Lt-Gen Myint Swe inspects tax-free markets

YANGON, 14 Feb - Lt-Gen Myint Swe of the Ministry of Defence together with Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Hla Htay Win, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor Brig-Gen Aung Thein Lin, Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa and officials arrived at Shukhintha tax-free market in Thakayta Township and inspected sales of goods there this morning.

Upon arrival at tax-free markets in Dagon Myothit (South), Dagon Myothit (North), Shwepyitha and Hlinethaya Townships, Lt-Gen Myint Swe and party looked into sales of varieties of goods at the shops opened by Ministry of Industry-1, Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, YCDC and regiments and units of Yangon Command, Poultry Farm, Ngwepinle Breeding and Fisheries Company Ltd, District and Township PDCs and Myanmar Rice Dealers Association. In addition, they inspected sales of kitchen crops, meat and fish, vegetables, dairy products, groceries and personal goods.

During the inspections, Lt-Gen Myint Swe urged officials to supervise sales of goods in accord with the purposes of opening tax-free markets and left necessary instructions.

Eye surgical equipment donated to Nay Pyi Taw General Hospital (300-bed)

NAY PYI TAW, 14 Feb - The Vision Myanmar Project of AusAID of Australia donated eye surgical equipment to Nay Pyi Taw General Hospital (300-bed) of the Health Department under the Ministry of Health at the hall of the hospital this morning.

Dr James Muecke of AusAID explained the purpose of the donation and presented eye surgical equipment. Deputy Director-General Dr Win Myint of the Health Department accepted the donation and presented a certificate of honour to the wellwishers.

Minister for Health Dr Kyaw Myint and guests viewed the eye surgical equipment at the operation theatre of the hospital and comforted the patients.

The donations of the Vision Myanmar Project were: Topcon Operation Microscope, Silt Lump Bio Microscope, A-San & Keratometer and Microsurgical Instrument.

Today, eye specialist Dr San San Nwe and eye surgeon Dr Yi Yi Aung performed operations on 14 patients suffering from cataract.

The AusAID has also donated eye surgical equipment to PyinOoLwin, Lashio and Thingangyun General Hospitals .

NAY PYI TAW, 14 Feb - The State Peace and Development Council has confirmed the appointment of Dr Tin Nyunt as Director-General of the Traditional Medicine Department under the Ministry of Health on the expiry of the one-year probationary period.

The State Peace and Development Council has appointed Deputy Director-General U Wai Myint of the Civil Service Selection and Training Department under the Civil Service Selection and Training Board as Director-General of the same department on probation from the date he assumes charge of his duties.

Foreign Minister felicitates Serbian counterpart

NAY PYI TAW, 15 Feb- U Nyan Win, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Vuk Jeremic, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia, on the occasion of the National Day of the Republic of Serbia, which falls on 15 February, 2008.

Cash donated to build IIA building

YANGON , 14 Feb- Wellwishers made cash donations for building of International Institute of Abbhidhamma. At the donation ceremony held at the Thadu Kari Dhamayon on Bo Aung Kyaw Street recently, United Associate Co Ltd donated 70 KVA generator worth over K 10 million to President and Pro-rector of IIA Retired Ambassador U Mya Than who presented a certificate of honour to the donor.

Similarly, Daw Saw Hon and friends and family donated K 250,000 for IIA through the President who presented certificate of honour to the donors.

Expert gives talks on economic development

YANGON , 14 Feb - Information Tech-nology Enhancement Work Committee of the Union of Myanmar Chambers of Commerce and Industry conducted talks on economic development at the UMFCCI office here on 2 February.

President of UMFCCI U Win Myint delivered an address. U Hla Maung, a retired ambassador, gave talks on the Role of Public Limited Company and Capital Markets in the Process of Economic Development and replied to the queries raised by those present.

Next, President U Win Myint and U Sai Ba Nyan of Maw Ushyaung Co presented gift to the retired ambassador.

Man loses left foot in mine blast

NAY PYI TAW, 14 Feb - A man got injuries in a mine blast in Mone Township on 9 February.

The incident happened when Maung Aung Htoo, 25, son of U Aung San, dwelling in Kawpyin Village of Meetaingtaw Village-tract in Mone Township , went to the wood to collect In-gyin leaves.

The victim stepped on the insurgent-planted mine which blasted off his left foot with injuries on the left hand.

The injuried was rushed to Mone People's Hospital where necessary treatments and help were given to him.

The authorities are in hot pursuit of the perpetrators.

The insurgents, undermining stability of the State and peace, tranquillity and law and order, are committing destructive acts causing death and destruction to the innocent people.

Commander supervises regional development tasks in Htantabin Tsp

NAY PYI TAW, 13 Feb - Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Hla Htay Win and officials concerned went on an inspection tour of Yangon University (West) in Htantabin Township this afternoon.

During the inspection tour, the commander inspected progress in preparing earth work with the use of heavy machinery, fencing and efforts for enabling bamboo trees to be grown at the university. After giving necessary instructions to the officials concerned, he made arrangements to fulfil the requirements.

At Hteinhnitpin village, the commander viewed irrigation water supply to the 50-acre summer paddy field that belongs to peasant U Kyi with the use of power-tillers.At the office of Township PDC, the commander met with departmental officials, members of social organizations and looked into progress in building retaining wall to prevent the bank erosion in Htantabin Township .

Next, the commander oversaw fresh water prawn farm, progress in paving 12 feet wide and 1580 feet long Bayintnaung road, Kogyi sluice gate project, Kyunngu river water pumping project and the 10-acre paddy field.

Htantabin has already cultivated over 46000 acres of summer paddy, over 5000 acres of edible oil crops, over 9000 acres of pulses and beans and over 600 acres of corn.

Foreign Minister receives Bangladeshi delegation

NAY PYI TAW, 14 Feb - A Bangladeshi delegation led by Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of Bangladesh Mr Md Touhid Hossain, together with Bangladeshi Ambassador to Myanmar Mr Abu Roshde Rokonuddawla called on U Nyan Win, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Union of Myanmar at his office here on 12 February.

The delegation attended the 3rd Annual Foreign Office Consul-tations between Myanmar and Bangladesh Tuesday morning.

At the Annual Consultations, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Kyaw Thu and Foreign Secretary of Bangladesh Mr Touhid Hossain discussed the matters of mutual interests and ways to promote cooperation between the two countries.

In the evening, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Kyaw Thu hosted dinner in honour of the visiting Bangladeshi Foreign Secretary and party at Thingaha Hotel here.

The Bangladeshi delegation also called on Deputy Minister for Transport Col Nyan Tun Aung, Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe and Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Aung Tun at their respective offices here on 13 February and left Yangon by air this afternoon.

Education Minister inspects universities, colleges

YANGON, 14 Feb-Minister for Education Dr Chan Nyein inspected University of Foreign Languages , Institute of Education (Yangon), Yangon East University , National Management Education College and Yangon West University on 3 and 4 February.

The minister inspected research work such as solar power fruit drier, solar power stove, solar power water purifier jointly conducted by Renewable Energy Committee of Yangon Division and Physics Department of Yangon West University. Later, he proceeded to University for Distance Education and attended to the needs.

On 5 February, Minister Dr Chan Nyein went to Bago Degree College and Hlegu Education College .

He called for promotion of education standard and enjoyed English language proficiency debate contest there.

Next, he proceeded to Dagon University . And he inspected lecture hall of Physics Department and observed learning of the students.

Union Day delegate national race cultural troupes present performances

NAY PYI TAW, 14 Feb - National race cultural troupes who had attended the 61st Anniversary Union Day ceremony as delegates gave performances at the open air theater in the compound of Nay Pyi Taw City Hall yesterday evening.

Artistes of the Fine Arts Department, cultural troupes of Kachin, Kayah, Kayin, Chin, Mon, Rakhine and Shan States and Taninthayi Division presented performances to the audience.

The performance continued at the same venue up to 14 February.

Energy Minister receives Russian Ambassador, Nobel Oil Co Chairman

NAY PYI TAW, 14 Feb - Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi received Russian Ambassador Mr Mikhail M Mgeladze and Chairman of Nobel Oil Company Mr Grigory Gurevich at the ministry, here, on 11 February.

The meeting focused on the energy sector.

USDA CEC member presents cash and books to schools in Ngazun Township

NAY PYI TAW, 14 Feb - CEC member of the Union Solidarity and Development Asso-ciation Deputy Minister for Transport Col Nyan Tun Aung looked into condition of Ayeyawady River near Ngazun and donated K 50000 to the funds of Myatheindan Pagoda in Ngazun on 6 February.

At Kyauktalon village Basic Education High School (branch), the deputy minister and wife handed over 50 dozens of exercise books to the school and presented K 50,000 to ninth standard student Ma Khine Khine Htoo.

Next, the deputy minister met with health staff and members of social organizations at the Ngazun Township People's Hospital and presented K 100,000 each to medical fund and health staff and K 50,000 each to Women's Affairs Organization and Maternal and Child Welfare Association of the township. He also gave cash assistance to the patients.

The deputy minister and wife also presented 50 dozens of exercise books to Gyo village BEHS (branch) at the school.

They also attended the opening of the third Col Nyan Tun Aung Invitational Cup football tournament at the playground of the township and opening of bio-fuel used generator at Min village in Kyaungnankyay village-tract.

On 7 February, the CEC member and wife attended the ceremony to set out mountaineering and hiking journey of youth from five townships organized by Myingyan District USDA.

YUCS holds Sixth International Conference on Computer Application 2008

YANGON , 14 Feb -The opening ceremony of the Sixth International Conference on Computer Application 2008 conducted by Yangon University of Computer Studies was held at Sedona Hotel here this morning.

In the morning session, Professor Dr Yoshinori Sagisaka of Waseda University Global Information and Telecommunication Institute, Tokyo , Japan , presented paper on Communicative Prosody Processing For Synthesis and Recognition of Para-linguistic Information, and Professor Dr Jong Sou Park of Korea Aerospace University, Seoul , the Republic of Korea on Virtualization Technology and Security. In the afternoon, the paper-reading session continued.

The paper-reading session was held with a view to producing the international level computer professionals. Local and foreign resource persons are scheduled to read out 52 research papers. The session continues tomorrow.

Yangon University of Computer Studies has been holding the paper reading sessions since 2003 and today's session was the 6th of its kind.

Union Day delegates on study tour of Nay Pyi Taw

NAY PYI TAW, 14 Feb - The delegates to the 61st Anniversary Union Day, accompanied by officials concerned, visited offices of the ministries, here, this morning.

On arrival at Nay Pyi Taw National Herbal Plants Garden , Deputy Director-General of Traditional Medecine Department U Aung Myat Kyaw gave an account of the garden.

They also visited Nay Pyi Taw Myoma Market, Nay Pyi Taw Hotel Zone and Nay Pyi Taw Water Fountain Garden .
