State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe receives Vice Premier of State Council of the People's Republic of China Mr Li Lanqing
Yangon, 15 Jan - Chairman of State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe received Vice Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China Mr Li Lanqing and party at Credentials Hall of Pyithu Hluttaw Building at 10 am today.
At the meeting, matters related to further strengthening of economic cooperation and promotion of friendship between the two countries were discussed.
Myanmar and PRC sign MoUs, agreement
Yangon, 15 Jan - The signing ceremony of memoranda of understanding and an agreement between the Union of Myanmar and the People's Republic of China was held at Zeyathiri Beikman Hall on Konmyinttha here on 14 January evening.
Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win and Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Wang Yi formally signed the agreement on partial debt relief for Myanmar, the MoU on extending a grant for the supply of cultural, educational and sporting goods by the PRC to Myanmar and the MoU on the programme of aerospace and maritime courses by the PRC to Myanmar.
Then, the ceremony came to a close.
Armed Forces Day Commemorative TV Quiz contest held
Yangon, 15 Jan - The 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commemorative Basic Education Level TV Quiz competition was held at the Studio-A of Myanmar Radio and Television on Pyay Road here this morning.
The competition was held in accord with the objectives of the 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day and 17 basic education students took part in it. In the contest Ma May Myo Swe of BEHS No 1 in Bago stood first, Maung Pyi Sone Win Han of BEHS No1 in Hinthada second and Ma Po Dali Mon of BEHS No 3 in Pyay third and special awards went to other students.
First, second and third prizes winners will be presented prizes at the 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day prize presentation ceremony.

Secretary-1 attends third meeting of Central Committee for Launching of MICT Week 2003
Yangon, 15 Jan - The Central Committee for Launching of MICT Week 2003 held its third meeting at Myanmar Information and Communication Technology Park in Hline Township this evening, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Computer Science Development Council Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt.
Chairman of the Central Committee for Launching of MICT Week 2003 Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Thein Zaw reported on formation of the central committee and sub-committees and implementation of the tasks.
Secretary of the Central Committee Joint Secretary of e-National Task Force U Pyone Maung Maung reported on arrangements for launching of MICT Week 2003 with the use of special effects.

The Secretary-1 delivered a speech. He said MICT Park was established in Myanmar for one year. Arrangements are being made for launching of MICT Week to mark the first anniversary of the park. Nowadays, information communication technology has developed in the world with greater momentum. He spoke of the need to develop ICT in Myanmar. Therefore, MICT Park, an infrastructure for ICT was established in conformity with time, he said.
The nations of the world are making efforts for development of ICT competitively and Myanmar has to strive for achieving such development linking networks of international communities, he said. Continuing, he said, Myanmar will gain advice, experience and technology by promoting communications on technology. He spoke of the need for the students of today to make arrangement to be familiar with ICT and to pursue this field for the development of ICT in future.
The objectives of the establishment of MICT include development of ICT in conformity with the time, wide learning of ICT among youths and ICT cooperation with international communities, he said. The Secretary-1 called for cooperation for realization of the above-mentioned objectives in MICT Week activities.
The Secretary-1 then inspected three units of three-storey production block in MICT Compound, preparations for launching of MICT Week 2003 and Bagan Teleport and gave instructions.

Secretary-1 General Khin Nyunt discusses with PRC Vice Premier Mr Li Lanqing
Yangon, 15 Jan - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt had discussions with Vice Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China Mr Li Lanqing and party at Zeyathiri Beikman Hall on Konmyinttha yesterday evening.
At the meeting, Secretary-1 General Khin Nyunt said the visit of the Chinese Vice Premier to Myanmar, only days after Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe's State Visit to the People's Republic of China, highlighted the depth of paukphaw friendship between Myanmar and China. The relationship between the two countries is satisfactorily improving, and mutual economic cooperation was broadly discussed during the State Visit of the Senior General. The Secretary 1- said Myanmar owes the People's Republic of China a debt of gratitude for her decision to offer assistance to development activities in Myanmar.
In accordance with the agreements signed by both countries, Myanmar will take rapid measures to implement the development activities.
During the Chinese Vice Premier's stay in Myanmar, writing off certain amount of debt Myanmar will have to pay to China, providing assistance in educational and cultural sectors as well as sports gear, and offering training necessary for aerospace and maritime universities shed lights on China's goodwill towards Myanmar. Myanmar expressed her desire to further cooperate with China in all sectors.
Then, the Chinese Vice Premier also said that the visit of his delegation is to promote Myanma-China friendship, cooperation and exchange views on mutual interests. He came to Myanmar soon after Senior General Than Shwe's visit to China for speedy implementation of bilateral economic cooperation and for assisting Myanmar as discussed by Senior General Than Shwe and Chinese leaders. China wishes to enhance economic and trade cooperation with Myanmar. The previous year saw 30 percent increase in trade, but there lie still more prospects in that sector. China would like to purchase commodities of Myanmar and takes interest in the fields of hydroelectric power, oil and natural gas. China will also cooperate with Myanmar in science and technology, education, health, culture and sports, and will also make efforts to implement the agreements signed as early as possible by holding coordination meetings.
Secretary-1 and wife host dinner in honour of Vice Premier of State Council of PRC and party
Yangon, 15 Jan - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar General Khin Nyunt and wife Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe hosted a dinner in honour of Vice Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China Mr Li Lanqing, wife Madam Zhang Suzhen and party at Zayyathiri Beikman on Konmyinttha at 8 pm yesterday.

Yangon, 15 Jan - Vice Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China Mr Li Lanqing and wife Madam Zhang Suzhen, currently on a visit to Myanmar at the invitation of Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt, visited the Shwedagon Pagoda at 9 am today.
They went round the pagoda clockwise, paid obeisance to the Jade Buddha Image at the South-West corner of the pagoda and studied the Bell of King Thayawady. The guests then offered flowers and candles to the Image of Kakusanda Buddha. Afterwards, the Vice Premier signed in the visitors' book and donated cash to the pagoda funds.
Members of pagoda board of trustees presented the books on the history of the Shwedagon Htidaw and architecture to the guests.
At 11 am, Vice Premier Mr Li Lanqing, together with Minister for Education U Than Aung, Director-General Thura U Aung Htet of the Protocol Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar Mr Li Jinjun, proceeded to the National Museum, where they were welcomed by Director-General U Myint Thein Swe and officials of the Department of Cultural Institute under the Ministry of Culture.
There, Director of the National Museum Daw Nu Mra Zan explained the history of Thihathana Throne to the guests. The curator and officials also conducted them round the booths in the museum.
Then, the Vice Premier signed in the visitors' book of the National Museum and Director-General U Myint Thein Swe presented a souvenir to him.
At 3 pm, Vice Premier Mr Li Lanqing and party arrived at MICT Park in Hlaing Township, where Chairman of the e-National Task Force Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Thein Zaw and officials welcomed them.
At the main hall of the Park, Chairman of Myanma Information and Communication Technology Development Co Ltd Brig-Gen Thein Swe briefed the guests on investments in development of communication technology, assistance rendered by the government, pilot projects being carried out, programmes of MICT Week-2003 scheduled to take place on 21 January 2003 and opportunities for cooperation between two countries to develop the information technology.
Then, Brig-Gen Thein Zaw presented a souvenir to Mr Li Lanqing. Afterwards, the Vice Premier and party viewed the e-Learning Centres and IT companies in the MICT Park and their activities. Next, the guests visited the Bagan Cybertech.
From there, they proceeded to the Drug Elimination Museum in Kamayut Township and Chairman of Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing and Police Brig-Gen Tin Win and officials were on hand to welcome them. Responsible personnel conducted them around the museum.
The Vice Premier of PRC signed in the visitors' book of the Drug Elimination Museum. The Vice Premier left the museum at 5 pm after exchanging souvenirs with Chairman of CCDAC Col Tin Hlaing. Madam Zhang Suzhen, wife of the Vice Premier of PRC, this morning visited Myanma Gems Museum.

Health and education matters discussed between Myanmar and China
Yangon, 15 Jan - Issues on the education and health sectors between the Union of Myanmar and the People's Republic of China were discussed by the ministers of the two countries at a meeting held at the Diamond Jubilee Hall on Pyay Road this evening.
Deputy Minister U Myo Nyunt gave an account of educational matters and Deputy Minster Professor Dr Kyaw Myint and directors-general of Myanmar's health sector.
Then, Myanmar Education Minister U Than Aung and Chinese Education Minister Ms Chen Zhili exchanged views on the health and education sectors of the two countries and had cordial discussions on promoting those sectors.

Delegates to ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Science and Technology arrive
Yangon,15 Jan - A total of 33 delegates from ASEAN countries 4 from Singapore, 3 from Brunei, 4 from Thailand, 3 from Indonesia, 2 from Cambodia, 2 from the Philippines, 5 from Vietnam, 6 from Malaysia, 2 from Laos and 2 from ASEAN Secretariat arrived here today to attend the 2nd ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Science and Technology which will be held here on 16 and 17 January. They were welcomed at Yangon International Airport by Deputy Minister for Science and Technology Dr Chan Nyein, the directors-general of the departments under the ministry, rectors and officials.

Minister inspects dockyard project, airport in Monywa
Yangon, 15 Jan - Minister for Transport Maj- Gen Hla Myint Swe, arrived at the site of Chindwin Dockyard of Inland Water Transport in Monywa on 13 January.
Responsible officials reported to the minister and party on completion of the dockyard, office buildings and arrangements for electricity and water supply tasks. Managing Director U Tun Aung Myint of Inland Water Transport gave a supplementary report on passenger boat services along Monywa, Homalin and Kalewa, earnings and use of electricity and fuel. The minister gave necessary instructions and inspected found the project site. Then, the minister, who is also in-charge of Monywa -Industrial Zone, met with entrepreneurs of the zone at Monywa Industrial Zone Hall.
Responsible officials and entrepreneurs reported to the minister on the paintings symbolizing the industrial zone and products to be displayed at the Industrial Exhibition in Mandalay, future tasks and progress of works. The meeting came to a close with concluding remarks by the minister. After the meeting, the minister inspected the assembling of Chindwin Star vehicles and gave necessary instructions in the afternoon, the minister and party inspected construction works of a runway at, Monywa Airport and fulfilled the requirements.
Ninety-two per cent of Shweli Bridge Project completed
Yangon, 15 Jan - Members of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Soe Win and Lt-Gen Ye Myint and Minister for Information Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan inspected Shweli Bridge Project yesterday.
Ninety-two per cent of the bridge project has been completed at present. They were accompanied by Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Chairman Central Command Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint and officials.
Located on Tagaung-Katha section of the Mandalay-Tagaung-Katha-Bhamo-Myitkyina strategic road, the bridge will link Pyinhtaung village in Katha Township, Sagaing Division, and Nga-O village in Mabein Township, northern Shan State. Under the guidance of State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe, the strategic road was built to develop the eastern bank of Ayeyawady River and regional economy and further strengthen national unity. It was commissioned into service on 11 May 2000.
State Peace and Development Council Secretary-1 General Khin Nyunt drove in the stake to build the bridge on 11 May 2000. Supported by 30 reinforced concrete piers, and connected by two approach structures, the bridge is 2,330 feet long. Its maximum load bearing capacity is 60 tons; and clearance at highest water level, 20 feet high and 130 feet wide. At the briefing hall, Lt-Gen Soe Win and Lt-Gen Ye Myint and party heard a report on progress in implementing the project, presented by Senior Engineer U Win Kyi. Efforts should be made to meet the required standard and ensure worksite safety, pointed out Lt-Gen Ye Myint.
During their inspection of the project, they attended to the needs of the officials concerned. The bridge will ensure more convenience for the cars traveling on the strategic road.
Patients with cleft lip and palate undergo surgical treatments
Yangon, 15 Jan - MMCWA Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Deputy Minister Prof Dr Mya Oo and officials left here by air this morning and arrived at Toungoo Airport at 7.45 pm.
Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and party viewed the patients with cleft lip and palate who were undergoing surgical treatments by a team led by Specialist Prof Dr Khin Maung Lwin at Toungoo Hospital. She presented cash and gifts to the patients. Then, cash donation ceremony for the patients was held. At the ceremony, MMCWA Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe explained matters related to surgical treatments for handicapped children.
She then presented K 1,344,468 for the cost of medicines and medical equipment to Dr Khin Maung Lwin and medicines, medical equipment and K 159,810 for 55 patients to Medical Superintendent Dr Myint Myint Than. Later, Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein spoke words of thanks.
Vegetable and Poultry Farming Special Zone in Hmawby inspected
Yangon, 15 Jan - Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Myint Swe inspected Yangon Division Vegetable and Poultry Farming Special Zone near Nyaung-hnapin Village in Hmawby Township this afternoon.
Special zone-1 in-charge Yangon Division Manager of Myanma Agriculture Service U Aung Hsan, District Commissioner U Thein Naing of Yangon North District General Administration Department from special zone-2, special zone-1 in-charge Head of Settlement and Land Records Department U Naing Win reported on clearing of land, land preparation, cultivation of vegetables and raising of fowls and layers and fish.
Director of Yangon Division Irrigation Department U Kyaw Thein reported on irrigation to the special zones from Ngamoyeik Dam and Kalihtaw Dam, Yangon Division Executive Engineer of Myanma Electric Power Enterprise U Aung Kyaw Oo on power supply, Chairman of Supervisory Committee for Yangon Division Vegetable Cultivation and Poultry Farming Special Zone Division Commissioner of GAD U Hla Soe on construction of culverts and temporary wooden bridges and Division Engineer U Saw Mu Dei Lu of Myanma Posts Telecommunications on installation of telephones.
Then, the national entrepreneurs reported on cultivation of vegetables, farming activities and requirements. Commander Maj-Gen Myint Swe said the special zone was established for the public to consume sufficient vegetables, meat and fish without relying on other states and divisions and necessary assistance for the entrepreneurs and breeders was provided as much as possible. He called on departmental officials to render assistance to them.
The commander and party inspected cultivation of vegetables and crops, construction sites for telephone booth, culverts and poultry farming of BTB Co Ltd. Vegetables are grown on 2,515 acres of lands for this year and over 760,000 layers are raised. Over 600,000 fowls were sold. Over one million fish were bred in 500 acres of fish ponds.
The commander and party inspected No 2 poultry farm of Yangon Command in Hmawby Township and gave instructions.
Kyonbay Street in Bagan upgraded
The NyaungU (Bagan) Township Development Affairs Department is upgrading the Kyonbay road near Tharapa Gate in Bagan (Old Town) into a 3,800 feet long and 12 feet wide gravel road. Township DAD Executive Officer Deputy Director U Aye Myint and Assistant Engineer U Tun Zaw closely supervised the construction tasks. On completion, people can go from Tharapa Gate to Shwekuncha Pagoda and Ayeyawady Jetty conveniently.
Students pay respects to teachers tD Paukkaung
The fifth respect-paying ceremony of Paukkaung Basic Education High School was held at the hall of the school on 29 December. A total of 59 teachers who are 60 years old and above were paid respects and presented gifts.
Self-reliance library opens in Kyugok (pansai)
Muse Township Peace and Development Council Secretary U Tin 00, Township USDA Secretary U Sai Maung Hlaing and Muse District Information and Public Relations Department Staff Officer Daw Khin San formally opened the Lunge Ahman self-reliance library was opened at the hall of Kyugok (Pansai) Union Solidarity and Development Association in Muse Township on 4 January. Wellwishers then presented cash, books and periodicals and library furniture to the library.
Long staple cotton collectively sold
Under the arrangements of Kyaukse District Cotton Purchasing Supervisory Committee, over 200 farmers from Than, Kin Taungtaw and Kyaukphya villages in Kyaukse Township collectively sold altogether 10,175 viss of long staple cotton at the Cotton Purchasing Camp at Than Village in the township on 24 December .
Domestic Science Course opens
The opening of the Basic Domestic Science Course No 25/2002 and the Advanced Tailoring Course No 4/2002 of Loikaw Domestic Science Vocational Training School in Loikaw was held on 30 December. Acting Principal Daw Thida Thin explained the arrangements for the courses. Trainees from regiments and units in the townships and other departments attended the one-week courses.
Six roads put back into service in Hsipaw
Hailing the 55th Anniversary Independence Day, the opening of 5,200 feet long six roads in Hsipaw, Shan State (North), constructed by Township Development Affairs Department during the fiscal year 2002-2003 was held at the archway at the corner of Kantkaw Road and Myatlay Road in Taungmyo Ward on 2 January morning. District Peace and Development Council Chairman Lt-Col Maung Muang Kyi made a speech and Township DAD Executive Officer Assistant Director U Htay Win, Township Peace and Development Council Chairman U Ngwe Thaik and Townselder U Sai Lun Tha formally opened the roads.
Yangon, 15 Jan - Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung met with the trainees of General Administration Course (Officer) (4/2002)and engine driver course at the Central Institute of Transport and Communication in Meiktila on 12 and 13 January and gave necessary instructions.

Yangon, 15 Jan - A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and police force, acting on a tip-off, searched Tun Wai at Lunn Kyaing riverside bathing place in Tachilek on 24 June, 2002, and seized 15 liters of phencodine from him.
In connection with the case, action was taken against Tun Wai, 31, son of U Bo of Palian (1) Ward, Honglaik village-tract in Tachilek under Section 15/19 (A)/ 20 (B) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by Tachilek Police Station. Tachilek District Court sentenced him to 20 years' imprisonment under section 19 (A) on 6 December.
Yangon, 15 Jan- A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Anti-Drug Squads, acting on information, on 3 January stopped and searched Hilux car with number plates Dha/ 1356 near Hopait Village in Lashio Township and discovered 2.649 kilos of heroin kept in the 66 soap cases from Ma Jar Lat (a) Ma Jar Bauk; daughter of U Zaw Maw of Jayan Village, Lashio Township.
Similarly, the combined team also arrested Daw Tin Tin, daughter of U Lone of Service quarter No 12, Room No 3 of Mandalay Hospital, on 6 January together with 0.35904 kilos of heroin kept in 22 soap cases while searching No 132 train at Naungpain Station en route from Lashio to Mandalay.
Police station concerned cases against them under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.
