Secretary-1 receives Vice-Chairperson of Standing Committee of NPC and President of Chinese People's Association for Peace and Disarmament

NAY PYI TAW, 11 Jan - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar Lt-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo received Vice-Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) of the People's Republic of China and President of the Chinese People's Association for Peace and Disarmament (CPAPD) Madame He Luli and party, who are currently in Myanmar at the invitation of the Secretary-General of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, at the hall of the State Peace and Development Council Office here at 10.30 am today.

Also present at the call were USDA CEC members Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Nay Pyi Taw Mayor Col Thein Nyunt and Deputy Minister for Transport Col Nyan Tun Aung, Director-General Col Kyaw Kyaw Win of the SPDC Office, Director-General Col Thant Shin of the Government Office and Director-General U Kyaw Kyaw of the Protocol Deparment under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Chinese delegation was accompanied by Chinese Ambassador Mr Guan Mu.

Lt-Gen Myint Swe sees off Myanmar Tatmadaw football team, volleyball team

YANGON, 11 Jan - Lt-Gen Myint Swe of the Ministry of Defence gave instructions to the football team and volleyball team of the Myanmar Armed Forces at Yangon International Airport at 4 pm today before their departure for India to play friendly football and volleyball matches with the teams of the Indian Armed Forces at the invitation of the Indian Armed Forces.

In his speech, Lt-Gen Myint Swe said that under the arrangement of Myanmar-India friendship programme, Myan-mar and Indian Armed Forces have exchanged sports teams for many times. Myanma Tat-madaw teams will play friendly matches for the fourth time, and the teams of Indian Armed Forces have played three times. As it is the friendly matches, players of Myanma Tatmadaw teams are to play the matches with sporting spirit without concentrating on winning and losses. However, Myanmar Tatmadaw players to vigorously compete in the friendly matches to uplift the prestige of the State. All the players are to observe the directives of the leader of the team. The football and volleyball teams are to promote friendly ties between the two countries. In addition, it is necessary to adopt modern sport techniques modern for development of Myanmar sports standard. In conclusion, Lt-Gen Myint Swe stressed the need to cement friendly relationship between the two countries. The 38-member sports contingent of Myanmar Armed Forces led by Vice Adjutant-General Maj-Gen Hla Shwe was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Lt-Gen Myint Swe, Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Hla Htay Win, senior military officers and Defence Attaché Col Manoj Mukund Naravane of the Indian Embassy.

Relations Minister U Aung Kyi meets Daw Aung San Suu Kyi

NAY PYI TAW, 11 Jan - Minister for Labour U Aung Kyi who was assigned as Minister for Relations to liaise with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi met with her at Seinlè Kantha Guest House in Yangon from 1 pm to 2.10 pm today.

Myanmar , UAE consult bilateral air services

YANGON, 11 Jan-Consultations for the conclusion of an air services agreement between the Government of the Union of Myanmar and the Government of the United Arab Emirates were held at the Department of Civil Aviation in Yangon International Airport on 9 and 10 January.

The Myanmar delegation was headed by Director-General U Tun Hlaing of the Department of Civil Aviation of the Ministry of Transport, comprising representatives from the Attorney-General's Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Department of Civil Aviation, Myanma Airways, Myanmar Airways International, Air Bagan, Air Mandalay and Yangon Airways as members and the UAE delegation headed by Air Transport Manager Miss Aysha Al Hamili of the General Civil Aviation Authority of UAE, comprising representatives from the General Civil Aviation Authority of UAE, Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, the Department of Transport of Abu Dhabi, Etihad Airways and Emirates Airline as members.

In the course of consultations the two delegations drafted and agreed on a new Air Services Agreement and also agreed to take continuous actions for the signing of the Agreement after securing the approvals of the respective governments.

The two delegations further agreed on route rights for the designated airlines and, traffic rights between the two countries, traffic rights to and from third country, operation rights for using leased aircraft and rights on airlines cooperation agreement, signing a Memorandum of Understanding. Myanmar Airways International and Air Bagan of the Union of Myanmar and Emirates Airline, Etihad Airways, Air Arabia and RAK Airways of UAE were designated for the operation of air services between the two countries.

The Emirates Airline from UAE is interested in and is planning to operate air services to Yangon . Under the airline cooperation agreement endorsed by the two countries, the Myanmar Airways International and Air Bagan can enjoy the rights as marketing carriers for passengers and cargo transportation in cooperation with Emirates Airline.

This consultation was held under the directive of the Ministry of Transport for the development of air transport, which can enhance the tourism, trade and investment between Myanmar and UAE.

Minister receives Chinese guests

NAY PYI TAW, 11 Jan - Minister for Electric Power No 1 Col Zaw Min received President Mr Lu Wenjun and party of China National Heavy Machinery Corporation (CHMC) of the People's Republic of China at the minister's office this afternoon.

They discussed matters related to Yeywa, Khabaung and Kon-chaung Hydro Electric Power Projects.

Also present on the occassion were Deputy Minister U Myo Myint , directors-general and officials of departments under the Ministry of Electric Power No 1.

Vice-President Mr Xiao Ping and Vice Manager Senior Engineer Mr Zhang Fei and officials of CHMC were also present together with Mr Lu Wenjun.

Vietnamese Prime Minister sends felicitations to Prime Minister General Thein Sein

NAY PYI TAW, 11 Jan- The following is the message of felicitations sent by Mr Nguyen Tan Dung, Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, to General Thein Sein, Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar, on the occasion of the 60th Anniversary Independence Day of the Union of Myanmar.

On behalf of the Government and people of Vietnam , I have the honour to convey to Your Excellency and the Government and people of Myanmar the warmest congratulations on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Independence Day of the Union of Myanmar.

I am pleased to see the excellent development of the traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation between Vietnam and Myanmar in the past years, especially after my official visit to Myanmar in August 2007 and your official visit to Vietnam in November 2007. 45th Myanma Gems Emporium 2008 to be held in March

YANGON , 11 Jan - Plans are under way to hold the 45th Myanma Gems Emporium 2008 in March by Ministry of Mines and Central Committee for Organizing Myanma Gems Emporium. National gem entre-preneurs will get more export earnings at the emporium since local and foreign gem merchants will purchase gems under competitive bidding. Collaborative efforts between the central committee and respective departments at home and abroad and Myanmar Gem Entrepreneurs Association are making collaborative efforts to attract more local and foreign gem merchants to visit the emporium.

Those national gem entrepreneurswho wish to participate in the emporium may contact the central committee not later than 20 February.

USDA Joint Secretary-General attends opening of school building, meets USDA members

NAY PYI TAW, 11 Jan - Joint Secretary-General of the Union Solidarity and Development Association Minister for Electric Power No 1 Col Zaw Min attended the opening ceremony of the building at Basic Education Middle School (Branch) in Chaukpin Village of Kanma Township on 7 January.

Minister Col Zaw Min, Chairman of Thayet District Peace and Development Council U Khin Maung Win and Sayadaw Bhaddanta Rajinda, on behalf of wellwisher Sayadaw Bhaddanta Nayaka of Byama Neinmitayon Pariyatti Monastery, formally opened the school building.

Next, the minister delivered an address. On behalf of the Sayadaw, Member of the School Board of Trustees U Hsan Win reported on the purpose of donating the school building and handed over documents related to the new school building to Township Education Officer Daw Nyunt Nyunt Tin.

While in Kanma, the Joint Secretary-General of USDA inspected tasks of bio-gas fired power station being undertaken by USDA in Pazinneint Village . The power station is supplying power to 100 houses in the village.

At Kanma Township USDA Office, the Joint Secretary-General met executives, organizers, members and local people and urged them to participate in Community welfare tasks.

He also met with executives, organizers, members and townselders at Mindon Township USDA Office. In the evening, the Joint Secretary-General together with Chairman of Magway Division PDC Col Phone Maw Shwe met executives, organizers, members and townselders of Padan Township USDA at the Dhammayon of No 25 Saw Mill in Padan of Thayet District.

Electric Power No 2 Minister attends signing ceremony

NAY PYI TAW, 11 Jan - A ceremony to sign agreement between Myanma Electric Power Enterprise under the Ministry of Electric Power No 2 and Yunnan Machinery and Equipment Import and Export Co Ltd (YMEC) of the People's Republic of China on purchasing materials was held at the meeting hall of the ministry, here, yesterday.

Minister for Electric Power No 2 Maj-Gen Khin Maung Myint delivered an address and Vice-Chairman Mr Gao Chong Yun of YMEC spoke words of thanks.

Next, Managing Director of Myanma Electric Power Enterprise Dr San Oo and Mr Gao Chong Yun singed the documents and exchanged them. It was also attended by Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Minister for Electric Power No 1 Col Zaw Min, Attorney-General U Aye Maung, Deputy Minister for Industry -2 Lt-Col Khin Maung Kyaw, departmental heads and officials.

Basic Librarian Course No 3/2007 concludes

NAY PYI TAW, 11 Jan - The Basic Librarian Course No 3/2007 was concluded at the Ministry of Information, here, this morning.

Deputy Director-General U Ye Htut of Information and Public Relations Department attended the conclusion ceremony and delivered a speech. He presented prizes to the trainees who stood first, second and third in the course.

He also presented cash assistance to trainees through leader U Sai Aung Zaw Lin provided by Minister for Information Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan.

IPRD Director U Than Tun gave completion certificates to the trainees. A total of 54 trainees attended the 5-week course organized by IPRD under the Ministry of Information.

Talks on industrial development held

YANGON , 11 Jan - Hailing the 14th Annual General Meeting of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, talks on development of industries were held at UMFCCI office tower here today.

Deputy Minister for Health inspects hospitals in Mon State

NAY PYI TAW, 11 Jan - Secretary of National Health Committee Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, accompanied by departmental officials, on 8 January met doctors, nurses, health staff, members of township health committee, members of social organizations and townselders at the hall of Mottama Station Hospital of Paung Township and urged them to participate in realization of the Millennium Goals Project in cooperation with the people.

Afterwards, the deputy minister inspected patient wards, operation theatre, medical store and delivery room of the hospital. On 9 January, the deputy minister also visited Theinseik Station Hospital of Thaton District, Daukyat rural development station hospital of Bilin Township, Bilin People's Hospital, Kyaikto People's Hospital and Theinzayet Station Hospital of Kyaikto Township and he gave necessary instructions to health staff.

MMA conference on 15 Jan

YANGON, 11 Jan-The 54th conference of Myanmar Medical Association will commence at 8 am on 15 January at the hall of the Association on Theinbyu Road in Mingalar Taungnyunt Township here.

The invited persons, representatives to the conference and members of the association are to arrive by 7:30 am.

Book on hair style launched

YANGON, 11 Jan - A ceremony to launch the book entitled ?Hair Style DIY (Do it yourself) written by house surgeon Ni Ni Moe of Mandalay University of Medicine was held on the first floor of City Star Hotel on Maha Bandoola Street, here, this afternoon, attended by journalists and guests.

Actor Hsan Htut explained the book launching and purpose of publishing it.

Next, Ni Ni Moe together with models demonstrated various kinds of hair styles and spoke words of thanks.

It was the first ever book on hair style creations in the literary world of Myanmar .

Man wounded in mine explosion

NAY PYI TAW, 11 Jan-A man lost his right leg and left little finger and sustained injuries in his face in a mine explosion that occurred at 1 pm on 4 January.

Maung Ohn Tun, son of U Tun Kyi of Taungngu Tann Ward in Kyaukkyi Township was on his way to the woods to collect thatches when he stepped on the mine planted by the insurgents. The victim was rushed to Kyaukkyi Township People's Hospital. Officials concerned are now making investigation into the case.

Insurgents, with the intention of harming the stability of the State, peace and development of the region and killing and wounding the people, are committing destructive acts in various means.

Universities Hiking and Mountaineering team scale mountains in Chin State

YANGON, 11 Jan - A 40-strong all university winter mountaineering team led by executive members of Myanmar Hiking and Mountaineering Federation and Chairman of Universities Hiking and Mountaineering Association Associate Professor of Myanmar Department under the University of Yangon U Myo Thant started a mountaineering trip to Mindat District, Southern Chin State on 27 December 2007. During the trip, they were able to scale the highest peak of Khawnuthon also known as Mount Vitoria 10,500 feet above sea level on 1 January; the highest peak of Mount Lonetain in Matupi Township 8,224 feet above sea level on 4 January; the fifth highest peak of Bontala Waterfall in Chin State, flowing to Laymyo River also called Issanawadi River 4,200 feet above sea level on 7 January; and the second highest summit of Mount Mawti in Chin State 9,010 feet above sea level.

Health staff and Red Cross Society members provided medical care for the climbers while in the villages of Chin State . Moreover, the mountaineering team members also presented gifts to the local people and cash for rural development works.

Mixed cropping of bean and sunflower demonstrated

BOGALE, 5 Jan - Myanma Agriculture Service of Bogale Township organized a demonstration on cultivation of sunflower in bean plantation as mixed croping in Tonhle Village of Kyunnyo Village-tract and Shwebosu Village of Padamyagon Village-tract in Bogale Township on 21 December.

It was attended by Chairman of District Peace and Development Council U Myo Chit, Police Major San Thein and officials.

Dental equipment installed at Mindat District General Hospital

MINDAT, 2 Jan - Chairman of Mindat District Peace and Development Council U Than Myint and Chairman of Mindat Township PDC U Myint Thein inspected installation of dental equipment at Mindat District General Hospital on 27 December.

Officials reported on opening of the dental unit at the general hospital and installation of the dental equipment.

The government spent K 720,000 and the people K 720,000 on installation of the dental equipment. At present, the hospital is provding dental care service to the people.

Bomb blast kills woman in Nay Pyi Taw Pyinmana

NAY PYI TAW, 11 Jan - A bomb exploded in a public toilet in the compound of the staff quarters near Nay Pyi Taw Pyinmana Railway Station at 4:30 am today, leaving one dead.

Naw Gay Lar, 40, daughter of U Saw Shwe Lay, of Laythit Village , Htantapin Township , Bago Division, died on the way to the 100-bed hospital in Nay Pyi Taw Pyinmana as she was injured in her left and right ankles, stomach and hands in the blast.

Authorities inspected the place where the bomb blasted and fulfilled the requirements, and they are investigating the blast.

According to the tips-off, insurgents have sent terrorists and explosives to the country across the border to carry out sabotage. The authorities are in hot pursuit of terrorists.

The people are urged to inform the authorities concerned if they find any suspicious persons and to be on the alert for suspicious saboteurs and terrorists who are disguised to penetrate into the local communities.

Sarsodaw Day marked in Nay Pyi Taw Pyinmana

NAY PYI TAW PYINMANA, 25 Dec - Nay Pyi Taw Pyinmana Township Writers and Journalists Association observed the Sarsodaw Day at its office, here, on 10 December.

U Khin Maung Than (Khin Maung Than-Sethmu) delivered an address and Chairman of the Township WJA U Myint Lwin (San Kaung) explained the purpose of holding the ceremony.

U Tun Kyaw (Kogyi Kyaw) read the message sent by Chairman of MWJA U Hla Myaing (Ko Hsaung). U Thein Htaik Aung (Mam Thway Thit Min) gave talks on matters related to writer Sayagyi Thadoe Piya.

The Annual General Meeting of the township association followed.

Long-distance race held in Ottwin

OTTWIN, 6 Jan - As a gesture of hailing the 60th Anniversary Independence Day, the 15-mile long-distance race, sponsored by Kyei Ni Cheroot Family, was held in front of Phonedawtoe Phonedawpwint Pagoda on Yangon-Mandalay Highway in Ottwin on 1 January morning.

A total of 69 runners participated in the race. Officials presented prizes to the respective winners. Cash award K 80,000 was given to the first prize winner, K 60,000 to the second, K 40,000 to the third and K 10,000 each to consolation prize winners.
