Lt-Gen Khin Maung Than inspects progress of agriculture and construction tasks in Myaungmya, Einme, Pantanaw, Maubin

Nay Pyi Taw, 4 May - Member of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Maung Than of the Ministry of Defence together with Chairman of Ayeyawady Division PDC Commander of South-West Command Maj-Gen Thura Myint Aung made an inspection tour of townships in Ayeyawady division yesterday.

At the local battalion in Myaungmya, Lt-Gen Khin Maung Than met servicemen and family members. He instructed them to uphold Our Three Main National Causes, join hands with the people in building a modern and developed nation, carry out self-reliant agriculture and livestock breeding tasks and provide welfare of the families.

Lt-Gen Khin Maung Than and party attended the harvesting of summer paddy on 52 acres in Kwinya Tagundaing Village of Einme Township. They viewed fertilizers, pesticides, paddy sample, agricultural equipment and the physic nut nursery.

Einme Township grows three crops per year on 2,500 acres and plans to extend cultivation of crops.

At Shwepyitan Hall of the Township General Administration Department, Lt-Gen Khin Maung Than met departmental personnel at district and township levels. Chairman of the Township PDC U Thein Win reported on cultivation of monsoon and summer paddy, rice sufficiency and growing of physic nut, economic and social matters of the township.

In his instructions, Lt-Gen Khin Maung Than said that Einme Township has a large amount of food sufficiency. Growing of physic nut is to be designated as national policy. He stressed the need to cultivate physic nut on 7,500 acres within three years to be able to contribute to implementation of the plan of Ayeyawady Division for growing 500,000 acres of physic nut within three years. He continued to say that the border areas development plan, the 24 special regions development plan and five rural development tasks are being implemented for ensuring equitable development of all parts of the nation. Furthermore, departmental personnel are to make field trips to the grassroots level joining hands with the local people in undertaking rural development tasks.

At the local battalion in Einme, Lt-Gen Khin Maung Than met servicemen and family members, and gave necessary instructions.

At the site of Thongwa Creek Bridge on Einme-Pantanaw Road in Pantanaw Township, they inspected progress of construction tasks. Deputy Superintending Engineer Daw Si Than reported on 60 per cent completion of the tasks.

Thongwa Creek Bridge will be 270 feet long and 24 feet wide. It will be a reinforced concrete bridge and it can withstand 60-ton loads.

Next, Lt-Gen Khin Maung Than and party attended the harvesting of summer paddy in Alan Village of Maubin Township and heard reports on arrangements for cultivation of monsoon and summer paddy presented by Township Manager U Myo Wai of Myanma Agriculture Service.

Later, they greeted local farmers.

17th Annual General Meeting of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association concludes successfully

Yangon, 4 May - The 17th Annual General Meeting of the Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association continued for the second day at the multi-functional building of the association at the corner of Thanthuma and Parami Roads in South Okkalapa Township this morning.

Present at the meeting were President of MMCWA Daw Khin Khin Win, Vice-Presidents Dr Daw Tin Lin Myint and Daw Aye Aye, CEC members, Central Council members, chairpersons, secretaries and joint secretaries of State and Division MCW Supervisory Committees.

Vice-President Dr Daw Tin Lin Myint presided over the meeting, and Secretary Dr Daw Wai Wai Tha acted as MC.

First, the papers on case studies of the State and Division MCWSCs were submitted to the meeting. Secretary of Chin State Maternal and Child Welfare Supervisory Committee Dr Khin Maung Si, Secretary of Sagaing Division MCWSC Dr Kyaw Shein, Secretary Dr Maung Maung Hla of Taninthayi Division MCWSC, Secretary of Bago Division (East) MCWSC Dr Htay Aung, Secretary Dr Ngwe San of Bago Division (West) MCWSC and Secretary of Magway Division MCWSC Dr Maung Maung Aung Kyaw submitted the papers to the meeting. The meeting chairperson discussed matters related to the papers. Next, the meeting took a break at 10.15 am.

When the meeting restarted at 10.30 am, Secretary Dr Khin Maung Tun of Mandalay Division MCWSC, Secretary of Mon State MCWSC Dr Tin Win Kyaw, Secretary Dr Cho Tun of Rakhine State MCWSC, Secretary of Yangon Division MCWSC Dr Hla Myint, Secretary of Shan State (South) MCWSC Dr Sai Kham Hlaing, Secretary of Shan State (North) MCWSC Dr Sai San Win, Secretary of Shan State (East) MCWSC Dr Myint Aung and Secretary of Ayeyawady Division MCWSC Dr Swe Win also submitted their papers to the meeting. Meeting chairperson Vice-President Dr Daw Tin Lin Myint gave necessary instructions.

In the afternoon session, President of MMCWA Daw Khin Khin Win presided over the meeting. To adopt the future tasks, members of the Central Council gave suggestions on taking care of education, health, economic and social matters for mothers, children and their families from States and Divisions.

Next, Meeting Chairperson President Daw Khin Khin Win explained the future tasks of the association, and those present discussed four resolutions and 12 future work programmes. Afterwards, they adopted the decisions.

President Daw Khin Khin Win gave the concluding remarks.

The 17th Annual General Meeting of the MMCWA successfully concluded in the evening.

The Annual General Meeting approved three matters, decided four matters and adopted 12 future tasks.

Special storm news

Yangon, 4 May-The Meteorology and Hydrology Department today announced that according to the observations conducted at 18:30 hour, the tropical storm that had been centered at east central Bay of Bengal passed through coastal regions of the delta and has now reduced itself into a tropical depression.

Under the influence of the tropical depression, rain will likely be widespread in Mon and Kayin states, and Ayeyawady, Yangon, Bago and Taninthayi divisions, and isolated to be scattered in Rakhine, Kayah and Shan states and Magway and Mandalay divisions with likelihood of scattering heavyfalls in the remaining states and divisions and heavyfalls in specific parts of Rakhine State, and Yangon and Bago divisions.

Sometimes squalls with moderate to rough sea are likely to be along the Myanmar coast and deep sea. Surface wind speed in squalls may reach about 40 mph.

Industry-1 Minister inspects factories in Magway Div

Nay Pyi Taw, 4 May - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, accompanied by officials inspected Textile Factory (Pwintbyu) under Myanma Textile Industries in Pwintphyu Township, Magway Division on 2 May.

At the briefing hall of the factory, Factory Manager U Aung Kyaw Oo reported on production of the factory, running of the factory at full capacity and strength of the staff, and General Manager U Hla Tun on collection of raw materials to minister.

The minister called for manufacture of quality products, collective efforts for running of the factory at full capacity, and presented gift to the outstanding staff. On arrival at Hydrogenperoxide Factory (Chauk) of Myanma Paper and Chemical Industries, the minister heard reports on production of the factory by Managing Director U Nyunt Aung and officials. The minister attended to the needs of the factory.

Minister U Aung Thaung and party proceeded to Advanced Strain Insulator Factory Project (Chauk) of Myanma Ceramics Industries and gave instructions to officials.

Afterwards, they went to Win Thuza shop in Seikphyu and inspected the sales of products of the ministry. The minister also oversaw Thit Hseint Oil (belleric myrobalan oil) Factory of Myanma Foodstuff Industries and viewd production process of the factory. Officials conducted them around the factory. The minister called for extensive installation of machinery to the factory.

Secretariat Member meets secretary, executives of Hlinethaya Township USDA

Yangon, 4 May - Secretariat Member of the Union Solidarity and Development Associa-tion Minister for Information Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan met the secretary, executives and ward/village organizers at Hlinethaya Township USDA office this afternoon.

Secretary of the Township USDA U Nyan Win reported on tasks of the township association and tasks being undertaken, and or-ganizers on tasks being carried out at ward and village level associations.

The Secretariat Member fulfilled the requirements and gave necessary instructions.

Next, he presented cash assistance and exercise books to the trainees of the national culture and morale course 2/2007 organized by Hlinethaya Township USDA, and cordially greeted the members.

ACMECS Foreign Ministers' Meeting held in Mandalay

Nay Pyi Taw, 4 April-The Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS) Foreign Ministers' Meeting took place in Mandalay today.

It was attended by Mr Huy Kanthoul Vora, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Cambodia, Dr Thongloun Sisoulith, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Lao People' Democratic Republic, U Nyan Win, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Union of Myanmar, Mr Nitya Pibulsonggram, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand and Mr Pham Gia Khiem, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Social Republic of Vietnam.

As part of preparation for holding the ACMECS Ministerial Meeting, a senior officials' meeting was organized in Mandalay yesterday. The participants discussed cooperative matters under ACMECS and the Joint Statement of the ACMECS Foreign Ministers' Meeting.

The ACMECS Foreign Ministers' Meeting was held at Sedona Hotel in Mandalay today. Minister U Nyan Win presided over the meeting. The meeting was held in the usual spirit of friendship, good neighborliness and mutual cooperation among the ACMECS member countries.

The ministers reaffirmed their strong political commitment and desire to strengthen the aims and objectives of the Bagan Declaration, to increase competitiveness, narrow economic disparity and promote socio-economic development in the sub-region, and to realize the Bagan Declaration efficiently and effectively. They also exchanged views on cooperation in areas such as trade and investment facilitation, agriculture, industry, energy, transport linkages, tourism, public health and human resource development. They expressed their desire to attain prosperity in the region trough enhanced solidarity, mutual respects, good neighborliness and active cooperation among the member countries.

At the end of the meeting, a joint statement was issued.

During the meeting days, the Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Thai Minister of Foreign Affairs called on Minister for Foreign Affairs U Nyan Win separately. They discussed promotion of bilateral relationships.

Yesterday, they participated in the friendly golf tournament at Mandalay Hill Golf Resort. The ministers paid homage to Maha Muni Buddha Image and visited downtown. Mandalay. Minister U Nyan Win hosted a dinner in honour of the ministers and delegation members of ACMECS.

ACMECS was formed in 2003 following the Bagan Summit in Myanmar.

The Heads of Government of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand attended it. The objectives of the ACMECS are to promote sustainable economy and to uplift the welfare and quality of life of the people in the sub-region. Vietnam joined the group in 2004.

MMCWA's 17th Annual General Meeting passes four resolutions, lays down 12 future work programmes

Yangon, 4 May-The 17th Annual General Meeting of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association was held at the meeting hall of the association at the corner of Thanthuma and Parami Roads in South Okkalapa Township yesterday and today.

The meeting passed four resolutions and laid down 12 future work programmes.

The four resolutions are:

1. To participate in the drive for successful realization of the seven-point Road Map

2. To follow the instructions of National Health Committee as work guidelines,

3. To make strenuous efforts in anticipation of the long-term interest in addressing health problems in line with the motto ?Invest in health for future life security? utilizing the resources of the MMCWA,

4. To cooperate with the government bodies and congenial organizations such as social organizations at home and abroad in implementing the tasks of the association.

The 12 future work programmes are:

1. Every pregnant woman is to be taken care of in order to reduce the maternal and child mortality rate, to ensure timely referring of critical pregnant women and to cooperate, educate and aid pregnant women to be able to give birth with the help of medical staff (especially in rural areas and outskrits of towns),

2. To continue to produce local midwives,

3. To hold educative talks to be able to early expose child cancer and to give it treatment,

4. To enable the people to practically perform the individual protection programmes in preventing bird flu as well as malaria, TB and HIV/AIDS as part of the infectious disease preventive measures,

5. To impart knowledge on nutrition for family health and to enable family members to cook wholesome foods,

6. To strive for all families to engage in sanitation tasks, to have access to potable water and to fly-proof latrines cent per cent,

7. To ask families to attend courses on methods to grow herbal plants and courses on traditional medicines for providing health care to family members,

8. To participate in school health care movements, to create a healthy environment, to designate garbage-free schools, aedes free schools to prevent dengue hemorrhage fever, and tobacco-free schools,

9. To open more pre-primary schools for all-round development of children, to help all school-age children have access to and complete primary education, and to provide them with assistance for middle and high school education,

10. To find out illiterates and help them become literate ones, and to expedite post-literacy programmes,

11. To open more micro-credit scheme for greater income of the families and vocational training courses,

12. To mobilize participation of members of the Maternal and Child Welfare Association as well as heads of ten-house units in expediting health, education, social and economic services and in post-literacy programmes, and for heads of ten-house units to help submit infant mortality records to nearest health department.

Dinner hosted to mark completion of 17th AGM of MMCWA

Yangon, 4 May - A dinner to mark the completion of the 17th Annual General Meeting of the Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association was held at the multi-functional building of the association at the corner of Thanthuma and Parami Roads in South Okkalapa Township this evening.

Also present at the dinner were Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Hla Htay Win, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Paing Soe, patrons of the association, the President, the Vice-Presidents and CEC members, chair-persons, secretaries and joint secretaries of State and Division Maternal and Child Welfare Super-visory Committees, re-sponsible persons of social organizations and guests.

First, President of the association Daw Khin Khin Win spoke words of thanks, and presented gifts to Deputy Minister Dr Paing Soe.

Next, the deputy minister presented the first prize for outstanding activities in 2006 to Mandalay Division, the second prize to Yangon Division, the third prize to Ayeyawady Division and consolation prizes to Bago Division (East) and Taninthayi Division.

President Daw Khin Khin Win also awarded the first prize to Mon State for its outstanding activities for 2006, the second prize to Shan State (South), the third prize to Shan State (East) and consolation prizes to Kachin State and Shan State (North).

Vice-President Dr Daw Tin Lin Myint gave the first prize in paper reading session to Yangon Division, the second prize to Shan State (South), the third prize to Mandalay Division and consolation prizes to Rakhine State and Kayah State.

Vice-President of the association Daw Aye Aye presented division level special health prize (fly-proof latrine) to Mandalay Division and state level special health prize to Shan State (South).

CEC member Daw Htwe Htwe Nyunt presented gifts to literati who edited manuscripts for Myitta Sanyay magazine of the association. Secretary Dr Daw Wai Wai Tha also gave cash reward to Myanma Athan Modern Band that performed entertainment at the dinner.

Later, the guests were served with dinner.

Secretary-General meets USDA members in Thaton

Nay Pyi Taw, 3 May - Secretary-General U Htay Oo of Union Solidarity and Development Association together with secretaries and executives of Thaton district/township USDAs, departmental officials and Pa-O nationals paid respects to Sayadaw Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Bhaddanta Khemacara of Pokebayon monastery in Thaton and supplicated on the religious matters on 29 April. The Secretary-General and party donated provisions to the monastery.

Next, the Secretary-General met with Paung Township USDA executives and members, the chairmen of Thaton district and Paung township PDCs, local people and members of social organizations at the office of the association in Paung Township, Thaton District.

In his saying at the meeting, the Secretary-General said that the association is carrying out regional development tasks in cooperation with the local people upholding ?Our Three Main National Causes?. He urged them to participate in realizing stability of the nation, economic growth of the people and promotion of education.

Bangladeshi delegation visits shrimp and fish breeding farms

Yangon, 4 May -The visiting seven-member Bangladeshi delegation led by Chairman Mr Syed Mahmudual Hug of Shrimp and Fish Foundation of Republic of Bangladesh together with officials of the Fisheries Department viewed processing of shrimp and fish at May Yu cold storage and processing factory in South Dagon Industrial Zone on 2 May.

The delegation called on Director-General U Khin Maung Aye of Fisheries Department and officials at the Fisheries Department on Hsinmin Road in Ahlon Township and held discussions on processing marine products and breeding works.

Later they visited the laboratory of the department in Thakayta Township and officials viewed them round the laboratory.

They also visited GIC cold storage in Hlinethaya Industrial Zone and Htoo Thit Shrimp and Fish Feedstuff Factory and Ngwepinle Jetty in Shwepyitha Industrial Zone.

The Bangladeshi delegation made study tour of Asia Thar Fresh Water Shrimp and Fish Breeding Farm, Top Success Fresh Water Fish Breeding Farm and Fresh Water Shrimp and Fish Breeding Farm of GWE Co Ltd in Nyaungdon, Ayeyawady Division, yesterday.

Next, they called on Director-General of Department of Livestock and Fisheries Chairman of Livestock Breeding and Fisheries Development Bank U Kyaw Lwin, Director-General U Khin Maung Aye and officials of Fisheries Department and held discussions on boosting marine products trade.

Hydropower project implemented on Chebwe Creek in Kachin State

Nay Pyi Taw, 4 May - Hydropower Project Implementation Department and China Power Investment Corporation (CPI) started construction of a hydropower plant on Chebwe Creek in Kachin State on 30 April.

The project, which is expected to generate 65 MW on completion, is built to supply power to the construction of seven hydro-power projects to be built on the confluence of Ayeyawady River and Maykha and Malikha rivers.

Hydropower Project Implementation Department under the Ministry of Electric Power No 1 and CPI of the People's Republic of China will build the seven hydropower projects - a 3,600-MW-project on Ayeyawady confluence, a 2000-MW-project in Chibwe, a 1,600-MW-project in Pashe, a 1,400-MW-project in Lakin, a 1,500-MW-project in Phizaw, a 1,700-MW-project in Khaunglanphu and a 1,560-MW-project in Laiza - in Kachin State. Upon completion, all projects are expected to generate 13,360 MW in total.

The ground breaking ceremony was opened with an address by Chairman of Kachin State Peace and Development Council Commander of Northern Command Maj-Gen Ohn Myint and Minister for Electric Power No 1 Col Zaw Min.

Also present on the occasion were Minister for Forestry Brig-Gen Thein Aung, Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Thein Zaw, Minister for Electric Power No 2 Maj-Gen Khin Maung Myint, Deputy Minister for Electric Power No 1 U Myo Myint, officials of CPI and local people.

The commander, the ministers and the vice president of CPI Mr Shi Chengliang formally opened the ceremony, and the commander unveiled the signboard of the project.

Myanmar Brewery staff donate blood

Yangon, 4 May - A total of 140 family members of Myanmar Brewery Limited collectively donated blood for the second time at the hall of the factory of Myanmar Brewery Limited to mark 10th anniversary of the company today.

Present on the occasion were Dr U Win Aung and members of Medical Research Department (Lower Myanmar), doctors and nurses of National Blood Centre.

General Manager Mr Peter Ong of the limited extended greetings.

The general manager donated K 3 million to the National Blood Centre of Yangon General Hospital. Dr Daw Thida Aung accepted the cash donation and expressed thanks for their contribution.

After that, the general manager and party encouraged the staff members donating blood.
