State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends message of condolence to President of the United States of America

Yangon, 5 Feb — Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of condolence to the Honourable George W Bush, President of the United States of America on the tragic disaster of American  space  shuttle in which seven astronauts have lost their lives.


Secretary-1  inspects Maha Atula Pattanila Bowl

Yangon, 4 Feb — Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at Mindhamma Hill at 6.15 pm today.

First, the Secretary-1 inspected Maha Atula Pattanila Bowl to be offered to Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Buddha Image and attended to the needs.

Then, Secretary-1 General Khin Nyunt and party paid homage to the image.

After inspecting the construction tasks on Mindhamma Hill, the Secretary-1 cordially greeted the pilgrims who visited the image and left there.

Commander inspects model farm in Sagaing

Yangon, 4 Feb — Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander of North-West Command Maj-Gen Soe Naing, attended the work coordination meeting on cultivation of cold season crops in ChaungU Township held at the office of the Township Peace and Development Council on 30 January.

First, Chairman of ChaungU Township Peace and Development Council U Khin Maung Aye reported on development tasks and cultivation of cold season crops. Chairman Lt-Col Win Naung of Monywa District Peace and Development Council read a supplementary report. The meeting ended with the concluding remarks by the commander.

Afterwards, the commander proceeded to the summer paddy special zone near Kaunghmudaw Lake in Sagaing and inspected the model farm. Chairman of Sagaing District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Sein Ya and members of the agricultural supervisory committee reported to the commander on cultivation of summer paddy. The commander gave instructions on meeting the target of cultivated acreage, boosting of per-acre yield and extended cultivation of double-cropping.

Then, the commander attended the work coordination meeting on cultivation of cold season crops and boosting agricultural production held at Mya Eya Hall in Sagaing. The chairman of the District Peace and Development Council and officials reported on cultivation of cold season crops and future tasks. The commander attended to the needs, and the meeting concluded.


Talks on women’s rights held in Myitkyina

Yangon, 4 Feb— Talks on women’s rights organized by Kachin State Working Committee for Women’s Affairs was held at the town hall in Myitkyina on 27 January.

Chairman of Kachin State Peace and Development Council Commander of Northern Command Maj-Gen Maung Maung Swe spoke at length on development of Myanmar women and care service of young women and children.

Member of Kachin State Working Committee for Women’s Affairs leader of prevention of violence against women and rehabilitation group wife of the commander Daw Tin Tin Nwe explained functions of work committees.

Deputy Law Officer of Kachin State Daw Marang Jafer gave talks on rights which Myanmar women are enjoying and Psychiatrist Dr Khin Ko Ko Thu on counselling works.


Maintenance of Taunggyi-Aungban-Pinlaung-Pyinmana Road under way

Yangon, 4 Feb — Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council Commander of Eastern Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Myint inspected road maintenance work on Taunggyi-Aungban-Pinlaung-Pyinma-na motorway on 30 January.

At Pinlaung Station hall, he discussed regional development undertakings with local  authorities and officials of Kalaw, Pinlaung and Pekhon townships.

In the afternoon, he inspected Pinlaung-Pyinmana road. Officials also reported to him on progress in extension and repair of the road section-wise. He met with the staff of the project.

The commander also inspected thriving crop fields and Y53-Hlwegyi-Pyinmana section of the road.


51st National Championship Inter-ministry Track & Field Meet

Yangon, 4 Feb— Myanmar Olympic Committee Chairman’s Shield  the 51st National Championship Inter-ministry Track and Field Meet was held in the Aung San Stadium this morning.

Chairman of MOC Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint formally opened the tournament. Defending champions YCDC men’s team and the Ministry of Home Affairs women’s  team and the Ministry of Home Affairs team handed over shields to the minister.

Altogether 243 athletes from 12 ministries participated in the events which continue till 8 February.

Wellwisher Dental Engineer U Soe Han of Singapore presented K 50,000 to President of Myanmar Track and Field Federation U Myint Tun.

Pyapon District Crime Reduction Supervisory Committee meets

Pyapon District Crime Reduction Supervisory Committee held the coordination meeting at Pyapon District General Administration Department on 21 January. Chairman of Pyapon District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Myo Myint made a speech. Officials reported on arrangements for reducing criminal cases in 2003. 

Education signboard, stone inscription unveiled at Yankin BEHS No 2

The signboard bearing to build a modern and developed nation through education and the stone inscription bearing Myanmar education goal were unveiled at Yankin BEHS No 2 on 31 January. Outstanding students unveiled the signboard. Then, Deputy Director U Nu of No 3 Basic Education Department (Yangon City) unveiled the stone inscription. 

Armed Forces Day extempore talks held in Wakema

As a gesture of hailing the 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day, the extempore talk contest, organized by Wakema Township Union Solidarity and Development Association, was held at Shwewei Thiri Gymnasium on 20 January. A total of 17 competitors participated in the contest. Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Tun Zaw, Township USDA Secretary
U Kyaw Lwin and officials presented prizes to the respective winners. 

Rice, oil donated to Parahita School for the Blind

The ceremony to donate 50 bags of rice and 40 viss of groundnut oil presented by youths from Singapore through writer Chit San Win to U Ñeya Parahita School for the Blind near Maha Arnthtoo Kantha Pagoda in PyinOoLwin on 19 January. Writer Chit San Win explained the purpose of the donations and presented the donations to Chairman of the School for the Blind Management Board U Win Myint (Retired Police Lt-Col).     

Rural development tasks explained in Chauk

Officials of Chauk Township Union Solidarity and Development Association and Township Information and Public Relations Department gave lectures on implementation for future tasks of USDA and participation in rural development tasks in Kyaukye and Thanbo village-tracts in Pakhannge Station on 24 and Hsuyitkan and Minkan villages in the same station in Chauk Township on 26 January.

 Sanitation carried out at feeder canal of Ngamin Reservoir

Under the leadership of Taungdwingyi Township Peace and Development Council, sanitation works were carried out for proper flow of water by workers of Irrigation Department and local farmers at No 2 feeder canal of Ngamin Reservoir on 26 January. They will put 1,000 acres of land near the canal under summer paddy. 

Surgeon team goes field trip to Kawthoung

Dr U Khin Lin of Central Malaria Control Unit of Health Department, Deputy Head of Taninthayi Division Health Department Dr Ni Ni Aye, Head of Kawthoung District Health Department Dr U Lay Kyaw and Professor Dr Kalamoto of Nagoya University of Japan went a field trip to villages in Kawthoung on 15 and 16 January. The team provided medical treatment to the local people.


 Rehearsal for relaying Union Flag

Yangon, 4 Feb — The trial performance of the Subcommittee for Setting up billboard to convey the Union Flag and the emblems of states was held today. The Union Flag is to be relayed in four districts of Yangon Division according to relaying programme for the 56th Union Flag. Chairman of Subcommittee for Setting up billboard to convey the Union Flag and the emblem of states Secretary of Yangon City Development Committee Col Myint Aung viewed the practice session.

In the relaying programme for the Union Flag, the Flag was relayed from the starting  point of the City Hall to Gyobyu playground representing Yangon North District, Dagon Myothit (South) playground representing Yangon East District, Thiha Dipa playground in Thanlyin representing Yangon South District, Salin playground in Kyemyindine representing Yangon West District and People’s Square and back to the City Hall where the flag will stop-over for one year. Head of Engineering Department (Building)  of Yangon City Development Commitee  U Zaw Win and subcommittee members practised the  relaying of the flag systematically.


Basic course for tourist guides to be opened

Yangon, 4 Feb — Directorate of Hotels and Tourism, Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, has arranged to open the basic course No 1/2003 for tourists guides on 10 February.

Those who were admitted to the course have been announced at the training school of the ministry on Bo Sun Pat Street. They are to enlist themselves at the DHT on 7 February the latest.

PBANRDA Minister receives guest

Yangon, 4 Feb— Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt received Mr Takashi Yoshida of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)  at his office yesterday.

Rural water supply project in Bagan-NyaungU and matters relating to vocational training school in Sittway founded by Development Affairs Department in cooperation with JICA and BAJ of Japan were discussed.


Health minister and officials arrive to attend meeting of GAEL

Yangon, 4 Feb— Minister of Health of Guinea Prof Manadou Soliau Diauo and member Dr Sakoba Keita, member Dr Justin Ndoyo of Central Africa, Regional Director of AFRO Dr E- brahim M Samba and member Dr Landry Bide arrived here by air at 7.15 pm today to attend the third meeting of Global Alliance for Elimination of Leprosy to be held at Sedona Hotel in Myanmar from 6 to 8 February.

Director-General Dr Wan Maung of the Health Department, Resident Representative of World Health Organization Dr Agostino Borra and officials were on hand to welcome them at the Yangon International Airport.


KOTRA office opens at Sakura Tower

Yangon, 4 Feb —The  Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Myanmar opened its new KOTRA office at Sakura Tower on Sule Pagoda Road here this morning. ROK Ambassador Mr Lee Kyung-Woo and Director-General of the Directorate of Trade U Nyunt Aye gave speeches on the occasion.

Myanmar ICT Week continues

Yangon, 4 Feb — The Second Myanmar ICT Week continued for the fifteenth day at MICT Park on Hline University Campus today. It was attended by public, teachers, students from all parts of Myanmar with keen interest.

The public and students took great interest in boothes concerning ICT and future tasks of ICT displayed by the ministries at the exhibition.

At the booth of Bagan Cybertech, booth of iP Star was displayed separately and booths from 12 foreign  companies and  64  local companies.

The exhibition will be held on 5 February as the last day.


IT Caravan gives lectures at Taungdwingyi, NyaungU

Yangon, 4 Feb— With the aim of widening the scope of knowledge of students and the public in Internet and information technology, the IT Caravan comprising computer experts of MCF and Myanmar Computer Industry Association and youths of IT companies, led by President of Myanmar Computer Federation U Thein Oo, Vice-President Former Rector of University of Computer Studies Adviser to the Ministry of Education Dr Kyaw Thein,  left Pyay by car on 29 January and arrived at Taungdwingyi in Magway Division at 11 am on that day.

They demonstrated the linking between Bagan Gateway and Internet with the use of telephone line there.

The IT caravan arrived at Bagan-NyaungU in the evening. On 30 January morning, they gave talks on the use of IT at the Basic Education High School in NyaungU. Chairman of NyaungU District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Khin Maung Oo and district and township level officials, Township Education Officer U Aung Win and officials, headmasters in the district, the secretary and officials of the District Union Solidarity and Development Association and social organizations, and youth interested in IT attended the talks.

First, President of Myanmar Computer Federation U Thein Oo made a speech. Member of Myanmar Computer Enthusiast Association  Director (Education) of the No 2 Basic Education Department U Aye Thein extended greetings. The managing director of CICC also spoke on the occasion.

Afterwards, Dr Kyaw Thein, U Myo Nyein Aye, U Kyaw Thu Aung, U Aung Than Nyunt, and U Aung Zaw Oo gave talks on IT under the titles of ICT and Youth Today, How to Apply the Multimedia in Education, Internet for Next Generation, Language Lab, and IT based Science Education respectively. The talks came to a close with concluding remarks by Vice-President of Myanmar Computer Federation Daw Wah Wah Tun.

After the talks, U Thein Oo presented commemorative pennant of IT caravan and books on IT worth K 66,700 to Director (Education) U Aye Thein and Headmistress Daw Tin Tin Win of the school. Then, Daw Wah Wah Tun and U Aung Than Nyunt presented CD Roms and CDs to the headmistress. The headmistress presented gifts to the managing director and Ms Iked of CICC.

The IT Caravan was arranged under the supervision of Myanmar e-National Task Force and organization of MCF. Centre of International Cooperating for Computerization sponsored the programme.


IT  lectures given at Toungoo in Bago Division

Yangon, 4 Feb— IT Caranvan gave lectures at No 4 Basic Education High School, Toungoo,  Bago Division on 2 February.

President of Myanmar Computer Federation U Thein Oo and No 1 Basic Education Department Deputy Dirctor-General U C Thaung Za Tuan extended greetings on the occasion.

Then, Vice-President of MCF Rector (Rted) of University of Computer Studies Adviser to the Ministry of Education Dr Kyaw Thein and IT technicians lectured on titles such as ICT and new generation, How to Apply the Multimedia in Education, Internet for Next Generation, Language Lab  IT Based Science Education and Vice-Chairperson Daw Wah Wah Tun of MICA gave concluding remarks.

After the ceremony, the Chairman of MCF presented a commemorative pennant to the Deputy Director-General Of No 1 Basic Education Department. Vice-Chairman Dr Kyaw Thein presented books worth K 66,700 donated by the Computer Journal to U Saw Ya Day of Bago Division Education Officer; Vice-Chairperson Daw Wah Wah Tun, Presentation CDs to U San Tin of Toungoo TEO; U Aung Than Nyunt of SOFT Guide Computer, Language Lab CDs to Headmestress of No 4 BEHS, Toungoo. Then, the Township Education Officer presented gifts to the MCF through Daw Than Than Tin of MCF. Next, IT technicians and lecturers demonstrated application of Internet and IT Technology and answered the queries.

Drug

Drug possessor jailed

Yangon, 4 Feb — A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Magway Special Anti-Drug Squad, acting on information on 31 May 2002, searched Htay Myint in Hnone Village, Chaungzon Village-tract, Myaing Township, and seized him together with 9.6 litres of phensedyl put in 96 bottles.

In connection with the case, Bahin Police Station filed a law suit against Htay Myint, 34, son of U Tin Maung of Khapat Village, Tamu, Sagaing Division, under section 15/19(A)220(A) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

Pakokku District Court sentenced him to 15 years in prison under section 19 (A) on 31 December 2002.


Opium refinery exposed in Laukkai Township

Yangon, 4 Feb—A combined team comprising members of the local intelligence unit, the local Tatmadaw battalion and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, raided and combed the area at the map reference (P 605380) near Ahlarbye Village in Laukkai Township on 12 January.

The team seized two huts used as opium refinery 504 litres of ethylalcohol, three litres of hydrochloric acid, eight kilos of bone charcoal, two flasks, one large steel funnel, two large enamelled bowls, one balance, 32 wooden trays used in drying out heroin and five inflaters.

Action is being taken in connection with the seized items under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by the police station concerned.
