Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-GenMyint Swe formally opened the ceremony which was held at the pagoda.
Pagoda Ovadacariya Sayadaw Vice-Chairman of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Bhaddanta Pañindabhivamsa of Aungmyebonsan Monastery administered the Five Precepts.
Buddhist monks led by Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pañindabhivamsa recited Metta Sutta and parittas.
The commander and officials presented offertories to Sayadaws.
Member of the Pagoda Board of Trustees U Ngwe Soe supplicated on religions matters, and vocalist Daw Yi Yi Thant sang a ratu “Buddha Puja Mangala”.
Pagoda Ovadacariya Sayadaws recited religious discourses.
Bells were rung for 24 times to mark the success of the ceremony.

Yangon, 8 Jan - A ceremony to open a workshop on ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) & ASEAN Integration System for Preferences (AISP) Implementation, jointly organized by the Ministry of Commerce of Myanmar, the Ministry of Trade of Thailand and the Royal Thai Embassy in Myanmar, was held at Kandawgyi Palace Hotel this morning.
It was attended by directors-general of the related ministries, departmental heads, officials of the Thai embassy, and officials of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
Director-General of Directorate of Trade U Nyunt Aye made an opening address and then Minister-Counsellor
(Commercial) of the Office of Commercial Affairs of the Royal Thai Embassy Mr Matyawongse Amatyakul
extended greetings.
Later, documents related to the AISP were handed over to U Nyunt Aye and the ceremony went into recess.
Afterwards, the workshop resumed and it continues tomorrow.

Yangon, 8 Jan - Cooperative Products Exhibition and Market Festival-2003, organized by the Ministry of Cooperatives, continued for the second day today from 9 am to 9 pm at the Cooperatives Commercial Centre (Saya San Plaza) at the corner of Saya San Road and new University Avenue. Minister for Cooperatives Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, directors-general , managing directors and directors of the departments and the enterprises under the ministry and the public visited the exhibition.
The opening ceremony of Seminar on Sustainable Development and Myanma Cooperatives was held at the same venue and chairman of subcommittee for the seminar Cooperative Exports and Imports Enterprise Deputy General Manager U Saw Oo extended greetings. First, Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe delivered an address on the occasion.
Then, resource persons U Kyaw Myint, U Tin Aye, U Paw Hein and U Kyaw Lin presented their papers. The
second day session of the seminar will continue tomorrow.
At the festival, cooperative societies from states and divisions, State-owned organizations, companies and entrepreneurs are selling their products such as traditional costumes and household things, consumer products,kitchen utensils, forest products, marine products, herbal products, stationery, farm machinery, chemical fertilizers, natural fertilizers, construction materials, motorcars and parts, import-substitute domestic products, paintings, sculptures, home decorations, furniture and cosmetics at the booths.
Entertainment programmes for sales promotion are presented on the third floor and colour photo show on he ground floor at the festival. The festival continues tomorrow and anyone can visit it free of charge.

Yangon, 8 Jan - Minister for Culture Maj-Gen Kyi Aung this morning arrived at the work site for excavation of King Bayintnaung's Kanbawzathadi Palace where Assistant Director U Myat Swe, Archaeological Department Director Daw Sanda Khin and Deputy Superintending Engineer U Kyi Tun reported to the minister on repairs of sidewalks along the hillocks from Nos 1 to 5, arrangements for planting of flowers in front of Bamarathana Throne and extension of the roundabout and other renovation tasks. The minister then inspected renovation and greening tasks and progress in the construction of the palace.

Yangon, 8 Jan - The State Flag hoisting and saluting ceremony in commemoration of the 55th Anniversary Independence Day was held in front of the Independence Monument in Mawrawadi Park in Mawlamyine on 4 January morning.
After the flag raising ceremony at 4.20 am on 4 January, the flag saluting ceremony followed at 7 am. Chairman of Mon State Peace and Development Council Commander of South-East Command Maj-Gen Thura Myint Aung and those present saluted the State Flag. Then, the commander read out the message sent to 55th AnniversaryIndependence Day by Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe and the ceremony came to an end.
Afterwards, the commander also attended the prize presentation ceremony held at the Division Hall and he commander, Lt-Col Aung Maw Maw and officials presented prizes to the winners of essay, poem and art competitions. the 55th anniversary Independence Day was held today at Mindhamma field in Mayangon Township.
Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor of Yangon U Ko Lay attended the ceremony. Leading Patrons of the Myanmar Horticulturists Association Daw Khin Than Nwe, Daw Khin Lay Thet, Daw Mar Lar Tint, Daw Khin Thet Htay, Daw Aye Aye, Daw Khin Hla Hla, Daw Kyin Khine, Daw Kyu Kyu Win and Daw Khin Khin presented prizes to the winners who won prizes in nine categories including floral decorations, seasonal flowers, indoor and outdoor garden crotons, roses and bonsai plants.
Then, Mayor U Ko Lay awarded the cup to U Aung Win who won in 18 categories. On behalf of the winners, U Aung Win spoke words of thanks. It was also attended by YCDC Secretary Col Myint Aung, Joint Secretary U Kyi Win and committee members, judges, invited guests and horticulturists.

Yangon, 8 Jan - The rehearsal of the opening ceremony of the 12th Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air Force)
Military Band Competition in honour of the 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day was held at the People's
Square this morning. Chairman of the committee for holding of military bands competition Vice-Adjutant
General Maj-Gen Maung Nyo inspected the rehearsl. The military bands practised according to the agenda of
the opening day. The Military Band Competition will be held on 10 January.

A ceremony to honour U Hla Shwe, a former chairman of township war veterans organization, was held at the
meeting hall of the Union Solidarity and Development Association in Hsipaw Township, Shan State (North), on
30 December.
U Hla Shwe, 70, travelled on his bicycle from Rakhine State to Shan State as a gesture of hailing “No Tobacco Day”. “In spite of my old age, I do not take drugs but take physical exercises. I even do not smoke. That’s why I endure the strain of such a long journey”, he said. He advised new generation to stay away from tobacco. After making a night at Hsipaw, he continued his trip to Taunggyi, his destination.The Hlawga Wildlife Park of the Forest Department and Sunrise Education Centre will jointly organize a photo competition on the environmental conservation, aiming to stimulate the public awareness of the environmental issues. Entry photos of natural beauty as well as those of environmental protection activities can be sent to Sunrise Education Centre not later than 28 February. Prizes will be K 200,000 for first prize, K 150,000 for second prize, and K 100,000 for third prize. Rural road opened in Thazi Township
A ceremony to put Myayso-Montaw-Okshitkon-Maungmasai rural road into service was held at a pandal near Okshitkon village on 2 January. Present on the occasion were local authorities, departmental personnel, members of social organizations and the local people.

Independence Day celebrations Mandalay
A ceremony to celebrate the 55th Anniversary Independence Day was held at the Kyauktaing Ground in Nanmyo, Mandalay, at 7 am on 4 January. Present on the occasion were Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and
Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint and wife, Chairman of Mandalay City Development Committee Brig-Gen Yan Thein, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Nay Win, Deputy Chief Justice U Khin Maung Latt of Supreme Court (Upper Myanmar), Tatmadaw officers, departmental personnel, local authorities and residential people.
The message sent by Head of State Senior General Than Shwe on the occasion of the Independence Day was read out by Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint.
In hailing the 55th Anniversary of the Independence Day, track & field tournament and sports games were held at the Central Command. The commander and wife and officials presented prizes to the winners. Similarly, sports games were held township-wise by the local authorities.

Rural gravelled road opens
As a gesture of hailing the 55th Anniversary of the Independence Day, the Nantkut-Dawkaloko gravel road (Nantkut section) linking Nantkut Village and Dawkaloku Village in Loikaw Township, Kayah State, was inaugurated on 3 January morning. The road is 3,426 feet long and 12 feet wide.
Yangon, 8 Jan - The Sub-committee for organizing the 56th Anniversary Union Day Dinner and Entertainment held the first coordination meeting at the meeting hall of the Ministry of Culture in Bahan township this afternoon.
Present were Chairman of the sub-committee Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt and sub-committee members, departmental officials, those of Myanmar Motion Pictures Asiayon and Myanmar Music Asiayon and

Yangon, 8 Jan - Mandalay Division Union Solidarity and Development Association held divisional level extempore talks competition to hail the 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day (2003) at the office of the association on 5 January morning.

The commander made an opening speech and leader of judges read out the rules of the competition.
The commander attended the ceremony held at Yadanabon Hall of Myanmar Medical Association (Mandalay) at 9 am to honour blood donors who donated blood 25 times and above. Medical Superintendent of Mandalay General Hospital Dr Win Shein and U Maung Maung Htay who donated blood 103 times expressed their words of thanks at the ceremony.
The commander and officials presented certificates and badges of honour to 289 blood donors (25 times and
above) and associations that organized the ceremony.

Yangon, 8 Jan - The 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commemorative Literary and Photo Competition
Organizing Work Committee has already announced that it will hold the photo competition.
The titles of colour photo competitions are ‘Developing Myanmar’ and ‘Preserving Cultural Heritage’ and the four entries can be presented for each title. Entries must be print photos by the size of at least 10 by 12 inches. Those who won the first, second and third prizes in the previous years will be categorized into a separated group and there will be a great chance for new competitions.
Data and captions are to be described in a separate sheet of paper and to be attached to the entries. Entries must be won creation and must not be prize-winning works in any other competitions. Handsome prizes will be presented to first, second and third prize winners as well as consolation prizes winners of each competitions.
The first, second and third prizes will be presented at the ceremony to mark the 58th Anniversary Armed Forces to be held in Yangon on 27 March 2002. The consolation prizes will be presented at the Anniversary Armed Forces ceremonies at the respective military commands. Entries are to be send to Director U Tun Min of Information and Public Relations Department, 22-24, Pansodan Street, Yangon, not later than 14 February 2003.

Yangon, 8 Jan— Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern Command Maj-Gen Aung Min and officials inspected Pathi Dam and Pathi Hydro electric power Project site in Toungoo on 7 January.
Assistant Director of Toungoo District Irrigation Department U Zaw Htut Oo reported on data of the project, main canal and other canals and irrigation to 1,200 acres of farmlands and Deputy Director of Hydro Electric Power Department (No 3 Construction Group) U Khin Maung Lat on construction of building for 2 megawatts turbines and requirements.
The commander then gave instructions. He went to Kyauktaing coffee farm of Myanma Agriculture Service. Farm in-charge Daw Thida Shwe reported on plantation of pepper, coffee, Thitseint (Bellaric Myrobalan) and long pepper (Piper longum) and distribution of saplings to the people and mushroom farm in-charge Daw Khin Aye Cho on production of medicinal Linzi mushroom.Pathi Dam and Pathi Hydro electric power.
The commander gave instructions on extended cultivation of coffee and pepper and holding of educative talks on cultivation and inspected the plantations.
There are 150,000 saplings of Thitseint (Bellaric Myrobalan), coffee and pepper in the farm and they are being distributed to local people. The commander inspected Shwemyezi natural fertilizer plant of Arkar Kyaw Co. The fertilizer plant will produce 6,250 tons of fertilizer this year.

Commander attends School Family Day, Independence Day ceremony
Yangon, 8 Jan - Shan State (East) Peace and Development Council Chairman Triangle Region Commad Commander Brig-Gen Khin Zaw attended the ninth graduation ceremony of the Nursing School in Kengtung, Shan State (East), on 31 December morning.
The commander made an opening speech and Nursing School Management Committee Chairman Shan State (East) Health Department Joint-Head Dr Sai Kham Hlaing explained facts about the nursing school. Then, Principal Daw Khin Myo Nge offered caps and duty coats to 53 trainees. Then, the ceremony came to a close.
After the ceremony, the commander and officials inspected lecture halls, multimedia classrooms and demonstration rooms, and greening tasks for the school.
The commander then inspected construction site of City Hall on Airport Road in Kengtung and gave necessary instructions. The City Hall built at a cost of K 227.4 million will be 214 feet in length and 120 feet in width.
On 3 January morning, the commander attended the ceremony to unveil Education Goal stone inscriptions of No 3 BEHS, Kengtung, and School Family Day, held at the school. After unveiling the stone inscriptions, the commander made a speech and Joint-Head of Shan State (East) Education Department spoke words of thanks. Then, outstanding students and school in the state were presented prizes.
After enjoying the skill demonstration of the students, the commander inspected domestic science booth, fine arts booth and drug elimination booth there.
On 4 January, the commander attended the flag hoisting ceremony and the 55th Anniversary Independence Day ceremony held at the Parade Ground of Kengtung Station. The message of Head of State Senior General Than Shwe was read and the ceremony came to a close.

Yangon, 8 Jan - Golden Jubilee of No 2 Basic Education High School, Monywa, was held at the school on 1
January morning. Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander of North-West
Command Maj-Gen Soe Naing attended it.
The first Headmaster and Ex-Ambassador U Maung Maung Soe Tint unveiled the golden jubilee stone plaque and signboard. Then, those present viewed round the domestic science booth, audio lab room and booth on history of the school. Later, the commander and officials awarded prizes to the outstanding students who won distinctions in 2002 and one who won 11 gold medals in State level traditional performing arts competition.
In the afternoon, the commander attended the 5th rice offering ceremony of Chindwin Rice Offering Association, Monywa. First, those present took Five Precepts from State Avadacirira Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Kavita. At the ceremony, the North-West Command, departments and wellwishers offered 1,464 bags of rice and 200 viss of edible oil to 161 monasteries and 22 nunneries.

Yangon, 8 Jan - Chairman of the leading committee for the holding of School Family Day Minister for Education U Than Aung gave a dinner in honour of those who volunteered in School Family Day for the 2002-2003 academic year, on the lawns before the Diamond Jubilee Hall on Pyay Road at 6.30 pm yesterday.
Students from Sangyoung BEHS-2, Dagon BEHS-1, Latha BEHS-2, Dagon BEHS-2, Kamayut BEHS-2 and Botahtaung BEHS-5 staged performances. After the speech of the Minister, the dinner was served.

Yangon, 8 Jan - The second day events of Myanmar Professional Golfers Associations and Myanmar Golf Federation President’s Trophy 2002-2003 men’s and women’s golf tournaments jointly organized by Myanmar
Professional Golfers Association and MGF and sponsored by Rothmans of Pall Mall Myanmar Pte Ltd, continued at Hanthawaddy Golf and Country Club in Bago Township at 8 am today.
After the second day 18-hole event, defending champion Soe Kyaw Naing (Wilson) led the event with 139 strokes. Min Naing (Srixon) took the second position with 140 strokes and Myint Thaung (KM Golf Centre) the third position with 146 strokes in Professional Golfers Division. In the second day event of Men’s Amateur Division, Zaw Zin Win, who took the second position in the first day’s event, occupied the first position with 143 strokes. Zaw Zaw Latt took the second position with 144 strokes, and Aung Aung Kyaw the third position with 148 strokes.
In the first day of 18-hole scratch event in Women’s Amateur Division , Khin Thu Thu (YCDC) led the others
with 77 strokes.
After the first day of 18-hole handicap event in Women’s Amateur Division, Khin Thu Thu and Yin Yin Aye shared the first position with 70 strokes each and Htaik Htaik and Aye Aye Than the second position with 1 strokes each. Miss Eun Joo of the Republic of Korea took the third position with 72 strokes.
The tournaments are being co-sponsored by Air Mandalay as official airline, Cannon (ACCEL International Co Ltd) as official office equipment supplier, Wilson and KM Golf Centre as official golf equipment suppliers, Asia Wealth Bank as official bank, Loi-Hein (Alpine) Purified Drinking Water as official drinking water supplier, Grand Royal Special Reserve Whisky as official whisky and Hanthawaddy Golf and Country Club. same venue at 8 am tomorrow.Yangon, 8 Jan - On 25 January 2002, Yangon Division Bureau of Special Investigation revealed that Kyaw Hlaing (a) Yaw Hpa Li of Mawra Giwa Ward, Chanayethazan Township in Mandalay, carried 240 kilos of heroin blocks and 6.5 million stimulant pills on board Shwengagyi motor boat from Kyauktada jetty near Thakayta rice warehouses in Mingala-taungnyunt Township to the fishing boat of Thailand in Adman Sea in December 2000. The drug trafficker, making contacts with groups from abroad, had carried and sold 1,427 kilos of heroin, 138.7 million stimulants, 28,197.2 kilos of ephedrine powder, 12,100 kilos of caffeine and 12 viss of opium since 1992.
The Mingalataungnyunt Police Station filed the drug trafficker, 43, son of U Roger Yin, under Sections 19 (A), (B), (D), 20 (B), 22 (A) and 21 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Yangon Division court held a special court and handed down unlimited years of imprisonment under Sections 19 (B), 21 and 22 (A), unlimited years of imprison-ment under Sections 19 (D), 21, 22(A), a death sentence under Sections 20 (B), 21, 22 (A) on Kyaw Hlaing (a) Yaw Hpa Li. The court passed a sentence of death on the culprit by hanging him till death under Section 368 (1).
