Vice-Senior General Maung Aye attends ceremony to complete No 1 diversion tunnel
Yangon, 1 Jan - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) Vice-Senior General Maung Aye visited Maha Arnt Htoo Kantha Pagoda this morning.
Vice-Senior General Maung Aye donated cash to the funds of the pagoda through the members of Pagoda Board of Trustees, who presented him the picture of the pagoda. Next, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye and party paid homage to the pagoda.
In the afternoon, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye and party went by helicopter to Yeywa Hydel Power Project near Ye Yamann Village, 31-mile South-East of Mandalay. At the briefing hall, Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut reported on tasks being carried out, completion of No 1 diversion tunnel and preparations for opening of the diversion tunnel, use of natural pozzolan, the regions where natural pozzolann was discovered and production with the aids of charts. Deputy Minister for Electric Power U Myo Myint reported on implementation of Yeywa hydro electric power project.
Vice-Senior General Maung Aye said efforts are to be made for completion of the Yeywa hydro electric power project that will fulfil the electric power needs of the state as scheduled in accord with the set standard. Dams and bridges can skillfully be built in the country based on own technology and investment.
He said in the country there are still abundant water resources that can generate hydro electric power. He spoke of the need to make efforts to be able to implement hydro electric power projects based on own technology.
Vice-Senior General Maung Aye presented a basket of fruit to Consultant Engineer Mr Fischer and cash awards for service personnel to Project Director U Win Kyi. Vice-Senior General Maung Aye inspected charts on Yeywa hydro electric power project and sample of natural pozzolan found near Kyauktaga and Ngayantgon Villages in the north of Popa.
Vice-Senior General Maung Aye and party inspected construction of ring bund and separation wall. Minister Maj-Gen Tin Htut and officials reported on construction. Vice-Senior General Maung Aye and party also inspected the project site being undertaken with the use of heavy machinery and the site for roller compacted concrete dam.

Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint and Minister Maj-Gen Tin Htut formally opened the ceremony to mark the completion of the diversion tunnel.
Vice-Senior General Maung Aye and party passed through the 1,443 feet No 1 diversion tunnel. Vice-Senior General Maung Aye then cordially greeted those present.
The 780-megawatt turbine of Yeywa hydro electric power project being implemented on Myitnge River will generate 3,550 million kilo watt hours. The project is being undertaken by construction-2 of Hydro Electric Power Department. Under the project, No 1 and 2 diversion tunnels will be built. No 1 diversion tunnel has now been completed for the first phase.
Vice-Senior General Maung Aye and party left the project site for Mandalay International Airport and they arrived back here in the evening.
Secretary-General of USDA U Than Aung and member of the Secretariat U Thaung met secretaries of PyinOoLwin District and Township USDAs, executives and ward organizers at the District USDA Office on 31 December. Secretaries of PyinOoLwin District and Township USDAs reported on activities in the region. Secretary-General of USDA U Than Aung and member of the Secretariat U Thaung explained tasks laid down by Patron of the Association Senior General Than Shwe at the annual general meeting of USDA, future tasks passed by the meeting and specific programmes for rural development tasks. Then they fulfilled the requirements of district and township associations.

Ambassador U Khin Maung Aye accradited to Portugal concurrently
Yangon, 2 Jan - The Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar has appointed U Khin Maung Aye, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Union of Myanmar to the Republic of Italy, concurrently as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Union of Myanmar to the Republic of Portugal.

Agriculture and irrigation tasks inspected in Bago Division
Yangon, 1 Jan - Minster for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin inspected the construction of Min Hla and Gamon dams in Okpo Township of western Bago Division yesterday.
There the minister heard reports on progress of work, then gave instructions on timely completion of the project and attended to the requirements. Next, the minister also inspected the construction of the regulation dam, the main dam, and the diversion weir.
On arrival at the worksite of Gamon dam project in Okpo Township, the minister heard reports presented by officials on progress of work and future tasks, and then gave instructions. Gamon dam is 4,400 feet in length and 116 feet in height, with 12,000 affected acres. Arrangements are under way to accomplish the project in time.
The minister then looked into the construction of the main dam, the retaining tower and the diversion weir and the digging of the canal.
In the afternoon, the minister and party met with division/district/township departmental officials at the agricultural education camp in Min Hla Township and gave instructions on cultivation of summer paddy exceeding the target set, winter mixed crops and cotton, and sugarcane. Officials then reported on arrangements to be carried out in cooperation with the local authorities in the agriculture sector. After hearing reports, the minister gave instructions on earnest cooperation.
USDA CEC member tours Mon State
Yangon, 1 Jan - Central Executive Committee Member of the Union Solidarity and Development Association Brig-Gen Ohn Myint met with the secretaries and executives of district and township USDAs in Mon State at the office of the association in Kyaikhto on 27 December and discussed matters related to implementation of the tasks, future tasks, organizational matters and rural development tasks in accord with the guidance given by the Patron of the association at the USDA annual general meeting. Then, he also met with local people and USDA members in Kyaikpi village. On 28 December, CEC member arrived at Kawkadoke Village in Bilin Township and accepted membership applications at Shwebontha Pagoda Dhammanyon.
Then, the CEC member met with executives and members of Bilin Township USDA in Bilin and those of Thaton and Paung townships USDA in Thaton. The CEC member also saw over construction of a station hospital in Kato Village in Mawlamyine and the agriculture and livestock breeding farm of Mon State USDA Phetaw Village on 29 December.
He also accepted the USDA membership applications from Hnitkaing, Padanngangyi and Myamala villages on 30 December. CEC member Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint inspected hatching of prawns at PaNga salt field and attended to the needs. On 31 December, the minister met with Mudon Township USDA members and opened the library of No 1 Basic Education High School. He,together with the commander, attended the extempore talks competition conducted by Mon State USDA to mark 58th Armed Forces Day for 2003 and presented prizes. Then, the CEC member and the commander went to the children hospital construction site in Mawlamyine.
Agreement for Myanma industrial port signed
Yangon, 1 Jan - A ceremony to sign a BOT agreement and a land lease between Myanma Ceramic Industries and Myanma Anawah Swanahshin Group (S) Co Ltd for Myanma Industrial Port was held at the industrial port in Ahlon here this morning. Present on the occasion were Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung.
Managing Director U Soe Yi of MCI and Managing Director U Ko Ko Htoo of MAS Co Ltd signed the agreement and exchanged documents. The company extended the port to 1,000-foot in length together with the five-foot extension of the width. Two approach bridges, 360-foot in length and 30-foot in width, and further 13-acre extension of the container yard were also carried out by the company. The port will be able to provide moorings for two 12,000-ton vessels at the same time, cargo services, container services and warehouses.
Yangon, 1 Jan - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung arrived at Myanmar M C wood finishing plant in the compound of Ywama Steel Mill in Insein Township this morning.
After leaving necessary instructions there, the minister and party proceeded to the shoe factory (branch) of Myanma General and Maintenance Industries in Hpawkan in Insein Township. There he heard reports by Managing Director U Thaik Tun of MGMI and General Manager U Nyunt Aung on matters relating to extension of the factory, roofing and flooring. The minister then inspected the factory and gave instructions.
At the briefing hall, the General Manager briefed on arrangements for extension of the factory with the use of maps. Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thein Tun presented a supplementary report. Afterwards, the minister and party visited Danyingon Brick Factory No 1 of Myanma Ceramics Industries in the township.
He gave necessary instructions to the officials and inspected the production line. He then arrived at Winthuza Shop in Mayangon Township and inspected sales of the goods produced by the ministry. He also inspected measures for display of the booth of the ministry at Tatmadaw Convention Hall on U Wizara Road and gave instructions.
Full dress rehearsal for Independence Day Flag Hoisting Ceremony
Yangon, 1 Jan - Full dress rehearsal for Yangon City Flag Hoisting Ceremony of 55th Anniversary Independence Day 2003 was held in conjunction with State Flag Saluting Ceremony at People's Park on Pyay Road here this morning.
The Flag Hoisting Ceremony of Yangon City for the 55th Anniversary Independence Day took place at 4.20 am, and the State Flag Saluting Ceremony at 7 am today. Present on the occasion were Chairman of the Subcommittee for the Observance of 55th Anniversary Independence Day Flag Hoisting Ceremony and State Flag Saluting Ceremony Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Myint Swe.
Minister inspects railroad and bridge
Yangon, 1 Jan - Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung inspected the works being carried out for the durability of Thanlyin bridge and measures for prevention of railway accidents yesterday and gave necessary instructions. The minister also inspected the arrangements for speedy and low-cost transportation of containers from Thilawa terminal to Yangon, construction of railroads at the container yard of the terminal, maintenance of railroads and construction of new Thilawa railway station there.
Yangon University of Culture inspected
Yangon, 1 Jan - Minister for Culture Maj-Gen Kyi Aung visited the University of Culture (Yangon) and inspected renovation of buildings, greening tasks and growing of vegetables, chosen site for staff housing and ring-road there this morning.
Afterwards, he inspected completion of Maha Bandoola statue to be placed near Malun Village in Minhla Township, Magway Division. After leaving necessary instructions there, he inspected power control room of the university and gave instructions on systematic use of electricity.
Yangon, 1 Jan - Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing inspected General Administration Departments in Hmawby, Hlegu, Mingaladon and Dagon Myothit (South) townships yesterday and urged the officials concerned to make concerted efforts to success the objectives of the departments and ministry. He also inspected farming in the departments for staff welfare and urged the officials to extend the staff welfare tasks and attended to the needs.
Yangon, 1 Dec - Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Brig-Gen Than Tun, attended the opening ceremony of Parami-A rural road in Parami Ward, Sagaing yesterday.
Executive Officer of Sagaing Division DAC U Tin Hlaing and Township Peace and Development Council Chairman U Tin Ohn formally opened the ceremony. The deputy minister and party also attended the opening of artesian wells in Pekadoe Village in Sagaing Township and HlayU Kan Village in Myingmu Township.
Similarly, a ceremony to open the rural road linking Dhapaing and Hmansi villages constructed by Sittway Township Development Affairs Committee was held at Dhapaing Village on 27 December, attended by Sittway District Peace and Development Council Chairman Lt-Col Myo Tint and members, the Sittway Township Peace and Development Council chairman and members and local people.
Chairman Lt-Col Myo Tint and Superintending Engineer U Aung Maung formally opened the road.
Course on inspection of drugs and general commodities
Yangon, 1 Jan - The Revenue Department of the Ministry of Finance and Revenue held a ceremony to open the course No 1 on the inspection of narcotic drugs and general commodities with the use of electronic technology at the training hall of the department this afternoon, with an address by the Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein. The six-week course is being attended by 14 trainees.
Officials seek means to upgrade Aungmingala Coach Station
Yangon, 1 Jan - Officials sought means to upgrade Aungmingala Coach Station in Mingaladon, Yangon Division, at a meeting today. Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Myint Swe gave a speech at the meeting which was held at Yangon Command.
In his capacity as the chairman of Yangon Division Supervisory Committee to Ensure Smooth and Secure Transport, the commander explained the opening of the station to ease traffic congestion in Yangon and for the convenience of passengers. Systematic running of the station is required as the city development drive is in progress to make Yangon a metropolis of the international level, he said. Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa reported to the meeting on the station extension plan; Director-General of Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development U Arnt Kyaw on arrangements to ensure convenience of the passengers leaving and arriving at the coach station; No 1 Military Region Commander Col Tun Kyi on departure and arrival plans for the coaches; YCDC Joint Secretary U Kyi Win on efforts to ease traffic congestion in the city as its population is growing; and YCDC member Col Thaung Wai on erection of bus stops and taxi stands.
Other participants also discussed section-wise plans. The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the commander.
11th Horticultural Show and Competition for Mayor's Cup held
Yangon, 1 Jan - A ceremony to open the 11th Horticultural Show and Competition for Mayor's Cup held in commemoration of the 55th Anniversary Independence Day 2003 took place in Mindhamma exhibition and competition grounds at the corner of Mindhamma Road and Tawwin Street in Mayangon Township this morning.
The opening ceremony was attended by Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone. Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe presented prizes to winners at local orchid competition, Daw Khin Than Nwe to winners at the flower arrangement competition, Daw Marlar Tint to winners at the vegetable competition, Daw Aye Aye to winners at fruit-bearing plants competition, Daw Khin Lay Thet to winners at the foreign orchid competition, Daw Khin Thet Htay to cactus competition, Daw Kyu Kyu Win to winners at the local orchid competition, Daw Khin Hla Hla to winners at the foreign orchid (venda) competition, and Daw Khin Khin to winners at foreign orchid competition. The horticultural competition and prize-presentation ceremony will also be held on 8 January, and there are a total of 460 shops at the exhibition, which will be kept open from 1 to 31 January. Admission is free.

School Family Day Exhibition continues
Yangon, 1 Jan - The School Family Day (2002-2003) exhibition being opened at the Diamond Jubilee Hall on Pyay Road continued for the sixth day today.
The computer skill demonstration of universities, companies and basic education schools was given at Creating Knowledge Through ICT booth, being opened for the last day at the third floor of the exhibition and was crowded with students and visitors.
Paintings on Myanmar sway of life and postcard painting demonstration booth at the second floor of the exhibition and handicraft and domestic science booth and the booth of Myanma Traditional Arts and Crafts Association on the first floor and book stalls on the ground floor are also crowded with visitors. The exhibition will be opened till 3 January from 9 am to 5 pm daily. Horticultural show display and food stalls were opened in the compound of the exhibition.
Educational paper reading sessions of the School Family Day were held at the recreation centre, Science Hall and Convocation Council Hall in Yangon University at 9 am today.

Yangon, 1 Jan - The third Great Wall National Championship of Badminton Tournament, under the arrangement of Myanmar Badminton Federation and sponsored by Great Wall medical production company, continued today at Yangon (West) District Gymnasium. A total of 66 events of men's and women's single and double matches took place today.
Drug
9,780 stimulant tablets seized
Yangon, 1 Jan - A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force seized 9,700 stimulant tablets on 17 December from Laukyon, son of U Lauksan, Manaing Road, Region 19, Ward-5, Lashio, and Laukpyin, son of U Shone Law while intercepting their motor cycle with number plates LaRa/1283. Police station concerned filed them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.
