Prime Minister congratulates Thai counterpart

Nay Pyi Taw, 31 Jan-General Thein Sein, Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of congratulations to His Excellency Mr Samak Sundaravej, who has been elected as Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand.

Plans set to systematically use hydropower from Kengtawng Hydropower Project Secretary-1 inspects hospitals, BEHSs, Kengtawng Hydropower Project in Monghsat, Kehsi Townships

Nay Pyi Taw, 31 Jan - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo, accompanied by SPDC member Lt-Gen Kyaw Win of the Ministry of Defence, Lt-Gen Myint Hlaing of the Ministry of Defence, Chairman of Shan State (East) PDC Commander of Triangle Region Command Maj-Gen Min Aung Hlaing, Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Minister for Electric Power No 1 Col Zaw Min, Minister for Electric Power No 2 Maj-Gen Khin Maung Myint, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Phone Swe and officials of the SPDC Office and departmental heads, left Kengtung at 11.15 am on 29 January and arrived at Monghsat at 1.45 pm.

At Monghsat Township Hospital , Chairman of the National Health Committee Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo and party heard reports on the history of the hospital and providing of health care services presented by officials.

The Secretary-1 inspected medical equipment at the operation theatre and systematic storage of medicines and left necessary instructions.

Chairman of the Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo and party visited the language lab of Monghsat Basic Education High School and gave instructions to the teachers.

On 30 January morning, they proceeded to the site of Kengtawng Hydropower Project being implemented by Hydropower Projects Implementation Department on Namtein Creek, 30 miles northeast of Mongnai of Langkho District. They were welcomed by Chairman of Shan State PDC Commander of Eastern Command Maj-Gen Thaung Aye and officials.

At the briefing hall, Minister Col Zaw Min reported that Kengtawng Hydropower Project is being implemented for generating more electricity and supplying more power to Shan State in accord with the guidance of the Head of State. The project will generate 54 megawatts or 472 million kwh yearly. Construction of the diversion dam-1, the diversion dam-2, the power intake building, the inlet channel, the channels, the water tanks and many other tasks of the project have been completed. In addition, the laying of pre-stressed pipelines is completed 65 per cent and the construction of the power station 80 per cent. The plan is under way to complete implementing of the whole project in mid-2008.

The minister continued to report that the Upper Kengtawng Hydropower Project is also being implemented with the aims of supplying hydropower to Loilem and Langkho districts and to support the surplus to the national grid. The project will produce 52.5 megawatts.

Minister Maj-Gen Khin Maung Myint also submitted the reports that the preparations are being made for supply of 54 megawatts of hydropower from Kengtawng Hydropower Plant to townships of Loilem and Langkho districts in Shan State (South) through Namsang Power Station and the electricity surplus to the remaining regions through Namsang-Pinpet-Kalaw 132 KV power line. Tasks are being carried out for installation of Kengtawng-Namsang, Namsang-Pinpet, Namsang-Loilem and Namsang-Mongnai power lines, construction of power stations in Namsang, Loilem and Mongnai, and installation of power lines such as Mongnai-Maukmai and Langkho-Mongpan and the power line from Kengtawng Hydropower Plant to Kangtawng. In addition, power stations are being built in Mongnai, Maukmai, Langkho, Mongpan and Kengtawng. Arrangements are being made to supply power to the townships through the national grid as one generator of Kengtawng Power Plant is in operation to generate power.

After hearing the reports, the Secretary-1 stressed the need to complete the Kengtawng Hydropower Project and the Upper Kengtawng Hydropower Project on schedule and set the plans to supply electricity to the regions and systematically use power in accord with the guidance of the Head of State.

The Secretary-1 presented a fruit basket to Project manager Mr Wu Jing De of the project. The Secretary-1 and party looked into Nantein creek (Kengtawng waterfall) and power station, and scale model of Kengtawng hydel power station project and gave necessary instructions. They inspected the progress of construction of the project.

Next, they paid homage to the Sayadaw of Tonhong Pariyatti monastery and donated provisions to the Sayadaw and members of the Sangha. At Kengtawng Township People's Hospital, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo conducted the Secretary-1 and party round the chosen site for the building of Sangha ward. They also inspected the operation theater and X-ray room and presented medical equipment and cash to the medical fund of the hospital.

Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo and party proceeded to Kengtawng Township BEHS and looked into the learning of students at the multimedia classroom and gave instructions on academic matters.

At Kehsi Township People's Hospital, the Secretary-1 and party inspected operation theater, medical store, patient wards, dental clinic and X-ray room and presented medical equipment and cash to the funds of the hospital.

Next, the Secretary-1 and party left Kehsi Township by helicopter for Nay Pyi Taw.

Joint Secretary-General of Union Solidarity and Development Association Minister Col Zaw Min, CEC members Minister Brig-Gen Ohn Myint and Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Phone Swe, who accompanied the Secretary-1, met with executives at the office of Shan State (East) USDA on 27 January and urged them to carry out the regional development tasks in cooperation with the people and gave instructions on successful realization of the future tasks of the association.

Joint Secretary-General of USDA Minister Col Zaw Min and CEC member Minister Maj-Gen Khin Maung Myint yesterday met with secretaries and executives in Keshi and Kengtaung Townships and gave necessary instructions.

Lt-Gen Myint Swe supervises development tasks of townships, villages in Yangon South District

Yangon , 31 Jan - Lt-Gen Myint Swe of the Ministry of Defence this morning went on an inspection tour of townships and villages in Yangon South District where five rural development tasks are being carried out.

Accompanied by Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Hla Htay Win, senior military officers and departmental officials, Lt-Gen Myint Swe paid homage to the Buddha image at Kyaikhmawwun Pagoda in Kyauktan Township .

At the cash donation for the all-round renovation of the pagoda, Lt-Gen Myint Swe accepted K 5.2 million donated by wellwishers through Chairman of Township PDC U Maung Maung Khin.

At Meepya Model Village , they paid homage to Shwebontha Pagoda. Next, they attended the ceremony to provide I2 eyedrops to hens at the village PDC office. At the No 9 New Life Production Camp of the Ministry of Home Affairs, they presented gifts to the staff.

The camp produces 517.128 tons of striped prawn, 96.588 tons of white prawn, 202.831 tons of various fish, 177.848 tons of ordinary crab and 84.125 tons of soft crab in 6,279.43 acres of land in Kyauktan Township and it earns foreign exchange. In addition to breeding prawn, No 9 New Life Production Camp extends agricultural and livestock breeding tasks.

At Tadar General Administration Department, Lt-Gen Myint Swe met departmental personnel, social organizations and local people and explained regional development tasks.

Kyauktan Township has so far grown 28,715 acres of beans and pulses and 2,960 acres of edible oil crops.

MHRC meets

Nay Pyi Taw, 31 Jan - The Myanmar Human Rights Committee held the meeting 1/2008 at the Ministry of Home Affairs, here, yesterday.

In his address, Chairman of the Committee Minister for Home Affairs Maj-Gen Maung Oo said that the MHRC is striving for people to enjoy full human rights.

Members of the committee and work committees participated in the discussions, and the meeting ended with the concluding remarks by the minister.

Kaba Aye Pagoda Buddha Pujaniya on 13-17 Feb

Yangon, 31 Jan-The 57th Buddha Pujaniya Festival of Siri Mingalar Kaba Aye Pagoda on Kaba Aye Hill in Mayangon Township will be held on a grand scale from 13 to 17 February.

During the period, Maha Patthana will be recited round the clock at the festival. Shwe Wah Win Anyeint (non-dramatic performance) of Yangon Command will be staged on 14 February night, Myanmar traditional cane ball skill-demonstration, on 15 and 16 February nights, and ceremony to offer alms to 108 invited monks and 31 nuns led by Members of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee and State Ovadacariya on 17 February morning.

Medical Conference of Defence Services to be launched

Yangon, 31 Jan - The 16th Medical Conference of Defence Services will be held at Defence Services Orthopedic (500-bed) Hospital in Mingaladon Township on 14, 15, 16 and 18 February.

The medical conference includes 46 research papers, 11 posters representing research works, 11 talks on subject-wise and four discussions with respect to medical changes and improvements and one talks on treatment and pathology.

Local and foreign researchers, researchers from the Ministry of Health, professors, medical officers and nurses of Military Medical Regiments and Units submitted the papers to the conference and read out them.

Book on library comes out

Yangon , 29 Jan - With the aim of ensuring perpetual existence of self-reliant libraries, of turning out librarians and of imparting knowledge on basic libraries to the people, books on basic library course have been in circulation.

The publications are available at the state, division, district and township Information and Public Relations Departments and Sarpay Beikman Bookshop at the rate of K 1000 per copy.

Horizon League Basketball Tournamemt for 2007-2008 Season goes on

Yangon, 31 Jan-Horizon League Basketball Tournamemt for 2007-2008, jonintly organized by the Myanmar Basketball Federation and Horizon Int'l Education Center, continued at Kyaikkasan Gymnasium on 27 January.

Cow Boy beat Gryuts 109-86, Kss beat CCY 81-59, Filipino beat Shadows 69-57, Furios beat WHO 73-43.

After the matches, Cow Boy and KKS secured three wins, Red star and Furious two wins, Shadow three wins and one loss. Gryuts and Filipino gained one win and two losses, GB and Last Vampire two losses and WHO and CCY three losses. Blue Boy has not played yet.

Twelve men's teams and four women's teams are contending for the trophies.

MOC Chairman's Cup National Hockey League Tournament 1-17 March

Yangon, 31 Jan- To be organized by the Myanmar Hockey Federation, the Myanmar Olympic Committee Chairman's Cup National Hockey League Tournament will be held at Theinbyu Artificial Turf Hockey Pitch on Theinbyu Street in Mingala Taungnyunt Township from 1 to 17 March.

Hockey teams of the Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air) and Myanmar Police Force, student teams and other clubs will compete in the tournament. MHF will award handsome prizes to winners.

Six NLD members quit in Mandalay, Ayadaw Township

Nay Pyi Taw, 31 Jan - Township women organizer in-charge (1) Daw Myaing (a) Daw Than Nyunt residing in Chanmyathazi Township and member U Hla Aung of Mandalay South-East Township National League for Democracy, Ayadaw Township NLD members U Htay Win and U Thein Tun of Taunghmwa village in Sagaing Division on 26 January and Mandalay South-East Township NLD members U Khin Maung Win and Daw Hla Kyi of Chanmyathzi Township on 27 January resigned form the NLD of their own volition.

In their letters sent to the NLD and local authorities, they said that they had no longer wish to remain as the members of the party.

Commander inspects Thebyu Dam and Madan Dam Project

Nay Pyi Taw, 31 Jan-Commander of Nay Pyi Taw Command Maj-Gen Wai Lwin inspected Thebyu Dam near Yay-pya-yo Village , Nay Pyi Taw Lewe Township yesterday morning.

Thebyu Dam is across the Thebyu Creek. It was built in 2003-2004 and the project was completed in 2004-2005. Now, it irrigates 1200 acres.

Upon arrival at the Madan Dam Project, the commander heard a report by Deputy Director U Han Than of the Irrigation Department gave an account of progress of the project.

Madan Dam is being built across the Madan Creek near Na Nwin Kyin Village, about 42 miles south-west of Nay Pyi Taw Lewe Township . On completion, it will benefit 8000 acres of arable lands and generate 25 kilowatts.

The commander inspected thriving groundnut plantations along the road in Chaunggwa, Ywathit and Padetha villages. He provided foodstuff and aids for the villagers, and donated K 200,000 and robes to the monasteries and pagodas, and gifts to the students of village self-reliant schools.

Victorious Taekwondo athletes honoured

Yangon, 31 Jan - The Myanmar Tae- kwondo Federation hosted a dinner in honour of the victorious Myanmar selected Taekwondo athletes who had secured one gold, one silver and four bronze medals in the XXIV SEA Games 2007, at Yuzana Hotel in Bahan Township on 28 January.

Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint delivered an address.

President of MTF U Htay Myint (Yuzana Co Ltd) and an official of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea gave speeches.

The President of MTF and wellwishers presented cash rewards to medalists.

General Secretary of MOC Director-General U Thaung Htaik of the Sports and Physical Education Department handed certificates to those who secured the international level belts.

Vice-President U Mya Han of MTF, General Secretary U Tin Win, officials, coaches and athletes recounted the experiences in the SEA Games.

Also present on the occasion were Chairperson of the Central Committee for Myanmar Women's Sports Federation Daw Aye Aye and officials.
