Union Flag arrives in Yangon East District
Thousands of people welcome Union Flag along route

Dagon Myothit (South) Township Sports Grounds thronged with those who salute Union Flag

Yangon, 9 Feb — The Union Flag, which stopped over at Gyobyu Sports Grounds, was conveyed by flag  relay teams and the Union Boat from Taikkyi Township to Dagon Myothit (South) Township, Yangon East District, this morning, and then Chairman of Yangon South District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Aung Pyay planted it in the silver bowl on the stage at the sports grounds in Dagon Myothit (South) Township at 10.5 am.

The ceremony to carry the Union Flag from Taikkyi to Dagon Myothit (South) was held at Gyobyu Sports Ground this morning. Secretary of the Sub-committee for putting up posters and State and Division emblems Head of  Engineering Department (Building) of Yangon City Development Committee U Zaw Win, Joint-Secretary U Win Than and members, local authorities, executives of NGOs and local people attended it.

First, the local people together with the Guard of Honour of Phugyi Station saluted the flag. Meanwhile, the military band of Phugyi Station played the national anthem.

At 6.40 am, Chairman of Yangon North District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col San Matu took out the flag from the silver bowl on the stage at Gyobyu Sports Ground. Flanked by the four officers of  Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) and Myanmar Police Force and Union nationals, Lt-Col San Matu carried the flag to the archway of the sports grounds and handed over it to Chairman of Yangon East District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Aung Pyay.

Then, Lt-Col Aung Pyay conveyed the flag and planted it in the silver bowl on board the Union Boat.

Next, the Union Flag was carried by the Union Boat from Taikkyi Township to the archway in Dagon Myothit (South) Township through Yangon-Pyay Road, Khayaybin junction, No 3 Highway, Thudhamma Road, North Okkalapa Roundabout, Khemathi Road, Dagon Myothit Bridge, Sethmu Road, Bohmu Ba Htoo Road, Pyidaungsu Road and at the junction of roads in Dagon Myothit (South) and (North) townships.

The Union Flag was accorded a rousing welcome along the route by vast multitude of the people, members of Ward and Taikkyi, Hmawby, Mingaladon, North Okkalapa and Dagon Myothit (North) Township Peace and Development Councils, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, War Veterans Organizations, Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigade, MPF and Tatmadawmen of  Phugyi, Hmawby and Mingaladon Stations.

On arrival at the archway in Dagon Myothit (South) Township, Lt-Col Aung Pyay took out the flag from the silver bowl carried it flanked by the four officers of Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) and MPF and Union nationals. Then, he handed over the flag to Chairman of Dagon Myothit (South) Peace and Development Council U Khin Zaw, on Pyidaungsu Road.

Next, U Khin Zaw handed over the flag to South Okkalapa Township Peace and Development Council Chairman U Mya Aung again. 

Afterwards, the Union Flag was conveyed by relay teams of Dagon Myothit (South) Township MCWA, Yankin Township Peace and Development Council, Thingangyun Township Peace and Development Council, Dagon Myothit (South) Township Fire Services Department, Thaketa Township Peace and Development Council, Dawbon Township Peace and Development Council, Dagon Myothit (South) Township Red Cross Battalion, Tamway Township Peace and Development Council, Pazundaung Township Peace and Development Council, Dagon Myothit (South) WVO, Botahtaung Township Peace and Development Council, Mingala Taungnyunt Township Peace and Development Council.

Later, the flag was carried by relay teams of Yangon East District Red Cross Brigade, North Okkalapa Township Peace and Development Council, Dagon Myothit (North) Peace and Development Council, Dagon Myothit (Seikkan) Township Peace and Development Council, Yangon East District Auxiliary Fire Brigade, Dagon Myothit (East) Peace and Development Council, Yangon East District Education Department and Dagon Myothit (South) Peace and Development Council. Then, the Union Flag was handed over to Yangon East District USDA Secretary U Tin Aung at the sports grounds in Dagon Myothit (South) Township.

Meanwhile, the Mingala Drum troupe of Dagon Myothit (Seikkan) BEPS No 2 and the band of Shwepaukkan BEHS No 6 played music.

U Tin Aung and party carried the flag and handed it over to Lt-Col Aung Pyay in front of the grand stand of the grounds. Flanked by the four officers of Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) and Union nationals, Lt-Col Aung Pyay carried the flag and planted it in the silver bowl on the stage at the sports grounds in Dagon Myothit (South) Township at 10.5 am.

The Guard of Honour of Yangon Command and the local people saluted the Union Flag to the strains of the National Anthem played by the military band representing Yangon Command.

The local people thronged the sports grounds to salute the Union Flag. This evening, Shwewawin Anyeint troupe performed entertainment to the audience. Shops which sell household and personal goods and medicines were packed with customers.

The eight-township physical culture contest of Yangon North District was held at Gyobyu Sports Grounds yesterday and officials presented prizes to the respective winners.

Union Day exhibition continues

Yangon, 9 Feb — The 56th Anniversary Union Day Exhibition continued at Tatmadaw Convention Hall on U Wisara Road  for the third day today.

The exhibition was visited by departmental heads, Union Day delegates from states and divisions, Members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association,  students, teachers, monks and people totaling over 5,000.

At the exhibition, Sarpay Beikman book shop and News and Periodicals Enterprise book shop are selling books at reasonable prices.

Co-op Ministry holds coord meeting

Yangon, 9 Feb — The Ministry of Co-operatives held the third four-monthly coordination meeting at the meeting hall of the ministry on Bogyoke Aung San Street here this morning, attended by Minister for Co-operatives  Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe and officials.

The director-general of the Cooperative Department  reported on progress of the department, tasks being carried out by State/Division Cooperative Departments and future tasks. The director-general of Cottage Industries Department and the managing director of Cooperative Export Import Enterprise also reported on work progresses.


Dry Day inspection teams discharge duties

 Yangon, 9 Feb — Chairman of the Dry Day Supervisory Committee Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman’s Office Lt-Gen Min Thein, Vice-Chairman Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint and committee members, divided into two groups, supervised the Dry Day inspection teams  which are discharging duties here today.

The teams checked Dry Day Pass, driver licence, wheel tax and wearing of departmental uniforms of vehicles of Tatmadaw and department concerned at the main points of the city from 6 am to 6 pm. The also checked the vehicles violating traffic rules.


Commander inspects tax-free markets in Yangon City

Yangon, 9 Feb— Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Myint Swe inspected sales at tax-free markets in Yangon City this morning and gave necessary instructions to officials.

At 8.30 am, the commander and No 1 Military Region Commander Col Tint Hsan arrived at Yankin Tax-free Market near the Ministry of Industry-2 on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road in Yankin Township. They were welcomed there by District Commissioner U Aung Win Oo of General Administration Department, Chairman of Rice and Paddy Wholesalers Association U Nyein and officials of Yangon City Development Committee.

Then, the commander and party inspected sales of vegetables, meat, fish, egg, groceries, rice and personal goods at the market and gave necessary instructions to officials. Next, the commander and party proceeded to Tamway Tax-free Market on Kyaikkasan Road in Tamway Township. They saw over sales of goods at the market. The commander cordially conversed with shopkeepers and customers and fulfilled their needs.

On arrival at Hanthawady Tax-free Market at the junction of Hanthawady and Kyundaw Streets in Kamayut Township, the commander and party were welcomed by No 3 Military Region Commander Col Yan Naing Oo, Yangon West District Peace and Development Council Chairman Lt-Col Maung Maung Shein and officials.

Then, the commander and party inspected sales of vegetables, meat, fish, egg and groceries at the market and attended to their needs. Afterwards, they went to the tax-free market on Pantaya Road in Dagon Township and looked into sales of goods at the market.

The commander gave instructions to officials. He said shopkeepers are allowed to sell vegetables, meat and fish at the shops of the respective markets free of charge. Therefore, shopkeepers are to sell goods at reasonable price.  In addition, emphasis is to be placed on keeping the markets clean, he said.


A & I Minister inspects dams

Yangon, 9 Feb — Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, inspected regional development tasks in Bago and Mandalay Divisions on 7 February.

In meeting with farmers, the minister and party urged them to abide by estate rules and regulations in carrying out agricultural tasks.  

The minister and party then arrived at No 5 Sugar Mill at Myohla in Taungoo District, Bago Division. Officials explained operation of factory and future tasks. They then inspected the running of the mill.

Then, the minister and party inspected Chaung Magyi Dam (Myohla) project site and Director U Maung Maung Tin explained construction of the spillway of the main dam and the control tower.

Next, the minister and party arrived at No 4 Sugar mill in Taung Sin Aye and discussed purchase of sugar cane and transportation matters and inspected production process of sugar.

The minister and party in the afternoon proceeded to Yan Aung Myin Dam project site being undertaken by construction group 5 of Irrigation Department and inspected progress of works.

In the evening they arrived at Chaung Magyi Dam, one mile away from Kyet Suaing village in Pyinmana. The dam is being undertaken by the construction group-4 of the Irrigation Department. Later, the they inspected the design of the main dam and irrigating areas.


Title recipient artistes honoured

Yangon, 9 Feb — The  artistes on whom titles were conferred by the State Peace and Development Council were honoured by Myanmar Thabin Asiayon at a ceremony held at the Ahlon Township Hall on Hninzi Street in Ahlon Township this morning.

Minister for Culture Maj-Gen Kyi Aung attended the ceremony and presented cash and gifts to the title recipient artistes.

First, master of ceremonies Secretary of MTA (Central) U Aung Tin Win and Vice-Chairman U Ye Dwe explained the purpose of holding the ceremony.

Then, officials read out the biography of Excellent Performance in the Field of Arts Title (First Class) recipients Patron of MTA U Shwe Daung Nyo (a) U Nyan and Chairman U Sein Aung Min and Excellent Performance in Social Field (Second Class) Title recipient Vice-Chairman U Sein Hla Myaing. Later, Minister Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Deputy Minister U Soe Nyunt and Director-General U Kyaw Win presented cash and gifts to the title recipient artistes.


PBANRDA Minister attends work coordination meeting

Yangon, 9 Feb—Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt addressed the work coordination meeting of the ministry and departments being held at the meeting hall of Development Affairs Department on Thanhlyetson Road in Botahtaung Township this morning.

In his address, Minister Col Thein Nyunt said that the respective officials are to make an assessment of tasks they had already carried out and remedial measures had to be taken; that it was necessary to pay constant attention to  the successful implementation of the tasks assigned by the ministry; that proper tax is to be collected so as to be able to undertake the development measures and to effectively serve the interest of the taxpayers.  The respective development committees are implementing rural development tasks such as construction of bridges and roads and water supply facilities, and officials concerned had to make earnest efforts for timely completion of the tasks, he said. In addition, measures had to be taken for enabling the city dwellers to live with peace of mind in healthy environment. To ensure effective use of the machinery in implementing the tasks, maintenance work had to be taken for their durability, he said and urged officials to strive together in growing kitchen crops and to make field trips right down to grassroots level.

Then, Deputy Minister U Kyaw Tin gave instructions on development tasks and engineering measures. Next, the respective directors-general reported on progress of work in their relevant sectors. Afterwards, the respective directors reported to the minister on work being carried out in their regions, and the meeting ended in the afternoon. 


Union Day delegates visit downtown Yangon

Yangon, 9 Feb — The traditional cultural delegation members of States and Divisions and USDA member Union Day delegates who are here to attend the 56th Anniversary Union Day Ceremony visited Yangon downtown this morning.

At 8.30 am, they arrived at National Indoor Stadium-1 in Thuwunna. Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint extended greetings. General Secretary of MOC Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department U Thaung Htaik explained construction of playgrounds and gymnasiums.

Then, commemorative pennants were exchanged.

Next, athletes of Myanmar Martial Arts Federation, Myanmar Chinlon Federation, Myanmar Karatedo Federation, Myanmar Acrobats Federation and Myanmar Wushu Federation demonstrated sports skills.
In the afternoon, the study group members visited the  Union Day Exhibition at Tatmadaw Convention Hall on U Wisara Road. After exchanging commemorative pennants, the study group members had the documentary photo taken at the exhibition.


Minister inspects railroad section and Sittaung Bridge

Yangon, 9  Feb — Minister for Rail Transportation Maj-Gen Aung Min,  inspected along the railroad between Yangon and Theinzayat Stations by DRC yesterday morning.

The minister inspected maintenance of railroad section between Pazundaung and Mahlwagon Stations. He also inspected Ngamoeyeik Bridge and gave necessary instructions.

The minister and party arrived at Sittaung Bridge at 11.45 am. He inspected the bridge and repair of approach structures and left necessary instructions.


All private banks under supervision of Ministry of Finance & Revenue to continue to provide banking services with momentum for economic development of the State

Yangon, 9 Feb — A new year reception was hosted to entrepreneurs who are doing business with Asia Wealth Bank at Sedona Hotel on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road at 6 pm today.

At the reception, Vice-Chairman U Aik Tun said private banks including AWB, unlike economic services, are organized systematically according to rules and regulations of the Central Bank of Myanmar and the Financial Institutions of Myanmar Law. The private banks are firmly performing financial services under close supervision and with the backing of the CBM according to the law. Then, AWB Managing Director U Aung Zaw Naing explained that the private banks including AWB are carrying out banking services in accordance with stipulated financial strength in line with the rules, regulations and disciplines laid down by the Central Bank of Myanmar. Later, the guests were served with dinner.

In implementing the economic objectives of the State, all the private banks under the supervision of the Ministry of Finance and Revenue continue to undertake banking services with momentum for economic development of the State.


Talks on violence against women held 

Yangon, 9 Feb — Under the supervision of Myanmar Women Entrepreneurs Association, talks on violence against women were held at the office of MWEA in Dagon Township this morning.

MWEA founder Adviser Prof Daw Yi Yi Myint and Adviser Prof Daw Khin Aye Win gave talks on violence against women on the occasion. They then replied to the queries raised by those present.


Entries invited to 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commemorative Photo Competition

Yangon, 9 Feb — The 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commemorative Literary and Photo Competition Organizing Work Committee has already announced that it will hold the photo competition.

The titles of colour photo competitions are ‘Developing Myanmar’ and ‘Preserving Cultural Heritage’  and the four entries can be presented for each title. Entries must be print photos by the size of at least 10 by 12 inches. Those who won the first, second and third prizes in the previous years will be categorized into a separated group and there will be a great chance for new competitions.

Data and captions are to be described in a separate sheet of paper and to be attached to the entries. Entries must be won creation and must not be prize-winning works in any other competitions. handsome prizes will be presented to first, second and third prize winners as well as consolation prizes winners of each competitions.

The first, second and third prizes will be presented at the ceremony to mark the 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day to be held in Yangon on 27 March 2003. The consolation prizes will be presented at the Anniversary Armed Forces Day ceremonies at the respective military commands. Entries are to be send to Director U Tun Min of Information and Public Relations Department, 22-24, Pansodan Street, Yangon, before 14 February 2003.

Yangon, 9 Feb — Heads of the government departments hosted dinner to the members of traditional cultural troupes from states and divisions and USDA members, who are currently here to attend the 56th Anniversary Union Day ceremony, at their residences and presented gifts to them yesterday evening.

Union Solidarity and Development Association Central Executive Committee member Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung hosted dinner to the Union Day delegates from Kayin State at his residence and presented gifts to them.

Rural late rite road put into service in Kawa

Kawa-Htongyi Jetty rural late rite road was put into service in Kawa Township on 4 January. Township level officials formally opened the road. The 2,200 feet long late rite road was built at a cost of over K 1.5 million.

Tube-well opened in Magway

A ceremony to open the tube-well was held in Thamandaw (North) Village, Magway Township, on 17 January. Secretary of Township Union Solidarity and Development Association U Khin Maung Swe and officials opened the tube-well. Union of Myanma Economic Holdings Ltd donated K 500,000 for sinking the tube-well and workers of Magway Division and Township Development Affairs Committee sank it.

Respects paid to teachers in Yesagyo

Old students of Yesagyo Basic Education High School No 1 paid respects to teachers for the fifth time at the school on 14 January. OK Rice Brokerage owner U Nyein and Daw Ohn Kyin and family and other old students presented a bag of rice each and gifts to 55 teachers.

Wall magazine opened in Tachilek

Organized by Tachilek District Information and Public Relations Department, the opening of the wall magazine and photo show in conjunction with a talks on dynamism of patriotic spirit and flourishing and vitalization of Union Spirit was held at Panhat Village BEMS, Mongkoe Village-tract, Tachilek Township, on 15 January.

Nyaungdon BEHS No 2 gets laboratory

Hailing the 56th Anniversary Union Day, the laboratory of Nyaungdon Basic Education High School No 2 was opened at the school on 4 February. Officials presented certificates of honour to wellwishers. The local people have spent K 4.2 million including K 900,000 of the Ministry of Education on the construction of the lab.

Multiplier library science course concluded in Lashio

The multiplier library science course No 1/2003 concluded at the library of the Lashio District Information and Public Relations Department on 15 January. Lashio District Police Force Police Lt-Col Maung Kyaing and officials presented prizes to respective outstanding trainees.

Commander inspects kitchen crops and vegetables patches

Chairman of Mon State Peace and Development Council Commander of South-East Command Maj-Gen Thura Myint Aung inspected cultivation of kitchen crops and vegetables in Shangyi Village, Kyaikmaraw Township, on 19 January. Similarly, kitchen crops and vegetables are being grown in Kalaing Kanaing, Shanywagyi, Shanywalay, Changon, Myagon, Apaw, Alei, Mwehauk and Kyungon village of the township.

K 3m donated to building of monastic education

The cash donation for building of new school building of Monastic Education School in Zayangyi Village of Namhsan Township was held at the house of Ayeetaung on 68th Street in Mandalay on 30 January. Ayeetaung U Kyaw Thein-Daw Kywe Kywe donated K 3 million to Zayangyi Village Dana Parami Association Secretary U Aung Gyi.

Rice donated to members of the Sangha in Kyaiklat

Wellwishers offered 631 bags of rice to 1,210 members of the Sangha and 40 nuns at the Tazaung of Tilawka Marazein Pagoda in Kyaiklat Township on 1 February. Udaung Rice Mill owner U Kin Han-Daw Kyin Than and family donated K 100,000 for the funds of ‘soon’ to Pyapon District Peace and Development Council Secretary Maj Tin Htay.

Technological Advisory Committee for global leprosy elimination meets

Yangon, 9 Feb — The Technological Advisory Committee for the global leprosy elimination held a meeting at Sedona Hotel on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this morning.

The present situation in implementing global leprosy elimination and difficulties in works, medical check-up of leprosy disease, finding of patients, experience of Myanmar and effective treatment given to the patients were discussed. The meeting will continue tomorrow.


Drug

Drug traffickers sentenced

Yangon, 9 Feb — A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Tachilek Special Anti-Drug Squad, on 1 September 2002 seized 360 stimulants tablets from Lodo, 24, son of U Aerjay, at Lwesaton village of Haunglek Village-tract in Tachilek Township. Tachilek Police Station filed him under Section 15/19 (A) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

On 24 December, Tachilek District Court sentenced him to five years’ imprisonment under Section 15 and 15 years imprisonment under Section 19 (A) separately.

Similarly, a combined team comprising members of Yangon Anti-Drug Squad and local intelligence unit, acting on a tip-off, searched the house of That Naing Win (a) Kar Del of No 30, 4th floor, 121st Street, Ye Dwin Gon Ward, Mingala Taungnyunt Township on 29 June and discovered 191 stimulants tablets.

In connection with the case, Mingala Taungnyunt Police Station filed him under Section 15/19 (A) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

On 12 January 2002, Yangon East District Court handed down 20 years’ imprisonment on him under Section 19 (A).
