Secretary-1 calls for collective, concerted efforts for modernizing Yangon City
Yangon, 23 March - City Housing Project Supervisory Committee Chairman State Peace and Development Council Secretary-1 General Khin Nyunt attended coordination meeting 2/2003 of the committee held at the hall of the Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development of the Ministry of Construction on Bogyoke Aung San Road here this morning.
Chairman of the committee Secretary-1 General Khin Nyunt made an opening speech. He said the committee was formed to assign duties for upgrading Yangon City to have international standard and success has been achieved to a certain extent. In accordance with the guidance of the Head of State on turning the city into an international one, efforts are being made based on the guidance. The task is a big one but officials concerned have made efforts in unity and the city can be seen lush and green, and spick and span. He said all are to maintain this condition and to strive for the city to be modern and grand.
At present, the main roads in the city are being upgraded into six-lane ones to meet the international standard. As Strand Road is used mainly by heavy vehicles, it is upgraded into a six-lane one. At the same time, the railroad parallel to Strand Road is upgraded. Moreover, tasks are underway to make drainage and sewerage system improved. Jetties along the river were in ruin due to lack of proper repair and maintenance in successive years. So, arrangements are being made to maintain and upgrade them, he said.
In addition, efforts are made for emergence of modern and grand buildings along the main roads such as Pyay Road, Kaba Aye Pagoda Road and Mindhamma Road. In doing so, not only the departments but also national entrepreneurs are assigned duties for construction of modern and grand buildings. In implementing the guidance of the Head of State by setting accurate aims, departmental staff and private entrepreneurs are to make collective and concerted efforts free from departmental and personal attachments but for the city to have an international standard. Now, the city is lush and green and transportation is smooth.
In conclusion, the Secretary-1 urged all officials concerned to unitedly continue making efforts for turning the city into a clean, lush and green, modern and grand one meeting international standard.
Afterwards, members of the CHPSC and officials made reports on respective sectors for development of the city. After attending to the needs, the Secretary-1, accompanied by Commander Maj-Gen Myint Swe, officials from the State Peace and Development Council Office, inspected upgrading of Strand Road into a six-lane one.

Ayeyawady River (Dedaye) Bridge inaugurated
Yangon, 23 March - Honouring the 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day, Dedaye Bridge linking Kungyangon Township in Yangon Division and Dedaye Township in Ayeyawady Division was inaugurated this morning, with an address by member of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Thura Shwe Mann.
The opening ceremony of Dedaye Bridge built by Public Works of the Ministry of Construction was held at the pandal near the bridge in Kungyangon Township at 7.30 am.
First, Lt-Gen Thura Shwe Mann delivered a speech.
He said that the Dedaye Bridge linking Yangon and Ayeyawady Divisions was opened on 23 March 2003 as a gesture of hailing the 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day.
The bridge with the length of over 4,000 feet is part of the Yangon-Kungyangon-Dedaye-Pyapon-Kyaiklat-Maubin-Yangon Main road. With the use of the bridge, one can travel Pyapon-Kyunkadon-Seikma-Ahma trip, Pyapon-Bogalay trip, Maubin-Nyaungdon-Pathein and Nyaungdon-Hinthada trips and Nyaungdon-Thandwe of Rakhine State trip. Head of State Senior General Than Shwe was well aware of poor transport between one township and another in Ayeyawady Division as he had been the commander in the division. Thus, the Head of State has been making arrangements in earnest to provide better transport to the division. As a result, motor roads have been constructed and upgraded, and the river-crossing bridges have been built one after another in the division.
In accord with the guidance of the Head of State, altogether 38 major bridges with the length of 180 feet and above have been constructed in the division. Of them, the most significant ones are Bo Myat Tun Bridge, Maubin Bridge, Myaungmya Bridge, Pinlelay Bridge, Gonnyindan Bridge, Wakema Bridge, Shwelaung Bridge, Uto Bridge and the newly opened Ayeyawady River (Dedaye) Bridge.
A network of motor roads and bridges in the division emerged as a result of concerted and collective efforts exerted by the local people. There were 463 miles of motor roads in the past in the division and there are now 1,300 miles of motor roads, thus contributing to better transport. In the time of the Tatmadaw Government, the new bridges and roads have been constructed and the old ones upgraded across the nation. Likewise, the Ministry of Construction has been constructing roads and bridges, the prerequisite for national development, under the supervision of the Head of State. Thus, a total of 153 major bridges with the length of 180 feet and over have been constructed throughout the nation.
With a view to boosting the agricultural sector and serving the interests of the farmers and the people, the Government has been constructing dams, reservoirs, sluice gates, embankments and implementing the river water pumping projects the length and breadth of the nation. Now, 117 dams, 16 diversion weirs, 11 sluice gates have been built and 265 river water pumping projects implemented.
With better transport and those irrigation facilities, the sown acreage has increased markedly nationwide. There were 26.2 million acres of farmland in 2001-2002 compared with 19.9 million acres of farmland in 1988-89. Similarly, the area of irrigated farmland has increased up to 4.9 million acres with an increase in the number of dams and reservoirs in comparison with 2.52 million acres in 1988-89.
Development of the industrial sector is needed for the emergence of a modern and developed nation. So encouragement is being given to development of the industrial sector. This being so, altogether 18 industrial zones were set up in the country for national development.
At the same time, emphasis is being placed on stability of the State, community peace and prevalence of law and order and the national unity. Thus, there prevails peace and tranquillity in all parts of the nation. Owing to prevalence of peace and tranquillity in the nation, production, services and trade are making progress with greater momentum. Likewise, the social infrastructures-uplift of the morale and morality of the entire nation, uplift of national prestige and integrity, uplift of dynamism of patriotic spirit and uplift of health, fitness and education standards of the entire nation-are being implemented in harmony. In addition, project for development of border areas and national races, the 24 development zones project and the five rural development tasks are being materialised to bring about equitable development across the nation.
He said tasks are being implemented for narrowing the development gap between one region and another and urban and rural areas and for equal development in all regions with noble goodwill and objectives. It is very important for all national peoples to participate in the tasks in unity, he said. He said perpetuation of the Union as long as the world exists and standing tall as a modern developed nation among the nations of the world mainly depend on unity of national peoples, discipline, care of time, sincerity, diligence, innovation in accord with modern technology and preservation of own national character. Therefore, he said, based on patriotism the citizens are to work hard with discipline, to protect national interest in all sectors and to ward off the danger of destructive elements and traitors. He said socio-economic conditions have improved in the State due to cooperation between the government and the people. With such achievements, bridges, airfields, universities and colleges as well as hospitals were built.
He said as the government is building peace and tranquillity and all-round development in the country firmly, it is actively cooperating with the world community especially neighbouring countries for international peace, security and development, practising active and independent foreign policy.
Moreover, the government is cooperating with regional organizations such as ASEAN and BIMST-EC. It carried out matters relating to strengthening of mutual relations and promoting cooperation among the nations based on correct foreign policy. In spite of pressures and fabrications to tarnish the dignity of the State, the Union of Myanmar has been standing tall as a sovereign nation with freedom, peace and progress, he added.
He said the Heads of State, delegates and tourists who visit the country have witnessed peace and stability and development of Myanmar. Emergence of a peaceful modern developed nation, the goal of the State, is also the desire of individual citizens who wish to live in peace with higher living standard, he added.
He said the government, the people, service personnel and the Tatmadawmen are to make efforts harmoniously for realization of the objectives of the State and for fulfilling the requirements of individual citizens.
He said the government would continue to carry out the tasks for the service, life security and better quality of life of the people. He called for serving the interest of the region and the State and maintenance of the bridge for durability.
Next, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun said the bridge links Yangon Division and Ayeyawady Division and it contributes towards regional development. It was built at a cost of K 3,550 million and 1.6 million US dollars. There are now seven bridges across the Ayeyawady River and Dedaye Bridge in Ayeyawady Division is one of them.
Then, Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Myint Swe spoke on the occasion. He said Toe River separates Kungyangon Township in Yangon Division and Dedaye Township in Ayeyawady Division. There was no direct link by car in the past. The Dedaye Bridge was built in two years and nine months. In Yangon Division 25 major bridges have been built since 1988. On completion of Panhlaing River Bridge and Twantay Canal Bridge, the people from Ayeyawady Division can travel to Yangon and other States and Divisions easily.
Next, Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West Command Maj-Gen Htay Oo spoke.
District executive of Pyapon District Union Solidarity and Development Association Daw Nan Ohnmar Mya spoke words of thanks.
Present at the ceremony were member of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Maung Than, the ministers, the chief of staff (Navy), the deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council office, department heads, members of Division, District and Township Peace and Development Councils, departmental staff, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association and social organizations, teachers, students and local people.
Next, Lt-Gen Thura Shwe Mann and party took their positions in front of the archway of the bridge.
At the auspicious time, Lt-Gen Khin Maung Than, Commander Maj-Gen Htay Oo, Commander Maj-Gen Myint Swe and Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun formally opened the bridge by cutting the ribbon.
Then, Lt-Gen Thura Shwe Mann and party posed for a documentary photo together with Deputy Superintending Engineer of Public Works U Khin Maung Win and officials in front of the archway.
Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun then formally unveiled the stone plaque of the bridge.
Lt-Gen Thura Shwe Mann and party had a stroll along the bridge and cordially greeted the local people. After that, Lt-Gen Thura Shwe Mann and party viewed the development of Dedaye Township by car.
The construction of Dedaye Bridge across Toe River started on 10 June 2000. The bridge is equipped with reinforced concrete piers, RCD bole piles and steel frame. It is 4088.3 feet long and 28 feet wide, and has six-foot-wide pedestrian lanes on both sides. The clearance under the bridge is 36 feet high and 350 feet wide. The bridge can bear 60 ton-loads.
Secretary-2 inspects Mone Creek Multi-purpose Dam Project site in Sedoktara Township
Yangon, 23 March- Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Soe Win arrived at the site of Mone Creek Multi-purpose Dam Project in Sedoktara Township by helicopter on 22 March.
Construction-8 Director of Irrigation Department U Myint Than reported on location and purpose of the project, construction of dam diversion tunnel, hydro-electric power tunnel and spillways and progress of work.
Deputy Minister for Electric Power U Myo Myint reported on construction of power station, installation of power lines and tasks being undertaken by Hydro-electric power Department and progress of work. Next, Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Col Zaw Min reported on improvement of conditions including cultivation of summer paddy on completion of the project.
Director (Design and Architect) of Irrigation Department U Khin Maung Nyunt reported on Kyee-on-Kyee-wa Dam Project, feasibility study for construction of Bu Village Dam and benefited cultivation acreage.
The Secretary-2 and party inspected construction of entrance of diversion tunnel, sluice gates, power intake and hydro-electric power tunnel. The Secretary-2 also inspected construction of the 4,320 feet long main dam. About 300 feet of the dam were left to be undertaken. Staff are making endeavours for completion of the dam before monsoon.
The Secretary-2 and party inspected construction of the structure which is 187 feet deep and 87 feet in diameter. It will be used to prevent floodings. He also inspected construction of penstock, tunnel, power station and flow of water from diversion tunnel, main spillways and others.
The Mone Creek Multi-purpose Dam Project will supply water to 108,000 acres of lands and generate 75 Megawatts of electricity. The Secretary-2 and party inspected development of Sedoktara. The Secretary-2 met members of Township Peace and Development Council, departmental officials, members of social organizations at Township Peace and Development Council Office and fulfilled the requirements on education, health, economic and transport matters. The Secretary-2 met secretary, executives and organizers of Township Union Solidarity and Development Association. He spoke on working hard for regional development and successful implementation of five rural development tasks.
The Secretary-2 and party inspected cultivation of 190 acres of summer paddy.
The Secretary-2 and party went to Mandalay by helicopter. Then they proceeded to Iron and Steel Plant in PyinOoLwin where rector of DSA Brig-Gen Ohn Myint and senior military officers welcome them.
General Manager U Saw Moe Myint and Assistant General Manager U Tin Maung reported on production of steel blocks, steel balls and steel rods of various sizes, orders for production of materials and requirements.
The Secretary-2 and party inspected stockpile of raw materials, control room, production of steel blocks, steel balls and steel rods of various sizes.
They also inspected production of Ferro Chrome and calcium carbide.
Chairman of Industrial Development Committee Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Soe Win and party inspected booths at Myanma Industrial Exhibition in Hsinphyukan Ground in Mandalay in the evening.
The Secretary-2 and party viewed central booth, booths of the ministries, entrepreneurs and industrial zones with interest.
More and more people visited the Myanma Industrial Exhibition 2003 which was opened on 19 March.
Eighty-six booths of the ministries, 190 booths of industrial zones and 47 booths of entrepreneurs are on display. A total of 68 shops and 36 restaurants are opened.
There are many sports and games, elephant dance show, thaing and dobat competition at the exhibition.

Lt-Gen Thein Sein meets MWVO members in Mon State
Yangon, 23 March - Chairman of the Central Organizing Committee for Myanmar War Veterans Organization member of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Thein Sein met with chairmen of state and district supervision groups for war veterans organization, chairmen and secretaries of township organizing committees and members of MWVO in Mon State yesterday. Lt-Gen Thein Sein explained to them on matters relating to the tasks being undertaken by the MWVO. Lt-Gen Thein Sein left here by car yesterday morning and arrived at Mawlamyine, Mon State, at 12.30 pm. Lt-Gen Thein Sein met with chairmen and secretaries of state and district supervision groups for WVOs, chairmen and secretaries of township organizing committees and members of MWVO at the Ramanya hall of Mon State Peace and Development Council office in Mawlamyine.
At the meeting, Chairman of Mon State Supervision Group for WVO Secretary of Mon State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Aung Maw Maw reported on organizing the WVO members in the state, implementation of five major tasks, welfare for the members and agriculture and livestock breeding tasks.
Then, member of the Thaton District WVO supervision group Major Aung Than (Retd) reported on formation of WVO organizing committees in Kyaikhto, Bilin, Thaton and Paung Townships in the district and welfare and public interest tasks being undertaken and Mawlamyine District WVO supervision group Chairman District Peace and Development Council Chairman Lt-Col Thaw Zin on form mation of WVO organizing committees in Mawlamyine, Chaungzon, Kyaikhto, Mudon, Thanbyuzayat and Yay Townships and implementation of five major tasks. Then, Lt-Gen Thein Sein gave instructions on formation of various levels of MWVO, policy and work programmes of the MWVO, tasks being carried out by the central organizing committee and future plans and tasks to be carried out by state, district and township WVOs. He also urged the members of the state, division, district and township WVOs to carry out the work programmes laid down by the MWVO (Central) and efforts are to be made for the organization to win the respect of the people. After the meeting, Lt-Gen Thein Sein cordially greeted those present.
Lt-Gen Ye Myint inspects regional development works
Yangon, 23 March - State Peace and Development Council Member Lt-Gen Ye Myint left Yangon by air on 21 March morning and arrived at Mandalay International Airport in TadaU Township, Mandalay Division.
Lt-Gen Ye Myint and party together with Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Chairman North-West Command Commander Maj-Gen Soe Naing proceeded to Hkamti.
At the briefing hall of the Hkamti Airport runway extension project, Public Works Assistant Engineer U Win Lwin reported to Lt-Gen Ye Myint on extension of the runway from 4,200 feet to 6,000 feet.
He also reported on tarring and earth works of the runway.
Then, Col Min Swe of North-West Command and Deputy Minister for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint reported on use of fuel and gravel.
Afterwards, Lt-Gen Ye Myint gave necessary instructions to regional battalions and local authorities to render help in supplying gravel required for extension of the runway. He also dealt matters on distribution of fuel in time to the work site and minimizing loss and wastage of fuel.
Next, Lt-Gen Ye Myint inspected the work site and gave necessary instructions to the officials concerned. He urged them to complete the works meeting the set standards before the rainy season.
As regards the extension of the runway of Hkamti airport, the 400 feet long section of the northern part of the runway which is 500 feet long, has been graveled with thickness of 6 inches. Altogether 200 feet long section has been tarred. In the southern part of the runway, 100 feet long and 100 feet wide section has been graveled with thickness of 12.5 inches.
Then, Lt-Gen Ye Myint had discussions with local authorities, departmental personnel and members of social organizations at the meeting hall of Hkamti District Peace and Development Council Office.
First, District Peace and Development Council Chairman Lt-Col Htin Aung Kyaw reported matters on implementation of projects, cultivation of crops in the district, efforts for ensuring self-sufficiency of rice and better transportation in the district.
Hkamti Township Peace and Development Council Chairman U Mya Oo, Homalin Township Peace and Development Council member-1 Police Captain Zaw Win and Leshi Township Peace and Development Council Chairman U Hla Tun reported matters on extensive cultivation of high yield paddy strains, turning slash and burn cultivation into terrace cultivation, and reclamation of farm land in the respective regions.
Commander Maj-Gen Soe Naing gave a supplementary report.
Then, Lt-Gen Ye Myint made a speech. He said that the Head of State has laid down five rural development tasks for developing the country with momentum and the local people are to participate actively. Roads linking one village and another are to be built on self-reliance basis with a view to ensuring development in health, education and economic sectors of the respective regions. He also urged local authorities, departmental officials and personnel of social organizations to make field tours to grass-root level for ensuring regional development of Hkamti and promoting the socio-economic life of the regional people.
Afterwards, Lt-Gen Ye Myint and party arrived at Hsinthay Village on the west bank of Chindwin River by watercraft and inspected extension and maintenance tasks for the 56-mile Hkamti-Hsinthay-Lahe regional development road. At Namthegyi camp briefing hall, Capt Aung Myo Myat of local engineering regiment reported to Lt-Gen Ye Myint on completion of tarring of roads and future tasks. Lt-Gen Ye Myint gave instructions on speedy completion of the Hkamti-Lahe road which is important for development of Lahe Township. Altogether 14 miles and four furlongs of the road has been tarred and 21 miles and two furlongs gravelled.
Lt-Gen Ye Myint and party, after inspecting the paving tasks, visited the project site for extension of Hkamti Airport runway. Officials concerned conducted them around there. They arrived at Theravada Buddhist Missionary (Central) monastery and paid obeisance and offered provisions to member Sayadaw of Sagaing Division Working Committee of the Sangha Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja, Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pandita of Zeebyugon monastery, Sayadaw Bhaddanta Tiloka of Aungmyay Thazan monastery and Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kela of Myoma monastery in Hkamti.
On arrival at the District Hospital on Yongyi Road in the town, Lt-Gen Ye Myint and party looked around the oral unit, out-patient department and women's ward. Lt-Gen Ye Myint comforted the patients.
Next, Lt-Gen Ye Myint inspected the construction site of the 100-bed Hkamti District Hospital.
At 5.20 pm, Lt-Gen Ye Myint visited the training school for development of national youths of the Education and Training Department of the Ministry for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs in the town. Secretary of the Training School Supervisory Committee Capt Kyin Hsaing reported matters on the school, and District Peace and Development Council Chairman Lt-Col Htin Aung Kyaw on implementation of the instructions given on the previous visit.
Lt-Gen Ye Myint gave instructions on taking care of the students with goodwill. He urged the officials to render assistance in developing the school as well as the agriculture and livestock breeding tasks. He also urged the students to study lessons earnestly to be able to participate in the regional development tasks effectively in the future. Later, Lt-Gen Ye Myint and Commander Maj-Gen Soe Naing presented exercise books and cash for the students through Principal U Tin Maung and monitors.
At Hachun Hall of Hkamti Station, Lt-Gen Ye Myint met officials and other ranks of Hkamti Station. He urged them to actively take part in implementing the five rural development tasks and the regional development tasks. Next, Lt-Gen Ye Myint and Commander Maj-Gen Soe Naing presented exercise books for the children of Tatmadawmen of the station through Col Min Swe and stopped over for the night in Hkamti.
Samalauk Peasant Hospital, Maubin Hospital inspected
Yangon, 23 March - Minister for Health Dr Kyaw Myint inspected Samalauk Peasant Hospital in Nyaungdon Township this morning.
The minister and party inspected patient ward, greening tasks for the hospital and its environs, out-patient department, Ultrasound Room, X-ray unit, laboratory and dental clinics. Division Health Department Officer Dr Than Aung and officials conducted the minister and party round there. The minister fulfilled the needs.
Similarly, they inspected 200-bed district hospital construction project in Maubin. Managing Director U Ohn Myint of Htut Khaung Development Co Ltd and officials reported on progress of work and measures being taken for the project to them. The minister fulfilled the requirements.
Then, they inspected construction of buildings at the construction site and gave instructions on timely completion of the project and meeting the set standards.
Next, they inspected operation rooms, out-patient department, oral treatment centre, laboratory, blood bank and X-ray room at the hospital and gave instructions on measures to be taken for development of public's knowledge in implementing health educative sector there.
Afterward, they inspected health care tasks for patients, treatment of patients, operation ward, menstrual disorder ward and special treatment rooms round the hospital. Officer of District Health Department Dr Thein Wai and specialists conducted them round there and the minister gave instructions on coordination with regional organizations for raising tasks of hospital and greening tasks.
In his meeting with Dr Thein Wai, specialists and nurses at the hospital, the officer of district health department reported on the strength of staff, measures being taken and needs to the minister.The minister acknowledged that the staff are serving the interest of the State dutifully and gave instructions on making efforts in the interests of the people with goodwill.
Construction of rural roads, development works inspected
Yangon, 23 March - Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt inspected civil and rural development works in Mandalay Division yesterday.
The minister inspected the construction of gravel road from Saga-inn roundabout to Ngazinyaing village in TadaU Township and gave necessary instructions. Next, he attended the opening ceremony of 2-inch tubewell at Kume east village in Myittha Township and 4-inch tubewell at Myinsaing village in Kyaukse Township.
The minister also attended the opening of district hospital circular road in Kyaukse and inspected Zawgyi river water storing dam project.
The minister also attended the meeting to coordinate measures for constructing rural roads and bridges and for sinking rural tubewells in Mandalay Division.
Over US$ 23.3 million fetched from sales of jade, gem and pearl
Yangon, 23 March - Chairman of Central Committee for Holding the 40th Myanma Gems Emporium Deputy Minister for Mines U Myint Thein viewed sale of pearl lots through tender system and competitive bidding system being held at the Myanma Gems Emporium Hall for the last day this morning. At the emporium, 16 lots of pearl were sold for US$ 68,977 till noon.
Lots of jade, gem and pearl were sold through tender system and competitive bidding system starting from 15 March up to date. The emporium fetched US$ 14.227093 million for 446 lots of jade, US$ 7.578252 million for 48 lots of gems and US$ 68,977 for 16 lots of pearl. Sale of jade figurines and gems and jewellery at fixed price amounted to US$ 1.447080 million. The emporium fetched a total of US$ 23.321402 million. The emporium concluded successfully.
A total of 1062 local and foreign gem merchants- 622 from 246 firms of 18 foreign countries and 440 from 162 local firms bought the gems at the emporium.
Myanma Industrial Development Seminar continues
Yangon, 23 March - Seminar on Myanma Industrial Development to mark Myanma Industrial Exhibition-2003 continued on 21 March for the third day at Mandalay University.
The resource persons submitted papers on industrial development and marketing measures, foreign market and Myanma rice, endeavours for Myanma industrial development, arrangements for rural industrial development and points to be pondered for the development of rice milling and answered the queries raised by those present. The work committee for organizing Myanma Industrial Exhibition conducted the seminar attracting officials of the departments and enterprises and industrial zones, students and observers. Deputy Director-General of the Central Statistical Organization of the Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development U Aung Myint Thein (Retd) presided over the seminar.
Myanma Industrial Exhibition continues in Mandalay
Yangon, 23 March - Myanma Industrial Exhibition- 2003 continued at Hsinbyukan grounds in Mandalay on 21 March for its third day.
At the exhibition, the booths of ministries, industrial zones and industrial entrepreneurs are shown. Private shops are selling household things, cosmetics, consumer goods and electronic appliances.
At the booth of the Ministry of Industry-2, the five objectives laid down by Head of State Senior General Than Shwe while meeting with the members of Myanma Industrial Development Committee on 12 July, 1995 are shown.
Raw materials used in manufacturing tyres and finished tyres are displayed at the booth of Myanma Tyre and Rubber Industries.
At the booth of Myanma Industrial Construction Services, progress of work implemented from 1988 to February 2003 is on display.
At Myanma Machine Tool and Electrical Industries booth, petroleum gas containers, batteries, dry cells, bulbs and electric stoves, rice cookers, equipment installed at the Paung soap factory and diesel generators are displayed.
At the booth of Myanma Agricultural Machinery Industries, 15-horse power diesel engines and parts are also shown.
Things being displayed at the booth of Myanma Automobile and Diesel Engine Industries are motorcars and spare parts manufactured by Indagaw Industrial Zone and other workshops.
Moreover, at the exhibition Shwpaukkan Industrial Zone in North Okkalapa Township displays farm machinery, import substitute items, transformers, home decoration, paints, traditional medicines and jackets and North Oakkalapa Industrial Zone sewing machines, electrical appliances, clocks and parts.
Transformers ranging from 50 to 1000 KVA manufactured by Soe Electronics and Machine Tool Co are also displayed. Shwe Bo Minthamee Co is selling thanakha (Myanma traditional make-up).
Similarly, Win Thuza Shop is opened at the exhibition, and it sells consumer products and medicines. Hailing the exhibition, sports competitions, Ozi and Dobat contests and other entertainment programmes are held.
117 girl students to enter nunhood
Yangon, 23 March - A total of 117 girl students from No 2 Basic Education High School, Latha Township, entered nunhood temporarily today at Maha Dhamma Beikman in Shwe Min Wun Sasana Yeiktha in Bahan Township here.
Present on the occasion were Shwe Min Wun Sasana Yeiktha Monastery Presiding Sayadaw Maha Kamma Thanacariya Bhaddanta Sobhana, Sayadaws and members of the Sangha, Minister for Education U Than Aung, No 1 Basic Education Department Director-General U Tin Nyo, No 3 Basic Education Department Deputy Director-General U Aye Myint and departmental officials, Headmistress Daw Khin Ohn Myint of Latha Township No 2 BEHS, teachers, members of the school board of trustees, members of the parents & teachers association of the school and guests.
Minister for Education U Than Aung and party presented offertories to the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha.

Yangon, 23 March - The Qualifier of the Asian Cup soccer tourney continued in Maldives today.
Selected Brunei Team was thrashed 5-0 by Selected Myanmar Team in the match.
Laos wins championship in ASEAN U-14 soccer tournament
Yangon, 23 March - The final match of the ASEAN Youth U-14 Championship 2003 Thailand continued in Bangkok, Thailand. In the match, Laos youth team beat Myanmar youth team 2-1.
Drug
Drugs addict treatment centre opened in Tachilek
Yangon, 20 March -The opening ceremony of community based drugs addict treatment centre organized by Myanmar Anti-Narcotics Association was held on 20 March at Hway Lay Lan village in Mongphone Village-tract, in Tachilek Township with an address by regional Tactical Commander Col Than Shain.
Now, there are 27 drug addicts being given treatment at the centre.
It was attended by Chairman of Tachilek District Drug Abuse Control Committee Tachilek District Peace and Development Council Chairman Lt-Col Aung Nyunt Thein and members, departmental officials, members of social organizations and local people.
