Prospects for economic cooperation between Myanmar and Sichuan Province discussed Senior General Than Shwe and party visit industries in Chengdu

Yangon, 13 Jan - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Prime Minister Senior General Than Shwe, wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and delegation members arrived at Beijing Airport on 8 January to leave for Chengdu, Sichuan Province in south-west of the People's Republic of China.

Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Prime Minister Senior General Than Shwe and party were seen off at the airport by staff of Myanmar Embassy and Office of Military Attaché.

Senior General Than Shwe, wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and delegation members, left Beijing Airport by special aircraft of Air China, and arrived at Chengdu International Airport, Sichuan Province at 9 pm.

Senior General Than Shwe, wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and delegation members were welcomed by Vice-Governor of Sichuan Province Mr Huang Xiaoxiang, Secretary General of Sichuan Provincial People's Government Mr Li Hongren, Vice-Mayor of Chengdu Mr Zhang Jungao, senior officials and welcoming party.

Senior General Than Shwe, wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and delegation members went to Jinjiang Hotel in Chengdu and stayed there.

Secretary of CPC Sichuan Province Mr Zhang Xuezhong paid a courtesy call on Senior General Than Shwe at the hotel at 9 am on 9 January.

Prospects for economic cooperation between Myanmar and Sichuan Province, especially in cooperation in hydro-electric power projects and further strengthening of friendship between the two countries were cordially discussed.

Senior General Than Shwe and party, accompanied by Vice-Governor of Sichuan Province Mr Huang Xiaoxiang, Vice-Mayor of Chengdu Mr Zhang Jungao and officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, went to Dong Fang Electrical Machinery Co Ltd in Deyang, a modern industrial city.

Senior General Than Shwe and party were welcomed by welcoming party led by Secretary of CPC in Deyang Mr Li Chengyun, Vice-Mayor Mr Fang Xiaofang, General Manager of Dong Fang Electrical Machinery Co Ltd Mr Zhu Yuanchao, Vice-General Manager Mr Han Zhiqiao and staff.

Mr Li Chengyun reported on establishment of modern industrial city, manufacturing of heavy machinery and parts used in generating of electric power. He also said Deyang became a modern industrial zone of China and the largest base camp in plant tissue culture in Asia and in production of Chinese traditional medicine with the use of modern techniques.

General Manager of Dong Fang Electrical Machinery Co Ltd Mr Zhu Yuanchao reported on history of the factory, organizational set-up of Dong Fang Electrical Machinery Co Ltd, turbines that generate hydro-electric power, steam-powered generators, control equipment, AC and DC electrical goods, cooperation with international communities, products of the factory used in the world and cooperation in Zaungtu hydro-electric power project in Myanmar.

Senior General Than Shwe said he and party came to China to further strengthen the bilateral friendship and to accelerate economic cooperation. Prospects for cooperation are to be discussed after studying the development of economic zones and industrial zones in China, he said. He also said he had discussed matters relating to bilateral economic cooperation with Chinese leaders.

Emphasis has been placed on implementation of electric power projects in the country. Dong Fang Co could undertake the tasks for mutual benefits, he added.

Senior General Than Shwe and party observed manufacturing of heavy machinery used in hydro electric power projects.

Next, Senior General Than Shwe and General Manager Mr Zhu Yuanchao exchanged souvenirs.

In the afternoon, Senior General Than Shwe and party arrived back in Chengdu.

At 6 pm, Governor of Sichuan Province Mr Zheng Zhengwei paid a courtesy call on Senior General Than Shwe at Jinjiang Hotel.

Present were Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt and members, Vice-mayor of Chengdu Mr Tang Chuanping and members.

The Governor of Sichuan Province said the province became successful in industry and agriculture among the western regions of China.

Senior General Than Shwe said companies in Sichuan Province should visit Myanmar for there are a lot of works to be carried out in cooperation with the province.

In the evening, Governor of Sichuan Province Mr Zheng Zhengwei hosted dinner in honour of Senior General Than Shwe, wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and delegation members at Jinjiang Hotel.

Myanmar delegation spent the night at the hotel.

Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party, went to rare Panda Breeding and Research Camp near Chengdu on 9 January morning. The camp in-charge welcomed them.

Then, Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party viewed pandas at the camp. Next, Daw Kyaing Kyaing and in-charge of the camp Ms Wang Wei exchanged souvenirs and had the documentary photo taken.

Then, Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party arrived at San Xing Dui Museum on Guanghan, 40 kilometres far from Chengdu where they were welcomed by Guanghan City Mayor Mrs Jiang Jianjun.

At the museum, Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party viewed ancient cultural bronze and earthen wares. Then, Daw Kyaing Kyaing and Mayor Mrs Jiang Jianjun exchanged souvenirs and had a group photo taken.

On 10 January, Senior General Than Shwe and party went to Diao Pharmaceutical Group Co in Chengdu Hi-Tech Development Zone where they were welcomed by Vice-President Mr Huang Youcheng and officials.

First, Vice-President Mr Huang Youcheng explained organizational set-up of the company, research works, manufacturing of Chinese traditional medicine with the use of modern method, kinds of traditional medicines and advantages with the use of charts and sample medicines.

Then, the Senior General and party observed production process of traditional medicines at the factory. Next, the Senior General and the Vice-President exchanged souvenirs.

The Senior General and party proceeded to Chengdu GoldTel Communication Co Ltd where they were welcomed by Executive President Mr Mo Xiaoyu and officials. The Executive President then explained Payphone Management System, Outdoor Payphone, Indoor Payphone, Wireless IC Card Payphone and IC Card Products Series. Officials reported that the company will accept to give training to Myanmar scholars.

Next, the Senior General and party and the Executive President exchanged souvenirs. Then, the Senior General and party arrived back at the hotel in Chengdu in the morning.

They then arrived at Chengdu International Airport on 10 January morning to leave for Kunming, Yunnan Province. The Senior General and party were seen off at the airport by Vice-Governor Sichuan Province Mr Huang Xiaoxiang, Secretary-General Mr Li Hongren of the People's Government of Sichuan Province, Vice-Mayor Mr Zhang Jungao of Chengdu City and senior officials.

On 9 January afternoon, the President of Chendu Chemical Engineering Corporation and party called on Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, who accompanied the Senior General, at Jinjiang Hotel in Chengdu, and discussed drawing of the design for Yeni Paper Mill. Similarly, the President of Honghe Chemical (Group) Ltd and party called on the minister. They discussed production of caustic soda and soda ash. Likewise, the minister discussed matters related to tasks of Thayet Cement Plant with the vice-president of Jingsu Pengjei Industrial & Stocks Co Ltd.

On 9 January, Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin met with agriculturists of Yinbin Agricultural Research Institute at the hall of Jinjiang Hotel in Chengdu and discussed technological cooperation in highland cultivation and production of quality seeds for cultivating high yield crops.

On 10 January, Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut met with President Mr Yao Yuning of Sichuan Machinery and Equipment Import and Export Corporation at the hall of Jinjiang Hotel in Chengdu.

They discussed installation of power line for Shweli Project, implementation of Yeywa Hydel Power Plant Project and feasibility study for Chindwin Basin Hydel Power Project.

Yangon, 13 Jan - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) Vice-Senior General Maung Aye received Ambassador of India to the Union of Myanmar Mr Rajiv Kumar Bhatia at Zeyathiri Beikman on Konmyinttha at 4.30 pm today.

Yangon, 13 Jan - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung received Manager of Rieckermann Machinery Industrial Equipment Mr Derek J Benke and Division Manager of Rieckermann (Thailand) Co Ltd, and President Mr Hashi Moto Yoshihide of Dojima Baguju Co Ltd, Japan, and party at his office at 10 am and 10.30 am respectively.


Workshop on people's participation in community forestry opens

Yangon, 13 Jan - Workshop on people's participation in community forestry and extension, jointly organized by the Forest Department of the Ministry of Forestry and Japan International Cooperation Agency, Was held this morning at the International Business Centre here.

The workshop will last two days during which three papers on people's participation in forestry and forest affairs will be submitted. Director General of the Forestry Department U Shwe Kyaw and Counselor of Japanese Embassy Mr Rokuichiro Michii made an opening address.

Construction tasks in Rakhine State, Magway Division inspected

Yangon, 13 Jan - Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, inspected earth works and construction tasks for MaI-Padekyaw-An road section on 11 January and gave instructions to the officials.

Afterwards, the minister and party inspected construction of ring road in An. Yesterday morning, the minister heard the reports by Magway Division Superintending Engineer U Tint Lwin and Road Construction Special Group-1 Chief Engineer U Ba Saw on earthen works between Mann Creek and Mone Creek on Pathein-Monywa road and collection of gravel.

The minister and party inspected construction of piers of Chaungson Bridge and gave instructions. Then, the minister arrived at the chosen site for construction of Mone Creek Bridge where Superintending Engineer U Tint Lwin and Chief Engineer U Ba Saw reported on arrangements for construction tasks. The minister gave instructions and left there.

Minister inspects construction of Ponnyataung Tunnel

Yangon, 13 Jan - Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, inspected gravel work being carried out at the work site at the eastern part of Ponnyataung Tunnel on 8 January morning.

Then, the minister and party inspected the work site at the western part of the tunnel. On 9 January morning, the minister gave instructions on maintenance of Pakkoku-Kyaw railway section. Next, the minister and party inspected the sites chosen for construction of retaining wall and embankment. The minister and party on 10 January inspected the earth work at the construction site at the entrance to the tunnel and gave instructions on timely completion of the project and meeting the set standard.

Then, the minister viewed the axis. Afterwards, the minister inspected the gravel work, the earth work and dredging of drains and gave instructions. On 11 January, the minister inspected the earth work and the site chosen for construction of the bridge at the construction site of Kyeni-Chauk Railroad.

Myanmar-Japan Friendship Association holds special meeting

Yangon, 13 Jan - The Myanmar-Japan Friendship Association held the special meeting at Ottara Hall of Karaweik Palace at Kandawgyi Lake this morning.

Chairman of the Association Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing gave a speech. Then, Vice-Chairman of the association Chairman of the Committee for Electing Executives U Khin Shwe explained the election system.. Then, the chairman announced to approve the lists of EC and CEC.

The Myanmar-Japan Friendship Association was formed with 15 executives and 31 CEC members including Chairman Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Vice-Chairmen Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, Dr Daw May May Yi, U Khin Shwe and Dr Daw Mya Mya Win, General-Secretary U Ye Htut, Joint- Secretaries U Maung Win and U Kyi Lwin and Treasurer U Kyaw Paing.

Latter, the chairman gave concluding remarks.


Physical contest for inter-pre-primary & day nursery school held

Yangon, 13 Jan - The Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement held the physical contest for inter-pre-primary & day nursery school in Yangon Division at the Aungsan Stadium this morning.

Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa formally opened the contest.

After the contest, Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and wife Daw Khin Aye, Deputy Minister U Hlaing Win and departmental heads presented prizes to the respective winners.


Military Band Contest goes on

Yangon, 13 Jan - The 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commemorative 12th Military Band Contest continued at the People's Square for the third day today.

 Before the contest, bands comprising students of Sangyoung BEHS No-2 and Tamway BEHS No-2 presented their skill demonstration.

Next, bands representing the Northern Command, Western Command, Coastal Region Command, Southern Command, No 33 Light Infantry Division and North-West Command took part in the competition. Member of the committee for holding the competition Deputy Adjutant-General Col Khin Soe presented cash awards to the demonstrated bands.


Minister inspect development tasks in Taninthayi Division

Yangon, 13 Jan - Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen Thein Zaw and Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, inspected construction of Victoria Resort Club on Yadana Island in Kawthoung Township, Taninthayi Division on 10 January.

Then, the ministers and party proceeded to Salon Is- land where they inspected breeding of dolphins being under taken by Shambhala Co. They then inspected Andaman Club Hotel on Thahtay Island.

Next, the ministers and party inspected the post office and auto-telephone exchange of Myanma Posts and Telecomrnunications, and the telegraph and ground satellite station in Kawthoung. In the afternoon, Minister Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein met with the livestock and fisheries entrepreneurs and departmental official sunder the Ministry of Live-stock and Fisheries at Kawthoung District Fisheries Department and gave instructions ,on development of fisheries sector .

Next, USDA CEC member Brig- Gen Maung Maung Thein met with the district and township USDAs executives at Kawthoung District USDA Office and gave instructions on regional development.



First level course for staff opens

Yangon, 13 Jan - First level course No 190 for staff was opened at the training school of the Auditor-General's Office here this morning.

A total of 150 trainees are attending the two and half month course. The opening ceremony was attended by Auditor-General Maj-Gen Tin Aye, officials and trainees.


Universities' Winter Mountaineering team scales Mount Victoria

Yangon, 13 Jan - The Universities' Winter Mountaineering team led by the Chairman of Yangon University Hiking and Mountaineering Association started the mountaineering trip in southern Chin State in honour of 55th Anniversary Independence Day on 26 December.

The team climbed the 10,500 feet high Mount Victoria (Khonuthum) in Mind at District on 1 January 2003 and the 8,489 feet high Mount Lonhtain in Matupi Township on 4 January, On 5 January, they successfully climbed Mount Bontala where the Lemyo River originates through a water fall and hoisted the State Flag on it. During the mountaineering trip, members of the team donated study guide books to Basic Education High Schools in Mindat. Kanpatlet and Matupl townships various kinds of books to libraries, cash towards the funds of the pagoda atop Mount Victoria and Parahita Gehas and BEPSs, for the repairs of suspension bridges across Chi Creek in Mashwiywa and Yophaung village-tracts, construction for Matupi Knowledge Bank Library and clothes to villages in farflung areas.

On their return, the team members also scaled Mount Popa, 4,981 feet high, in Kyaukpadaung Township and arrived back hereon 11 January.


74 KNPP armed group members exchange arms for peace in Pasawng

Yangon, 13 Jan - The State Peace and Development Council, upholding Our Three Main National Causes, laid down 12 Objectives and is striving for national reconsolidation for emergence of a peaceful, modern and developed nation with genuine goodwill.

Understanding goodwill and correct endeavours of the government, remnant armed group members, abandoning their destructive acts which did not benefit the people at all and made their region retard development, have been continuously exchanging arms for peace individually or in groups.

The 74-member armed group led by Mawchi Region Central Committee member U Saw Law Sha of KNPP armed group exchanged arms for peace at the sports grounds in Pasawng Township, Kayah State, on 9 January. At the ceremony, Chairman of Kayah State Peace and Development Council Col Thein Swe made a speech.

He said that the State warmly welcomed the armed group members and urged them to join hands with local people in striving for development of the region. Then, U Saw Law Sha explained the purpose of exchanging arms for peace. He said they will take part in the regional development work joining hands with the Government and local people.

Next, U Saw Law Sha handed over the list of the armed group members and weapons to Col Thein Swe. Altogether 74 members led by Mawchi Region Central Committee member U Saw Law Sha of KNPP armed group, bringing together with 22 assorted weapons, 19 magazines, 314 rounds of ammunition and two RPG shells, exchanged arms for peace at Regional Control Command (Loikaw) on 9 January 2003.

Afterwards, cash and kind were donated to those who had exchanged arms for peace. Officials of the group accepted K 500,000 each donated by Regional Control Command (Loikaw) through Col Thein Swe; and Kayah State Peace and Development Council through Police Col Nyo Win, K 835,000 by Ministry of Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs; and 10 bags of rice, blankets, clothes, textiles and household and personal goods by Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement.


After the ceremony, Col Thein Swe hosted lunch to U Saw Law Sha and party. More persons of armed groups are going to exchange arms for peace.

Stakes driven for construction of Muniramarunay Pagoda

Yangon, 13 Jan - Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West Command Maj-Gen Htay 00 and Minister for Progress of Border Areas and Nationa1Races and Development Affairs Col  Thein Nyunt attended the stake-driving ceremony for construction of Muniramarunay MyoU Pawdawmu Pagoda in Maubin yesterday morning.

At the ceremony, the commander and minister presented offertories to the Sayadaws. Then, they drove stakes and sprinkled scented water on them. Then, a cash donation ceremony followed.

Col Thein Nyunt and the commander presented cash donated by PBANRDA Ministry and K 500,000 by the Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council respectively.Next. 180 wellwishers presented cash totalling K 12,475,000.


Drug

Drug possessor jailed

Yangon, 13 Jan - Acting on a tip-off, a combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Tachilek Anti-drug Squad, searched Daw San Nyu in Lwesitone Village, Hongleik village-tract, Tachilek, on 1 September 2002 and apprehended her together with 0.8 kilo of raw opium.

In connection with the case, Tachilek Police Station opened the case against Daw San Nyu, 57, daughter of U Chaw Hla, under Section 15/19(A) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. Tachilek District Court sentenced her to 5 years' imprisonment under Section 15 and 15 years' imprisonment under Section 19 (A) separately on 6 December 2002.
