Yangon, 4 Jan - The ceremony to present prizes to winners in the 55th Anniversary Independence Day Commemorative Essay, Poem, TV Quiz and Computer Art Competitions was held at the Pyithu Hluttaw Building on Pyay Road this evening, attended by Chairman of Central Committee for Organizing the 55th Anniversary Independence Day Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt.

Director-General U Saw Lwin of Higher Education Department (Lower Myanmar) acted as master of ceremonies.

First, the Secretary-1 delivered an address. He said that the students who won prizes in essay, poetry, TV quiz and computer arts competitions created their work and displayed their skills in depicting history on struggle for the independence, value and essence of the independence, definition of the independence and requirement for safeguarding the independence with full reference and historic facts, adding that it was gratifying to honour those who are worthy of honour.

The four national objectives of the 55th Anniversary Independence Day all the national people to collectively safeguard the national independence and ensure perpetuation of sovereignty; all the national people to collectively strive for the building of a new modern and developed nation; all the national people to be united to ensure non-disintegration of the Union, non-disintegration of national solidarity; and all the national people to strive for the emergence of an enduring State Constitution have been laid down. In reminiscence of the history of Myanmar, anthropoid primate dated back to 40 million years has been found in Myanmar soil. According to the history, the civilization has flourished in Myanmar since time immemorial with the city state of Pyu people. The first Myanmar Kingdom of Bagan era, the second Myanmar Kingdom of Taungoo era and the third Myanmar Kingdom of Konbaung era had been established and Myanmar has been in existence among nations of the world as a united and independent country.

After waging three aggressive wars on Myanmar, the colonialists seized the country which lost its independence in 1885. Under the servitude of the colonialist, the entire national people who did not want to be under the yoke of the colonialists were awakened by the need to regain the independence. Due to strong desire and unity of the people, Myanmar regained its independence on 4 January 1948. The already gained independence and sovereignty will have to be safeguarded as long as the world exists and it is a national duty bestowed by the history on the entire national people to make all-out efforts to ensure the emergence of a peaceful modern and developed nation.

At the Annual General Meeting of the Union Solidarity and Development Association held on 18 November 2002, USDA Patron Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe noted that the Government at present has been making relentless and sustained efforts for the emergence of a new modern and developed nation. In doing so, steps are being taken for strengthening forces in agricultural, industrial, transport and communication sectors covering the entire nation after combining the natural force, the human force and all the internal forces. The service personnel and the people who had made concerted and collective efforts for mobilizing those forces whatever sectors they are in are to be honoured.

In line with the guidance of the Head of State, the youths were to make strenuous efforts with their own strength for emergence of a modern and developed nation. At a time when a new century has arrived, knowledge and technology have been keeping pace with changes. The present era is Knowledge Age and efforts need to be made to keep pace with changes of knowledge and technology. National education promotion programme is being implemented by the entire national people. In implementing the School Enrollment Programme which is the pre-requisite of human resources development for four years in a row, the public participation and care have been realized. There was an increase in the number of primary school enrollment and the total number of enrollment in the whole country in 2002 was 93.07 per cent.

The enrollment in 55 townships where priority has been given was 98.36 per cent owing to the participation of the entire national people. Efforts are being made for completion of primary, middle and high school education phase by phase in implementation of the national education promotion programmes. Over 2,400 post- primary schools were opened this year in order to receive middle school education in basic education sector for the children in rural areas. Altogether 9,999 basic education schools have been opened in the whole country. There are three basic education schools in every five wards or villages. It shows that there are many learning opportunities. In higher education sector, more universities and colleges were opened. The government spent much money including foreign exchange on promoting national education. Well-wishers also participated in the education promotion tasks. They have donated over K 7,000 million for establishment of education fund, construction of basic education schools, provision of modern teaching aids and school enrollment activities of school-going age children.

In connection with art skill, the Secretary-1 said Myanma Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions have been held yearly since 1993 with the aim of propagation of Myanma fine arts. Primary school children and university students actively participated in the competitions and won prizes. He said he was very pleased to see their amazing artistic skill and power of younger generation youths for preservation of Myanma culture. He said new generation youths have to learn changing and developing knowledge and technology and preserve national cultural heritage that existed in the country for years, customs, morale and make efforts to propagate national spirit.

He spoke of the need for them to take care of the fact. It is the twelfth time to hold Independence Day commemorative essay and poem competitions of university and college level, basic education high level and basic education school middle level with the aim of realizing definition and essence of independence. TV quiz was 11 times and the computer drawing competition seven times.

Altogether 336,758 students 2,363 in university and college level, 120,678 in basic education high level and 213,528 in basic education middle level actively took part in the competitions.

The number of entrants as well as their qualities improved yearly, he added. In conclusion, he urged the winners, the entrants and the entire youths to implement the tasks for emergence of a peaceful modern developed nation in accord with Our Three Main National Causes and Twelve Objectives, make efforts for realization of national education promotion programme, to safeguard patriotism, national solidarity spirit and the Union Spirit as heritage of ancestors and to strive for keeping the spirit of safeguarding independence and sovereignty alive and dynamic in accord with the Independence Day objectives. Next, Chairman of the Sub-committee for Organizing the Competitions Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung reported on the increase in the number of competitors more than previous year and improvement of qualification in the competition.

Religion

There is freedom of worship, no discrimination on religious grounds in Myanmar Secretary-1 addresses the ceremony to mark 125 years of Vasse Sallal Goenka Family in Myanmar

Yangon, 4 Jan - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt delivered an address at the ceremony to mark the 125 years of the Vasse Sallal Goenka Family in Myanmar at Dhammajoti Vipassana Yeiktha of International Dhammagiri Vipassana Organization on Ngadatgyi Pagoda Road in Bahan Township this afternoon.

First, Maha Saddhamma-jotikadhaja SN Goenka recited Namo Tassa three times. He then gave a lecture on the milestones in his life and recounted his Buddhist missionary experience.

Next, the Secretary-1 spoke on the occasion. He said: It is indeed a great honour and privilege for me to address this auspicious occasion marking the 125 years of Sayagyi SN Goenka's family in Myanmar. May I first of all pay my humble respects to Sayagyi Goenka and to extend a most cordial welcome to all the Sayagyi's followers who are present here today. Today's assembly is all the more significant since it coincides with the 55th Anniversary Celebration of Myanmar's independence.

Myanmar is indeed blessed to have Sayagyi SN Goenka as a worthy son of the country. Although Vipassana was first introduced to Sayagyi in Myanmar in 1955, today the various Vipassana centres opened by Sayagyi are spreading the word of Dhamma all over the world. Under your guidance, people from all walks of life in countries near and far are practising Vipassana meditation with the objective of achieving purification of mind. Sayagyi's inspirational speech at the United Nations Millennium World Peace Summit in August 2000 stressing the need for peace and harmony in the world, for understanding among various faiths in the world as well as peace within individuals was met by resounding welcomed from the delegates.

In appreciation of his contribution to the spread of Dhamma, Sayagyi SN Goenka has been conferred with titles and awards by various countries and organizations. We in Myanmar are privileged to award Sayagyi SN Goenka with the title Maha Saddhammajotikadhaja. It is indeed a great pleasure to welcome so many of your followers and disciples to our country. You have rightly named our country as the Land of Dhamma as it is evident to all that the teachings of Buddhism prevail over the entire society. Myanmar is a nation where people try to live in accordance with the Four Modes of Sublime-living (Brahma Vihara); that is to follow the path of Metta (loving kindness); Karuna (Compassion); Mudita ( Sympathetic Joy) and Uppekha (Equanimity).

Consequently, Myanmar is respected throughout the world as a foremost nation in the preservation and promotion of Theravada Buddhism. Today, under the guidance of Samghas, with the support and assistance of the Government and the deep-rooted devotion of the people, Buddhism is flourishing throughout the country. During the time of our Government, two State Pariyatti Sasana Universities, one in Yangon and the other in Mandalay, were opened to increase the number of Samghas who are fully endowed with the qualifications to carry out missionary work at home and abroad.

Moreover, the International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University was established in 1998. Today, it is serving as a permanent centre for higher learning of Theravada Buddhism for monks, nuns and lay persons not only from Myanmar but also from all over the globe. Buddhism is the main religion of Myanmar and nearly 90 per cent of the population are Buddhists. As in the case of Buddhism, the Government also provides due support and assistance to other religions in the country like Christianity, Islam and Hinduism.

There is freedom of worship and no discrimination on religious grounds. Indeed, Myanmar is one of the very few countries in the world that observe national holidays not only on Buddhist holy days but also for Christian, Islam and Hindu faiths as well. It is therefore only natural that the former UN High Commissioner for Refugees Madame Sadako Ogata referred to Myanmar as a model society for religious tolerance.

Allow me once again to reiterate how happy I am to be able to pay respects to Sayagyi SN Goenka and to meet with so many of his followers from different nations. In conclusion, may I take this opportunities to express my sincere best wishes:- For the continued propagation of Buddha Sasana For the continued health and well-being of Sayagyi SN Goenka: and For all of you to be blessed with auspiciousness.

Afterwards, the Secretary-1 had the documentary photo taken together with Sayagyi Goenka and family. In the morning, Sayagyi Goenka and family, members of the board of trustees of Dhammajoti Vipassana Yeiktha and disciples offered provisions and "soon" to Secretary of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kumarabhivamsa and 125 members of the Sangha.
