Princess Sirindhorn to visit Myanmar

Yangon, 7 March — At the invitation of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of the Kingdom of Thailand will pay a royal visit to the Union of Myanmar in the near future.

Yangon, 6  March— Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt received Project Director Mr Stephen Brookes of the Washington Times  of the United States of America at Zeyathiri Beik-man Hall of Konmyint-tha here at 5 pm today.

MWVO COC Chairman meets Yangon Division, District  and Township WVOs

Yangon, 6 March — Chairman of Myanmar War Veterans Organization Central Organizing Committee Member of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Thein Sein met with members of Yangon Division, District and Township WVO Supervisory Committees and chairmen and secretaries of Township WVOs at the meeting hall of MWVO Headquarters on Pyay Road in Mayangon Township this afternoon.

Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Thein Sein elaborated on the purpose of forming the central organizing committee and its organization set-up, conditions of the five tasks being implemented under the guidance of Patron of MVWO Central Organizing Committee Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe, and functions and the seven future tasks of MWVO.

Division WVO (Yangon City area) Supervisory Committee Member of Yangon City Development Committee Col Tin Soe reported on organizing measures taken by Township WVOs and future tasks and Division WVO Supervisory Committee (outside Yangon City area)  Secretary Captain Sein Whet (Retd), on work progress. The meeting came to a close with concluding remarks by the Adjutant-General.

Commander inspects agriculture tasks

Yangon, 6 March —  Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council Commander of Eastern Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Myint, inspected the soil preparation works for cultivation of 50 acres of summer paddy  and  cultivation of winter crops including garlic and potato  in Zeya Ayechan Farm in Heho, Kalaw Township, on 3 March afternoon and gave instructions on taking measures for local rice sufficiency. Kalaw Township put 1050 acres of land under garlic and 2060 acres under potato. Per acre yield of garlic in the township is somewhere between 1,000 and 1,600 viss  and that of potato is between 4,500 and 5,000 viss.


Commander inspects Kyansittha column

Yangon, 6 March — Chairman of Management Committee for Observance of 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Myint Swe this afternoon inspected the hostels of Kyansittha Column which will take part in the Armed Forces Day parade  and gave necessary instructions.

The commander arrived at the  local battalion in South Okkalapa Township at 2 pm. He was welcomed there by Parade Commander Brig-Gen Than Htay, Reserve Parade Commander Brig-Gen Myint Aung, Column Commander Col Tha Aung and senior Tatmadaw officers. The commander gave necessary instructions to officers of Kyansittha Column after inspecting the practising parade drill of the column at the parade grounds. Then, the commander inspected the barracks, the kitchens, dinning halls, shops and communications unit of the parade companies conducted by Column Commander Col Tha Aung and officials. The commander left necessary instructions.


Livestock breeding tasks inspected

Yangon, 6 March — Yangon City Development Committee Chairman Mayor U Ko Lay, Joint-Secretary U Kyi Win, Member Col Tin Soe and officials inspected the wetland livestock breeding farm being undertaken by YCDC in Kyaikthalekwin, Twantay Township, this morning.

At the briefing hall of the farm, officials reported on extended farming, future tasks and exceeding the target in 2002-2003 fiscal year.

The mayor then looked into the breeding of fish, prawns, pigs and poultry and presented cash awards to the employees. The mayor gave necessary instructions to the officials.


Minister for Finance and Revenue inspects Customs Department

Yangon, 6 March — Minister for Finance and Revenue Maj-Gen Hla Tun, inspected the  Headquarters of the Customs Department on Strand Road this evening. Director General Col Khin Maung Lin and officials of the Customs Department briefed the minister on the services of the department. The minister gave necessary instructions after inspecting the work site. Minister Maj-Gen Hla Tun then met the officers of the Customs Department and gave direction. He later inspected training school and branches of the Customs Department.


Management multiplier course of USDA opens

Yangon, 6 March — The opening ceremony of the Management Multiplier Course No 2 for Executives organized by Yangon North District Union Solidarity and Development Association was held at the office of Hmawby Township USDA this afternoon.

Central Executive Committee member of USDA Yangon Division in-charge Col Tin Hlaing and CEC member Brig-Gen Ohn Myint made speeches at the ceremony. Then, the central executive committee members accepted the cash donations of wellwishers. Col Tin Hlaing then handed over the donations for the libraries of USDAs to Secretary of Yangon North District USDA U Kyi Maung. A total of 80 trainees are attending the two-week course.


Commerce Ministry Booth inspected

Yangon, 6 March — Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone this afternoon visited the Defence Services Museum on Shwedagon Pagoda Road here where he inspected the 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day commemorative booths of the ministry. The minister looked into the display of books published by the ministry, documentary photos,  border trade tasks and scale models on production process of rice mills and oil mills of the ministry. He also inspected the ministry’s booths in the nation-building endeavours and the twelve objectives sections.


Minister inspects locomotive shed (Ywahtaung)

Yangon, 6 March — Minister for Rail Transportation Maj-Gen Aung Min, together with Deputy Minister U Pe Than and officials, inspected the diesel locomotive shed (Ywahtaung) on 4 March morning.

At the hall of the locomotive shed, an officials reported on the main tasks of the shed, work progress, manpower and construction of DMU carriages with the use of charts. The minister then inspected the production process and left necessary instructions. The minister met with the personnel at the hall of the shed and gave instructions on providing spare parts and efforts to be made for ensuring timely completion of the main tasks and the projects. He said that Yangon-Mandalay railroad and Yangon circular railroad will be upgraded. He added that in the process efforts are to be made with a sense of providing transportation services to the people. In conclusion, the minister spoke of the need for the staff to prevent accidents and to carry out tasks in unison.


Information Minister inspects printing presses for sub-printing house

Yangon, 6 March— Minister for Information Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, arrived at Asia World jetty in Ahlon Township this afternoon and viewed loading of two printing presses on board a freight wagon. The machines are for  Myitkyina Sub-printing House in Kachin State. The printing presses arrived at the jetty on 4 March on board  MV Kota Sabas from Japan. The minister gave necessary instructions on timely transportation, systematization and supervision of the officials. The presses were imported from Shinohara Shojikk Co of Japan. They are of Shinohara 66 Heavy Duty Sheetfed Singlecolour Offset presses. Arrangements are being made for publishing the dailies in Myitkyina as a gesture to hail the 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day.


Parade columns entertained

Yangon, 6 March — Under the supervision of the Directorate of Public Relations and Psychological Warfare,  Tatmadaw Television Unit, No 1 Mobile Public Relations Unit and Myanma Motion Picture Enterprise entertained the parade columns which will take part in the 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Parade with music and movies at the respective  columns yesterday evening. Myawady and Aung San Columns were entertained with anyeint, songs and dances at Kyaikkasan Grounds, Bandoola Column at Defence Services Orthopaedic Hospital (500-bed); Anawrahta, Aungzeya and Bayintnaung columns at No 1 Transit Centre (Bayintnaung) and Nawaday Column at Ayeyawady Naval Regional Command Headquarters and Sinbyushin columns at Mingaladon Station with movies. Column Commanders, commanding officers, senior military officers and other ranksm of the columns enjoyed the entertainments.


Armed Forces Day commemorative computer quiz opens

Yangon, 6 March — The 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day commemorative computer quiz organized by the Twelve Objectives of the State Exhibition Booth was opened at the Directorate of Defence Services Museum and Historical Research Institute on Shwedagon Pagoda Road in Dagon Township this morning. First, Vice-Chairman of the Committee for Holding the 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commemorative Literary and Art Competition and Exhibition Chief of Staff (Navy) Rear Admiral Soe Thein made a speech. Then, Assistant Lecturer U Khin Maung Win of University of Computer Studies (Yangon) explained about the quiz. Twenty-five members each from North Okkalapa and Kamayut Township Union Solidarity and Development Associations took part in the morning session of the quiz and another 25 members of USDA from Thanlyin Township in the evening session.


Commander of Central command inspects land reclamation tasks

Yangon, 6 March — Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, inspected  the reclamation of 500 acres of land being carried out by local people and the Agricultural Mechanization Department at Htanaung-taing Village in the area in Seiknyan River Water Pumping Project. Afterwards, the commander heard the reports by departmental personnel and local farmers and attended to their needs.


Farm machinery introduced in  Pathein, Ayeyawady Division

Yangon, 6 March— The ceremony to demonstrate the use of farm machinery, organized by the Ministry of Industry-2 and SPA Lwin and Swan Tractor Enterprise, was held at Pathein University staff welfare plantation in Pathein, Ayeyawady Division, yesterday morning.

Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein Lin explained the purpose of the ceremony and Commander Maj-Gen Htay Oo made a speech. Then, the capacity of machinery produced by the ministry was demonstrated and queries raised by the farmers were replied to. The commander and the deputy minister viewed the machinery displayed at the temporary sales centre. After the ceremony, the commander cordially greeted the farmers. In the afternoon, the commander addressed the coordination meeting of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council held at Ayeya Shwewa Hall in Pathein. The commander attended to the needs.


Sugarcane plantations in Bago Division inspected

Yangon, 6 March — Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung and officials, inspected thriving sugarcane plantations and attended to the needs in Pyay Township yesterday morning. There, green gram and water melon are cultivated as mixed crops among the sugarcane plantations. Then, the deputy minister and party inspected Myaywa River Water Pumping Project site for Nawaday Sugar Factory area and fulfilled the requirements. Next, they inspected land preparations for cultivation of sugarcane in Thegon and Paukkhaung Townships. In the afternoon, they went to Kywethe Village sugarcane purchase center in Aunglan Township, Magway Division, and met with some 300 farmers for providing fertilizers, water supply and quality strains. Later, the deputy minister and party met with 475 farmers at the monastery in Gonhnyindan Village, Taungdwingyi Township, and discussed matters related to extended cultivation of sugarcane in the region.


Superstar Virgo cruiser to visit Myanmar

Yangon, 6 March — A coordination meeting was held for the first visit of Superstar Virgo Cruise of Star Cruises to Myanmar in October 2003, at the Ministry of Transport this morning. The Super Star Virgo Cruise is 268.29 metres long with an 8.1-metre draught. The 76,800-ton cruise can carry 2,500 passengers on board. It will arrive at Myanmar International Thilawa Terminal soon.


Township MCWAs’ delivery rooms inspected

Yangon, 6 March — Patron of the Supervisory Committee for Yangon Division Maternal and Child Welfare Association Daw Khin Thet Htay and officials inspected delivery rooms of Hmawby and Shwepyitha townships MCWAs in Yangon District (North) this morning and attended to the needs. She then met with the township Maternal and Child Welfare Associations members and briefed them on future tasks laid down by MCWA (Central) to be carried out by township MCWAs. At the two meetings, Hmawby and Shwepyitha township Peace and Development Council chairmen and MCWA chairpersons reported on tasks being carried out by respective township MCWAs.

Yangon, 6 March — The State Peace and Development Council has appointed Pro-Rector U Saw Kyaw Min of Yangon Western University of the Higher Education Department (Lower Myanmar) of the Ministry of Education as Rector of the same university on probation from the date he assumes charge of his duties.


Tarred road and bridges inaugurated

Yangon, 6 March — As a gesture hailing the 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day, tarred road leading to the hospital in Lonkhin Village in Phakant  and new bridges were opened to the public on 8 February morning. First, Col Tin Shein of the Northern Command made a speech. Then, Executive Officer of the Township Development Affairs Committee U Win Min Than explained the purpose of the construction of the road and bridges. Afterwards, Col Tin Shein, Chairman U Kyi Hlaing of Lonkin Village Peace and Development Council and Executive Officer of the Township Development Affairs Committee U Win Min Than formally opened the road and bridges. The road, with 400 feet in length and 16 feet in width, was constructed by the Township DAC.


Tube-well opened in Hsunbon Village

Yangon, 6 March — Officials of the Kayah State Development Affairs Committee inspected sinking of a tube-well on 1 February in Hsunbon Village in Loikaw Township sunk by township DAC. The sinking of the tube- well was completed on 13 January.


Beinnwegon Village gets sufficient water

Yangon, 6 March — For supplying clean water for Beinnwegon Village, Taungtha Township, a two-inch tube-well  sunk by township Development Affairs Committee was opened on 4 March morning. It has 1,000-gallon-per-hour capacity and is 420 feet deep. There was a scarcity of water in the past. Now, the village gets sufficient drinking water.


Two lakes  cleaned in Mogok

Yangon, 6 March — Local people of Padamya Ward in Mogok and staff of township Development Affairs Department on 24 February cleaned two water storage lakes in Sitan Ward. Mogok Township DAD supplies water to the town from the two lakes two times a day.


Tube-wells, hand pumps put into service

Yangon, 6 March — A hand pump sunk by Taze Township Development Affairs Department was put into service in Thantha Village in Taze Township on 26 February. During 2002-2003 fiscal year, Taze Township DAD has sunk 3 tube-wells and 10 hand pumps.

Taungtha gets another tube-well

Taungtha Township on 24 February put into service one more tube-well supplying clean water for Htanpinkan (North) Village. The 1,200-gallon-per-hour capacity tube-well was installed at the village at a cost of K 625,000, to which the donors, U Khin Maung Lay of Myomann Company contributed K 500,000 and the Township Development Affairs Committee, K 125,000.

Model village sets up self-reliance library

Self-reliance library   opened in Theegon Model Village in Minbu (Saku) Township on 18 February.  Official of Minbu District Information and Public Relations Department U Thein Tun Aung explained facts about the opening of the libraries.

Buddha image conveyed to Kyaukdaga

The 17.5-foot-high Pyilon Aye Myinbahu Maha Myat Muni Buddha Image temporarily kept at the eastern prayer hall of the Shwedagon Pagoda, was conveyed for public obeisance to the Mingalar Pandal of U Tin Aung-Daw Than Than Win of Sein Cheroot factory in Peinzaloak on 17 February. The image will be conveyed to Ward 2, Phado, Kyaukdaga Township, to be permanently kept there.

Cash donated for road construction

Wellwishers donated K 2.108 million for Pantanaw-Gonmin-Tawkyaung-Daunggyi road at a ceremony held at Tawkyaung Village-tract on 22 February. The road is being built by Township USDA and Development Affairs Committee.

New tube-well opened in Kanbalu

The new two-inch-diameter tube-well was opened at Leiktu Village, Kanbalu Township, on 28 February. The tube-well was sunk with the donations of Thiha Thudhamma Manizawtadhara U Thein Win-Thiha Thudhamma Theingi Thiri Thudhamma Theingi Daw Ni of Shwe Than Lwin Co. It has a capacity of 1,500 gallons per hour. So far, Township DAC has sunk 41 tube-wells in the township.

Talks on all-round development of young women held

Talks on all-round development of young women took place at Thakhwuttaw Village, Wetlet Township, Sagaing Division, on 13 February. Township Maternal and Child Welfare Association Patron Daw Khin Win and members gave talks on tasks to be carried out for prevention of human trafficking and vocational education subjects such as tailoring, knitting, embroidery and others sector-wise.

Myanmar delegation leaves for Sri Lanka to attend  4th BIMST-EC Commerce and Economic Ministers’ Meeting

Yangon, 6 March—Minister at the Office of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Abel left for Colombo, Sri Lanka this afternoon to attend the fourth BIMST-EC Commerce and Economic Ministers’ Meeting to be held on 7 March. Myanmar Ambassador to Sri Lanka U Than Tun, Deputy Head of Myanmar Embassy and Staff Officer U Pe Aung of National AFTA Unit will attend the meeting as the members of the Myanmar delegation led by Brig-Gen Abel.

e-Commerce course opened

Yangon, 6 March—  e-Commerce with Struts and JWSDP Application Course jointly conducted by Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry and Japan Overseas Development Corporation (JODC) was opened this morning at MICT Park in Hline Township. General Secretary U Zaw Min Win and e-Commerce Expert Mr Satoshi Kodaira of JODC made speeches on the occasion. Altogether 35 trainees are attending the 10-day course starting today.


MNOC Chairman’s Trophy soccer tourney continues

Yangon, 6 March — The second Myanmar National Olympic Committee Chairman’s Trophy soccer tournament (open) for the year 2003, organized by Myanmar Football Federation, continued at the Youths Training Centre in Thuwunna this afternoon. The Ruby Dragon team beat the Yangon City Development Committee team 2-0 in the Group B. The man of the match award went to Aung Kyaw Tun of the former. The Finance and Revenue team plays against the Ministry of Construction team tomorrow in the Group A at the same venue.


MFF meets sports journalists

Yangon, 6 March — The Myanmar Football Federation and the Myanmar Sports Journalists Federation held a meeting at the meeting hall of Aung San Gymnasium this morning. MFF President U Thaung Htaik explained long-term projects under implementation for enhancing  Myanmar’s football standard. MSJF President Dr Tin Tun Oo explained the purpose of holding the meeting, and MFF Secretary U Tin Aung, the camping of footballers and organizing the football tournaments. The MFF president, secretary, coaches and officials assessed the reports.The meeting came to an end with concluding remarks by the director-general.
