Yangon, 13 March - Under the patronage of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing, families of the State Peace and Development Council and Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) offered "soon" to members of the State Ovadacariya, the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee and the Central Working Committee of the Sangha and title recipient Sayadaws at the Tatmadaw Dham-mayon on Arzarni Street, Bahan Township, at 9.30 am today.
The ceremony was graced by the presence of members of the State Ovadacariya, the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee and the Central Working Committee of the Sangha, and title recipient Sayadaws and nuns.
Also present were Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt and wife Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, Daw Khin Than Nwe, wife of Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Member of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Thura Shwe Mann of the Ministry of Defence and wife, Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Soe Win and wife, members of the State Peace and Development Council and their wives, the Commander-in-Chief (Navy) and wife, the Commander-in-Chief (Air) and wife, the chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council the commander of Yangon Command and wife, ministers and their wives, the chief justice, the attorney-general, the chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board, the Yagon mayor, senior military officers and their wives, the director-general of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental heads and guests.
Adviser to the State Peace and Development Council Office U Arnt Maung acted as master of ceremonies. The ceremony was opened with three-time recitation of Namo Tassa.
Vice-Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Dawei Sayadaw Bhaddanta Acinnabhivamsa invested Senior General Than Shwe, Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party with the Five Precepts.
Members of the Sangha recited parittas. Senior General Than Shwe, Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party presented offertories to members of the Sangha.
Then, Secretary of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhamma-jotika Magway Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kumara delivered a sermon. Senior General Than Shwe, Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party shared merits gained.

Yangon, 13 March - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt previewed the 40th Myanma Gems Emporium 2003 this afternoon.
The Secretary-1, accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at the preview of the 40th Myanma Gems Emporium on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road at 5.30 pm.
First, the Secretary-1 and party viewed the gem and gem mosaic shops of Myanma Gems Enterprise and private entrepreneurs on the ground floor, uncut jade blocks displayed around the emporium, gems and pearl lots on the top floor and imperial jade lots at the auction hall. Members of the central committee conducted the Secretary-1 and party round the emporium.
At the auction hall, the Secretary-1 heard reports on arrangements for the emporium presented by Patron of the Central Committee for holding the 40th Myanma Gems Emporium Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint and gave necessary instructions.

Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn visits Mandalay and Muse
Yangon, 13 March - Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of the Kingdom of Thailand visited Mandalay and Muse on 11 and 12 March.
Princess Sirindhorn arrived in Myanmar at the invitation of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe.
Accompanied by Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung and wife, Ambassador of Myanmar to Thailand U Myo Myint and wife, Director-General of the Department of Myanmar Missions Abroad U Ko Ko Kyaw, and Ambassador of Thailand to Myanmar Mr Oum Maolanon and wife, the Princess left Yangon on 11 March.
On arrival at Mandalay International Airport in TadaU Township, Mandalay Division, at 9.30 am, Princess Sirindhorn was welcomed by Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint and wife, Chairman of Mandalay City Development Committee Brig-Gen Yan Thein and wife, Deputy Chief Justice U Khin Maung Latt and wife, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Nay Win and wife, senior military officers, local authorities, division level officials, and members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Maternal and Child Welfare Association and Working Committee for Women's Affairs.
School girls welcomed the Princess by waving the miniature flags of the two countries and chanting slogans wishing the Princess good health and further promotion and perpetuation of Myanmar-Thai relations.
Accompanied by the commander and wife, the Princess visited Galon Min Gold Foil Workshop and studied the process of making gold foils.
At the Myanan Sankyaw Palace, the Princess heard the history of the palace. Officials then conducted her round the palace. Later, she visited Shwenandaw Cultural Museum of the Department of Cultural Institute.
The commander and wife hosted luncheon in honour of Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn at Yangyi Aung Villa. The Princess presented a souvenir to the commander, and the commander and wife also presented a gift to her.
The Princess then left Mandalay International Airport by special flight for Lashio in northern Shan State.
She was seen off at the airport by the commander and wife, high level officials and members of the social organizations.
The plane landed at Lashio Airport at 2.55 pm, and the Princess was welcomed by Chairman of Shan State (North) Peace and Development Council Commander of Northern Command Maj-Gen Myint Hlaing and wife, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Hla Myint, senior military officers, departmental officials and members of the social organizations.
Accompanied by the commander and wife, the Princess helicoptered to Muse. In Muse, she was welcomed by senior military officers, officials and cultural troupes of Muse and Namhkam townships.
At the Shwenandaw Tour Service, the Princess visited the jewellery and gem shops on the ground floor, and the Gems Mart on the second floor. She studied the map of Myanmar showing the places where 52 kinds of gems are mined.
In the compound of the centre, she enjoyed the tricks performed by the tamed elephants, and fed the animals. She then visited Muse Municipal Market. The Princess spent the night at Shweli Yadana Villa.
The next morning, she passed through Jiegao No 1 Border Point and visited Jiegao town in the People's Republic of China. On arrival at the town in a motorcade, she was welcomed by Vice Political Consultant Mr Jianjo Jian of Yunnan Province and officials of the PRC.
Accompanied by PRC officials, the Thai Princess visited the Jiegao Industrial Zone and went round the town in a motorcade. At Thiri Mingala Jiegao Monastery in the town, she paid obeisance to Sayadaw Bhaddanta Socinna. She also presented offertories to the Buddhist monk. During the visit to the town park, she planted a Bo tree to mark her visit.
The Princess then went back to Lashio by helicopter from Muse. She was seen off at the helicopter pad by senior officials and traditional dance troupes.
Yangon, 13 March - Under the supervision of the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, sponsored by the Ministry of Transport and arranged by Myanmar Lotus Asia Tours Ltd, a chartered flight Lauda Air Boeing 767/300 with 70 Italian tourists on board landed at Yangon International Airport this morning. Officials of the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism and Myanmar Lotus Asia Tours Ltd and national damsels of cultural dance troupe of the Myanma Tourism Services welcomed the tourists at the airport.
The tourists will tour Yangon, Bago, Bagan, Mandalay and Inlay in two groups and leave here on 20 March.

Yangon, 13 March - Hailing the 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day, cash and kind was presented for the second time to the Tatmadawmen who will take part in the 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day parade at the meeting hall of the Directorate of Defence Services Museum and Historical Research Institute on Shwedagon Pagoda Road here this afternoon.

Yangon, 13 March - Member of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Ye Myint of the Ministry of Defence yesterday inspected progress of Pakokku, a major town on the western bank of Ayeyawady River.
Accompanied by Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Brig-Gen Than Tun and officials, Lt-Gen Ye Myint went to Shwe Tanttit Jetty in Pakokku and proceeded to Malar Jetty in Taungtha Township. Lt-Gen Ye Myint and party, together with Officiating Tactital Operations Commander of Central Command Lt-Col Win Swe, Member of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commissioner of Division General Administration Department U Kyin Lin and departmental heads, inspected reclamation of 50-acre land to cultivate crops with water from Kyawzi River Water Pumping Project. Officials conducted Lt-Gen Ye Myint round the area. Lt-Gen Ye Myint gave instructions to local farmers and officials on cultivation of paddy on the reclaimed land in the rainy season, prevention from cutting down trees and maintenance of roads. The project will cover 1,979 acres of farmland - 848 acres in Tamaiktha Village-tract and 1,131 acres in Kyawzi Village-tract.
Lt-Gen Ye Myint and party inspected construction of a bridge across the canal of the project in Kywezin Village. They went to Hsintewa Creek Bridge on Bagan-NyaungU-Myingyan Road. After giving necessary instructions, Lt-Gen Ye Myint inspected thriving crops plantations in the surrounding areas of the bridge.
At the briefing hall of TadaU-Myotha-Myingyan-NyaungU Road Construction Project, officials reported on tasks being carried out and progress in construction of NyaungU-Letpanchepaw-Malar-Tamaiktha village-to-village road. The chairman of Myingyan District Peace and Development Council gave a supplementary report.
Lt-Gen Ye Myint gave instructions on minimizing loss and wastage in upgrading roads.
Lt-Gen Ye Myint met with township level departmental officials at the office of Taungtha Township Peace and Development Council. Officials reported on progress in upgrading roads of Taungtha-Natogyi sections in the township and construction of village-to-village roads. The director of Division Development Affairs Department and chairman of District Peace and Development Council gave supplementary reports. Lt-Gen Ye Myint gave instructions on upgrading the roads to 40-foot-wide facilities with a 3-foot-wide drain and a lane for bullock carts.
Lt-Gen Ye Myint and party inspected the road section eroded near Kyauktan Tayo Village dam in the same township and gave instructions on reconstruction of the road as soon as possible. They then inspected the inflow of water into the dam, which contributes to 50 acres of summer paddy and 100 acres of monsoon paddy fields.
They proceeded to Natogyi through village-to-village roads. The Taungtha-Natogyi shortcut is 18-miles long and Taungtha-Myingyan-Natogyi Road 35-miles. Lt-Gen Ye Myint and party met with departmental officials and personnel at the office of Township Peace and Development Council. Officials reported on population of the township, use of land resources, cultivation of crops, condition of food sufficiency, growing of trees for greening of theregion, and transport and edcuation sectors. Speaking on the occasion, Lt-Gen Ye Myint said that the upgrading of roads in the township and ensuring regional rice sufficiency meant participation in implementating rural development tasks laid down by the State. He called on the officials to make collective efforts in carrying out these tasks.
Lt-Gen Ye Myint and party arrived at Wetlu feeder road of Natogyi-Myingyan Road and inspected village-to-village roads and Wetlu-Myetshu rural feeder road. They inspected condition of roads sections in Myaingtha Junction, and Nyaungwun-Myaingtha Junction in Hsihsongon Village, Myittha Township and met with local people. Natogyi-Myittha-Kyaukse Road is 52 miles long and Natogyi-Wetlu-Myaingtha-Kyaukhsauk-gon-Kyaukse village-to-village road is 42 miles and one furlong long - 11 mile tarred section, eight miles and one furlong gravel section and 23 miles and one furlong laterite section.
Lt-Gen Ye Myint and party inspected Kyaukhsaukgon Village Basic Education Middle School and Kyauk-hsaukgon Bridge across Samon River in Kyaukse Township. Officials reported on facts about the bridge. Lt-Gen Ye Myint gave necessary instructions.
Lt-Gen Ye Myint and party went to Htanlontat Diversion Weir Con-strucion Project. At the briefing hall of the project, officials reported on loation of the project, arrival of heavy machinery and land preparations. Lt-Gen Ye Myint gave instructions on timely completion and inspected construction tasks with the use of heavy machinery. The concrete diversion weir will be of 1,300 square miles in area, 15 feet in height and 400 feet in length with a 10 miles and four furlongs long canal. It will benefit some 6,200 acres of farmland.
Then, Lt-Gen Ye Myint and party inspected construcion of Kyaukse section of Yangon-Mandalay Six-lane Highway Construction Project being undertaken by Hong Pang Co Ltd. Lt-Gen Ye Myint and party inspected the tar factory of the company. Managing Director U Khin Maung Myint and officials conducted Lt-Gen Ye Myint and party round the factory. Lt-Gen Ye Myint and party arrived back at Mandalay in the evening.
Forestry Minister inspects departmental tasks
Yangon, 13 March - Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone visited Mingin Township and met with the chairman of township Peace and Development Council and the secretary and executives of Mingin Township Union Solidarity and Development Association on 7 March.
After leaving instructions on maintenance of the 15-mile long Mingin-Kyaw Village motor road for durability, the minister inspected extracting of timber in Taungdwinchaung forest reserve to the west of the Monywa-Kalaywa strategic road and spent the night at Htongyi Village. The minister presented planks and CI sheets for renovation of basic education primary schools in Htongyi and Tatchaung villages. Then, he visited Alaungdaw Kasapha image and paid homage to the Sayadaws there. The minister arrived at PyinOoLwin and gave instructions on construction of Nanmyint Tower. After inspecting logs at Paleik log depot, the minister left for Yangon by air. This morning, the minister inspected the booth of the ministry at the 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Exhibition at Defence Services Museum.
Lt-Gen Ye Myint inspects preparation of Myitnge Bridge construction
Yangon, 13 March - Member of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Ye Myint of the Ministry of Defence arrived at Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital in Mandalay this morning.
Lt-Gen Ye Myint and party paid obeisance to Sayadaw of Mandalay Division Sangha Nayaka Committee Agga Maha Pandita Agga Maha Ganthavasaka Pandita Bhaddanta Sasana- bhivansa of Moeta Monastery who was undergoing treatment for eye surgery at the hospital. Medical Superintendent Dr Mya Than and Eye Specialist Prof Dr Thein Tun reported on condition of the surgery. Next, Lt-Gen Ye Myint presented offertories to the Sayadaw.
Later, Lt-Gen Ye Myint and party went to construction site of Myitnge Bridge at mile-post 421/3 near Singaing Township. At the briefing hall, Mandalay Division Superintending Engineer of the Public Works U Sai Thein Maung reported on plans and matters on bridge construction project. After giving necessary instructions, Lt-Gen Ye Myint inspected the place where piles are to be driven.
The bridge will be 80 feet wide and 872 feet long accommodating a 72 feet wide motor way and two 4-foot wide sidewalks. The bridge construction special group will construct the six-lane bridge. Lt-Gen Ye Myint then inspected construction of the 84 miles and 2 furlongs long road passing through TadaU and Sagainn to Aimanatchaung in Mandalay. Of the two-mile section to be gravelled, one mile has been completed.
Later, Lt-Gen Ye Myint left Mandalay for Yangon by air. During his tour, Lt-Gen Ye Myint on 12 March met with military officers and other ranks and their families at Yedagon hall of No 101 Light Infantry Division in Pakokku and briefed them on political, economic and social affairs of the State.

Yangon, 13 March - The second meeting of the Central Committee for holding the 40th Myanma Gems Emporium 2003 was held at Myanma Gem Hall on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road here at 4:30 pm today, attended by Patron of the Central Committee for holding the 40th Myanma Gems Emporium Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint. It was also attended by Chairman of the Central Committee for holding the 40th Myanma Gems Emporium 2003 Deputy Minister for Mines U Myint Thein, Vice-Chairman of the committee Deputy Minister for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint, Secretary of the committee Managing Director of Myanma Gems Enterprise U Khin Oo. Minister inspects booths of Armed Forces Day Exhibition
Yangon, 13 March - Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa inspected the preparation of booths of the ministries and booths on nation-building endeavours and Twelve Objectives of the State for the 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Exhibition at Defence Services Museum on Shwedagon Pagoda Road this afternoon and left necessary instructions.
Asia Regional HIV/AIDS Project Supervisory Committee meets
Yangon, 13 March - The opening ceremony of first meeting of the Supervisory Committee for Asia Regional HIV/AIDS Project implemented in Myanmar and Yunnan Province and Guangxi Zhaung region of PRC under the programme of AusAID was held at the Micasa Hotel on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this morning.
Joint-Secretary of Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control Police Col Hkam Aung and Project Manager Ms Carol Macleod of AusAID made speeches.
Present on the occasion were members of CCDAC, officials of Drug Elimination Unit, the Health Department, AusAID and Asia Regional HIV/AIDS Project and delegates of Yunnan Province and Guangxi Zhaung region of PRC. The meeting continues tomorrow.
Management, clerical courses end
Yangon, 13 March - Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt attended the conclusion of management course No 15, and clerical course Nos 22, 23 and 24 at the central training school of the Education and Training Department of the ministry in Dagon Myothit (North) this afternoon.
The minister spoke on the occasion. Present on the occasion were Deputy Minister U Kyaw Tin, officials and trainees.
A total of 30 trainees from the Progress of Border Areas and National Races Department and the ETD attended the course No 15; 90 trainees from the Development Affairs Department attended the course Nos 22 and 23; and course No 24 was attended by 29 trainees from the PBANRD and the ETD. Altogether 149 trainees successfully completed the courses, which lasted ten weeks.

Zaw Zin Win emerges champion in Tiger Myanmar Amateur Open 2003
YANGON, 13 March - The final day of the Tiger Myanmar Amateur Open 2003, organized by Myanmar Golf Federation and mainly sponsored by Tiger Beer, was held at Yangon Golf Club, Danyingon, here this afternoon, attended by MGF President Maj-Gen Win Hlaing.
Present on the occasion were Myanmar Olympic Committee Secretary Sports and Physical Education Department Director-General U Thaung Htaik and officials, MGF General Secretary U Aung Kyi and executives, officials from Myanmar Brewery Ltd (Tiger Beer), invited guests and golf enthusiasts.
After the final round, the prize-presentation ceremony was held. MGF President Maj-Gen Win Hlaing made a speech. General Manager Mr David Teng of Tiger Beer and Director-General U Thaung Htaik presented daily best awards to Myo Min Aung and Thein Zaw Myint with 72 strokes each on the first day, Zaw Zin Win with 71 on the second day, Aye Ko with 72 strokes on the third day and Kyaw Thiha with 69 on the fourth day.
Then, the MGF President presented the first prize to Myanmar Selected Golfer Zaw Zin Win with 291 strokes, the second to Myanmar Selected Golfer Myo Myint Aung with 294, the third to Thein Zaw Myint with 298, the fourth to Kyaw Hlaing with 300 and the fifth to Kyaw Thiha with 301.
General Manager Mr David Teng presented a gift to Yangon Golf Club through YGC Secretary U Aye Cho.
The tournament was organized by Han Event Management. The co-sponsors were Cannon (Accel International Co Ltd), Wilson, Air Mandalay, Loi-Hein (Alpine Purified Drinking Water) and the YGC.
Myanmar CP Inter-Club Tennis Tournament to be held
Yangon, 13 March - As a gesture of hailing the 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day, Myanmar CP Inter-Club Tennis Tournament organized by Myanmar Tennis Federation and sponsored by Myanmar CP Co Ltd will be held at Theinbyu Tennis Court here from 22 to 28 March.
The tourney will be held in three divisions. A Class (Team-wise is for Myanmar national players and state/division level players; B Class (team-wise) is for players under state/division level). Only one former state/division selection of age above-45 will be permitted to participate in each team. The number of 50-year-old and above state/division players and 55 and above ex-national plauers for each team is limitless. Women's singles and doubles are also included in the tourney.
