State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends condolences to ROK

Yangon, 19 Feb — Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of sympathy and condolences to His Excellency Mr Kim Dae Jung, President of the Republic of Korea, for the great loss of lives caused by a fire in a subway in Taegu.



Lt-Gen Ye Myint inspects regional development in Mandalay, Kyaukse

Yangon, 19 Feb— Member of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Ye Myint of the Ministry of Defence, Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint and officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office inspected regional development in Mandalay and Kyaukse Township on 18 February.

Lt-Gen Ye Myint, the commander and party, inspected construction of    Traditional Medicine University in Mandalay.

U Han Thein of ACE Construction Group reported on construction of the main building, lecture halls, practical rooms, supply of construction materials, funds and progress of work.

Pro rector U Ba Tun reported on courses to be conducted and organizational set-up of the university.

Lt-Gen Ye Myint gave instructions on construction of the university of high quality, planting of trees for greening and fire preventive measures. Lt-Gen Ye Myint and party, accompanied by Chairman of Kyaukse District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Aung Kyi Shein inspected construction of 200-bed hospital.

Acting Medical Superintendent Dr Thin Kyu Aye reported on background history of the hospital, extension of the hospital, treatment programmes and intensive care unit.

U Tun Tun of Olympic Construction Co reported on construction of the hospital. The commander and Chairman Lt-Col Aung Kyi Shein gave supplementary reports.

Lt-Gen Ye Myint inspected the site and gave instructions. Construction of the hospital started in November 2001. Over 80 per cent of the building have been completed.

Lt-Gen Ye Myint and party inspected construction of regulating dam in Kyaukse Township. Senior engineer U Tin Aung and engineer U Win Aung of Irrigation Department said the regulating dam, 138 feet long and 10 feet high, was built for one million gallons of drinking water to supply Kyaukse daily. It can store about 35 million gallons of water.

Executive Officer U Lay Lwin and senior engineer U Nay Oo of Development Affairs Department reported on water supply and laying of pipelines.

Lt-Gen Ye Myint gave instructions on coordination among departments and maintenance.

Lt-Gen Ye Myint and party went to the site for construction of new three-storey building of Kyaukse Government Technological College where Project Engineer U Tint Lwin reported on progress of work. Principal U Tin Aye also reported on the number of students and courses. Lt-Gen Ye Myint inspected teaching at the lecture halls and the site.

Lt-Gen Ye Myint and party proceeded to the project office of Hong Pang Co Ltd. The company is constructing Mandalay-Meiktila road section of the six-lane Yangon-Mandalay Highway.

Managing Director U Khin Maung Myint reported on work done and survey of the axis, paving of roads. The commander gave a supplementary report. Lt-Gen Ye Myint gave instructions on paving of the road before monsoon. Lt-Gen Ye Myint inspected paving of the  road. In the afternoon, Lt-Gen Ye Myint met industrialists at Kanaung Hall of the Industrial Zone-2 in Mandalay.

Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint reported on assistance provided for development of Mandalay Industrial Zone. The industrialists reported on progress, industrial exhibition to be held in Mandalay and machinery manufactured in Mandalay Industrial Zone. Lt-Gen Ye Myint said the industrial zones were established for expanding industries, creating job opportunities and development of Myanma industrial sector.

He spoke of the need for the industrialists to lay emphasis on their interest as well as development of Myanma industrial sector. 

He also reported on the high quality Super Mandala jeep, unity among the industrialists and the government’s assistance. 

Lt-Gen Ye Myint inspected a factory where fertilizer would be produced from sewage.

Lt-Gen Ye Myint and party inspected SMI construction materials factory and gave instructions.

   Taninthayi Division gaining gradual development in all sectors including economic and social fields

Yangon, 19 Feb — Member of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Maung Bo of the Ministry of Defence inspected development undertakings in Myeik and Kawthoung, Taninthayi Division, on 17 and 18 February.

In Myeik, he visited the oil palm farm of Kanbawza Oil Palm Cultivation Company. The company officials explained putting of 5,000 acres of land under oil palm, plans to extend 500 acres of the crops next year and future programmes. Chairman of Taninthayi Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Coastal Region Command Brig-Gen Tha Aye gave a supplementary report.

Lt-Gen Maung Bo spoke of the need to extend oil palm cultivation annually and to grow paddy as a mixed crop with the cooperation of the departmental personnel.

An engineer of Pyisone Construction also explained the Myeik-Taninthayi-Bokpyin-Kawthoung Road Project.

After observing the road, Lt-Gen Maung Bo arrived at Laynya-Mandaing river bridge on Mandaing bank. The bridge is located on Myeik-Kawthoung section.

At the briefing hall, he heard a report on progress in building the bridge which will be 860 feet long and 30 feet wide, with a 24-foot motorway.

He spoke of the need to build the facility in accord with the set standard, ensure timely arrival of construction materials and heavy equipment and worksite safety, and make efforts for soonest completion of conduits and other small bridges on the road. He observed the thriving oil palm trees and visited regional battalions and units along Myeik-Taninthayi-Bokpyin-Kawthoung road.

During inspection of a retaining wall under construction at a place between Kawthoung Myoma Bridge and Bayintnaung Bridge, and greening work along Kawthoung port, he gave instructions to officials concerned. The wall is being built to prevent erosion at Kawthoung bank.

At Kawthoung District Peace and Development Council Office, Lt-Gen Maung Bo met with departmental personnel, social organizations and local elders.

He said according to the presentation of the officials, the division is gaining gradual development in all sectors including economic and social fields. But all are required to make harmonious efforts for achieving further progress and for making Taninthayi Division the oil bowl of the State. Paddy cultivation must be extended to ensure regional food sufficiency.

The departments will have to provide assistance to the national entrepreneurs to set up farming businesses in the region. In addition to oil palm, rice and rubber, pepper cultivation should be extended in Taninthayi Division, which is an important region of the nation. As the division is bordering a neighbouring country, all should stay away from doing acts that may lead to tarnishing the country’s image in the bilateral relations of the two countries. All will have to strive harmoniously for regional development. The commander and officials of the respective bodies also presented reports on respective sectors at the meeting.

Yangon, 19 Feb — Minister for Health Professor Dr Kyaw Myint received Ambassador of Britain to Myanmar Ms Victoria Jane Bowman at his office on Pyidaungsu Yeiktha Street in Dagon Township at 2 pm yesterday.

On 17 February  the minister  received Adviser to the prevention of iodine deficiency task force of UNICEF Mr David Page Haxton at his office.


Information Minister receives guests

Yangon, 19 Feb — Minister for Information Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan received Mr Koji Chino, Film Director, Producer and Scriptwriter of Japan at his office here this afternoon.

They discussed shooting of film “Thway”, a novel by Journalkyaw Ma Ma Lay. Also present were Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Managing Director of the Myanma Motion Picture Enterprise U Bo Kyi, and Adviser to the ministry U Kyaw Min. 

Country Manager of Galaxy Automation Company Limited Mr Bob Goh and party also called on Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan at the latter’s  office at 3.45 pm today.

Japanese classical music concert staged  

Yangon, 19 Feb — Japanese classical music concert, organized by Myanmar Japan Relations Centre and Ensemble Kochi music band of Japan, took place at the National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung Street here this evening.

Among the audience were Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt and officials, Japanese Ambassador Mr Juji Miyamoto and wife, MJRC Chairman Mr Watannabe and guests.  


Bio-mass power plant opened for rural development

Yangon, 19 Feb — Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West Command Maj-Gen Htay Oo and Minister for Cooperatives Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe attended the opening of the paddy husk-fired power plant of Hleseik Village General Enterprises Cooperative Society held at the basic education high school in the village on 16 February.

The commander and the minister made speeches at the ceremony. The minister donated cash and exercise books to the school. Deputy Director U Thein Shwe of Ayeyawady Division Cooperative Department and Chairman Lt-Col Hla Thwin of Pathein District Peace and Development Council formally opened the plant. Then, the commander and minister inspected round the plant. Afterwards, the minister inspected the guest house of Ayeyawady Thiri General Enterprise Cooperative Society in Yekyi, and undertakings of Kyauksein Hsin Rattan and Bamboo Pro-ducts Cooperative Society in Ngathainggyoung.

On 17 February, the minister inspected the crops fields of Gaungsaykyun Agricultural Cooperative Society in Hinthada. The chairman and officials of the cooperative society reported to the minister on cultivation of maize  and sunflower. The minister gave necessary instructions. Then, the minister inspected the brokerage house and general store of Hinthada Township Cooperative Society. Afterwards, the minister attended the meeting between the staff officers and chairmen of cooperative societies in Hinthada and Maubin Districts. Officials of Ayeyawady Division Cooperative Department and Cooperative Export and Import Enterprise reported to the minister on work plans. The minister attended to the requirements. Afterwards, the minister inspected the vehicles of Aung Sidaw Transportation Cooperative Society in Zalun.

Then, the minister met with the directors of Kyaw Agricultural Cooperative Society, Aung Thiha Agricultural Cooperative Society and Nay Htet Lin Agricultural Cooperative Society in May Yilan Village and gave necessary instructions. The minister also inspected the dispensary of Mya Ayeya Cooperative Society in Danubyu. Afterwards, the minister met with the directors of Ngwe Lamin General Enterprise Cooperative Society and gave necessary instructions.


Coop Minister tours Ayeyawady Division

Yangon, 19 Feb — Minister for Cooperatives Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, accompanied by departmental personnel on 15 February went to Pathein, Ayeyawady Division and inspected progress in construction of the cooperative training school and computer room and gave necessary instructions.

Then, the minister presented cash donation to Day Care Nursery of Kaung Cooperatives Ltd and attended the opening ceremony of the clinic and delivery room of Ayeyawady Division Cooperatives Syndicate. Then, the minister met with board of directors, staff officers of Pathein, Myaungmya and Pyapon Districts and  chairmen of cooperative society and gave instructions to them. The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the minister.


Lt-Gen Maung Bo attends opening of multimedia classrooms at Myeik BEHS-2

Yagnon, 19 Feb — Member of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Maung Bo of the Ministry of Defence, inspected construction tasks and attended the opening of the multimedia classrooms of No 2 Basic Education High School in Myeik, Taninthayi Division, on 16 February.

In the afternoon, Lt-Gen Maung Bo and party inspected Kalwin section, part of Myeik Circular Road Construction Project, Kandawgyi Ring Road and Kangyiyat Stone Wall Construction Project, expansion of Strand Road, and construction of Myothit Bridge and the stone dyke against Phayakaing Creek. Then, Lt-Gen Maung Bo attended the opening of the multimedia classrooms of Myeik BEHS No 2.

The outstanding students formally unveiled the billboard bearing the words “Myanmar Education Goal” and “Build a Modern Develop Nation Through Education”. Afterwards, the headmistress and the chairman of the school board trustees formally opened the classrooms. Lt-Gen Maung Bo pressed the button to unveil the signboard to mark the opening ceremony.

Later, Lt-Gen Maung Bo and party and guests viewed the multimedia classrooms. Next, the opening of multimedia classrooms and handing over of the new two-storey building followed. The headmistress and the chairman of the school board of trustees reported on endeavours made for opening of the classrooms and the new building.

Afterwards, the headmistress handed over documents related to the building to Deputy Director-General of No 1 Basic Education Department U C Thaung Za Tuan, who then explained facts about the long-term education plan. Commander Brig-Gen Tha Aye delivered a speech, saying that the opening of the classrooms could be held with the cooperation of the school board of trustees and townselders and the donations of wellwishers. He called on the students to regularly study the lessons in practice at the classrooms, the township and division education officers, to supervise the education tasks, and townselders, wellwishers and the school board of trustees, to participate in implementing education promotion projects.

Then, Lt-Gen Maung Bo said that now is the knowledge age for science and technologies were advancing speedily in the international sphere, and they could be widely applied for the development of socio-economy with the use of information and communication technology. In basic sector of education, students were being nurtured and trained with the aim of ensuring uplift of national prestige and integrity and preservation and safeguarding of cultural heritage and national characters and vitalization of patriotism. Moreover, in higher education sector, efforts were being made to open doctoral courses, and necessary courses in region-wise under the programme of the Centres for Human Resources Development. He added that it was expected to turn out new generation youths who will successfully carry out tasks on development of the nation and perpetuation of sovereignty by promoting education standard in respective human resources development sectors and by training youths to possess good characteristics of a good citizen.

The government, in striving for the development of the nation, had already launched e-Education System to enable the students in the country to get equal opportunity in pursuing education.

In promoting Myanmar education standard, multimedia teaching centres have been opened in basic and higher education sectors in harmony. He said he hoped  that with facilities provided at the school, systematic training of teachers and zealous endeavours of the students, good and qualified youths with caliber of international education standard will turn out. In conclusion, he urged the parents, teachers and students to make collective efforts  for turning out outstanding intellectuals and intelligentsia in line with the aims of educational goal of the State in building up the country into a modern and developed one.

After the ceremony, Lt-Gen Maung Bo and party posed for a group photo together with members of the board of trustees of the school, teachers and students.

Later, Lt-Gen Maung Bo and party inspected the upgrading of entrance road of Myeik airport by expanding it from two-lane road into four-lane one. He also inspected poultry farm of Coastal Region Command in Myeik livestock breeding zone. He met with livestock breeders and fulfilled the requirements. The Myeik livestock breeding zone was established in February 2001.  Over 29,000 chicken, 1,400 ducks, 133 pigs and 3,000 fish were being bred up to 12-2-2003.


Lt-Gen Maung Bo attends opening of Pyidawaye Sasana Beikmandawgyi in Kawthoung

Yangon, 19 Feb — The opening and merit sharing ceremony of Sasana Beikmandawgyi in Kaw-thoung, Taninthayi Division, was held at the Beikmandawgyi on 18 February morning.

Member of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Maung Bo of the Ministry of Defence attended the ceremony and opened the Beikmandawgyi.

The opening ceremony of Pyidawaye Sasana Beikmandawgyi was started with three-time recitation of Namo Tassa. Chairman of the work committee for construction of the Beikmandawgyi Chairman of Kawthoung District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Kyaw Phyo reported on construction of the Beikmandawgyi.

Then, Lt-Gen Maung Bo formally unveiled the stone inscription of the Beikmandawgyi and sprinkled with scented water it. Afterwards, Lt-Gen Maung Bo and Commander Brig-Gen Tha Aye opened the Beikmandawgyi. Then, the merits sharing ceremony was held at the Beikmandawgyi. Kaw-thoung Aungchantha-kyaung Presiding Nayaka Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pan-ñasami administered the Nine Precepts to the congregation and members of the Sangha recited the parittas.

Next, Lt-Gen Maung Bo supplicated on religious affairs. Then, Lt-Gen Maung Bo, Commander Brig-Gen Tha Aye, Minister Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, officials and wellwishers presented offertories to the Sayadaw and members of the Sangha. Then, Commander Brig-Gen Tha Aye handed over the documents related to the Beikmandawgyi to Kawthoung Township Sangha Nayaka Committee Chairman Bhaddanta Pamaukkha.  Later, Presiding Nayaka Sayadaw Bhaddanta Panñasami delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of the merits gained.

After the ceremony, the commander and the minister performed the rituals of golden and silver showers.


Lt-Gen Aung Htwe inspects Seikkhaung-Ponchaung railroad and bridge

Yangon, 19 Feb — Member of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Aung Htwe of the Ministry of Defence, inspected the layers and pigs farm being raised by the Homein region development affairs committee near Namkok Village in Hopong Township on 16 February.

Farm in-charge U Win Htay reported on raising of 40,000 layers and 70 pigs and distribution of eggs and pigs in the region. Lt-Gen Aung Htwe fulfilled the requirements.

Then, Lt-Gen Aung Htwe and party arrived at Seikkhaung Station where they met with state level departmental officials, the chairman of the Hsihseng Township Peace and Development Council and township level departmental officials. At the meeting, Lt-Gen Aung Htwe gave instructions on tasks to be carried out for the development of the agricultural works; for the smooth transportation; for food sufficiency in the region and cultivation of cold season crops and other crops on commercial scale; and for all-round  development of the region in accord with the five rural development tasks.

Then, Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Myint reported on tasks being carried out for food sufficiency and development of the region, and Minister Maj-Gen Aung Min on construction of Namsang-Seikkhaung railroad.

Then, Lt-Gen Aung Htwe inspected Seikkhaung Station and Taunggyi-Seikkhaung railroad and gave necessary instructions. Next, Lt-Gen Aung Htwe and party inspected construction of railroad near Pyinthaya Village in Hsihseng Township. Deputy Minister for Rail Transportation U Pe Than reported on tasks being carried out.

Then, Brig-Gen Sein Lin of the Ministry of Defence reported on construction of Seikkhaung-Ponchaung section of Seikkhaung-Namsang railroad, Acting Tactical Operations Commander Lt-Col Khin Maung Hla on tasks being carried out at 50.62 mile on Seikkaung-Ponchaung section; construction of 17 bridges by Myanma Railway out of 99 bridges between Seikkhaung and Ponchaung and digging of 1.7 million of pits, and Deputy Minister U Pe Than on providing assistance by the MR. Maj-Gen Aung Min presented supplementary reports. Lt-Gen Aung Htwe gave instructions and attended to the requirements.

In the afternoon, Lt-Gen Aung Htwe and party inspected the construction of Seikkhaung-Ponchaung railroad section, construction of bridges by the state Union Solidarity and Development Association, Myanma Railways, Yadana Tun Co and Golden Moon Co and gave instructions on meeting the set standard.

Lt-Gen Aung Htwe and party inspected the railroad construction near Ponlaung Village in Hsihseng Township. 

Then, Lt-Gen Aung Htwe arrived at Ponchaung Bridge construction project. At the briefing hall, Brig-Gen Sein  Lin of the Ministry of Defence reported on condition of railroad construction  between Ponchaung and Namsang and future plans, Deputy General Manager of the project U Tin Soe on progress of earth work. Then, Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Myint reported on construction of 99 bridges between Seikkhaung and Ponchaung including Ponchaung Bridge  and construction of 191 bridges— 46 by Myanma Railways and 145 by Loilem District Peace and Development Council between Ponchaung and Namsang. Chairman of Taunggyi District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Ye Tun Sein reported on construction of 60 bridges by departments, social organizations and private entrepreneurs among 99 bridges on Seikkhaung-Ponchaung, Loilem District Peace and Development Council Chairman Lt-Col Myint Tin on construction of 145 bridges on Ponchaung-Namsang section by departments, social organizations and private entrepreneurs.

Next, Lt-Gen Aung Htwe gave instruction on meeting the set standard and completion of the bridges.

Out of 8.2 million pits,  2.384 million pits have been completed, out of 103 miles of earth work, 59 miles have been carried out, out of 61,800 pits of pebble, 61,827 pits have been collected, out of 238,136 sleepers, 141,903 have been collected, out of 28,428 rails, 12,753 rails have been collected, out of 103 miles of railroads, 38.49 miles of railroads have been completed. When Seikkhaung-Namsang railroad completes, secure and smooth transport for goods and regional economy in Shan State (South) will develop.


Lt-Gen Aung Htwe inspects Ponchaung-Namsang railroad and bridge

Yangon, 19 Feb — Member of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Aung Htwe of the Ministry of Defence, inspected construction of Ponchaung-Namsang railroad on 17 February morning and gave instructions on completion of railroad construction tasks as soon as possible.

Afterwards, Lt-Gen Aung Htwe inspected construction of a bridge being carried out by Maukmai Township Peace and Development Council. After hearing reports presented by in-charge of the railroad construction project Executive Engineer U Than Win, Lt-Gen Aung Htwe gave instructions on meeting the set standards.

At the briefing hall, Brig-Gen Sein Lin reported to Lt-Gen Aung Htwe on construction of the railroad sections by Tatmadawmen, availability and use of machinery, completion of axis finding works, and  designated places for construction of bridges with the use of chart. Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Myint and Minister Maj-Gen Aung Min also gave supplementary reports.

Lt-Gen Aung Htwe gave instructions on construction of the railroad and bridges on the axis, supply of machinery, installation of railroads on completed embankment and completion of Manseik bridge before the rainy season. Afterwards, Lt-Gen Aung Htwe inspected along the railroad.


Transport Minister tours Kawthoung

Yangon, 19 Feb — Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe inspected extension of Tawwin Bridge of the Myanmar Port Authority on 17-2-2003 morning.

Then, he  also saw over Kawthoung Port and ships of  Myanmar Five Star Line.

Thence, he went to the construction site of retaining wall between Myoma Bridge and Bayintnaung Bridge. Then, the minister inspected the progress of work and attended to the needs. In the afternoon, the minister inspected to Kawthoung Airport.


Minister inspects irrigation networks in Ayeyawady Division

Yangon, 19 Feb— Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin and officials inspected Panhlaing sluice gate in Nyaungdon Township, maintenance of the sluice gates, proper drainage and irrigation to wetlands for cultivation of summer paddy on 17 February.

The minister discussed full cultivation of summer paddy, production of crops in accord with rules and regulations, maintenance of farmlands and prohibition  against building houses on the embankment in meeting with Ayeyawady and Yangon Division Agriculture Coordination Committees.

The minister and party inspected summer paddy fields in Kyaunggon Township. The minister met departmental officials and farmers and discussed availability of water, storage of water and double cropping. The minister and party went to the site of Kanyin Dam Project near Tatkon Village in Ingapu Township. Deputy Director U Kyaw Myint Hlaing reported on flow of water, water storage, earth embankment project, cleaning the lands and construction of the concrete wall and Director-General of Irrigation Department U Kyaw San Win reported on requirements and schedules for the project.

The minister fulfilled the requirements and laid down the tasks of the project. The Kanyin Dam will be built on Kanyin Creek for irrigation of 25,000 acres of land.

The minister and party inspected Ma Mya Dam project site in Hnyinpar-taung region in Myanaung Township for development of west region of the Ayeyawady River. Director of Construction-9 reported on embankment on the concrete wall and construction of the tower and spillways. The minister met the director-general of Irrigation Department and construction engineers and discussed irrigation networks, availability of water in the townships in Ayeyawady Division in summer and reduction of flow of water into wetlands in monsoon.

The minister inspected construction process of the project. Ma Mya Dam project aims to irrigate 10,000 acres of farmlands in monsoon and the dam will prevent the region from flooding. The minister and party arrived at the site of Kon Creek-2 Dam Project in Kyangin Township where Director of Construction-2 U Tin Maung Ohn reported on progress of work and supply of machinery.

After inspecting the construction of the main dam, spillways, tower, conduit pipe, sluice gates and flow of water into the dam. The minister inspected maintenance of embankment along the Ayeyawady River from Myanaung to Shwekyin and Kazunkhon river water pumping project which will irrigate 5,000 acres of farmlands. Head of Ayeyawady Division Water Resources Utilization Department U Htay Lwin and Director-General of WRUD U Win Shwe reported on installation the main pumps and duration of the implementation of the project. The minister discussed extension of irrigated areas and double cropping.

The minister and party went to Ngapiseik region in Myanaung Township. The minister gave instructions and inspected the main canal. The minister discussed availability of water, double cropping, rural development tasks and early implementation of the project and cooperation in meeting with the farmers.


Agricultural work in Ayeyawady Division inspected

Yangon, 19 Feb — Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin yesterday morning met industrial entrepreneurs of Hinthada Industrial Zone and members of Agriculture Service Coordination Committees of Ayeyawady Division and Hinthada District at Irrigation Yeiktha in Hinthada and explained industrial development, providing technical assistance in production of farm machinery, irrigation of farmlands in townships, cultivation of summer paddy and cold season double and mixed crops and maintenance of embankments.

Hinthada District Peace and Development Council Chairman Lt-Col Maung Pyone reported on  industrial production in the district and the entrepreneurs on their respective tasks and the minister gave them necessary instructions.

Next, the minister and party at Zalun Port, inspected maintenance of embankment around Ayeyawady River bank and flow of water.  The minister gave instructions on seeking ways to prevent embankments against erosion after hearing the reports by the director-general and directors of the Irrigation Department.

The minister then saw over cultivation of black gram, sunflower and thriving of other crops around Danubay Village in Zalun township. Myanma Agriculture Service Managing Director conducted the minister round there. The minister met with farmers and urged them to cultivate quality strains and to use machinery and fertilizers in agricultural activities.

After that, the minister also inspected cultivation and thriving of crops at Tamya Village, where he was conducted round by divisional manager U Hla Myo. Farmers reported to the minister that due to cultivation of black gram and sunflower seeds as double and mixed crops, there is enough edible oil for every family in every village and 15 viss of sunflower oil can be obtained per acre.

The minister went to the jute mill in Danubyu where the manager and an official of Maubin Zone reported on production and cultivation of jute. The minister laid down future plans.

Later, the minister inspected distribution of water by using pumps at Lamutan river water-pumping project of Water Resources Utilization Department on Kokko river in Htantabin Township and summer paddy cultivation.


Myanmar National Women’s Affairs Committee meets

Yangon, 19 Feb — The Myanmar National Committee for Women’s Affairs held its coordination meeting No 1/2003 at the meeting hall of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement in Mayangon Township yesterday afternoon.

The Chairman of MNCWA Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa delivered a speech on the occasion.

Secretary of the Working Committee Police Brig-Gen Tin Win and Secretary of MNCWA Director-General of the Social Welfare Department U Sit Myaing reported on tasks carried out by respective working committees; leaders of subcommittees, on their respective sectors; and Vice-Chairperson of Myanmar National Working Committee for Women’s Affairs Professor Dr Daw May May Yi, on holding third Myanmar national women’s conference, followed by a general round of discussions.

The meeting ended with closing remarks by the minister.


Minister Brig-Gen Thein Zaw tours Bagan-NyaungU

Yangon, 19 Feb —  Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen Thein Zaw, together with officials, inspected the site for hotel zone in Bagan-NyaungU, Mandalay Division, on 16 February.

Then, the minister met with officials of Union of Myanmar Hoteliers Association and Union of Myanmar Travel Association at Bagan Hotel and gave instructions on forming the regional organizations and development of works.

In the afternoon, the minister received Regional Director Mr Mark F Badingham of Moet-Hennessy Co Ltd at the guest house of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications in NyaungU.

Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Thein Zaw, inspected Chauk auto-exchange and Magway auto-exchange in Magway Division on 17 February and gave necessary instructions.

The minister paid homage to Aungmyinzeya Pagoda in Taunggyi on yesterday. Then he inspected auto-exchanges in Taungdwingyi and Aunglan. The minister also inspected Mingala Garden Hotel in Pyay and microwave station in Thayawady.


Shwepaukkan and North Okkalapa industrial zones’ products inspected

Yangon, 19 Feb — Incharge of Shwepaukkan and North Okkalapa Industrial zones Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, arrived at management office of Shwe-paukkan Industrial Zone this afternoon and viewed products — in-door decorations made up of steel, import substitute agricultural machinery, paints and pharmaceuticals— manufactured by the industrial zone which will be displayed in Mandalay Industrial Exhibition-2003.

The minister gave instructions on manufacturing of quality products and marketing. Then, the minister and party proceeded to North Okkalapa Township Industrial Zone management office and viewed sewing machines, spare parts of agricultural machinery, electronic equipment and plastic wares manufactured by the industrial zone.


Ministry of Health holds coordination meeting

Yangon, 19 Feb — The third four-monthly coordination meeting 2002 of the Ministry of Health was held at the meeting hall of Medical Research Department (Lower Myanmar) on Ziwaka Road in Dagon Township this morning.

Minister for Health Prof Dr Kyaw Myint attended the meeting and made an opening speech.

At the meeting, Minister Prof Dr Kyaw Myint made an opening speech.

He said under the guidance of the Head of State, the Ministry of Health is implementing the national health projects and successes are being achieved; and heads of the Health Departments from states and divisions are urged to go to and fulfil the requirements of the station hospitals and rural health care centres. Then, Deputy Minister Prof Dr Mya Oo made a speech.

Afterwards, directors-general, deputy directors-general and those present reported on tasks of their respective sectors being carried out, and a general round of discussions followed.

The meeting ended with closing remarks by the minister.


Military Codes of Conduct and Extempore Talks Contest (Central Level) held

Yangon, 19 Feb — The opening ceremony of Central level  Military Codes of Conduct and Extempore Talks Contests to mark the 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day was held at the hall of Yangon Command this morning.

At the ceremony, Maj-Gen Maung Nyo delivered an opening address. After the opening ceremony, central level military codes of conduct contest was held at Aung San Hall in Mayangon Township, extempore talks contest held at Headquarters of Myanmar War Veterans Organization and Yannyeinaye Hall on Parami Road in Mayangon Township.

Military Codes of Conduct and extempore talks (Central Level) contests were divided into four categories each and it will continue till 23 February.


Orthopaedic and facial surgery performed

Yangon, 19 Feb — Acting Director of the Directorate of Medical Services of the Ministry of Defence Col Than Aung this morning visited patients at the Defence Services Orthopaedic Hospital (500-bed) including 48 patients who had  undergone orthopaedic and facial surgery.

A team of orthopaedic and facial surgeons led by Commandant Lt-Col Tun Tun of the hospital and adviser Prof U Thet Hta Wai, and a four-member team comprising doctors from France, Belgium and Italy have jointly performed surgery at the hospital starting from 3 February.  They have performed facial and oral surgery, orthopaedic surgery, and others.

The operations have proved successful, and situation of the patients have improved.


Ministry of Labour holds  meeting

Yangon, 19 Feb — Third four-monthly coordination meeting for 2002 of  the Ministry of Labour was held at Ahlon Main Medical Depot of the Social Security Board in Ahlon Township yesterday morning.

It was attended by Deputy Minister for Labour Brig-Gen Win Sein and officials. First, responsible officials reported on their respective tasks. Then, the directors-general also presented their respective tasks. 


Myanmar Rice Millers’ Association branch formed in Kyauktan

Yangon, 19 Feb — Kyauktan Township branch of Myanmar Rice Millers’ Association was formed yesterday morning at the hall of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading in Kyauktan.

Chairman U Win Myint, Manager Maj Maung Maung Tint and Chairman U Than Aung made speeches. Member of the township branch U Tun Hlaing read out the list of executives and the list was approved.

Buddha Pujaniya of Yan Myo Aung Pagoda held in Gangaw

The Buddha Pujaniya of Zabu Hteikkhaung Yan Myo Aung Pagoda was held in conjunction with the third Maha Pathana recitation ceremony at the prayer hall of the pagoda in Gangaw Township on 15 January. Then, wellwishers donated lights and flowers to the pagoda and offered provisions to members of the Sangha.

Rural gravel road put into service in Kyaukpyu

A ceremony to put into service the rural gravel road was held in Hnanphetaung Village, Kyaukpyu Township, on 9 February. Chairman of Kyaukpyu District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Hla Tin and officials formally opened the road. The road, 2,400 feet long and 12 feet wide, was built at a cost of K 2,026,000 by Township Development Affairs Committee and K 896,280 by local people.

Stone inscription unveiled at Loikaw BEMS No 5

The unveiling ceremony of the stone inscription bearing Myanma education goal and the signboard bearing to build a modern and developed nation through education was held at Basic Education Middle School No 5 in Loikaw Township on 30 January. Cultivation of summer paddy discussed in Katha

Katha Township Peace and Development Council Chairman U Tin Nu and Township Agriculture Service Manager U Min Aung went a field trip to rural areas on 6 and 7 February. They met local farmers and discussed cultivation of summer paddy.

Cyclist U Pyu arrives in Loikaw

Hailing the World No Tobacco Day which falls on 31 May, U Pyu, who is going to States and Divisions by bicycle, arrived in Loikaw of Kayah State from Taunggyi of Shan State on 1 February. Cyclist U Pyu started his journey from Sittway of Rakhine State on 10 November 2002 and arrived in Loikaw through Magway Division, Chin State, Sagaing Division, Shan State (North), Mandalay Division and Shan State (South) via Taunggyi. Officials of Kayah State Peace and Development Council, Union Solidarity and Development Association and Kayah State Sports and Physical Education Committee presented a certificate of honour and cash prize to U Pyu.


1.14 kilos of marijuana seized in Kyaukme

Yangon, 19 Feb — A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and local police force, acting on a tip-off, on 24 January searched Dan Bahadu (a) Kwet Lay at the corner of Sao San Tun Road and Thrimingala Road, Ward-2,  in Kyaukme, and seized 1.14 kilos of marijuana hidden in the bamboo.

Action is being taken against Dan Bahadu (a) Kwet Lay, 39, son of U Kalu Sint, of Panlong Village, Kywegon Village-tract, Kyaukme Township, under Section 15/19 (A)/ 20 (A) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by the police station concerned.
