Nay Pyi Taw, 4 March - Prime Minister General Thein Sein, accompanied by Lt-Gen Myint Hlaing and Maj-Gen Tha Aye of the Ministry of Defence, Chairman of Taninthayi Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Coastal Region Command Maj-Gen Khin Zaw Oo, ministers, deputy ministers and heads of departments, flew to Kawthoung via Dawei on 2 March.

At Myitzuthaka Hall, the Prime Minister and party met with departmental officials, members of social organizations, townselders and entrepreneurs. During the meeting, Chairman of Kawthoung District PDC U Min Aye Lwin reported to Prime Minister General Thein Sein on regional rice security, growing of pepper, oil palm and rubber, increased export of marine products and production of fish and prawn and requirements.

At the meeting, the Prime Minister said requirements regarding the reports are to be assessed and fulfilled. Kawthoung, an important region, is situated in the southernmost part of the country. He emphasized the importance of mutual benefits and friendship in the process of bilateral relations and trading as Kawthoung shares the border with the neighbouring country. Measures are to be taken for regional security, restoration of law and order, transportation improvement, nurturing of more educated persons, regional food sufficiency, cultivation of perennial crops such as palm oil and rubber to meet the target, meat and fish sector development and border trade, he added.

Next, the Prime Minister presented medical funds for District People's Hospital supplies and uniforms for basis education schools and social organizations through officials and cordially greeted those present.

After the meeting, the Prime Minister and party inspected greening tasks for Bayintnaung hill and posed for documentary photo in front of King Bayintnaung Statue. Next, they looked into greening tasks for Bayintnaung cape and its environs and developments of Kaw-thoung in a motorcade.

Upon arrival at Bokpyin, the Prime Minister and party inspected thriving private-owned palm oil plantations along Kawthoung-Bokpyin motor road. At the office of Bokpyin Township PDC, they met with departmental officials, members of social organizations and townelders and chairman U Maung Maung Zin briefed development tasks of the township and requirements.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister urged those present to make concerted efforts in carrying out development tasks based on the sound foundations of the State, restore law and order covering remote rural areas and repair and maintain motor roads in the township. In addition, he said development tasks are being carried out in other states and divisions like Taninthayi Division and therefore all states and division are now on development track.

Next, the Prime Minister and party presented cash assistance and gifts to officials concerned and Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Tin Naing Thein provided supplies of the ministry for the township.

Afterwards, they cordially greeted those present and inspected developments of Bokpyin in a motorcade.

The Prime Minister and party flew to Myeik and oversaw development works and progress in greening tasks along the strand road in a motorcade. Next, they paid homage to Maha Theidizaya Pagoda and made cash donations.

On 3 March, Prime Minister General Thein Sein visited Myeik 200-bed hospital and met with Deputy Head of Division Health Department Dr Daw Khin Wai Hlaing, the medical superintendent, specialists, doctors and nurses. During the meeting, the Prime Minister urged them to carry out health care services through goodwill, code of conduct education programs for the public, be aware of preventive measures for diseases, to provide effectively treatment and make field trip to the grassroots level.

After giving guidance, he presented cash donations to medical superintendent U Myint Thaung. Prime Minister and party went on an inspection tour of Myeik Technological University . At the briefing hall, they met with principals and faculty members of Myeik Technological University and University of Computer Studies and Managing Director U Ohn Myint briefed on progress in building Myeik Technological University .

Next, Deputy Minister for Science and Technology U Kyaw Soe and Commander Maj-Gen Khin Zaw Oo gave supplementary reports on academic matters and construction tasks.

Afterwards, the Prime Minister gave guidance on timely completion of the construction tasks, growing of shade trees and measures to be taken for the emergence of a pleasant and prestigious university. He said teachers themselves are constantly learning respective subjects and teach their students to be proficient in their subjects. In addition, the teachers are to nurture energetic students who are willing to study subjects and take innovative measures competitively. The students are important to become good and able citizens not only for the State but also for the region. The teachers are to guide the students to be the ones who adore good morals, disciplines, State and Union Spirit.

Upon arrival at Myeik Myothit, the Prime Minister and party inspected construction tasks. At the briefing hall, Chairman of Myeik Township PDC U Kaung Zan Oo briefed on construction tasks of Myeik Myothit and the commander gave a supplementary report.

Regarding the reports, the Prime Minister said Myeik Myothit will develop within a few years as there has been an improvement of economy and increase in population. Myeik Myothit is the best place for the extension of populous old Myeik. Concerted efforts are to be made for the emergence of Myothit.

The Prime Minister and party flew back to Nay Pyi Taw via Myeik in the afternoon.

Commission for Holding Referendum holds meeting No 1/2008

Nay Pyi Taw, 4 March - The Commission for Holding Referendum for the Approval of the Draft Constitution of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar held its meeting No 1/2008 at the office of the commission here at 9:30 am today.

Present at the meeting were Chairman of the commission Chief Justice U Aung Toe, the secretary, the joint secretary and members of the commission.

At the meeting, Chairman of the commission Chief Justice U Aung Toe presided over the meeting and U Win Ko acted as the MC.

Chairman of the commission Chief Justice U Aung Toe delivered an address and the commission members discussed their respective tasks for holding the referendum. Participants of the meeting organized state/division sub-commissions at the meeting.

The meeting ended with concluding remarks by Chief Justice U Aung Toe.

EP Minister inspects construction of sub-power stations in Meikhtila, Singaing

Nay Pyi Taw, 4 March - Minister for Electric Power No 2 Maj-Gen Khin Maung Myint inspected the construction project of the 230/33/11-KV Thapyaywa main sub-power station in Meikhtila on 29 February.

Next, the minister inspected connection of 230-KV cables between Meikhtila and Myingyan.

Afterwards, the minister went to the construction project of Belin main sub-power Station in Singaing, Mandalay Division, and inspected the earth works, construction of the power station and towers.

At the project, officials briefed the minister on construction tasks of the station and the minister gave instructions to them.

Stone plaque of Maha Tagundaing Pagodas unveiled

Nay Pyi Taw, 4 March -Secrctariat member of Union Solidarity and Development Association (Central) Minister for Industry 1 U Aung Thaung unveiled the stone plaque of Aungkyaung Waisi Maha Tagundaing Pagodas in Thukha Samphada Letha Monastery in Myothit town on 29 February.

At the ceremony, Minister U Aung Thaung and wife Daw Khin Khin Yi and wellwishers donated robes and provisions to the Sayadaw of the monastery and they shared merits gained.

The minister met with the departmental officials, members of USDA, social organization members and local people at the Dhammayon of the monastery where he called for them to participate in the development tasks of the town. In Natmauk township, the minister offered robes and provisions to Sayadaw Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotika Dhaja Bhaddanta Candavamsa of Dipinkaya Monastery and members of the Sangha.

People's Hall of the township, the minister held a meeting with departmental personnel, USDA members, social organization members and local people of the township.

F & R Minister meets officials of MFTB and MICB

Nay Pyi Taw, 4 March-A meeting between the Minister for Finance and Revenue and officers of Myanma Foreign Trade Bank and Myanmar Investment and Commercial Bank was held at the meeting hall of MFTB on 2 March morning.

It was attended by Minister for Finance and Revenue Maj-Gen Hla Tun, managing directors and directors-general of enterprises and departments under the ministry, and senior officers.

Officials of MFTB and MICB reported works carried out in the financial year and future tasks in the new financial year.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Maj-Gen Hla Tun stressed the need for officials to carry out the tasks in line with laws, rules and regulations.

After that, the minister looked into functions to be carried out in banks, international banking with the use of SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication and On-line Banking System.

Minister for Forestry inspects teak plantation in Nay Pyi Taw Pyinmana and Nay Pyi Taw Tatkon

Nay Pyi Taw, 4 March - Central Executive Committee of the Union Solidarity and Development Association Minister for Forestry Brig-Gen Thein Aung and officials inspected teak plantation in blocks No 18 and 9-25 in Ngalite forest reserve in Nay Pyi Taw Pyinmana and Nay Pyi Taw Tatkon Townships on 29 February.

The minister also inspected the new school building of Basic Education Middle School (Branch) in Phayangokto Village in Ingapu Township and new building for Basic Education Primary School of Taungbawgon Village under construction. He presented cash assistance to the officials.

The minister gave a speech at the opening ceremony of building of new Basic Education Middle School in Nyaungbingyikwin, Ingapu Township and presented cash assistance for educational fund.

The minister and party inspected the construction of new buildings for schools in Kyatgaung, Hlaygyiei and Pyogon villages in the township.

CEC member Brig-Gen Thein Aung paid respects to Sayadaw Maha Saddhammajotikadhaja Bhaddanta Jevata Dhamma of Zeya Thukha Monastery.

He also met officials of the Township USDA and other officials.

Armed Forces Day commemorative tennis events to be held

Yangon , 4 March-The Myanmar Tennis Federation, as a gesture of honouring the 63rd Anniversary Army Forced Day, will organize tennis team events and age-wise events?U-12, U-14 and U-16 at Theinbyu Tennis Court from 22 to 27 March.

In (A) Division, a team may be formed with four to five playres and take part in a team event, two singles events, and a doubles event. In (B) Division, a team may be formed with six to seven playres and take part in U-12, U-14 and U-16 events.

Those wishing to participate in the tournament may register at MTF, Tel 372360 not later than 20 March. A representative from each team has to attend the meeting for drawing of fixtures MTF at 1 pm on 21 March. The tournament is sponsored by Myanmar C. P Co Ltd.

Annual meeting of Myanmar Women's Affairs Federation held

Nay Pyi Taw, 4 March - The annual meeting of Myanmar Women's Affairs Federation was held at the city hall, here, this morning with an address by President of Myanmar Women's Affairs Federation Daw Khin Khin Win.

Also present on the occasion were Patrons of MWAF, Vice-President, CEC members, President of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association, CEC members, Patrons and Chairpersons of State and Division Women's Affairs Organizations, intellectuals and intelligentsia, officials of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, delegates and guests.

In her address, President of MWAF Daw Khin Khin Win said the annual meeting was held with the following objectives. They are? accepting Our Three Main National Causes as the national duty, cooperating for successful realization of political, economic and social objectives, participation in the respective sector for realization of seven-step Road Map, prevention against danger of external and internal destructive elements with the strength of women, keeping patriotism alive and dynamic and preserving traditional culture, realizing the objectives of MWAF, active participation in education and health care services for success of rural development tasks, providing assistance for development of women's life and participation in the tasks for prevention of violence against women and for fightinng against human trafficking.

She said works for 2007 were reviewed at the annual meeting and all the delegates are to discuss the future tasks for develop-ment of women's life, life security, and raising socio-economic life and organizational matters in accord with the above-mentioned objectives.

She urged the members of women's affairs organization to work hard in the interest of the entire women with unity.

After the ceremony, those present at the meeting observed documentary photos of activities of MWAF and state/division WAOs.

Next, the first day session of annual meeting was held. The meeting was presided over by President of MWAF Daw Khin Khin Win. Member of information department of MWAF Daw Laing Maung Pang acted as master of ceremonies.

General Secretary of MWAF Dr Daw Myint Kyi submitted the report of the federation.

Next, chairperson of state and division women's organizations reported on work done.

President of MWAF Daw Khin Khin Win took part in the discussions.

At the afternoon session, Vice-President of MWAF Daw Khin Lay Myint presided over the meeting. Member of information department of MWAF Daw Khin Moe U acted as master of ceremonies.

The delegates of state and division women's organizations submitted the reports on work done. Vice-President of MWAF Daw Khin Lay Myint took part in the discussions. The annual meeting continues on 5 March.

Horizon League Basketball tournament continues

Yangon , 4 March - The Horizon League Basketball tournament jointly organized by Myanmar Basketball Federation and Horizon International Education Centre continued at Kyaikkasan Gymnasium on 2 March.

In the men's events, KKS won over Last Vampire with 95-29 points, Cow Boy passed through Fillipino with 87-32, Blue Boy beat WHO 101-35, CCY edged out GB with 87-82. After the events, KKS was in the lead with six wins in sixth matches, Cow Boy stood second and Red Star third.

The matches will continue at 12 am on 9 March.

Minister visits Myaungmya Industrial Zone

Nay Pyi Taw, 4 March-Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Htay Oo held a meeting with industrialists in Myaungmya Industrial Zone in Myaungmya, Ayeyawady Division, on 24 February.

He inspected the machines produced in the zone.

In response to the reports by officials concerned, the minister clarified the State's assistance to the industrialists.

Next, the minister viewed the products of the industries, and attended to the needs for industrial development.

CPT Minister inspects communication services in Kachin State

Nay Pyi Taw, 4 March - Minister for Com-munications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Thein Zaw inspected installation of equipment at telecommunication station, services of Auto Exchange Office and cell phone system in Moegaung on 1 March.

The minister later inspected Micro Wave Communication Office in Samhaw town.

In the evening, the minister inspected Hopin micro wave and auto exchange offices in Sahmaw and Hopin and Nanmon in Indawgyi.

On 29 February, the minister visited Micro Wave Station in Nammati Township in Kachin State and inspected communication services. He also fulfilled the requirements of the tasks.

Sarpay Beikman Society publishes book

Yangon , 4 March-Sarpay Beikman Society today published the Sarpay Beikman manuscript first prize-winning work for 2004 ?Alin-dagar-phwint-ywe-kyo-myi and other short stories? by Nandar Khin (Thakkala Mye) as its 35th work.

Talks on forest conservation experiences

Myanmar Furniture Fair-2008 attracts visitors

Yangon , 4 March - Myanmar Furniture Fair-2008 organized by Myanmar Forest Products and Timber Merchants Association at Convention Hall here attracted visitors today.

The fair kicked off yesterday and thirty eight entrepreneurs staged 154 booths indoors and 13 booths outdoors at the fair.

Furniture and machinery for producing wood-based products are displayed at the booths. One booth is set up to disseminate knowledge on forest conservation.

Myanmar Furniture Fair-2008 continues on 7 March.

The fair is staged with the aims of penetrating foreign markets and increasing the country's income to build the new nation, gaining achievement in forest and wood-based product market sectors, creating more job opportunities in the country and overcoming the challenges of the economic sanctions imposed by western countries.

Orbis gives free treatments to patients

Nay Pyi Taw, 4 Mar-Under the arrangements of the Ministry of Health and Orbis International, eye specialists from Orbis gave free treatments to those with eye complaints at Mandalay Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist Hospital and on Orbis flying hospital at Mandalay Airport beginning from 26 February.

National eye Specialists and post graduate students studied the programmes conducted on the aircraft by the team.

Myanmar Open Golf Championship 2008 commences

Yangon, 4 March - Myanmar Amateur Open Golf Championship 2008 sponsored by Myanmar Golf Federation was held at the Yangon Golf Club in Danyingon Township here this morning.

After the first round, day, Nay Bala Win Myint led the event with 70 strokes, Aung Win stood second with 72, Soe Moe Win third with 73, Derek Htet Doe fourth with 74 and Yan Naing Pyo, Maung Maung Oo, Kyaw Soe Win, Yan Myo Aye and Min Thura Aung fifth.

The co-sponsors of the open golf championship are Dagon Brewery Ltd, Han Golf Masters Pte Ltd and Srixon and Han Event Management.
