Foreign Head of State sends felicitations to Chairman of 
State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe

Yangon, 10 Jan - The following is the message of felicitations from foreign Head of State sent to Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar, on the occasion of the 55th Anniversary Independence Day of the Union of Myanmar.

On behalf of the Government and the people of the Republic of Indonesia and on my own behalf, I am pleased to convey to you our heartiest felicitations on the most auspicious occasion of the anniversary of the Independence Day of the Union of Myanmar. Vice Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China to visit Myanmar

Yangon, 11 Jan - At the invitation of the Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar His Excellency General Khin Nyunt, Vice Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China His Excellency Mr Li Lanqing will pay an official visit to the Union of Myanmar in the near future.

Myanmar Accountancy Council hosts welcome dinner to delegates of 76th Council Meeting of AFA 

Yangon, 10 Jan - The Myanmar Accountancy Council hosted a welcome dinner to the Chairman of ASEAN Federation of Accountants and members to the 76th Council Meeting of ASEAN Federation of Accountants, at Sedona Hotel on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road at 7 pm today.

Present on the occasion were ministers, the Chief Justice, the Attorney-General, the Chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board, Chairman of ASEAN Federation of Accountants Council Mr Paitoon Taveebhol and council members of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, Lao PDR and Thailand, candidate council members, observers from Cambodia, the Vice-Chairman of MAC Deputy Auditor-General and members, departmental officials and guests.

First, Chairman of MAC Auditor-General Brig-Gen Tin Aye extended greetings at the dinner. He said:

On the auspicious occasion of 76th AFA Council Meeting, I find myself filled with a deep sense of pride and pleasure as I am here to extend, as Chairman of Myanmar Accountancy Council and Auditor-General as well, my warm and sincere welcome to you all.

For the time being AFA has nine prime members from ASEAN countries other than Cambodia. The choice of your meeting venue in Yangon gives us a chance to show Myanmar’s hospitality and friendliness to AFA colleagues. Moreover, we are obliged to give priority to any activities where ASEAN is concerned.

In the near future, we hope all ASEAN countries will be completely clustered in AFA, in line with ASEAN spirit and sharing of mutual interest and exploring new developments taking place globally in the profession of accounts and audit.

As we all know, the role of accountants and auditors in promoting of the country’s economic growth is considerably enormous. We appreciate AFA’s participation in ASEAN’s efforts to stand up to the economic challenges of the world today by way of strengthening the accounts and audit forces.

Our country Myanmar, also has a strong background of accounts and audit profession which is systematically formulated and practised to this day.

I sincerely hope this meeting will bring broad and better understanding of accounts and audit activities amongst ASEAN nations. I earnestly wish for the success of 76th AFA meeting  and also believe that the results of it will materially contribute to the field of accounts and audit in the ASEAN countries and friends.

Once again, I extend my hearty welcome you all to Myanmar in this beautiful month of January.  I am sure you will be able to see how Myanmar is striving for development of the nation and the symbol of peace and tranquillity in every aspect.

Then, the Chairman of Myanmar Accountancy Council and the Chairman of AFA Federation of Accountants and members exchanged souvenirs.

Delegates to AFA Meeting arrive

Yangon, 10 Jan - A total of 25 delegates have arrived here to attend the 76th Council Meeting of ASEAN Federation of Accountants (AFA) at Sedona Hotel on 10 and 11 January. Altogether 15 delegates from Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, Singapore and Lao PDR arrived here this morning and afternoon.


Singaporean, Myanmar specialists perform facial surgery

Yangon, 10 Jan - Altogether 13 specialists of plastic, maxillo-facial and oral surgery from Singapore together with Commandant of Defence Services Orthopaedic Hospital (500-bed) Lt-Col Tun Tun and specialists gave surgical treatments to 25 patients at Defence Services Orthopaedic Hospital (500-bed) yesterday and today. Deputy Director Col Than Aung viewed the surgical treatments at the hospital and fulfilled their needs.

Lt-Gen Maung Bo inspects regional development in Kayin, Mon States          

Yangon, 10 Jan - Member of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Maung Bo arrived at Sittaung Bridge on 8 January.

Then, Lt-Gen Maung Bo inspected tasks for strengthening the Sittoung Bridge being undertaken by MR. Senior Engineer U Myo Win reported on progress of work to Lt-Gen Maung Bo who gave instructions on soonest completion of the task.

Afterwards, Lt-Gen Maung Bo and party inspected renovation of Yangon-Myeik Road and Yangon-Sittoung Road being undertaken by Shwe Than Lwin Co and    renovation of Sittoung-Mottama Road being undertaken by Public Works. Officials reported on the respective renovation tasks to Lt-Gen Maung Bo who left necessary instructions.

Next, Lt-Gen Maung Bo and party inspected summer paddy field near Zotthok Village in Bilin Township. Chairman of Bilin Township Peace and Development Council U Khin Zaw reported on cultivation of summer and monsoon paddy, winter crops and pulses and beans in the township.

Later, Lt-Gen Maung Bo, the commander and the deputy minister attended to the needs. They then inspected cultivation of summer paddy  and threshing of monsoon paddy in the field of Farmer U Tin Min  and fulfilled the requirements.

Then, Lt-Gen Maung Bo and party inspected No 2 Basic Education High School in Thaton and gave instructions to officials.

While in Thaton, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Khin Maung met with Mon State, District and Township  agricultural supervisory committee members and gave instructions on timely completion in cultivation of summer paddy and boosting the per acre yield.

Lt-Gen Maung Bo and party left Thaton by car and arrived in Hpa-an, Kayin State in the evening.

Lt-Gen Maung Bo and party, accompanied by Chairman of Kayin State Peace and Development Council Col Cho Tun and departmental officials, arrived at the river water pumping project in Tayokhla Village, Hap-an Township on 9 January morning.

Deputy Director-General U Hla Myint Maung of Water Resources Utilization Department reported on work being carried out and future tasks, Kayin State Myanma Agriculture Services U Kyaw Thein, Chairman of Kayin State Peace and Development Council Col Cho Tun and Hpa-an District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Soe Myint Aung reported on cultivation and production of crops in the village.

Lt-Gen Maung Bo, the commander and the deputy minister attended to the needs. The river water pumping project in the village is irrigating about 700 acres of farmland.

Next, Lt-Gen Maung Bo and party inspected cultivation of summer paddy by means of the river water pumping and fulfilled the requirements.

In the afternoon, Lt-Gen Maung Bo and party proceeded to the 500 acre land reclamation site in Kawkanin Region, Kyaikmaraw Township, Mon State. Chairman of Mawlamyine District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Thaw Zin reported on work being carried out for land reclamation, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Khin Maung on formation of  the project and implementation, Deputy Minister for Livestock Breeding and Fisheries U Aung Thein on assistance to be provided to the families engaged in the farming.

After giving necessary instructions, Lt-Gen Maung Bo presented seeds to Farmer U Naing Aung Lin.

Then, they proceeded to the monastery in Tarana Village and presented offertories to Sayadaw and members of the Sangha. In the afternoon, Lt-Gen Maung Bo and party arrived at the road and bridge construction project site in Kado Kawnat and Zathabyin Villages and fulfilled the needs.

Lt-Gen Maung Bo and party this morning arrived at Bilin Sugar Mill in Bilin Township where they were welcomed by the factory manager and staff members.

Afterwards, Lt-Gen Maung Bo and party heard a report  on purchasing and crushing of sugarcane  presented  by Factory Manager U Aung Thura. Then, the factory manager conducted Lt-Gen Maung Bo and party round the mill. Then, Lt-Gen Maung Bo and party left there by car and arrived back here in the evening.


12th Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air) Military Band Competition opened

Yangon, 10 Jan - The opening ceremony of the 12th Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air) Military Band Competition to mark the 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day was held at the People's Square on Pyay Road at 8 am today, attended by Chairman of the Leading Committee for Observance of the 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Armed Forces Training Lt-Gen Kyaw Win. At 7.30 am, the military bands took their places at the People's Square and saluted Lt-Gen Kyaw Win. Then, they saluted the State Flag and the fallen Tatmadawmen and took the Four Oaths.

Next, Lt-Gen Kyaw Win delivered an address. Then, the military bands saluted the Chairman of the Leading Committee and left the People's Square.

After the opening ceremony, the bands comprising students of Hmawby Basic Education High School No 1 and Botahtaung BEHS No 4, the bands representing Fire Services Department and Myanmar Police Force, the Guard of Honour of Defence Services and the band of the Military Band Unit performed skill demonstration.

Then, Lt-Gen Kyaw Win accepted K 500,000 each for the Organizing Committee donated by U Khin Maung Htoo of American Service (Myanmar) Co and U Saw Aung Naing of Myanma Alin Musical Instrument Company. The certificates of honour were presented to the wellwishers. Next, Lt-Gen Kyaw Win presented cash prizes to the leaders of the bands which participated in the skill demonstration.

Altogether 51 bands from the Commander-in-Chief (Navy)'s Office, the Commander-in-Chief (Air)'s Office, military commands, Light Infantry Divisions and military training schools are taking part in the competition.

Yangon Division Supervisory Committee for Ensuring Smooth and Secure Transport meets

Yangon, 10 Jan - The work coordination meeting of Yangon Division Supervisory Committee for Ensuring Smooth and Secure Transport was held at the head office of the All Bus Lines Control Committee (Yangon Division) in Tamway Township at 5 pm today. Chairman of the supervisory committee Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Myint Swe made an address at the meeting.

In his address, the commander highlighted the measures to be taken by the supervisory committee for the convenience of commuters travelling in and out of the division by car, train, air and ship daily; tasks to be carried out by the members of the supervisory committee and chairmen of bus lines for the observance of traffic rules by drivers and conductors; petrol being distributed at its original price of K 180 per gallon and diesel also at its original price of K 160 per gallon. Effective measures for offences of prescribed bus fare and rude behaviours of conductors to the passengers.

Then, members of the supervisory committee reported on arrangements for convenience of passengers, punctuality of buses, trains and ships, sanitation works at terminals, and chairmen of bus lines, on supervision work of bus lines. Afterwards, the meeting came to a close with the concluding remarks by the commander.


Minister inspects road construction works

Yangon, 10 Jan - Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun inspected the upgrading tasks of Yangon-Pyay Road on 8 January morning.

Superintending Engineers of Yangon and Bago Divisions, and officials of Road Construction Special Group-15 reported to the minister on work done. Then, the minister inspected the maintenance of Pyay-Padaung-Taungup Road. The minister heard reports on works being carried out in Rakhine State and Bago Division of the road by responsible officials and gave instructions on efficient use of machinery and work to be carried out in the open season. The minister and party this morning proceeded along Maei-Kyaukphyu Road by car and inspected the gravel laying and earth works on Taungup-Maei section of the road. Bridges on the 42-mile and 4-furlong long road including Taishe-Tanlwe-Lamu and Maei have been constructed.


Minister inspects livestock breeding farms

Yangon, 10 Jan - Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hling, together with Director-General of Prisons Department U Kyaw Tun and departmental officials, arrived at Kyaiksakaw livestock breeding farm in DaikU Township, Bago Division, this morning.

At the meeting hall, Director of Prisons Department U Win Myint and farm in- charge U Kyaw Shein reported to the minister on pig breeding, raising of broilers and layers, cultivation of monsoon and summer paddy, fish breeding, and plantations of annual and perennial crops. Director-General of Prisons Department U Kyaw Tun then made additional reports. The minister gave necessary instructions and inspected pigsties, poultry farms and fish breeding ponds. The minister then cordially met with staff and their families and attended to their needs.

In the evening, the minister and party inspected Hlayhlawinn livestock breeding farm in Hlegu Township. The minister heard reports presented by officials on work being carried out at the farm. Then, officials conducted the minister and party round the farm.  Afterwards, the minister left necessary instructions.


Home Minister meets service personnel

Yangon, 10 Jan - Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing met with service personnel of Myanmar Police Force, the General Administration Department, the Prisons Department and Bureau of Special Investigation at the combined building of the Ministry of Home Affairs this morning and made a speech concerning the political, economic and social situations of the  Union of Myanmar and responsibilities of service personnel.

In his speech, the minister urged those present to shoulder the responsibilities of the ministry with duty consciousness, to implement the tasks of the ministry successfully and to safeguard the State.


New  Wakema Township Court opened

Yangon, 10 Jan - A ceremony to open new Wakema Township Court in Ayeyawady Division was held at the new building this morning, attended by Chief-Justice U Aung Toe, Attorney-General U Tha Tun, Director-General U Tin Aye of Supreme Court, the directors of the Supreme Court and Attorney-General’s Office, local authorities, judges and departmental officials.


Cash and kind donated to Tatmadaw Day parade column

Yangon, 10 Jan - The Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement held a ceremony to donate cash and provisions to fire brigade members of Aung San column who will participate in the military parade of the 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day, at the meeting hall of the ministry at 10 am today. It was attended by Deputy Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement U Hling Win.

First, on behalf of the well-wishers, U Aye Than of Prime Boss Co Ltd explained the purpose of the donation, and then Deputy Minister U Hlaing Win and officials accepted the donations.

Next, the director-general spoke words of thanks to well-wishers. A total of  36 well-wishers made donations to fire brigade members.

Deputy Minister visits Independence Day Exhibition

Yangon, 10 Jan - Deputy Minister for Information U Thein Sein visited the 55th Anniversary Independence Day Exhibition being opened at Tatmadaw Convention Hall on U Wisara Road in Dagon Township this morning.

Departmental personnel, members of Thingangyun Township Union Solidarity and Development Association and Kyimyindine Township Red Cross Society, students and teachers of basic education primary and middle schools in Dagon, Kamayut, Yankin, Hline, Insein, Thakayta and Dawbon Townships, monks, nuns and laity totalling over 9,000 visited the exhibition today.


Patients undergo surgical operations in Chin State

Yangon, 10 Jan - Jointly organized by the Ministry of Health, Chin State Peace and Development Council, Chin State Maternal and Child Welfare Association and MFF Co, a team led by Dr Khin Maung Lwin of the Plastic, Maxillo-facial and Oral Surgery Department of Yangon General Hospital and surgeons of German Interplast conducted medical check-ups on 1,132 patients. They conducted 119 surgical operations on 79 cleft lip and palate patients, 11 patients with eye complaints, 2 orthopaedic patients, 2 patients with ENT diseases, 20 patients with burns and others, and 5 patients who were to be operated.

Temporary river-crossing bridge opened

The temporary river-crossing bridge on Sittoung river linking Natthankwin village of Kyaukkyi township with Kwinchaungwa village of Kyauktaga township in Bago Division was put into service on 1 January. As a result, Kyaukkyi-Yangon and Kyaukkyi-Taungoo highway buses are now using the bridge. Moreover, owing to the direct link between Yangon and Kyaukkyi, it is reported that the Kyemon, the Myanma Ahlin and the New Light of Myanmar dailies published by the News and Periodicals Enterprise can now be read on the same date of their issue.

Paddy sold collectively in Paukkhaung

A ceremony to sell paddy collectively for the year 2002-2003 took place at the paddy purchase centre-3 of Inngagwa village in Paukkhaung township on 24 December morning. Chairman of western Bago Division Peace and Development Council Col Tin Maung Win attended the ceremony and addressed it.

On the occasion, 199 peasants from four paddy purchase centres in the township sold 8,497 baskets of paddy.

New tube-well for rural water supply

To mark the 55th Anniversary Independence Day, a ceremony to inaugurate a tube-well as part of rural water supply programme was held at Malaysu village in DaikU township on 1 January. Township authorities inaugurated the tube-well, and then officials of Bago Division Development Affairs Committee viewed the people fetching water at the tube-well.

Soe Kyaw Naing retains champion in MPGA & MGF President’s Trophy Golf Tournament

Yangon, 10 Jan - The final round and prize presentation ceremony of the Myanmar Professional Golfers Association and Myanmar Golf Federation President’s Trophy Women’s and Men’s Golf Tournament for 2002-2003, organized by MPGA and MGF and sponsored by Rothmans of Pall Mall Myanmar Pte Ltd, was held at Hanthawady Golf and Country Club in Bago this evening. Present were MGF President Maj-Gen Win Hlaing, General Secretary U Aung Kyi, executives, guests and spectators.

After the fourth round, the prize presentation ceremony followed. President Maj-Gen Win Hlaing gave a speech.

Then, MGF executive U Tin Ngwe presented prizes to daily best nett score golfers Yin Yin Aye and Khin Khin Thu with 70 strokes each in the first round, Aye Aye San with 69 in the second round, Aye Aye San, Khin Thu Thu, Swe Swe Win and Eun Joo of the Republic of Korea with 71 each in the third round in the women’s amateur golfer division. Joint-Secretary U Rae Htet Doe of MGF presented prizes to daily best players Aung Win with 71 strokes in the first round, Zaw Zin Win with 70 in the second round, Kyi Hla with 71 in the third round and Zaw Zaw Latt with 71 in the fourth round in the men’s amateur golfer division.

MPGA General Secretary U Chan Han also presented prizes to daily best golfers Soe Kyaw Naing (Wilson) with 67 strokes in the first round, Min Naing (Srixon) with 70 in the second round, Aung Hla Han (Wilson) with 69 in the third round and Nanda Kyaw (YCDC) with 68 in the fourth round in the professional golfer division.

MGF executive U Ko Ko Lay presented first, second and third prizes to Aye Aye San with 212 strokes, Htaik Htaik with 214 and Yin Yin Aye with 214 in the women’s amateur handicap event respectively and the first prize to Khin Thu Thu (YCDC) with 228 in the women’s scratch event.

MPGA and MGF President Maj-Gen Win Hlaing gave away prizes to the Myanmar amateur golf team which won the third prize in the 42nd Putra Cup Golf Tour for 2002 held in Hong Kong and Zaw Zaw Latt who won the second prize in the individual event. The President also presented first, second and third prizes to defending champion Soe Kyaw Naing (Wilson) with 280 strokes in the professional golfer division, Min Naing (Srixon) with 282 and Aung Win (YCDC) with 288 respectively. Commercial Director Mr Anthony Wong of Rothmans of Pall Mall Myanmar Pte Ltd presented cheque for the cash prize to champion Soe Kyaw Naing (Wilson) and gifts for Hanthawady Golf and Country Club to Club Director Lt-Col Lay Myint (Retd).

The tournament was jointly sponsored by Air Mandalay, Canon (Accel International Co Ltd), Wilson, KM Golf Centre, AWB Bank, Loi Hein, Grand Royal Special Reserve Whisky, Sunfar Travels and Tours, Pan-West (Myanmar), Champion Golf Shop and Hanthawady Golf and Country Club.

The tournament was also organized by Han Event Management. 


Drug

Heroin and raw opium seized

Yangon, 10 Jan - A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Muse Special Anti-drug Squad, acting on information, on 18 December 2002 stopped and searched a van near the entrance to Kyugoke Pansai and arrested Shaungshata and Ma Martan with 50 bags of heroin weighing 17.5 kilos.

Similarly, a com-bined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Bhamo Special Anti-drug Squad, acting on a tip-off, on 21 December searched farm trolley with number plates 2 hta / 9614 in Mansi and arrested Arlyanwutsin together with 1.143 kilos of raw opium.

Action is being taken against them by Myanmar police stations concerned under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.
