Myanmar, China seek means to enhance Yunnan Province's participation in two countries' economic cooperation, discuss border areas development and anti-narcotics drive
Senior General Than Shwe, Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party visit Kunming

Yangon, 14 Jan - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Prime Minister of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party arrived at Kunming International Airport in Yunnan Province, from Chengdu, Sichuan Province, at noon on 10 January by special flight.

They were accompanied by Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Myanmar Mr Li Jinjun and wife, officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of PRC, Ambassador of Myanmar to PRC U Sein Win Aung and wife, and Military Attaché Col Sein Gyawt.

On arrival at the airport, the Senior General and party were welcomed by Vice-Governor of Yunnan Pro-vince Mr Shao Qiwei, Kunming Mayor Mr Jin Jinguo, senior officers, Consul-General U Thein Zaw of Myanmar Consulate in Kunming and wife, and staff and families.

Accompanied by Vice-Governor Mr Shao Qiwei, Mayor Mr Jin Jinguo and officials, the Senior General and party arrived at Kunming Steel and Iron Group Ltd (KSIG), and were welcomed by Chairman of the Board of Directors of KSIG Mr Hao Shudong and officials.

Mr Hao Shudong explained the background history of the steel plant, increase in annual production capacity and income, type of products, and the company's wish to extend cooperation with Myanmar.

Senior General Than Shwe and Mr Hao Shudong exchanged gifts.

Party Secretary of Yunnan Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China Mr Bai Enpei and Governor of the Province Mr Xu Rongkai paid a courtesy call on Senior General Than Shwe at Kai Wha Plaza International Hotel in Kunming at 6.30 pm.

The two sides discussed participation of Yunnan Province, that is sharing a long border with Myanmar, towards Myanmar-China economic cooperation and sought means to further enhance the cooperation, the attention being given to achieving peace and stability, systematic administrative system and rapid progress in the common border areas and launching anti-narcotics drive.

Governor Mr Xu Rongkai hosted dinner in honour of Senior General Than Shwe and Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party at the hotel.

At the Kunming International Trade Centre, the Senior General and party enjoyed the traditional dances of the ethnic peoples of the PRC.

Daw Kyaing Kyaing and Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, wife of the Secretary-1, and party visited Yunnan Province First People's Hospital in Kunming on 10 January afternoon.

They were welcomed by Chairman of the Yunnan Province Health Bureau Prof Juemin Chen and Chairman of the hospital Prof Lan Bing Yan. They then studied acupuncture and the Special Cardiac Ward.

On arrival at Yunnan folk village, Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party were greeted with traditional dances. They watched the village life of the folk peoples of the PRC. At ethnic Pe village, they paid obeisance to a Buddha image and enjoyed the Pe traditional dance.

The next morning, Senior General Than Shwe and Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party, accompanied by Vice-Governor Mr Shao Qiwei, visited World Horti-Expo Garden in Kunming. They were welcomed by Chairman of World Horti-Expo Garden Co Ltd Mr Wang Jing and officials. They viewed the clock decorated with flowers, the flower garden, the flower road and the flower boat. They also went around the expo by car, and visited the Green House and forest exhibition. They then planted an Orthmantus in the east of the Green House.

Afterwards, the Senior General and party viewed the country-wise exhibits including the Myanmar booth, stone garden and province-wise booths of the PRC by mini cars.

After going around Kunming and viewing its developments, they went back to Kai Wha Plaza International Hotel where they were staying.

At 3.30 pm, Senior General Than Shwe and Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party arrived at Kunming International Airport to leave for Yangon. They were seen off at the airport by Vice-Governor Mr Shao Qiwei, Mayor Mr Jin Jinguo, senior officers, Ambassador U Sein Win Aung and wife, Military Attaché Col Sein Gyawt, Consul General U Thein Zaw and wife, staff and families.

Senior General Than Shwe and Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party arrived back here in the evening.

Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe paid a State Visit to the People's Republic of China from 6 to 11 January.

Senior General Than Shwe met President Jiang Zemin and held discussions. Senior General Than Shwe, Vice- President Hu Jintao, Premier Zhu Rongji and Chairman of National People's Congress of the People's Republic of China Mr Li Peng exchanged views on mutual interest. The discussions were held in an atmosphere of friendship, understanding and spirit of cooperation.

Senior General Than Shwe explained Myanmar's policies, tasks and developments. Chinese leaders praised Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Prime Minister Senior General Than Shwe for Myanmar's continued progress and high living standard of the people under his leadership. He said at the 16th Congress of the Communist Party of China new leaders were elected. The new leaders would continue to strengthen friendship and cooperation with Myanmar. Assistance would be provided to Myanmar's national development tasks as much as possible. They also expressed the desire to promote bilateral cooperation in international and regional issues.

During his visit, the Agreement on Economic and Technical Cooperation between Myanmar and the PRC was signed. Under the agreement, China will provide 50 million yuan to Myanmar and the Agreements on Cooperation in Health and in the Field of Sports were also signed. At the discussions, President Jiang Zemin said China would loan US $ 200 million to Myanmar at low interest rate for the development tasks. It is the largest loan in the history of Myanmar-China relations.

During his State Visit, Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt met State Councillor of the PRC Mr Luo Gan and discussed matters relating to Myanmar-China border development and cooperation in combating narcotic drugs. The ministers of Myanmar delegation, officials of the Chinese government and economic entrepreneurs discussed economic cooperation.

Senior General Than Shwe and party visited industries and economic zones in China. Senior General Than Shwe's State Visit to China deepened the traditional Myanmar-China Paukphaw friendship and opened a new chapter in bilateral economic cooperation.

Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, who accompanied Senior General Than Shwe, met President Mr Feng Ke of Yunnan Machinery and Equipment I & E Cooperation in Kunming on 10 January and discussed matters relating to Thayet Cement Plant, Enamelware Factory, construction of personal goods factory and steel ball factory. Minister U Aung Thaung discussed production of cigarettes and alcohol and matters relating to Loi Hein Co with General Manager Mr Xin Yun Zhong of Kunming Da Dian Industries (Group). He also discussed matters relating to caustic soda factory in Sittoung with Vice-President and Manager Mr Gao Chong Kuan of Kunming Electrochemical Plant, maize oil and maize powder factory with President and General Manager Mr Wong King Wah of Wai Hung Machineries and Trading Ltd, Enamelware factory in Kyaukse and study tour on enamelware in China with Vice-General Manager Mr Liu Yuan Li of Liu Zhon Liu Guan Co Ltd.

Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin discussed establishment of diesel engine factory with President Mr Carol Augeng of Saco Group in Kunming and Vice-President Mr Gong Kai and party of XJ International Engineering Corporation on 11 January.

Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin discussed production of value-added product from wa-u (tuber), cultivation of wa-u, production of compound fertilizer, production of neem pesticide and penetrating market with the President of China Yunnan Corporation and party in Kunming on 10 January.

The minister also discussed renovation of sugar mills, growing of quality sugarcane, cultivation and construction of purified edible oil factory with the President of China National Complete Plant Import and Export.

Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi discussed exploration of oil and natural gas in inland Myanmar with President Mr Lei Wenth of Southern Exploration and Production Co at Kai Wah Hotel on 11 January.

Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut met Vice-Governor of Yunnan Province Mr Shao Qi Wei and discussed cooperation in construction of Paunglaung and Shweli hydro electric power projects and other projects to be implemented at Kai Wah Hotel on 10 January.

On 11 January, Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut met President of YMEC Co Mr Lin Zayou and discussed completion of Paunglaung and Shweli hydro electric power projects being undertaken by YMEC Co in time in accord with the set standard.

Yangon, 14 Jan - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Military Intelligence General Khin Nyunt received Mr David Rockefeller and party of the United States of America at Zeyarthiri Beikman on Konmyinttha here at 8.30 am today.


Vice Premier of State Council of PRC and party arrive

Yangon, 14 Jan - At the invitation of the Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar General Khin Nyunt, the Vice Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, Mr Li Lanqing accompanied by wife Madam Zhang Suzhen arrived at Yangon International Airport this afternoon on an official visit to the Union of Myanmar.

The Vice Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China Mr Li Lanqing and party were welcomed at Yangon international airport by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt and wife Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, and officials of the Embassy.

The Vice Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China was accompanied by Minister of Education Ms Chen Zhili, Minister of Science and Technology Mr Xu Guanhua, Deputy Secretary-General of the State Council Mr Gao Qing, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr Wang Yi, Vice Minister of State Development Planning Commission Mr Yu Guangzhou, Vice Minister of the Office of State Science, Technology and Education Leading Group Mr Liao Xiaoqi and high -ranking officials of the Government of the People's Republic of China.


Health Minister receives foreign guests

Yangon, 14 Jan - Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein received Ex-Ambassador of Israel to Myanmar Mr Modechai Karni and Vice Executive Director Dr Kathleen Cravero of UNAIDS, Geneva, Switzerland, at his office at 10 am and at 1 pm today respectively.

Roads and bridges inspected

Yangon, 14 Jan - Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun yesterday morning inspected upgrading of Pathein-Monywa highway, construction of Shwechaung Bridge which will be 500 feet long and bear 60-ton loads, bailey bridges on Pathein-Monywa highway and the workshop in Pyintha.


Commander, Minister inspect extension of Hanthawady roundabout

Yangon, 14 Jan - Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Myint Swe and Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Thein Zaw this morning inspected the demolition of buildings in the compound of Sarpay Beikman Press, where the buildings of the Ministry of CPT are to be built. The commander and the minister then inspected the Hanthawady Auto Exchange being pulled down and the Hanthawady roundabout and roads being extended.


Commander inspects extension of Strand Road

Yangon, 14 Jan - Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Myint Swe and Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, inspected the extension of Strand Road into a six-lane one here this morning.

First, the commander and party arrived at the junction of Sule Pagoda Road and Strand Road. Responsible officials reported to the commander and party on tasks to be carried out for the extension of Ywathitchaung-Yazadirit road section of Strand Road into a six-lane one, including laying of concrete on junctions of railways and motor roads, paving of platforms and Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Commander of No 4 Military Region Brig-Gen Myo Myint and Managing Director of Myanma Port Authority U Thein Htay on tasks to be carried out for the completion of road extension works as soon as possible, on tasks to assist the road extension works, and on beautifying tasks for the walls and godowns of MPA.

Then, the commander and party inspected round the preparations for road extension tasks. Afterwards, the commander gave instructions on coordination of departmental personnel in the road extension works being implemented as part of upgrading the city.


Ministers inspect developments in Taninthayi Division

Yangon, 14 Jan - Minister for Hotel and Tourism Brig- Gen Thein Zaw and Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein accompanied by officials concerned on 12 January inspected Phela Island, Ngaman Island, Waahle Island and Lanpe Island in Kawthaung and Bokpyin Townships in Taninthayi Division by boat and looked into the development of world tourism services. The ministers and party arrived at Myanma Gems Enterprise in Pale Island in Bokpyin Township and inspected breeding and production of pearls there.

The ministers and party arrived at l00-ton cold storage and 25-ton ice factory Panlon station and inspected production of prawns to be exported. They inspected production of fish and crab under cage- system of Pyi Phyo Tun Co Ltd and Ahsong Kaung Co Ltd in Kyunsu Township on 13 January. Then, they arrived Myeik Township and inspected Posts offices, Auto telephone Exchange and Digital Micro Wave station. Next, they inspected branch office of Myanma Hotel and Tourism Service in Myeik Township.


National Immunization Days observed in Mon State

Yangon, 14 Jan - The eighth Second-time National Immunization Days was observed at the office of the supervisory committee Mon State Maternal and Child Welfare Association in Mawlamyine on 12 January morning.

Deputy Head of Mon State Health Department Dr Min Nwe Soe explained the launching of the NID. Chairman of Mon State Peace and Development Council Commander of South-East Command Maj-Gen Thura Myint Aung and Patron of state MCWA supervisory committee the commander's wife Daw Than Than Nwe formally opened the ceremony.

Next, the commander and party gave OPVs to children under 5 at the designated places. In Mon State 324,205 children were given OPVs and 300,292 vitamin-A.


Sub-committee for observance of MICT Week-2003 coordinated

Yangon, 14 Jan - The sub-committee for observance of MICT Week-2003 met at the meeting hall of MICT Park here this afternoon.

The MICT Week-2003 is organized by the e-National Task Force and will be held in Hline Township from 21 to 27 January. Chairman Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein made an opening speech on the occasion. Then, Secretary U Tin Win Aung and members of the Sub-committee reported on implementation of the decisions made at the second meeting of the Sub-committee, completion of the tasks and general matters. The meeting came to a close with closing remarks by the chairman.


Warning against reckless drivers

Yangon, 14 Jan - Passengers and pedestrians were often injured in car accidents and even lost their lives because of the reckless drivers who violate the traffic rules. Traffic Rules Enforcement Supervisory Committee has announced that the offenders who run the yellow and red lights will be fined and their driving licenses revoked.


Respects paid to faculty members of YU Law Department

Yangon, 14 Jan - A ceremony to pay respects to facu1ty members of Law Department of Yangon University by old students who pursued education from 1982 to 1988;.91 was held in conjunction with a gettogether at the Diamond Jubilee Hall on Pyay Road here at 9 am on 12 January. Present on the occasion were Supreme Court Judge Dr Tin Aung Aye, Professor Daw Than Nwe of Law Department, retired and present faculty members and old students. Dr Tin Aung Aye delivered an address at the ceremony.

Tube-well opens in Thazi

In memory of late U Yay-Daw Aye Kywe, U Kyaw Maung-Daw Win and family of Tamagon Ward in Mandalay presented a tube-well at Thebok Village in Thazi Township on 18 December morning. The tube-well, dug by the Township Development Affairs Department, is 320 feet in depth and can pump out 1,500 gallons of water per hour.

Moesanpan Library opens in Ngaphe

Under the patronage of Ngaphe Township Information and Public Relations Department in Magway Division, Moesanpan self-reliance library was opened at Nezaw Village on 3 January. Township Peace and Development Council Chairman U Kyaw Kyaw Maung and Township Police Force U Chit Swe formally opened the tube-well.

Cash presented for renovation of religious building

The members of Phyu Township Rice Millers Association presented K 50,000 for renovation of Sasana Beikman religious building in Phyu on 3 January. After Township Peace and Development Council Chairman U Maung Maung Khin had made a speech, Rice Millers Association Chairman U Tint Aung explained the purposes of the donation and presented K 50,000 to Chairman U Aung Khin.

Educative talks held in Pekhon

The Border Area Development Association organized the educative talks on drug elimination tasks, agriculture and livestock breeding tasks which were held at Pekhon from 17 to 19 December. Rector (Retd) Dr U Saw Pa Le Saw and Surgeon Aung Khin led the group of experts and presented medicine worth K 700,000 and piglets worth K 300,000 to the dispensary of Shwepyiaye Youth Training Department in Pekhon.

Construction of Daungmyu Creek Bridge completed in Kawlin

With the aim for development of rural areas, the Daungmyu creek-crossing bridge was constructed between Kawlin and Kanbalu townships. The bridge was constructed by officials of township level departments and township Development Affairs Departments and volunteers. The construction tasks have already been completed cent per cent.

The bridge was built across the Daungmyu creek between Kawlin and Kanbalu townships and is 100 feet in length, 15 feet in width and 27 feet in height. The bridge was constructed at a cost of K 9 million K 6.5 million contributed by U Tin Oo Gyi and wellwishers of Koehtaungbo Village and 2.5 million contributed by wellwishers from 23 villages. The bridge will be opened soon.

Stone plaque for Mingala Market Dhammayon unveiled

Yangon,14 Jan - A ceremony to unveil the stone plaque for Mingala Market Dhammayon, donated by the people of the market to Yangon Division Sangha Nayaka Committee, was held at the Dhammayon in the Compound of YDSNC in Gyatawya Street, Bahan Township, Yangon West District, this morning.

Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Myint Swe formally unveiled the stone plaque.

Then. commander Maj-Gen Myint Swe sprinkled the stone plaque with scented water and unveiled it. The commander and officials offered provislons to the Sayadaw and members of the Sangha. Later , Bhaddarita Kumara delivered a sermon, which brought the ceremony to an end.

Host Shan State (South) starts with 1-0 win over Kachin State in ISD soccer opener

Yangon, 14 Jan - It was only five minutes from the start when Shan State (South) team scored the winning goal against Kachin State in the opener of 48th inter-State/Division seniors soccer championship this evening in Taunggyi.

Zaw Pyi Nyein of the host team never missed the chance when he kicked the ball, which was bounced back towards him after hitting the goalkeeper, into the net.

Shan State (South) got a corner kick at the fifth minute of the game. Zaw Win Latt kicked the corner, and forward Kyaw Su Htwe tried to score with a header. But the ball hit the goalkeeper and bounced back to Zaw Pyi Nyein who scored the lone goal of the match. The attack made by Shan State (South) to dominate the game in the first half did not produce any more goals. Based on eight veteran players and youths, the host team underwent training with the financial assistance of Kanbawza Bank Ltd (KBZ).

But as for Kachin State team, it got only three days to prepare for the games, and it is formed with youth players only. The player of the game, Zaw Pyi Nyein, received K 30,000 Ñ K 25,000 given by KBZ and K 5,000 by the committee to host the game. Bago Division will meet Kayah State tomorrow at the same venue.
