(1) Kisapanadi Bridge on Yangon-Sittway Highway will become vital link with towns of Rakhine State

YANGON, 18 Jan - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye and Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, accompanied by senior military officers and ministers, helicoptered to Maungtaw on 16 January.

They were welcomed there by Deputy Minister for Commerce Commodore Myo Tint, Tactical Operations Commander Col Aung Myint, Chairman of Maungtaw District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Thein Dan and officials.

The General and party inspected the checkpoint and office of the Border Area Immigration Inspection, Supervision Department and warehouses.

Later, the General met chairmen and members of Maungtaw District and Township Peace and Development Councils, departmental officials and personnel, members of various organizations and towns-elders at Thiri Mingala Hall.

Speaking on the occasion, General Maung Aye said the Tatmadaw assumed duties of State owing to deteriorating situation in 1988 and discharged national duties forming the State Law and Order Restoration Council.

He noted that as a result of cooperation and expeditious endeavours of the government, the people and the Tatmadaw, the nation became stable in a short time and economic and social improvements have been achieved.

To be able to build a peaceful, modern and developed nation compatible with the political, economic and social accomplishments with new conviction, the State Peace and Development Council was constituted and tasks are being implemented with added momentum, he said.

He spoke of the need for departmental officials and personnel to harmoniously and zealously cooperate with the government in the endeavours for national development.

He said it is essential to boost multi-sectoral production, especially in the agriculture sector, and urged all to observe the Senior General's instructions on do's and don'ts in discharging duties.

Chairman of Maungtaw District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Thein Dan presented a report on the requirements of the district.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and ministers looked into the district's requirements.

Afterwards, General Maung Aye, Lt-Gen Tin Oo and party greeted departmental officials and personnel and local people.

The General and party proceeded to Buthidaung where they were welcomed by Chairman of Buthidaung District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Hla Maung and officials.

Lt-Gen Tin Oo and ministers met departmental officials and personnel and local people at U Ottama Hall in Buthidaung and coordinated departmental tasks and looked into the requirements of Buthidaung District and Township and Rathedaung Township.

Yesterday morning, General Maung Aye, Lt-Gen Tin Oo and party flew from Buthidaung to Kisapanadi Bridge Project being undertaken by Public Works in Kyauktaw Township.

They were welcomed there by Col Myo Win and officials, local nationals and pupils.

At the project office, Senior Engineer U Ong Sapa of Special Project Construction Group 4 and Chief Engineer (Roads Bridges) U Thant Zin of Public Works briefed them on progress of work in the project.

Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun and Chairman of Rakhine State Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Aung Htwe-presented supplementary reports.

After giving suggestions on the project, General Maung Aye inspected the scale-model of the bridge and Yangon-Sittway Road map.

He also left instructions on building of Yangon-Sittway Highway and Kyauktaw-Buthidaung Road, and completion of the roads as scheduled.

The General and party later inspected construction of Kisapanadi Bridge with the use of machinery.

Kisapanadi Bridge lying on Yangon-Sittway Road is strategic transport link with Sittway, Ponnagyun, Kyauktaw and MraukU.

The super structure of the bridge is being built with steel frames and reinforced concrete beams on the prestressed concrete piers. The main structure of the bridge which will allow use by 60-ton vehicles will be 400 metres long.

After inspecting Kisapanadi Bridge Project, General Maung Aye visited the regional battalion and met Tatmadawmen and families of Kyauktaw Station.

Later, General Maung Aye, Lt-Gen Tin Oo and party visited Kyauktaw Maha Muni Pagoda.

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees and officials briefed them on all-round renovation of the pagoda upon which General Maung Aye gave suggestions on preservation of ancient artistic works.

(2) Primary schools in Tamway, South Okkalapa get buildings renovated, funds added

YANGON, 18 Jan - Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected Basic Education Primary Schools to be renovated in Tamway Township and those already renovated in South Okkalapa Township this morning.

The Secretary-1, accompanied by officials of the office of the State Peace and Development Council, on arrival at No 26 BEPS in Myittanyunt Ward, was welcomed by Commander of No 4 Military Region Col Myo Myint, departmental heads, members of District, Township and Ward Peace and Development Councils, officials of Basic Education Department, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Township Education Officer, Headmistress Daw Myint Kyi, teachers and pupils.

The Secretary-1 then inspected the school.

He went to No 9 primary school in Mahlwagon Htaykywe Ward and No 34 primary school in Tamwaygyi Ward and inspected them.

Headmistresses Daw Myint Kyi, Daw Htar Yi and Daw Khin Thein Thein of No 26, 9 and 34 BEPS reported on number of pupils and teachers, academic matters and welfare.

The Secretary-1 fulfill the requirements.

The schools will be built by Zaykabar Construction.

The Secretary-1 and party proceeded to No 12 BEPS in Ward 10 in South Okkalapa Township where they were welcomed by USDA members, Headmistress Daw Khin Thein and teachers.

The Secretary-1 gave instructions.

Chairman of Asia Express (Ygn) Co Ltd U Maung Maung presented K 100,000 for the school fund and K 34,000 for teachers' uniforms to the Headmistress.

The Secretary-1 inspected the school renovated by Asia Express (Ygn) Co Ltd at a cost of over K 7.6 million.

The Secretary-1 went to renovated No 11 BEPS in Ward 10. Chairman U Maung Maung presented K 100,000 for the school fund and K 36,000 for teachers' uniforms to Headmaster U Tin Win.

The school was renovated by Asia Express (Ygn) Co Ltd at a cost of over K 6.8 million.

The Secretary-1 inspected renovated No 1 BEPS in Ward 4 in the township.

Managing Director U Myat Min of Myanma Ahla Construction Co presented K 100,000 for the school fund and K 50,000 for teachers' uniforms to Headmistress Daw Khin Win. The two-storey school with eight rooms was renovated by MAC at a cost of K 9.4 million.

In meeting with school heads, the Secretary-1 spoke of the need to teach pupils to be outstanding, clever and learned and to produce intellectuals and intelligentsia.

He urged the teachers to train their pupils to be imbued with the Union spirit and patriotism.

Renovated primary schools have emerged due to goodwill and generosity of well-wisher construction entrepreneurs under the arrangement of the government.

The construction entrepreneurs also established school trust fund, made arrangements for welfare of teachers and presented stationery for the pupils.

Parents, teachers and locals are pleased to see pupils learning peacefully at schools getting added facilities.

(3) National Health Committee Chairman hosts dinner in honour of Myanmar doctors

YANGON, 18 Jan - Chairman of the National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt hosted dinner in honour of Myanmar doctors from USA and Britain who attended the 44th Myanmar Medical Conference, at Mya Yeik Nyo Royal Hotel today.

Present were Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw, Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, heads of department of the Ministry of Health and guests.

Fine Arts Department of Ministry of Culture entertained the guests with variety dances at the dinner.

(4) Minister attends Naga Traditional Culture and New Year Festival

YANGON, 18 Jan - Naga Traditional Culture and New Year Festival was observed at the Naga traditional cultural grounds in Zibyugon Ward, Khamti, Sagaing Division, on 15 January with an address by Minister for Culture U Win Sein.

Present also were Deputy Minister for Science and Technology Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko, Tactical Operations Commander of North-West Command Col Kyaw Myint and station officers, Chairman of Khamti District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Htin Aung Kyaw and members, Secretary of Township Peace and Development Council U Min Naung and members, Chairman of Naga Traditional Cultural Central Committee U Htin Kov and members, executives and members of Sagaing Division and Khamti District Union Solidarity and Development Associations, Naga traditional cultural troupes and Naga youth dance troupes, local nationals and guests.

(5) Over 13,000 from 15 Natmauk village-tracts file USDA membership applications

YANGON, 18 Jan - Member of the Central Executive Committee of the Union Solidarity and Development Association U Aung Thaung attended USDA membership application-submitting ceremony in Natmauk Township, Magway Division, yesterday.

He also met district, township and ward USDA executives and organizers and coordinated regional development tasks.

He arrived at Pin Myohaung in Natmauk Township yesterday morning.

He paid respects and offered alms to member of Magway Township Sangha Nayaka Committee Pin Myoma Sayadaw U Bakula and members of the Sangha.

At the ceremony to submit USDA membership applications at Gwaycho Village-tract of Pin Myohaung, U Aung Thaung accepted altogether 13,294 applications of 15 village-tracts.

He later spoke about the State Peace and Development Council's nation-building tasks, national development being achieved, situation in some foreign countries and the government's efforts for promotion of national prestige.

Local people presented reports on requirements for regional development.

U Aung Thaung coordinated tasks for expansion and establishment of schools, health care and power supply.

He later visited Natmauk Basic Education High School and inspected a new building under construction and presented K 100,000 for the school.

He also met Natmauk USDA executives and members and presented K 100,000 for the association.

Meeting district and township USDA executives and ward organizers in Magway, he discussed plans for the future.

He then inspected construction of district and township USDA offices.

(6) Minister for Energy inspects Thanlyin Oil Refinery

YANGON, 18 Jan - Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, accompanied by Managing Director of Myanma Petrochemical Enterprise Col Kyaw Shein, arrived at Thanlyin Oil Refinery this afternoon.

They were welcomed there by officials of MPE.

Manager U Soe Maung briefed the minister on the production of the refinery.

The minister spoke of the need to run the refinery to fulfil the fuel needs security, and fire prevention. He called on employees to discharge their duties honestly.

The minister proceeded to Wharf No 4 of the refinery and inspected unloading of 6,500 tons of diesel from mv Hua Yun No 4.

(7) Minister attends ground-breaking ceremony of Okkan Sugar Mill

YANGON, 17 Jan - Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, together with department heads, attended a ground-breaking ceremony of new Okkan Sugar Mill in Tabuhla Village, Okkan, Taikkyi Township, yesterday.

The congregation received the Five Precepts from Kyundawgon Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sumana.

Members of the Sangha recited parittas.

The minister and party presented offertories to the members of the Sangha.

Merits gained were shared.

Later, Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Managing Director of Myanma General Maintenance Works U San Kyi, Managing Director of Myanma Sugarcane Enterprise U Myo Myint and Vice-President of CAMC Corporation Mr Jiang Zhao Rone drove stakes in at the site.

Afterwards, the minister met sugarcane growers.

Then, the minister inspected summer paddy fields, availability of water and distribution of irrigated water near Kyaiksakaing Village, Uto Village-tract, Taikkyi Township.

He gave instructions on timely cultivation of summer paddy at the place where water is available from Tabuhla Reservoir.

After that, the minister went to Kanthaya Vegetable Farm of Myanma Agricultural Service in Taikkyi Township.

He inspected the farm, and gave instructions.
