicine Practitioners Conference held  on 19 December Year 2000 and the guidelines given by Chairman of Myanmar National Health Committee  Secretary-l  of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt at the Conference was held in the hall  of Thingangyun Township Peace and Development Council this morning.

Traditional medicine practitioner of Tamway Township U Hla Thein Kyaw presided over the ceremony with  traditional medicine practitioners U Tun Wai of Thingangyun Township, U Myint Thaung of Botahtaung  Township, U Naing Thaung of Dagon Myothit (North) Township, U Soe Win of Thaketa Township, U Win Tin of  Dagon Myothit (South) Township, U Kyi of North Okkalapa Township, U Maung Shwe of Mingala Taungnyunt  Township and U Thaung Naing of South Okkalapa Township as members of the panel of chairmen.

Traditional medicine practitioner U Aung Kyaw Soe of South Okkalapa Township acted as master of ceremonies  Hla Thein Kyaw made an opening speech. Traditional medicine practitioner U Chit Swe of Thaketa Township  tabled a motion calling on all the traditional medicine practitioners to take as working nuns the guidance contained  in the message sent by Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe to
Myanmar Traditional Medicine Practitioners Conference held at Kyaikkasan Grounds on 19 December Year 2000.  Traditional medicine practitioner U Khin Soe of South Okkalapa Township seconded the motion. Chairman of U  Hla Thein Kyaw made a closing speech, which brought the ceremony to an end.


(7) Joint-Secretary Sayadaws attend ceremony to form Paradesi Sangha Nayaka Committee, Htidaw hoisting  ceremony in India

YANGON, 25 Feb-Led by Joint-Secretary of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Agga Maha Pandita Agga  Maha Saddhammajatikadhaja Bhaddanta Candima, Joint-Secretary Sayadaws Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta  Osadhabhivamsa and Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Kunnalajoti, member Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Kitti  and the director-general of Department for Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana left here for India by air on  16 February evening to carry out work for forming India Paradesi Sangha Nayaka Committee and to attend Htidaw
Hoisting ceremony for Kuthinayon Maha Sukhamdada Chanthagyi Pagoda .

The Buddhist mission arrived at Calcutta and stayed at Asoka Hotel on that day. On 17 February morning, they  proceeded to Patna by air and were welcomed there by Myanmar Ambassador U Tin Latt and party. They then  headed for Kuthinayon by car and were welcomed by lay disciples of the Sayadaw of Kuthinayon Myanmar  monastery. They arrived at Lumbini in Nepal on 18 February morning and inspected the dhammayon being built.  Sayadaw of Lumbini Myanmar monastery U Nandamalabhivamsa, the officials of DPPS and engineers in-charge  reported on buildings. The Sayadaws visited the birth place of Lord Buddha..

The Sayadaws attended the ceremony to form India Paradesi Sangha Nayaka Committee held at Kuthinayon  Myanmar monastery on 19 February. In the new committee, Sayadaw Bhaddanta Naninda (Bodh Gaya Myanmar  Monastery) was elected as Chairman, Sayadaw Bhaddanta Nanissara (Kuthinayon Myanmar Monastery) as Vice- Chairman, Sayadaw Bhaddanta Wannadhaja (Migadawon Myanmar Monastery) as Secretary, Sayadaw Bhaddanta  Dhammacara (Patna Myanmar Monastery) as Joint-Secretary and seven Sayadaws as members. Sayadaw
Bhaddanta Naninda was also elected as  representative of Sangha Thamutiya Sangha and member of Central Working Committee of the Sangha (India).

On 20 February morning, the Htidaw Hoisting ceremony for Maha Sukhamdada Chanthagyi Pagoda, the replica of  the Shwedagon Pagoda in Myanmar, 108 feet high, was held in front of Kuthinayon Myanmar Monastery in Uttar  Pradesh. The Sayadaws of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee consecrated the pagoda and performed  rituals of golden and silver showers. On 21 February, at Migadawon, they visited the place where Lord Buddha  delivered the first sermon Dhammacakka, Bo Tree and Maha Bodhi Pagoda where Lord Buddha attained  enlightenment. The Sayadaws left Calcutta by air and arrived at Yangon International Airport at 6 p.m.

Ceremony to bless ground chosen for construction of ordination hall held in Thingangyun Township

YANGON, 25 Feb -A ceremony to bless the ground chosen for construction of Iddhiaung Sasana Htitikari

Visongama ordination hall and donate cash for construction of three-storey building was held in the compound of  Mulasetaungpyi Kyaung in Thingangyun Township this morning.

Present were member Sayadaws of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee led by Joint Secretary of the State  Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Agga Maha Pandita Agga Maha Saddhammajotikadhaja Bhad,danta Candima  and members of the Sangha, donor of ordination hall Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin and wife Daw  Yin Yin Nyunt, donor of archway and wall Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen. Win Tin  and wife Daw Ni Ni Tin, Director-General of Department for Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana U Sann  Lwin, Director-General of Religious Affairs Dr Myo Myint, Pro-Rector (Admin) of International Theravada  Buddhist Missionary University Dr Hla Pe, wellwishers and guests.

Members of the Sangha led by member Sayadaws of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee blessed the  ground.ayadaws reordained Presiding Nayaka Sayadaw of Mulasetaungpyi Kyaung U Eiddhibala under the  sponsorship of Minister U Aung Khin and wife Daw Yin Yin Myint.

A ceremony to share merits and donate cash for construction of three-storey building was held. Congregation  received the Five Precepts from Sayadaw Bhaddanta Candima and members of the Sangha recited the Parittas.

The ministers and their wives presented offertories to the Sayadaws. Altogether 45 wellwishers presented K  22,820,000 . Ministers U Aung Khin and Brig-Gen. Win Tin accepted the donations. Joint Secretary of the State  Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Agga Maha Pandita Osadabhivamsa delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of  merits.' Soon' was then offered to the members of the Sangha.


(8) Minister inspects Wakema, Shwelaung bridges

YANGON, 25 Feb- Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen. Myint Thein and  officials, inspected Darka-Einme-Pantanaw-Shwelaung road section yesterday morning. In Wakema, Wakema  Bridge Project Superintending Engineer U Khin Maung Hse reported to the minister on construction of the pile at  the approach road on Yangon bank, completion of piers of approach road and installation of beams and future  tasks. The minister gave necessary instructions and inspected the construction site.

Wakema Bridge is of the steel frame suspension bridge. The main bridge will be 600 feet long. Approach roads on  Yangon and Wakema banks will be 1,200 feet each long. The bridge will have a 24-ft wide two-lane motorway and  four feet wide pedestrian lane. Its clearance will be 46 feet high and 580 feet wide and the bridge can withstand 60- ton loads. In the briefing hall of Shwelaung Bridge construction site, Senior Engineer U Khin Maung Lay reported
on schedules for construction of approach roads on Yangon and Wakema banks and progress of work.

The minister then met the Superintending Engineer, senior engineers, engineers and employees of the project.  Afterwards, the minister inspected progress of work of the bridge construction and left there. Foundation and piers  of Shwelaung Bridge were built of reinforced concrete. Approach roads will be paved with concrete. The main
bridge, 500 feet long, will be a steel suspension one. Approach roads will be 600 feet each long. The bridge will  have a 24-ft wide motor- way and three feet wide pedestrian lane. Its clearance will be 36 feet high and 400 feet  wide and the bridge can withstand 36-ton loads.

Nepalese delegation tours townships in Yangon Division

YANGON, 25 Feb-A 20  member Nepalese delegation led by Deputy Speaker (Lower House of The Parliament of  The  Kingdom of Nepal) Ms Chitra Lekha Yadav met Director General Dr Wan Maung and officials of Health  Department of Ministry of Health on 22 February. They discussed matters related to national sanitation activities.  The delegation was currently here to study Fourth National Sanitation Week being implemented in Myanmar.

The delegation visited Environment Section of Health Department in Aung San on 23 February. Officials  conducted them round there.

The delegation also studied national sanitation activities at Samalauk and Sakaw villages in Nyaungdon Township  in Ayeyawady Division the same day. The delegation attended opening ceremony of Fourth National Sanitation  Week held at the Institute of Nursing yesterday morning. The delegation paid a study visit to Hlinethaya and  Htantabin townships in Yangon Division the same day. Officials responded the queries raised by the delegates.


(9) Commander fulfils requirements of Sayadaws in Mandalay

YANGON, 25 Feb-Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central  Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, accompanied by Mandalay Mayor Brig-Gen. Yan Thein, Deputy Commander Brig- Gen. Nay Win and departmental officials, paid homage to Vice-Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka
Committee Agga Maha Pandita Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sirindabhivamsa at Dhammikara Kyaung of Masoeyein
Kyaungthit in Maha Aungmye Township, Winaya New Padetha Kyaung Sayadaw Bhaddanta Panasamibhivamsa of old Masoeyein Kyaungtaik and State vadaariya Agga Maha Pandita Sayadaw Bhaddanta Nanavarabhivamsa at Sasanapala Kyaung of Nyaunggan Kyaungtaik in Chanmyathazi Township on 23 February morning and fulfilled the requirements of the Sayadaws. The commander then attended the ceremony to assign duty to new members of
Mandalay Division All Bus Lines Control Committee (Local/Highway) at the Committee Office on 63rd Street
between 33rd and 35th Streets in Chanayethazan Township. Then, the commander and  officials presented prizes to respective divisions for their outstanding performance in discharging duties in  competition.

Commander attends coord meeting of Bago Division Police Force

YANGON, 25 Feb-The third four-monthly coordination meeting of Bago Division Police Force was held at the meeting hall of Kaytumadi Yeyeiktha in Taungoo Township yesterday morning, with an opening address by Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern Command Maj-Gen Tin Aye. Also present on the occasion were Secretary Lt-Col Aung Min and members of Division Peace and Development Council, the Division Judge and law officers, Chairman of Bago District Peace and Development Council, Police commander of district and township police stations. The Commander delivered an opening speech at the meeting. The Deputy Police Commander of the Division and police officers reported on work done and
future plans, and the meeting came to a close in the afternoon.
