Local administrative bodies urged to prove their work of serving public interest with deeds Prime Minister General Soe Win inspects Myittha and Manipura multipurpose dam projects

Nay Pyi Taw, 29 Jan - Prime Minister General Soe Win inspected Myittha and Manipura multipurpose dam projects in Magway and Sagaing divisions on 27 January.

Accompanied by member of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Ye Myint, Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander of North-West Command Maj-Gen Tha Aye, ministers, deputy ministers, Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Office Col Phone Maw Shwe and officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, Prime Minister General Soe Win inspected Myittha River Multipurpose Dam project being implemented near Pyintha village in Gangaw Township in Magway Division, on 27 January.

Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Htay Oo reported to the Prime Minister on salient points of the project and progress in implementing it sector-wise; Minister for Electric Power No 2 Maj-Gen Khin Maung Myint on power distribution plans. Col Phone Maw Shwe and Commander Maj-Gen Tha Aye also took part in the discussions.

In response to the reports, the Prime Minister discussed early completion of the project, construction of the irrigation network soon after the completion of the dam, power supply through the national grid.

The project will generate 40 megawatts and irrigate 12,000 acres of land.

In Gangaw, the Prime Minister and party visited the hospital where Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo and the medical superintendent explained the requirements in upgrading the 50-bed hospital into a 100-bed facility.

The Prime Minister made arrangements to facilitate the work of systematically upgrading the hospital. Later, he met with departmental personnel, social organizations and townselders, explaining the aims of his tour to help facilitate regional development undertakings, the government's endeavours for equal development of all the regions of the nation, the transformation of local administrative bodies, the importance of making harmonious efforts for transition to democracy in accord with the adopted work programmes. Local administrative bodies should prove their work of serving public interest with deeds.

Local authorities discussed transport, health and education the basic sectors for regional development.

The Prime Minister said that the 50-bed hospital has been upgraded to a 100-bed facility and regional motor roads and railroads have been improved. Necessary medicines and medical equipment have been provided to the station hospital and rural dispensaries.

The government has already planned to open a technical institute in Gangaw to bring out technicians and intellectual human resources. Local people should understand the government's goodwill, and should strive for regional economic development.

Prime Minister General Soe Win and party viewed the building of diversion tunnels and preparations to implement the Manipura Multipurpose Dam Project in Kalay Township, Sagaing Division.

Minister Maj-Gen Htay Oo reported on data of the project, tasks undertaken by Irrigation Department and cooperation with the Ministry of Electric Power No 1 in hydel power projects, Director of Construction 4 of Irrigation Department U Victor on construction of a diversion tunnel and a hydel power tunnel and Minister for Electric Power No 1 Col Zaw Min on the coordination with Irrigation Department.

The Prime Minister called on making efforts for early completion of the major projects like Htamanthi and Manipura.

Manipura Dam is being built on Manipura River, three miles away from Kabarni Bridge in Kalay Township.

Manipura Dam Multi-purpose Project is being undertaken with the aim of generating 380 megawatts, protecting Myittha River plain and the lower part of Kalay from flooding yearly and supplying water to some 50,000 acres of farmland.

The Prime Minister and party went to Alaungtaw Kassapa National Park in Kani and offered gold robes to the Buddha Image. The Prime Minister donated cash to members of the board of trustees.

They went to Alaungtaw Kassapa Cave and offered lights to the image and presented offertories to members of the Sangha.

They arrived back Nay Pyi Taw from Monywa yesterday.

Secretary-General of the Union Solidarity and Development Association U Htay Oo and party met secretaries and members of division, district and township USDAs at Sagaing Division USDA Office in Monywa on 26 January.

Joint-Secretary of Division USDA Dr Win Myint Aung and secretaries reported on measures undertaken by the associations.

Secretariat Member U Thein Zaw, CEC members Thura U Aye Myint and U Aung Min spoke during the meeting.

On 26 January, Minister for Information Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan inspected Sagaing Division Information and Public Relations Department and met service personnel of IPRD and Myanma Motion Pictures Enterprise.

Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo inspected the People�s Hospital in Homalin Township.

Commander inspects water supply tasks for cultivation of summer paddy in Pyinmana District

Nay Pyi Taw, 29 Jan - Commander of Nay Pyi Taw Command Brig-Gen Wai Lwin together with Chairman of Pyinmana District Peace and Development Council U Khin Maung Zaw and responsible personnel inspected preparations for water supply for cultivation of summer paddy on 27 January.

First, Assistant Director of Irrigation Department U Myo Myint Aung briefed the commander on water supply tasks. In connection with the reports, the commander gave instructions on extended cultivation of summer paddy.

Next, the commander oversaw cultivation of summer paddy with the use of direct seeding methods. Yezin dam will supply irrigated water necessary for cultivation of 6,300 acres of summer paddy.

After inspecting water supply tasks at Ngalaik dam, the commander fulfilled the requirements of the local peasants. Ngalaik dam will supply irrigated water to cultivate 10,000 acres of summer paddy.

At the water pumping project in Shan Village of Lewe, Assistant Director of Pyinmana District Water Resources Utilization Department U Zaw Htay briefed the commander on preparations for cultivation of 1,500 acres of summer paddy in Lewe Township.

In response to the reports, Chairman of Pyinmana District PDC U Khin Maung Zaw gave a supplementary report.

Afterwards, the commander and party inspected tasks for pumping water from Paunglong river. Pyinmana District expected to cultivate 32,500 acres of summer paddy for 2006-2007.

Seven NLD members of Danubyu Township collectively resign on their own volition

Yangon, 29 Jan - Seven members namely U Aung Nyein, U Aye Kyi and U Maung Oo of Ohnpinkwin village, U Soe Tint of Yekyi village, U Chit Win of Kanngugyi village, U Tint Lwin of Tamyar village and U Shwe Win of Ngabatai village of National League for Democracy from Danubyu Township, Ayeyawady Division collectively signed letters of resignation on their own volition on 9 January.

They sent their letters of resignation to NLD Headquarters and authorities concerned. The letters of resignation sent to Danubyu Township Multi-party Democracy General Election Commission said that they resigned from the NLD party on their own desire because they became disappointed at the acts of NLD party, and they lost confidence in the NLD party and its leaders.

Production process of No 1 Tyre and Rubber Factory inspected

Nay Pyi Taw, 29 Jan- Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin arrived at No 1 Tyre and Rubber Factory in Thaton Township on 26 January.

At the briefing hall, Factory General Manager U Myint Naing reported to the minister on the target of tyre production in 2006-2007 fiscal year, monthly tyre production and collection of raw materials.

The minister gave instructions on systematic measures to be taken for meeting the target production, collecting of raw materials, minimizing of production cost, and preparations for operating of the machine at full capacity.

Forestry Minister inspects Finished Wood Product Factories in Dagon Myothit (Seikkan) Township

Yangon, 28 Jan- Minister for Forestry Brig-Gen Thein Aung arrived at Finished Wood Product Factory No 2 of LinWin Co Ltd, Industrial Zone-2, in Dagon Myothit (Seikkan) Township, here, this morning.

At the briefing hall, Managing Director of the factory reported on work being carried out and Managing Director U Win Maung of Myanma Timber Enterprise gave a supplementary report, and the minister gave necessary instructions.

The minister inspected the running of the factory, production of furniture used in gardens and furniture and sawn timber to be exported. With the investment of US $ 0.5 million and over K 400 million, the factory is exporting furniture made of teak and sawn timber to Germany, France, Italy, England and Asian countries. The minister and party next visited Finished Wood Product Factory of Myanmar Technologies Industry Co Ltd. Managing Director of the factory reported on facts about the factory.

The managing director of Myanma Timber Enterprise gave a supplementary report and the minister gave necessary instructions and viewed production line and packing of sawn timber to be exported. The factory with the investment of US $ 0.2 million and over K 300 million is exporting sawn teak to France, Italy, Denmark and Sweden.

Last season's finalist Shan (South) snatches shield defeating Magway 4-2

Yangon, 29 Jan - A final match in conjunction with a prize presentation ceremony of the 52nd Union Shield Inter-State/Division Men's Football Tournament (Open) took place at Youth Training Camp (Thuwunna) this evening.

Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint watched the final match and attended the prize presentation ceremony.

Shan (South) picked up a Union Shield after success over Magway with 4-2 in the final match.

The prize pre-sentation ceremony followed. Director U Naw Taung of Sports and Physical Education Department presented third prize to Sagaing, Deputy Director-General of SPED U Thein Aung, second to runners-up Magway, General Secretary of MOC Director-General of SPED U Thaung Htaik, first to champions Shan (South) and President of Myanmar Football Federation U Zaw Zaw, medals and cash awards to best situational players throughout the tournament.

Next, Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint handed a fair play award K 300,000 as well as prize money K 1 million to third placed winners Sagaing, K 1.5 million to runners-up Magway and K 2.5 million to champions Shan (South).

PBANRDA Dy Minister leaves for Bangkok

Nay Pyi Taw, 29 Jan - A delegation led by Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Tin Ngwe left here for Bangkok, Thailand, on 27 January to participate in 5th ASEAN ministerial meeting on rural areas development and eradication of poverty.

The meeting is scheduled to be held today and tomorrow. The delegation will also attend the preliminary meeting of senior officials from ASEAN+3 nations. The delegation comprises Director-General U Myo Myint and Director U Aye Lwin of the ministry.

They were seen off at Nay Pyi Taw Airport by officials of the ministry.

Information Minister receives guests

Nay Pyi Taw, 29 Jan - Minister for Information Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan received a delegation led by Managing Director of Ntegrator Pte Ltd Mr Jimmy Chang of Republic of Singapore at his office, here, today.

Also present at the call were directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises under the ministry.

34th Buddha Pujaniya of Koedatkyi Buddha Image

Yangon, 28 Jan - The 34th Buddha Pujaniya and Rice Offering ceremony of Atuladipati Maha Munithakya Koedatkyi Buddha Image was held at the Buddha Image on Bagaya Street in Sangyoung Township, here, this afternoon.

Minister for Religious Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung formally opened the Rice Offering ceremony.

It was also attended by Vice-Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Bhaddanta Paññindabhivamsa of Maha Aungmyay Bonsan Monastery and members of the Sangha, officials of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, laypersons and others.

The congregation received the Five Precepts from the Vice-Chairman Sayadaw and shared merits gained.

The minister cut the ribbon to open the Buddha Pujaniya. The minister, departmental officials and wellwishers donated rice and provisions worth K 2.6 million to members of the Sangha.

Yangon, 29 Jan - The seventh meeting of the Fifth State Central Working Committee of the Sangha, the first meeting of the sixth State Central Working Committee of the Sangha and religious title-conferring and rice-offering ceremonies will be held from 26 February to 2 March in Maha Pasana Cave on Thiri Mingala Kaba Aye Hill.

State Ovadha Cariya Sayadaws, member Sayadaws of State Central Working Committee of the Sangha, title-recipient Sayadaws and members of the Sangha totalling about 973 will attend the occasions.

Course on Anaesthesiology on 1st Feb

Yangon, 29 Jan- Myanmar Society of Anaesthesiologists (MSA) of Myanmar Medical Association (MMA) is organizing, in collaboration with the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthe-siologists-Bangkok Anaesthesia Regional Training Centre (WFSA-BARTC), a refresher course on Anaesthe-siology on 1st February 2007 at the Summit Parkview Hotel Ballroom commencing from 0830 hours. All the members of the MSA are cordially invited.

Villager loses leg in mine blast

Nay Pyi Taw, 29 Jan - A villager of MyaungU Village in Kyaukkyi Township lost his left leg in the mine blast near the village on 25 January.

After fishing in a creek near the village, U Kyaw Lwin, 35, went back to his home. On his way home, he stepped on the mine planted by insurgents. An ankle of his left leg was blown off and he was rushed to the Mone Station Hospital.

Insurgents have been committing atrocities to jeopardise the stability of the State, community peace and tranquillity and prevalence of law and order through various means.

The authorities concerned in co-operation with the people are in hot pursuit of the insurgents.

Special sales period extended

Yangon, 29 Jan - The Ministry of Industry-1 extended the special sales period until 3 February in Myaungmya Township, Ayeyawady Division, until 4 February in Hpa-an, Kayin State and until 6 February in North Okkalapa Township, Yangon Division.

Date of meeting of MFPTMA postponed

Yangon, 29 Jan- The Myanmar Forest Products and Timber Merchants Association planned to hold the13th annual meeting at International Business Center on 5 February.

The date of the meeting was postponed and it will be announced later.
