Emphasis placed on development of Yangon-Mandalay Highway and roads linking states and divisions Bole piles driven for construction of Myitnge Bridge in Mandalay
Yangon, 8 March — The bole pile driving ceremony for construction of Myitnge Bridge to be undertaken by Public Works of the Ministry of Construction took place at the Mile Post 421/3 on Yangon-Mandalay Highway in Mandalay Division yesterday morning.
Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun made an address, saying that the government had been implementing the goal — building a peaceful, modern and developed nation. In this process, he added that upholding the State’s policy, Our Three Main National Causes, efforts were being made for ensuring equitable development of the entire nation after laying down the twelve objectives. In accord with the guidance of the Head of State, the priority was given to the development of economic and social infrastructures in building a developed nation. At the same time, measures were being taken for development of transport infrastructures which contributed much to economic and social affairs tasks. Altogether 80 Union Highways designated stretching 15,142 miles — 35 highways of 9,450 miles from south to north and 45 highways of 5,692 miles from east to west had been constructed and upgraded from earth roads to laterite ones, then to gravel ones and to tarred ones in phases as well as expanded to six-lane facilities. In transportation between Upper Myanmar and Lower Myanmar, the majority of strategic Yangon-Mandalay Highway were two-lane sections, the two-lane bridges of which could withstand only 13 to 20 tons of loads. Moreover, there were still one-lane bridges on these sections causing hindrance to transportation especially to the trucks. So, duties were assigned to the seven national companies for upgrading Yangon-Mandalay Highway, the busiest one, to a six-lane facility under BOT system.
With an update on Yangon-Mandalay Highway to a six-lane one, plans were under way to reconstruct the narrow and small bridges to four-lane or six-lane ones, each of which could withstand 60 tons of loads. The Ye Nwe Bridge had been built on the highway in Bago Division. And endeavours were being made with added momentum for ensuring opening similar ones in the very near future.
Originally, the Myitnge Bridge was a two-lane steel-framed one that was not far away from Mandalay. Therefore, under the guidance of the Head of State, the ceremony was held to rebuild the bridge. It would be of the 872-foot-long concrete one that could withstand 75 tons of loads.
Then, the commander said that Myitnge Bridge was on the State’s strategic Yangon-Mandalay Highway across Myitnge River. The old bridge could only withstand 13-ton loads and thus it caused hindrance and restriction to the trucks. Besides, it could not withstand the effect of daily passing over 5,000 vehicles for a long time. So, the bridge had to be rebuilt. Plans were under way to reconstruct the other old bridges on Yangon-Mandalay Highway to modern ones one after another. In building up a modern developed nation in line with the guidance of the Head of State, priority was given to implementation of projects for the development of economic infrastructure and simultaneously all-out efforts were being made for development of transport sector which contributed towards economic and social sectors. Emphasis was placed on development of Yangon-Mandalay Highway as well as that of the roads linking states and divisions at the same time.
Only when there is smooth transport, will trading and travelling improve and the economic standard of the people in different regions rise. And economic gap between one region and another will bridge and the national solidarity will further strengthen. Head of State Senior General Than Shwe had given guidance, saying that strategy on construction of roads and railroads is to ensure smooth transportation from the south to north and from the east to the west of Myanmar. With a view to ensuring smooth transportation among the regions including far-flung areas, roads have been constructed in a short period of time. The transport sector can uplift the economy as well as socio-economy of the entire people. The Myitnge Bridge is on Yangon-Mandalay Highway, the busiest one, and so national private companies have started to carry out construction tasks on the highway with the aim of ensuring emergence of an upgraded six-lane facility without causing hindrance to the transportation.
As is known to all, the government has been implementing development projects and 24 development regions projects simultaneously for ensuring equal development of states and divisions. In this process, if the government, the people and the Tatmadaw actively implement the projects in union, Myanmar will be a developed nation which can stand tall among the nations of the world.
In conclusion, he called on those present, in order to do so, to make collective efforts with might and main to build up a modern developed nation for political, economic and social objectives have been already laid down.
