Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing arrive back from China on their State Visit
Yangon, 11 Jan - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar Prime Minister Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing arrived back here from Kunming by special flight at 4.20 pm today after paying the State Visit to the People's Republic of China at the invitation of President of the People's Republic of China Mr Jiang Zemin.
The Myanmar delegation led by Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing were welcomed back at Yangon International Airport by Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) Vice-Senior General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San.
Together with Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing, Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt and wife Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, members of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Ye Myint and Lt-Gen Aung Htwe, Chairman of Shan State (North) Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen Myint Hlaing, Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung and wife, Minister for Information Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut, Military Assistant to the State Peace and Development Council Chairman Maj-Gen Nay Win Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Deputy Minister for Health Prof Dr Kyaw Myint, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office and departmental heads also arrived back here on the same flight.

Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing visit Hua Wei Beijing Research & Development Centre, meet staff of Myanmar Embassy
Yangon, 11 Jan - At the invitation of President of the People's Republic of China Mr Jiang Zemin, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing, accompanied by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt and wife Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and party, left Yangon International Airport by special flight of Myanma Airways International at 8 am on 6 January to pay a State Visit to the People's Republic of China and arrived at Kunming International Airport in Yunnan Province of the People's Republic of China at 11.20 am local time.
The Senior General and wife and party were welcomed at the airport by Yunnan Province Governor Mr Xu Rong Kai, Vice-Governor Mr Niu Shao Yao, Kunming City Mayor Mr Zhang Zhang Guo and senior officers, Myanmar Ambassador to the PRC U Sein Win Aung, Consul-General U Thein Zaw and wife, staff and families of Myanmar Consulate-General in Kunming.
Then, the Senior General and wife cordially conversed with Yunnan Province Governor Mr Xu Rong Kai and officials at the Special Lounge of Kunming Airport.
Next, the Senior General and wife and party left Kunming and arrived at the Capital International Airport in Beijing at 3.30 pm local time.
Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party were welcomed there by Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China Mr Wang Yi, Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar Mr Li Jinjun and wife and party, ambassadors of ASEAN countries in PRC, Myanmar Military Attache Col Sein Gyawt, staff of the Myanmar Embassy and the office of the Military Attache and families.
Afterwards, the Senior General and wife and party spent the night at Diaoyutai State Guest House in Beijing.
At 9.30 am on 7 January, the Senior General and party proceeded to Hua Wei Beijing Research & Development Centre in Hi-Tech Industrial Zone, northern part of Beijing, where they were welcomed by Chairman of Hua Wei Technologies Co Ltd Mr Li Shin Lin and officials.
First, the Senior General and party viewed round video communication products displayed at the showroom.
Chairman of Hua Wei Technologies Co Ltd Mr Li Shin Lin briefed the Senior General and party on formation of the company, research and development, human resource development, advanced video communication products and sending them to the world market.
Next, the Senior General and Chairman of Hua Wei Technologies Co Ltd Mr Li Shin Lin exchanged gifts.
Then, the Senior General and party had the documentary photo taken together with Chairman of Hua Wei Technologies Co Ltd Mr Li Shin Lin and party.
Afterwards, Senior General Than Shwe and party arrived back at Diaoyutai State Guest House.
At noon, the Senior General and wife and party arrived at the Myanmar Embassy in Beijing. They were welcomed there by Myanmar Ambassador U Sein Win Aung and wife, Military Attache Col Sein Gyawt and wife, staff and families of the embassy and the military attache's office and Myanmar trainees in PRC.
First, the ambassador and wife, the military attache and wife, and the embassy staff, staff of office of military attache and families paid respects to Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing in accord with the tradition of Buddhism.
Then, Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party had a luncheon together with the embassy families.
Then, Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt met with the embassy staff and staff of the office of military attache and gave instructions on the State Visit to the People's Republic of China by Head of State Senior General Than Shwe with a view to further cementing the existing ties between Myanmar and the PRC and widening the scope of already flourishing cooperation between the two countries, rapid development of the PRC, measures being taken in Myanmar for further development in political, economic and social sectors, attempts made by internal and external destructive elements with every intention of undermining the nation and stressed the need for embassy staff to make efforts for further strengthening the friendship forged between the two countries.
Afterwards, Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing presented gifts to the embassy staff, staff of the office of the military attache and their families.
After that, Secretary-1 General Khin Nyunt presented prizes to the Myanmar trainees who are attending courses in the PRC.
Then, the Myanmar trainees in the PRC paid respects to Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing.
Next, Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party arrived back at the State Guest House.
Senior General Than Shwe's wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing, accompanied by Secretary-1 General Khin Nyunt's wife Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and party arrived at China Women Activity Centre in Beijing on 7 January morning.
They were welcomed there by Vice-Chairperson of the Centre Ms Gu Xiu Lian and officials.
Then, Vice-Chairperson of the Centre Ms Gu Xiu Lian explained matters related to women activities in the PRC, the participation of women in nation-building endeavours, nurturing of the children and the assistance provided by the Government for development of the women sector.
Later, Daw Kyaing Kyaing explained measures being taken for women's affairs in Myanmar.
Then, China Women Activity Centre presented two sets of computer, two printers, two photo copiers, five cassettes, cameras and two accessories, three sets of TV and three VCRs to Myanmar National Committee for Women's Affairs.
Then, Daw Kyaing Kyaing and Ms Gu Xiu Lian exchanged gifts and had the photo taken.
Afterwards, Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party arrived at Women's College of China where they were welcomed by Professor Ms Hui Chunru and officials. Professor Ms Hui Chunru explained the history of the college and its performance.
Then, Daw Kyaing Kyaing and Professor Ms Hui Chunru exchanged gifts and had the photo taken.
In the afternoon, Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party viewed round the Great Hall of the People.

Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Prime Minister Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing arrived at the Great Hall of the People by a motorcade from Diaoyutai State Guest House in Beijing. They were warmly welcomed by President of PRC Mr Jiang Zemin.
Two children presented bouquets to Senior General Than Shwe and Daw Kyaing Kyaing.
President Mr Jiang Zemin introduced Senior General Than Shwe to Vice-Premier Qian Qichen, the ministers, vice-ministers and senior officials.
Senior General Than Shwe also introduced to Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt and members of the delegation President Mr Jiang Zemin.
Senior General Than Shwe and President Mr Jiang Zemin went to the dais and took the salute of the Guard of Honour. Then the State Band played the national anthems of the Union of Myanmar and the People's Republic of China.

At the discussions, the two leaders discussed developments in both countries and cordially exchanged views on mutual interest and regional and international issues.
Senior General Than Shwe said Myanmar delegation came to China to promote Myanmar-China friendship and economic cooperation. He expressed gratitude for China's cooperation in the national development tasks with goodwill. He also expressed his wish to further strengthen such cooperation in the future. Senior General Than Shwe expressed thanks for China's firm stand from Myanmar side regarding international and regional issues and the desire to further develop technology and human resource sector.
In his discussions, President Jiang Zemin praised Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Prime Minister Senior General Than Shwe for Myanmar's continued progress and high living standard of the people under his leadership. He said at the 16th Congress of the Communist Party of China new leaders were elected. The new leaders would continue to strengthen Myanmar-China Paukphaw friendship with tradition and cooperation. Assistance would be provided to Myanmar's development tasks as much as possible. Under the economic and technological cooperation programme, China will provide 50 million yuan to Myanmar and give a special loan of US $ 200 million for the development tasks. China accepts that every nation has the right to choose its development path by itself without outside interference, he added.
After the discussions between the leaders of the two countries, the ceremony to sign the agreement between the Government of the Union of Myanmar and the Government of the People's Republic of China was held at He Bei Hall of the Great Hall of the People.
Also present on the occasion were Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe, Secretary-1 General Khin Nyunt, members of the State Peace and Development Council, the Chairman of Shan State (North) Peace and Development Council Commander of North-East Command, the ministers, the deputy ministers, the Myanmar Ambassador and departmental heads, PRC President Mr Jiang Zemin, Vice Premier Qian Qichen, the ministers, the deputy ministers, the Chinese Ambassador and high-ranking officials.
First, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung and Chinese Minister of Health Mr Zhang Wenkang signed the Agreement on Health Cooperation between the Government of the Union of Myanmar and the Government of the People's Republic of China and exchanged the documents.
Then, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win and Deputy Minister of Trade and Economic Cooperation Mr An Min signed the Agreement on Economic and Technical Cooperation between the Government of the Union of Myanmar and the Government of the People's Republic of China and exchanged the documents.
Next, Deputy Minister for Health Professor Dr Kyaw Myint and Deputy Minister at the General Administration of State Sports of the People's Republic of China Mr Li Zhijian signed the Agreement on Cooperation in the Field of Sports and exchanged the documents.
At 7 pm, PRC President Mr Jiang Zemin hosted a banquet in honour of Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and Myanmar delegation members at the western hall of the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Also present at the banquet were Secretary-1 General Khin Nyunt and wife Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, members of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Ye Myint and Lt-Gen Aung Htwe, Chairman of Shan State (North) Peace and Development Council Commander of North-East Command Maj-Gen Myint Hlaing, the ministers, the Military Assistant to the State Peace and Development Council Chairman, the deputy ministers, the Myanmar Ambassador to China and departmental heads, Deputy Premier of PRC Mr Qian Qichen, National People's Congress Vice-Chairman Mr Xu Jialu, 9th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Vice Chairman Mr Hu Qili, the ministers, the deputy ministers, the Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar and high-ranking officials.
At the banquet, the State Band played the national anthems of the Union of Myanmar and the People's Republic of China.
Then, PRC President Mr Jiang Zemin, Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing together with the guests had the dinner.
After the banquet, the Senior General and wife and party arrived back at Diaoyutai State Guest House.

International Youths Letter Writing Contest held
Yangon, 11 Jan - Under the programme of UPU and UNESCO, jointly organized by Myanma Posts and Telecommunications of the Ministry of Communications, Posts and Telegraphs and National Planning and Training Department of the Ministry of Education, the International Youths (Age 15 & under) Letter Writing Contest hailing the 32nd Anniversary of the World Post Day was held at the designated basic education schools in the whole country this morning. The title of the letter writing was “I am Writing to tell you how we can build a better future”. 76th council meeting of AFA held
Yangon, 11 Jan - The Asean Federation of Accountants (AFA) held its 76th council meeting at the Sedona Hotel on Kaba Aye Pagoada Road here this morning.
Present on the occasion were Chairman of AFA Mr Partoon Taveebhol of Thailand, AFA members from Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore and Laos. AFA Chairman Mr Partoon presided over the meeting and made an opening speech.
Then, minutes of the meeting were approved, points of the minutes discussed, facts on AFA Conference 2003 presented, measures for Cambodia's entry into AFA submitted and financial statement of AFA read. Next, the AFA Chairman, members and candidate members had a documentary photo taken.
Afterwards, the second session of the meeting was held, attended by the Chairman, members, candidate members and observers from Cambodia. Brief reports on latest development of accountancy in AFA member nations and other matters were presented. Dinner was hosted at the Sedona Hotel in honour of the participants of the meeting.

Yangon, 11 Jan - Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Myint Swe visited the sites in respective districts, townships and wards where Tatmadawmen, members of Myanmar Police Force, staff of YCDC, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross Society and Auxiliary Fire Brigade, Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Working Committee for Women's Affairs and people were carrying out sanitation tasks today.
First, the commander and party arrived at the junction of Pyidaungsu Road and Panglong Road in Dagon Myothit (North) Township at 7 am, where they were welcomed by No 2 Military Region Commander Lt-Col Myint Kyi, Secretary Lt-Col Kyaw Tint and members of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council. The commander and party inspected the dredging works at the drain beside Pyidaungsu Road.
After hearing reports of officials, the commander gave necessary instructions. Then, the commander and party proceeded to the junction of Pyidaungsu Road and Industrial Zone-1 Road in Dagon Myothit (South) Township where they viewed round the sanitation work being carried out for the main ditches on either side of the road. Officials reported on arrangements for flowing of water to Ngamoyeik Creek from the streams in the township.
Then, the commander gave necessary instructions. The commander, the vice mayor and party then attended the ceremony to donate sanitation equipment to the basic education schools from 14 townships in Yangon East District. The commander spoke on the occasion and explained the purpose of the donation.
The commander then presented sanitation equipment for the schools to Director-General U Tin Win of No 3 Basic Education Department (Yangon City). District Education Officer Daw Myat Myat Mu spoke words of thanks. The equipment worth over K 8 million was donated by the people of the district.
After that, the commander and party went to the site for extended construction of Bahan roundabout and circular roads on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road in Bahan Township. Vice Mayor Col Maung Pa and Head of Engineering (Road & Bridge) Department of YCDC U Bo Htay reported on earth work and progress of work.
Then, the commander and party proceeded to the site for extension of U Wisara roundabout and circular roads in Dagon Township and inspected the tasks being carried out, planting of flowering plants. The officials there conducted the commander round the site. Later, the commander, the vice mayor and party also saw over extension of circular roads and earth work at Hanthawady roundabout in Kamayut Township. The commander then left necessary instructions.
Minister inspects banks and offices in Pyay
Yangon, 11 Jan - Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein met with the staff of the Ministry of Finance and Revenue in Bago and Magway Divisions at the meeting hall of the Division Peace and Development Council Office yesterday afternoon and fulfilled the requirements.
The minister urged those present to strive for the realization of objectives laid down by the State in accordance with the rules and regulations of respective departments. Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung explained matters related to the banking services. Afterwards, the minister inspected department banks and offices under the ministry and private banks and gave necessary instructions.
National race study group visits museums in Yangon
Yangon, 11 Jan - Under the arrangement of the Work Committee for Progress of Border Areas and National Races, national race study group of Myitta-Taungthonelon region in Dawei Township visited the Defence Services Museum, the 55th Anniversary Independence Day Exhibition, and the National Museum here this morning.
In the evening, they visited the Aquarium and Yangon Zoological Garden.
