Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing leave for PRC on State Visit 

Yangon, 6 Jan - At the invitation of President of the People's Republic of China Mr Jiang Zemin, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar and Prime Minister Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing left here by special flight at 8 am today to pay a State Visit to Beijing, the People's Republic of China.

Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party were seen off at Yangon International Airport by Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) Vice-Senior General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San.

NPED Minister receives Italian Ambassador

Yangon, 6 Jan - Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha received Ambassador of the Republic of Italy to the Union of Myanmar Dr Rafaelle Miniero at his office at 1 pm today.     


Mexican Minister calls on Health Minister, visits Shwedagon pagoda

Yangon,  6 Jan — Mexican Minister of Health Dr Julio Jose Frenk Mora, who will stand for the election of the director-general of  WHO for 2003, paid a courtesy call on Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein at the latter’s office on Pyidaunghsu Yeiktha Road in Dagon Township this morning.

At the meeting hall there, Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein explained health care tasks for the public in accordance with the policy of National Health Committee.

Director-General Dr Kyi Soe of the Health Planning Department briefed the visiting minister on implementation of national health care projects, Director-General Dr Wan Maung of the Health Department on implementation of health care tasks, Director-General Dr Maung Maung Wint of the Medical Science Department on tasks for development of human resources, Director-General Professor Dr Thein Swe of the Indigenous Medicine Department on upgrading of health care tasks using traditional medicine, and Deputy Director-General Dr Soe Thein of the Medical Research Department (Lower Myanmar) on endeavours for development of medical research in Myanmar.

Then, Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein and the directors-general replied to the queries raised by the visiting minister. The Mexican minister visited the Shwedagon Pagoda at  9 am and offered flowers and  lights to the images. After signing in the visitors’ book, the visiting minister made cash donation there.   


Reception to mark Independence Day held in Kunming

Yangon, 6 Jan - The Myanmar Consulate-General in Kunming held a reception to mark the 55th Anniversary Independence Day at Khaingwa Plaza International Hotel in Kunming on 4 January evening. Consul-General U Thein Zaw extended greetings and a dinner was hosted to the guests.

Hepatitis-B Vaccine Factory, Psychiatric Hospital inspected

Yangon, 6 Jan - Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein saw over the construction of Hepatitis-B Vaccine Factory of Medical Research Department (Lower Myanmar) near Sitpin Village in Hlegu Township this afternoon and attended to the needs. U Htwe Htwe of Golden Midas Construction Co Ltd reported to the minister on progress of work and targeted plans.

Later, the minister proceeded to Psychiatric Hospital (Yangon) and inspected the construction work at the hospital. U Aung Sein, Project Engineer of Asia World Co Ltd reported on progress of construction work and acting Medical Superintendent Dr Zaw Sein Lwin on health care services. The minister attended to the needs and also inspected other wards.


Work coordinated for study tour of UDNR trainees

Yangon, 6 Jan - The Management Committee for the Study Tour of Trainees of Course No 35 of the University for Development of National Races held its second coordination meeting at the Pyithu Hluttaw Building on Pyay Road here this afternoon.

Chairman of the Management Committee Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Myint Swe attended the meeting and delivered a speech.

Speaking on the occasion, Chairman of the Management Committee Maj-Gen Myint Swe said that the meeting being held today is the second meeting to coordinate the work progress according to the resolution of the first coordination meeting held on 27 December, adding that the trainees of UDNR will arrive here on 25 January 2003 and leave here on 30 January at the conclusion of their study tour. Coordination will have to be made again for their convenience during they stay in Yangon.

The sub-committees are to present progress of work and to make coordination if any difficulty arrise when carrying out future tasks. Officials will have to make collective efforts to see that the study tour helps forge the national solidarity as the trainees comprise various national races across the nation, he noted. In addition, the trainees are as young as the offspring of the officials concerned, warm welcome is to be extended to them, he stressed.

Then, Secretary of the Management Committee Director-General of Civil Service Selection and Training Department U Hla Kyi read the minutes of the first coordination meeting. Next, the Chairmen of the sub-committees and officials reported on work progress in the respective sectors and general matters. This was followed by a general round of discussions. The meeting ended with the concluding remarks by Chairman of the Management Committee Commander Maj-Gen Myint Swe.


Minister for Commerce inspects rice refinery

Yangon, 6 January - Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone this morning inspected 360-ton rice refinery of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading Enterprise in Hlainethaya and sites chosen for ware houses. At the briefing hall, the officials concerned reported on paving of gravel road in the factory, grinding of the mill, greening tasks and condition of fish breeding pounds.


PBANRDA Ministry opens courses

Yangon, 6 Jan - The management course No 15, basic engineering course No 2 and clerical courses No 22, 23 and 24 were opened at Central Training School of Education and Training Department of the Ministry of Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs in Ward 51 in Dagon Myothit (North) Township this morning.

Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt said the courses were conducted to enable the service personnel to improve their work efficiency, to have good morale and discipline and to possess qualifications compatible with their positions and ranks after realizing the orders, directives, rules and procedures.

He said engineers are to apply their knowledge in the task of supplying sufficient water in rural regions, constructing and maintaining roads and bridges, establishing model villages and drafting urban projects. Also present were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Than Tun and officials. Altogether 180 trainees are attending the courses.


Myanma Posts and Telecommunications opens training schools

Yangon, 6 Jan - The Data Base Management Course, the Facsimile Operator Training Course and the Spectrum Management Course were opened at Communication and Postal Training Centre of the Myanma Posts and Telecommunications of the Ministry of Communications, Posts and Telegraphs this morning, attended by Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Thein Zaw.

Then, Head of Office of the ministry U San Tin and Principal of the Training School U Soe accepted K 500,000, training aids and e-Library Software for the training school donated by Chief Executive Officer U Thaung Su Nyein of Inforithm Maze Ltd. Next, officials of Inforithm Maze Ltd explained the use of e-Library Software.


Rural development tasks inspected in Bhamo

Yangon, 6 Jan - A work coordination meeting on rural development of Bhamo District was held at Teingyar Minkhaung meeting hall of Bhamo Station on 3 January.

It was attended by Kachin State Peace and Development Council Commander of Northern Command Maj-Gen Maung Maung Swe, senior military officers, local authorities and officials.

The commander spoke of the need for the departments to cooperate with local people in carrying out rural development tasks.

After hearing the reports on matters on rural development tasks, the commander fulfilled the requirements and donated  K 67,000 for renovation of Myothit Hospital and   K 200,000 for Mongkhat   village Basic Education   Middle School to officials there.

Later, the commander and party inspected the  fingerling camp of the Fisheries Department in Khokyin village, Bhamo Township, and the construction of entrance road of Government Computer College (Bhamo), the site for the construction of the women’s domestic science school of the Education and Training Department of the Ministry of Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs.


Work coordination meeting on MICT Week exhibition held

Yangon, 6 Jan - A work coordination meeting on preparation for MICT Week exhibition, organized by the sub-committee for holding the exhibition, was held at MICT Park at 1 pm today. The exhibition  marks the first anniversary celebration of founding the MICT Park in Hline Township.

First, Chairman Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein explained facts about the arrangements for  ICT technology booths for the exhibition.

Secretary of the sub-committee Joint-Secretary of e-National Task Force U Tin Win Aung also explained the list of the sub-committee members, programmes of the exhibition and progress of work of the booths. Then, a general round of discussions followed.

Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein made a concluding remark and the meeting came to an end. The companies wishing to  import equipment to be displayed at the ICT exhibition by draw back system may contact the sub-committee (Tel-652275) for holding the exhibition in MICT Park, Hline Township, not later than 10 January .


Prize-presentation ceremony of School Family Day in Mandalay held  

Yangon, 6 Jan — No 2 Basic Education Department (Upper Myanmar) held a ceremony on 3 January morning to present School Family Day outstanding awards for the academic year 2002-2003 at Basic Education High School No 8 in Aungmyaythazan Township.

Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, first made an opening speech and Director-General Lt-Col Win Htein explained the purposes of holding the
ceremony.

Next, the commander presented K 314,000 contributed by Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council for the prize winning students to Director-General Lt-Col Win Htein. Then, the commander, the mayor and officials gave away prizes to the students and the ceremony came to an end.

The commander then inspected  the domestic science booth, art gallery, library and information booth displayed in the compound of the school.

At 10 am on 3 January the commander went to Hsinbyukan ground on Theikpan Street in Chanmyathazi Township where the year 2003 Myanma Industrial Exhibition will be held and inspected construction of the archway, booths, roads and arrangements for supply of water and electricity. He then left necessary instructions there.


Development activities inspected in Kalaw and Pindaya

Yangon, 6 Jan - Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council Commander of Eastern Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Myint accompanied by departmental officials inspected the diversion weir on Yebyu Creek, the sluice gate and water supply in Heho, Kalaw Township on 1 January. Officials reported on the construction of the diversion weir and then the commander attended to the needs.

The diversion weir is 200-ft long and 12-ft height, and it can irrigate over 250 acres of land.

The commander also heard reports on construction of Thamaingkhan diversion weir and Ayethaya dam in Kalaw and fulfilled the requirements. At 11 am, the commander attended a ceremony to open Myanma Economic Bank (Branch) in Pindaya Township and addressed it.

Next, the commander arrived at Myoma paddy purchase centre in Pindaya at 11.30 am. He cordially met with the local peasants who were collectively selling paddy and encouraged them. After inspecting the Wapon rice mill operated by a local, the commander attended to the needs.


H&T Deputy Minister inspects hotels at Ngwehsaung Beach

Yangon, 6 Jan - Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, inspected tasks being carried out by Elephant Camp and hotels at Ngwehsaung Beach in Pathein Township from 3 to 5 January.

On 3 January, the deputy minister and party arrived at the elephant camp, 10 miles from Ngwehsaung beach. Officials of Myanma Timber Enterprise reported on arrangements being made for eco-tourism service. The deputy minister gave necessary instructions.

On 4 January, the deputy minister and party inspected Ngwehsaung Beach Hotel, ChaungthaU Hotel, Silver View Hotel and Myanmar Treasure Beach Hotel at the beach. Officials reported on arrival of visitors and income. The deputy minister gave necessary instructions.

Entries invited to Armed Forces Day commemorative novel, short story and article competitions

Yangon. 6 Jan - The Working Committee for Observance of the 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commemorative Literary and Photo Competitions has announced that it will hold a novel, short story and article competitions. Entries for novel and short story are to be based on the 12 fine traditions of Tatmadaw and any suitable title can be given.

Words must be between 50,000 and 70,000 for the novel and 4,000 and 10,000 for short story. For the article competition, words must be between 3,000 and 5,000 under the title of "Union Spirit". Entries must be own creation and must not be prize-winning works in any other competitions.

A brief biography and two passport size photos are to be attached to the entries. Handsome prizes will be presented for the first, second and third prize winners as well as consolation prize winners of all categories. Entries are to be sent to U Ko Ko Htwe, Secretary of the Working Committee for Observance of the 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commemorative Literary and Photo Competitions, Myanma Radio and Television, Pyay Road, Yangon, not later than 15 January. 


Deputy Minister visits Independence Day Exhibition

Yangon, 6 Jan - Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein this afternoon visited the Independence Day Commemorative Exhibition being held at Tatmadaw Convention Hall on U Wisara road in Dagon Township and viewed round the booths.

The exhibition, which is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm, was packed with monks, service personnel, members of Dala Township Union Solidarity and Development Association, teachers, students and people totalling over 7,000. The exhibition will continue till 11 January.


Course on facts for life for housewives opened

Yangon, 6 Jan - Under the sponsorship of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association and UNICEF, the course on facts for life for housewives in Tamu and Mawlaik Townships in Sagaing Division, Dimawshso and Pruhso Townships in Kayah State and Mongkhat Township in Shan State (East) was opened at the multipurpose building of the association at the corner of Thanthuma and Parami Roads in South Okkalapa Township this morning. It was attended by Chairperson of MMCWA Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, CEC members, the patrons, officials of UNICEF and the Health Department, course instructors and trainees. The chairperson made a speech on the occasion. Altogether 55 trainees are attending the ten-day course.

Portable breathing apparatus donated to Taninthayi Hospital

Yangon, 6 Jan - The ceremony to present a portable breathing apparatus donated by the Government and local people of Taninthayi Township was held at the hospital in Taninthayi, Myeik District, on 31 December.
