Independence Day

Council of the Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing
Kyaing hosted a dinner to mark the 60th Anniversary Independence Day at the City
Hall, here, this evening. At 6.30 pm, Senior General Than Shwe arrived at the
City Hall where the dinner to mark the 60th Anniversary Independence Day was to
be held. Vice- Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Vice-Senior
General Maung Aye, SPDC member General Thura Shwe Mann of the Ministry of
Defence, Prime Minister General Thein Sein, Secretary- 1 of the SPDC Lt-Gen
Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo, diplomats led by Acting Dean of the Diplomatic
Corps Pakistani Ambassador Mr Muhammad Nawaz Chaudhry and their wives welcomed
the Senior General. Also present at the dinner were Vice- Chairman of the State
Peace and Development Council Vice-Senior General Maung Aye, SPDC member General
Thura Shwe Mann of the Ministry of Defence and wife, Prime Minister General
Thein Sein and wife, Secretary- 1 Lt-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo and wife,
SPDC members and their wives, the Commander- in-Chief (Navy), the
Commander-in-Chief (Air) and senior military officers of the Ministry of Defence
and their wives, the Commander of Nay Pyi Taw Command, ministers and wives, the
Auditor-General, the Chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board, the
Mayor of Nay Pyi Taw, deputy ministers and their wives, directors-general of the
SPDC Office, Government Office, President Office, Pyithu Hluttaw Office and
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, diplomats led by Acting Dean of the Diplomatic

and Subcommittees for Organizing the 60th Anniversary Independence Day, regional

At the reception and before and during the dinner, those present
at the dinner were entertained with songs entertained by vocalists to the
accompaniment of the Myanma Athan modern music band.

NAY PYI TAW, 4 Jan - In accordance with the Five National
Objectives of the 60th Anniversary Independence Day - All the national people to
constantly join hands for safeguarding the perpetuation of independence and
sovereignty of the State; All the national people to collectively strive for
non-disintegration of the Union and non-disintegration of national solidarity;
To ensure emergence of an enduring constitution in line with the fundamental
principles and detailed basic principles adopted by the national Convention that
has been completed successfully; All the national people to harmoniously make
all-out efforts for building of a modern, developed disc i p l i n e - f l o u r
i s h i n g democratic nation; and All the national people to cooperate in
realizing the State’s seven step Road Map with Union Spirit, patriotic spirit
and the spirit of sacrifice - the State Flag hoisting and saluting ceremony was
held at the City Hall, here, this morning.
Present on the occasion were Member of the State Peace and
Development Council Lt-Gen Kyaw Win of the Ministry of Defence, Adjutant-General
Maj-Gen Thura Myint Aung, Commander of Nay Pyi Taw Command Maj- Gen Wai Lwin,
ministers, the Chief Justice, the Attorney- General, the Joint Secretary-General
of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Secretariat members and CEC
members, deputy ministers, the Deputy Chief Justices, the Deputy Attorneys-
General, members of Civil Service Selection and Training Board, senior military
officers from the Ministry of Defence, the Myanmar Police Force
Director-General, departmental heads of the SPDC Office,the Government Office,
the Supreme Court, the Attorney-General’s Office and the CSSTB Office,
regional coordinators of State and Division USDAs, members of the subcommittee
for organizing the ceremony and work groups, Nay Pyi Taw Development Committee
members, rectors and principals, local authorities, education officers,
secretaries and executives of district and township USDAs, members of social
organizations, service personnel, national race representatives in Nay Pyi Taw
Pyinmana Township and local people, totalling 4,963.
First, the ceremony to hoist the State Flag of the 60th
Anniversary Independence Day-2008 was held at 4.20 am today.
The State Flag hoisting group hoisted the Flag flanked by
national races. As the State Flag saluting ceremony started at 7 am, the Guard
of Honour of Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) took the designated place in front of
the City Hall.
Chairman of the Central Committee for Organizing the 60th
Anniversary Independence Day Secretary-1 of SPDC Lt-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung
Myint Oo took the designated place on the dais. After taking the salute of the
Guard of Honour, the Secretary-1 together with the people saluted the State
Flag. Meanwhile, the Band of the Guard of Honour played the national anthem.
The Guard of Honour paid tribute to the fallen leaders and
soldiers and took the four oaths.
The Secretary-1 read out the message sent by Chairman of the
State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe on the occasion of
the 60th Anniversary Independence Day.
After the Secretary- 1 had taken the salute of the Guard of
Honour, the ceremony ended.
On the eve of the 60th Anniversary Independence Day, it could be
seen that ministries, Nay Pyi Taw City Hall, Thabyegon Roundabout, Lotus
Roundabout, Raza Thingaha Roundabout, Nay Pyi Taw Myoma Market, Thabyegon
Market, buildings and staff quarters were illuminated with colourful lights.

sports competitions mark 60th Anniversary Independence Day
NAY PYI TAW, 4 Jan - To mark the 60th Anniversary Independence
Day 2008, the Second Inter-Ministry Marathon Race was held in front of Nay Pyi
Taw Myoma Market this morning.
Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports
Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint launched the marathon.
General Secretary of MOC Director- General U Thaung Htaik of the
Sports and Physical Education Department and officials presented prizes to the
respective winners.
Likewise, the Inter- Ministry Staff Families Track and Field
Contest was held at Nay Pyi Taw Football Ground No 1. Staff families happily
participated in the 100-m, 200-m, 400-m, 800-m and 5000-m races and traditional
sports events.

NAY PYI TAW, 4 Jan - Union Solidarity and Development Association
CEC member Minister for Forestry Brig- Gen Thein Aung and Kayah State Peace and
Development Council Chairman Brig-Gen Nyunt Tin on 1 January presented
offertories to Pruhso Theravada Buddhist Missionary Nyaungzin Pariyatti
Kyaungtaik Sayadaw Saddhma Jotika Dhaja Bhaddanta Nannisara and donated K 1.1
million for construction of a new monastery building.
Next, they met the local people at Pruhso BEHS No 1 and the CEC
member donated K 200,000 and exercise books and pencils for the school. Kayah
State Maternal and Child Welfare Supervisory Committee Chairperson Daw Tin Kyi
donated iodized salt to the local people.
Afterwards, the CEC member and party donated K 400,000 for the
dental clinic of the township hospital. In the afternoon, they visited
The USDA also donated stationery. Afterwards, the CEC member met
USDA members at Kayah State USDA office in Loikaw and explained work programmes
and resolutions laid down at the USDA Annual General Meeting. Next, the CEC
member and party attended the opening of a new school building of Daw Hsa Hsi
BEPS and made cash donations. The building cost K 38.1 million. They also
visited Loikaw Industrial Ward- 1, met the industrialists and presented
certificates of honour to the outstanding industrialists. Commander Maj- Gen
Thaung Aye, CEC member Brig-Gen Thein Aung and the chairman of Kayah State PDC
paid homage to Loikaw Shwetaung Pariyatti Sarthintaik Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita
Bhaddanta Pannasami. Then they inspected Loikaw Industrial Ward-1.

Day friendly golf tourney takes place
NAY PYI TAW, 4 Jan - Friendly golf tournament between the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs and foreign diplomats to mark the 60th Anniversary
Independence Day took place at Nay Pyi Taw golf course this morning.
Among the competitors were Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister U
Maung Myint, foreign ambassadors to the Union of Myanmar and their wives,
Director- General U Paw Lwin Sein of the Training, Research and Foreign
Languages Department and officials. First, the competitors posed for photos and

Anniversary Independence Day, Tint Hla Pay Han Anyein of
The gold-medal winning Myanma traditional orchestra in the 15th
Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Art Competition first entertained guests
with performances.
Next, members of the Anyein performed various dances and songs,
duals or singles. Lead dancers Shaung Hnin Wai Wai and Myint Myint Khine sang
songs composed by Culture Soe Tint Lwin. Main dancer Zarni Aung sang a song
composed by Thetkkhato Myat Lin (Culture), and comedians Kylama, Lamont, Lapyae
and Sarkalay amused audience with their witty jokes and comedy of manners to the
audience's delight.
