Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to President and Prime Minister of Sri Lanka       

Yangon, 4  Feb — On the occasion of the Anniversary of the Independence Day of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka which falls on 4 February 2003, Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar, has sent messages of felicitations to Her Excellency Madame Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and to His Excellency, Honourable Mr Ranil Wickremesinghe, Prime Minister of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.



Minister U Win Aung sends felicitations to Sri Lankan counterpart 

Yangon, 4 Feb — On the occasion of the Anniversary of the Independence Day of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka which falls on 4 February 2003, His Excellency U Win Aung, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Union of Myanmar, has sent message of felicitations to His Excellency Honourable Tyronne Fernando, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.

Maha Atula Pattanila Bowl conveyed onto Mindhamma Hill

Yangon, 3 Feb — Deputy Minister for Transport U Pe Than, Director-General U Sann Lwin of Department of Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana and party conveyed Maha Atula Pattanila Bowl by train from Mandalay to Yangon on 1 February.

The train conveying the Bowl stopped over in railway stations along the route for public obeisance. The train arrived at the junction of Kanaung Minthagyi Road and Yangon-Mandalay railroad between Toegyaung-gale and Ywathagyi stations in Dagon Myothit (East) Township on 2 February evening.

Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe, Deputy Minister for Rail Transportation Thura U Thaung Lwin, Deputy Minister for Science and Technology U Nyi Hla Nge, No 2 Military Region Commander Col Tun Kyi, Adviser to the State Peace and Development Council Office U Arnt Maung, officials and local people welcomed and paid homage to the bowl.

The bowl was conveyed by the decorated carriage onto Mindhamma Hill this morning. Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko, No 1 Military Region Commander Col Tint Hsan, officials and people paid homage to the bowl.

Then, technicians and workers are conveying the bowl onto the throne on the platform of Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Buddha Image.


Pongal Celebration of All Myanmar Tamil (Hindu) Foundation held

Yangon, 3 Feb — Organized by All Myanmar Tamil (Hindu) Foundation held in commemoration of Pongal Celebration  at Inya Lake Hotel yesterday. Present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko, Director-General  of  Department of Religious Affairs Dr Myo Myint, Indian Ambassador to Myanmar Mr Rajiv Kumar Bhatia and wife, staff of embassy, staff of Nepali embassy to Myanmar, Patron of All Myanmar Tamil (Hindu) Foundation  and Chairman of Certral Hindu Religious Organization Dr Thet Lwin, Chairman of All Myanmar Tamil (Hindu) Foundation  U Zaw Zaw Naing  and executive committee  members, festival organizing committee members, responsible personnel of Christian Religious Organization and Islam Religious Organization and guests.

First, the deputy minister ignited the light  to mark the Pongal Celebration.

Then, the deputy minister made a speech. Dr Thet Lwin and Indian ambassador to Myanmar Mr Rajiv Kumar Bahtia extended the greeting. Joint-Secretary of All Myanmar Tamil (Hindu) Foundation U Hla Shwe and Chairman of festival organizing committee U Kyaw Htike explained the purpose of the celetration. Tamil (Hindu) cultural troup entertained those present with dances. Indian musician Mr Gagangai Amaran sang songs to the accompaniment of his band and it came to a close.


Transport Minister attends prize presentation for outstanding athletes, closing of training courses

Yangon, 3 Feb — A ceremony to present prizes to outstanding athletes of departments and organizations of the Ministry of Transport in the local and international sports competitions was held at the ministry this morning.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe . First, the minister gave a speech. Then, the ministers, the wife of the minister, the deputy ministers, OSD and departmental heads and their wives presented cash prizes to the winners in the sepak takraw event in XIV Asian Games and local sports competitions.

On behalf of the athletes, sepak takraw player U Aung Kyaw Moe spoke words of thanks. Then, the minister gave concluding remarks.

Afterwards, the minister delivered an address at the closing ceremony of Computer Course No 3/2001 and opening ceremony of Course No 1/2003 at the meeting hall of Myanma Shipyards and presented cash prizes to instructors through U Myo Nyein Aye. Next, Deputy Minister U Pe Than and OSD Brig-Gen Myo Tin presented completion certificates to the trainees who attended the eight-week course.

Then, the minister, the deputy minister and party inspected the computer room. Next, the minister and party attended the opening ceremony of the basic on-job training course No 1/2003 at the hall of Dalla Shipyard.

After the opening ceremony, the minister and party inspected construction of the express vessel to be run between Mandalay and Bhamo at the shipyard. Then, the minister inspected repair of Bala Kyawthu vessel at the dry dock and heard reports on repair works by officials.


Broadcasting of TV programmes hailing 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day coordinated

Yangon, 3 Feb — The coordination meeting on broadcasting of TV programmes hailing 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day and information matters was held at the meeting hall of the Ministry of Information on Bo Aung Kyaw Street at 2 pm today, with an address by Minister for Information Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Information Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan said that according to the guidance of the Head of State, the Ministry of Information, Myawady TV and ministries concerned are to cover and telecast today’s development tasks of the State as TV programmes in honour of the 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day during the period from 1 to 26 March.

The ministries concerned are to provide assistance to be able to telecast better quality TV programmes more than the previous year’s programmes hailing 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day. In addition, Myawady TV, the Radio Myanma, the TV Myanmar and newspapers are to manage broadcasting and issuing of the programmes hailing 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day.

Maj-Gen Khin Aung Myint of the Ministry of Defence discussed arrangements for broadcasting of the Myanma TV programmes.

Next, Director-General U Khin Maung Htay of Myanma Radio and Television reported on tasks to be coordinated with ministries concerned for broadcasting the programmes in honour of the 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day.

Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu reported assistance to be provided in covering the programmes related to the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism.

Afterwards, officials of the Quartermaster-General’s Office and industrial zones and private entrepreneurs participated in the discussions for covering and telecasting of TV programmes in their respective sectors.

Later, the minister gave a concluding remarks and the meeting came to an end.


PBANRDA Minister tours Rakhine State    

Yangon, 3 Feb— The Hitdaw hoisting ceremony of rebuilt Lawka Htaikpan YwaOo Pagoda was held at Pyatha model village in Maungtaw Township on 1 February.

The village was established by Ministry for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs.  

Present were Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt and officials.

The minister and party inspected tasks for establishment of the village and use and maintenance of power tillers provided for agricultural purposes.

The minister explained rural health, education and regional development and presented exercise books and clocks and a 21" TV set and 20 Maung Myanmar trishaws provided by border areas immigration and control command.

The minister and party inspected development tasks in Buthidaung and service personnel. The minister gave instructions on tasks for making the town beautiful and pleasant, rural roads and supply of pure drinking water.

The minister and party inspected paving of roads and development affairs tasks. The minister called for cooperation for regional development in meeting with departmental personnel.

The minister and party inspected vocational training school in Sittway founded by Ministry for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs in cooperation with BAJ of Japan.

On 2 February, the minister went to border areas and national race youths development training school in Sittway and inspected training on traditional culture and propagation of the Union Spirit and construction.


Prisons Department meets   

Yangon, 3 Feb — The third four-monthly work coordination meeting of the Prisons Department, Ministry of Home Affairs, was held at the Director-General’s Office of the department at noon today, attended by Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Col Tin Hlaing said the Prisons Department is an organization which is responsible for security of the State, rule of law and order and community peace and tranquillity. Emphasis is to be placed on security and measures are to be undertaken for security of the people through correct and proper law channel. Tasks are also to be undertaken through administrative means based on obedience of law.  In addition to discharging the security tasks for the people, it is required to strive for development of agriculture and livestock breeding sectors in accord with the targets. Rural development tasks also should be undertaken for public welfare, he added.

Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung also made a speech.


Ministry of Finance and Revenue, Central Bank of Myanmar, Budget  Department inspected

Yangon, 3 Feb—Minister for Finance and Revenue Maj-Gen Hla Tun met with Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun, the Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar, directors-general and managing directors and officials at the meeting hall of the ministry on Sethmu Street in Yankin Township this morning.

Then, the minister and officials, inspected round the ministry’s office. Then, the minister inspected the Central Bank of Myanmar and the Budget  Department where the heads of department reported on functions of the respective departments. After giving necessary instructions, the minister greeted those present.     


Facts-for-life training course on HIV/AIDS for housewives held

Yangon, 3 Feb—A ceremony to open the facts-for-life training course on HIV/AIDS for housewives from Phekon, Hsihseng, Hopong and Mongyawng Townships,  was held at Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association at the corner of Thanthuma and Parami Roads in South Okkalapa Township here this morning. MMCWA and UNICEF sponsored the course.

Also present were MMCWA Chairperson Professor Dr Daw Kyu Kyu Swe,  Vice-Chairpersons Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and Dr Kyi Soe, CEC members, the patrons, officials of Health Department (AIDS/Leprosy Control Project), course instructors and trainees The Chairperson made an opening speech. The one-week course is being attended by 44 trainees.

Paddy collectively sold in Nattalin

As a gesture of hailing 56th Anniversary Union Day, the farmers of respective villages collectively sold paddy at Ywathagon paddy purchase depot and 100-ton paddy purchase depot No 2 in Nattalin Township on 24 January. In Nattalin, a total of 939,074.26 baskets of paddy against the target of 1,157,922 have been purchased till 27 January.

Talks on women’s rights held in Hpa-an

Organized by Hpa-an District Working Committee for Women’s Affairs, a talks on laws related to women’s rights were held at the monastery in Kawkyaik Village, Hpa-an Township, on 26 January. Chairman of Hpa-an District WCWA District Commissioner U Saw Myat Htut of General Administration Department gave a speech. District Law Officer U Ye Myint then
explained laws related to women’s rights.

 Gravel road opened at Pyinmana Institute of Agriculture

A ceremony to open the gravel road to Institute of Agriculture was held on 9 January. The road was built by Pyinmana Township Development Affairs Committee. Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Saw Aung and Township Development Affairs Committee Executive Officer U Htin Aung Myint formally opened the road.

 Rural earth road constructed in Letpadan

Letpadan Township Development Affairs Committee Executive Officer U Saw Naing and Assistant Engineer U Aung Moe Thwin and workers are carrying out construction of Chaunghson-Tawkalat earth road on 15 January. Township authorities inspected the tasks and fulfilled the requirements.

22nd Executive Committee Meeting and the 10th General Assembly  of AFMA and FAO/AFMA and Myanmar: Regional Seminar on Improving Agricultural Marketing Information System held

Yangon, 3 Feb— The opening ceremony of the 22nd Executive Committee Meeting and the 10th General Assembly  of Association of Food and Agricultural Marketing Agency (AFMA) in Asia and the Pacific and FAO and AFMA and Myanmar Regional Seminar on Improving Agricultural Marketing Information System hosted in Myanmar was held at Traders Hotel on Sule Pagoda Road this morning.

Present were Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Ministers at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman’s Office Brig-Gen Abel and Lt-Gen Min Thein, Myanmar Ambassadors from member countries of AFMA, delegates from Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, resident representatives of FAO and officials, delegates from AFMA, resource persons, heads of departments of the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation and officials.

First, Minister Brig-Gen Pyi Sone extended greetings. Resident representative of FAO Mr Bhaskar Barua and Executive Director Mr M R Satyal spoke on the occasion.

The ministers, executive committee members of FAO and AFMA and delegates had photo taken.

Next, the Seminar on Improving Agricultural Marketing Information System was held at Konbaung Hall at the hotel.

Senior Marketing Officer of FAO Dr Andrew Shepherd submitted the paper on Making Market Information Services Relevant to Farmers and General Manager of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading U Thein Lwin and Deputy Director  of Directorate of Trade Daw Thin Htut Thida paper on Analyzing Marketing System to Understand Market Information Needs.

Delegates of FAO, Bangladesh, China and India also submitted regional papers and participants took part in the discussions.  Minister Brig-Gen Pyi Sone hosted a dinner to the delegates and resource persons at Traders Hotel.


Coordinator of JICA, Professor of ANU call on Minister U Than Aung 

Yangon, 3 Feb — The delegation led by Coordinator Mr Kenji Iwaguchi called on Minister for Education U Than Aung at 2 pm today and the delegation led by Director of Research School of Pacific and Asia Studies Professor from Australian National University (ANU) James Fox called on Minister for Education U Than Aung at 2.30 pm at Diamon Jubilee Hall.

Present at the calls were Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung and U Myo Nyunt, directors-general and professors under the ministry of education.

Yangon, 3 Feb — Minister for Information Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan received Producer of Mimesha Production Co Mr Sanjoy Hazarika of India at his office on Bo Aung Kyaw Street at 9 am today.

Myanmar ICT Week continues

Yangon, 3 Feb — The Second Myanmar ICT Week continued at the MICT Park on Hline University Campus today. It was visited by students, youths, entrepreneurs and public with keen interest.

At the exhibition, the public took great interest in use of IT, Internet, Intranet, Net Work Game and e-Banking System, Hire Purchase System e-Service of  AWB, Yoma and MMB Bank displayed at  198 boothes of companies from home and abroad including ones of the ministry. Computer and accessories are being sold at reasonable prices at the exhibition. The exhibition continues from 9 am to 5 pm till 5 February.


Prizes presented to winners in Computer Network Game

Yangon, 3 Feb — The prize presentation for winners in Myanmar Counter Strike Computer Network Game of the Second Myanma Information and Communication Technology Week was held at the MICT Park this evening. Game in-charge of Ko Po Tha of Net-Zone explained facts about the game. Then, Dr Ye Naing Win of Bagan Cybertech, General Manager U Chan Mya of Asia Wealth Bank, Vice-Chairman U Kyaw Paing of Yoma Bank presented prizes to the winners. Then, the Luke Clan group donated K 200,000 for further computer network games to game in-charge Ko Po Tha.

Myanmar canoe team bags 5 gold, 10 silver, 2 bronze in 4th SEA Canoeing Contest             

Yangon, 3 Feb — The Myanmar canoe team participated in 18 events in the 4th South-East Asia Canoeing Contest in Thailand from 27 January to 3 February.

The Myanmar team won five gold, 10 silver and two bronze medals.

The team bagged  five gold medals in the canoe men’s two oars 1000-metre event, the men’s two oars 500-metre event, the men’s two oars 200-metre event, the kayak men’s two oars 200-metre event and the kayak women’s one oar 200-metre event; 10 silvers in the canoe men’s one oar 1000-metre event, the kayak men’s two oars 1000-metre event, the kayak men’s one oar 1000-metre event, the kayak women’s two oar 1000-metre event, kayak women’s one oar 1000-metre event, the canoe men’s one oar 500-metre event, the kayak men’s two oar 500-metre event, the kayak men’s one oar 500-metre event, the kayak women’s two oar 500-metre event and the kayak women’s one oar 500-metre event; and two bronzes in the canoe men’s one oar 200-metre event and the kayak men’s one oar 200-metre event.

The Myanmar team was formed with B class players. They left for Malaysia today to take part in the International Canoeing Contest and will arrive back here on 10 February. 



Final events of second round for 48th ISD men’s soccer tournament conclude

Yangon, 3 Feb — The 48th Inter-State and Division men’s soccer tournament for 2003 continued with its final events of second round at the designated football grounds this evening. The soccer match of group (bb) Bago Division played against Ayeyawaddy Division in Aung San football ground and the former won the latter 2-1. A player, Kyi Khine of Bago Division got player of the match award  in the match. In group (bb), Kachin State beat Yangon Division 1-0 in Padonma sports ground, San-gyoung Township and a player, Myo Nyunt Thwin got  player of the match award. The first semifinal match of Shan State(South) and Bago Division will play on 6 February and the second semifinal of Ayeyawaddy Division and Kayin State on 7 February.


Invitational boxing on 6-8 Feb

Yangon, 3 Feb—With the sponsorship of Myanmar Olympic Committee and Myanmar Boxing Federation, the four-nation invitational boxing contest will be held at the National Indoor Stadium-1, Thuwunna, from 6 to 8 February.

Contestants from Myanmar, Laos, Pakistan and the Republic of Korea will take part in the contest.

Entrance fee is K 500 for grand stand and K 200 for stall. The Loi Hein Co Ltd in cooperation with Myanmar Boxing Federation will provide Fantasy soft drinks and Alpine purified drinking water to the contest. 


Opium seized in Phakant

Yangon, 3 Feb—A combined team comprising members of the local  intelligence unit and the local police force, acting on information, searched the house of Sein Hlaing, son of U Thaung, of Aunkkalahmaw Village, Myaukpyu Village-tract, Phakant Township, on 30 December 2002 and seized 694.5 grams of opium.

Further information led to the arrest of suspect Ma Thein Nyo, 32, daughter of U Aik Ohn, of the same ward.

Action is being taken against the two under Section 15/19(A)/21 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotrotic Substances Law by Phakant Police Station.
