Statement by HE U Wunna Maung Lwin before adoption of draft resolution(A/HRC/7/L.36) at the 7th Session of the Human Rights Council28-3-2008

Mr. President,

Thank you for giving me the floor.

The draft resolution completely disregards the actual significant political progress in Myanmar by attempting to essentially politicize the internal affairs under the pretext of human rights obligation.

The draft is lopsided and highly intrusive. Besides, it fails to reflect the positive aspects of political development in Myanmar . The resolution amounts to dictate the Government of Myanmar in matters which fall within the domestic jurisdiction of Myanmar.

Myanmar has become  one of a few countries that have been put under pressure by influential and powerful countries  which have their own political agenda and use the human rights issues as a tool to interfere in the internal affairs of  the country. We strongly believe that this politicized approach would  set the dangerous precedent for all developing countries like Myanmar.

In addition, the draft is neither balanced nor constructive . Therefore, We can not accept this politicized approach. For these reasons  we totally and categorically reject the contents of the draft and dissociate ourselves from the resolution on the situation of human rights in Myanmar.

Finally,  I wish to express our deep appreciations to our friends who have steadfastly taken balanced and principled positions to support us and who have encouraged our firm commitment to a democratic society.

I thank you Mr. President.
