Senior General Than Shwe visits ancient pagodas in Bagan-NyaungU

YANGON, 20 Dec — Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe, accom-panied by member of the State Peace and Development Council General Thura Shwe Mann and other members and officials, visited ancient pagodas in Bag-an Nyaung U yesterday morning.

First, the Senior General and party visited Shwezigon Pagoda at 10.30 am and paid homage to the Kakkusan Buddha Image. Next they offered ‘soon’, fruits, flowers and lights to the pagoda. Senior General Than Shwe made cash donations to the funds of the pagoda through members of the pagoda board of trustees and paid obeisance to the pagoda.

Afterwards, Senior General Than Shwe and party went to Ananda Pagoda where they paid homage to the Buddha images and viewed ancient art and handicrafts. The Senior General next made cash donations to the funds of the pagoda and signed the visitors’ book.

Senior General Than Shwe also visited Lawkananda Swedawshin Pagoda and paid homage to the Jana Mudra Buddha Image, made cash donations to the funds the pagoda and signed the visitors’ book.

Senior General Than Shwe inspects Myakan Lake Greening project in NyaungU

YANGON, 20 Dec — Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe inspected the Myakan Lake Greening project in NyaungU Township yesterday.

Accompanied by Member of the State Peace and Development Council General Thura Shwe Mann, Members of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Ye Myint, Lt-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo and Lt-Gen Tin Aye, Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Vice-Admiral Soe Thein, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Myat Hein, Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Khin Zaw, Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander of North-West Command Maj-Gen Tha Aye, the ministers, senior military officers and officials, the Senior General heard a report on the project located near Nyaungto village west of Tuyin hill about seven miles south of NyaungU presented by Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Htay Oo. The minister also explained that according to the historical records, the lake was built by King Kyansittha during the Bagan era. The ministry after repairing the lake commissioned it on 30 August 1996. Due to silting, high evaporation rate, and less rainfall, the volume of water flowing into the lake, located in the dry region, is decreasing.

The minister also said, in accord with the guidance of the Senior General, the Irrigation Department of the ministry launched the project previous month.

Minister for Forestry Brig-Gen Thein Aung said that the Tuyin hill range, the watershed area of the lake, includes Swedaw, Thetsoe, Thagya, Paikhlan and Kangyigon hills. The area of the watershed is 2,760 acres. Various kinds of natural species grow in the area. A total of 1,300 acres of trees have been planted in the area. Moreover, the Dry Zone Greening Department has planted over 390,000 saplings of various species in the watershed area, and the Forest Department 120,000 saplings. The FD in cooperation with international organizations has cultivated over 988,000 saplings on 4,200 acres of land in the area. Deputy Minister for A&I U Ohn Myint also reported to the Senior General on the irrigation project.

In his guidance, the Senior General pointed out the need to find means to store water in the lake, reduce silting in the lake, regenerate forest in the area.

Minister Maj-Gen Htay Oo and an official explained the producing of bio-diesel from jatropha curcas with the help of sample plants and records. The Senior General observed a test driving of a power-tiller with the bio-diesel. He then inspected the bio-diesel-run power-tillers at work, and the greening project. He also gave guidance to officials.

Senior General Than Shwe inspects progress of Paunglaung Multi-purpose Dam Project,   Upper Paunglaung and Nancho Hydel Power Projects in Pyinmana

YANGON, 21 Dec — Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe inspected Paung-laung Multi-purpose Dam Project in Pyin-mana Township today.

Accompanied by Member of the State Peace and Development Council General Thura Shwe Mann, Members of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Ye Myint, Lt-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo and Lt-Gen Tin Aye, Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Vice-

Admiral Soe Thein, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Myat Hein, Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern Command Maj-Gen Ko Ko, the ministers, senior military officers, and officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, the Senior General arrived at Paunglaung Multi-purpose Dam by helicopter at 9.15 am today.

The Senior General and party were welcomed by Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Htay Oo, Deputy Minister for Electric Power U Myo Myint and officials.

At the briefing hall, Minister Maj-Gen Htay Oo reported on facts about the dam project, construction of the main embankment and spillway, progress in building the diversion dam near the dam and benefited acres.

Minister Maj-Gen Htay Oo continued to brief the Senior General and party on implementation of Chaungmange Dam Project in Lewe Township and progress of tasks.

Deputy Minister for Electric Power U Myo Myint also reported to the Senior General on facts about the Paunglaung Hydel Power Project, and the underground power station equipped with four 70-megawatt turbines.

He submitted reports on the main facts related to construction of Upper Paunglaung Hydel Power Project on Paunglaung River, 26 miles east of Pyinmana, generating of electricity at Upper Paunglaung Hydel Power Project to be installed with two 70-megawatt turbines, supply of water to Paunglaung Dam, installation of power lines, progress of the project tasks, and matters concerning Nancho Hydel power project that can produce 48 megawatts.

In response, Senior General Than Shwe gave guidance on extended cultivation of paddy in the region with the use of irrigation facilities, and efforts to be made for completion of the Upper Paunglaung and Nancho Hydel Power Projects as soon as possible.

Senior General Than Shwe and party inspected the water storage and the spillway from the main dam. Next, the Senior General and party looked into the underground power station.

Paunglaung Multi-purpose Dam Project was implemented on Paunglaung River near Kyitaung-Khawma Village , 10 miles east of Pyinmana.

The tasks of the project were undertaken by Construction-5 of the Irrigation Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation and the Hydroelectric Power Department of the Ministry of Electric Power sector-wise.

As a result of constructing the dam on Paunglaung River , Paunglaung Multi-purpose Dam Project could be implemented for installation of the four 70-megawatt turbines at the underground power station to generate 280 megawatts, the protection of Paunglaung river flooding to some extent and the supply of irrigation water to 35,000 acres of land. Paunglaung Multi-purpose Dam Project was inaugurated on 25 March 2005.

Paunglaung Hydel Power Station is the most modern and greatest among the ones built by the Government. Upper Paunglaung Hydel Power Project is also being implemented, and relating to it, arrangements are being made to build Nancho Hydel Power Project.

Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing attend graduation dinner of 8th intake of DSTA

YANGON, 24 Dec —Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing attended the dinner to mark the 8th intake graduation of Defence Services Technological Academy held at the DSTA in PyinOoLwin at 6 pm on 23 December.

Strive to do research for production of reliable and potent traditional medicines Senior General Than Shwe visits Medical Research Department ( Upper Myanmar ) in PyinOoLwin

YANGON, 24 Dec—Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe inspected the herbal plant farm of the Department of Medical Research (Upper Myanmar) under the Ministry of Health, and the pharmaceutical factory (PyinOoLwin) of the Myanma Pharmaceutical Industries under the Ministry of Industry-1 in PyinOoLwin on 22 December morning.

Together with Member of SPDC General Thura Shwe Mann and party, and officials, the Senior General arrived at the Department of Medical Research at 10.30 am. They were welcomed there by Minister for Health Dr Kyaw Myint and officials.

The minister gave an account of progress in implementing the guidance given on 23 December 2004 by the Senior General during his inspection tour of the Department of Medical Research.

Director-General of the department Dr Thein Tun reported on the sending of experts and staff abroad for further studies, the holding of seminars and workshops on traditional medicines, research work, and the growing of herbal plants.

In response, the Senior General gave guidance, saying that there was a single department of medical research, and now there has been a department of medical research each in Lower Myanmar, Central Myanmar, and Upper Myanmar .

The departments are to make efforts to do research for production of reliable and potent traditional medicines. In the process, the department concerned is to carry out research with respective own styles for achieving success.

He stressed the importance of categorizing research work — major research, normal research, and special research — to manufacture Myanma traditional medicines in accord with the standards set to cure such major diseases as cancer, HIV/AIDS, and cardiac disease apart from the six common major diseases in Myanmar — dysentery, diarrhoea, hypertension, diabetes, malaria and tuberculosis.

He said in keeping records of a variety of herbal plants it is required to do research region-wise, based on salient points of which kind of herbal plant has strengths in curing what sorts of diseases.

Next, the Senior General observed the herbal plantations. He also inspected the stockpiling of herbal plants that can cure the six common major diseases.

The minister and officials conducted the Senior General round the herbal plantations that can cure renal disease, uterine disease, oral disease, neurosis disease, osteitis disease and many other diseases. The Senior General gave guidance, assessing the reports.

It is learnt that the Department of Medical Research (Upper Myanmar) was established under the guidance of the Head of State to do research on a wider scale on the diseases and health problems that are common in Upper Myanmar with the aim of providing equal health equal care for the people in Lower Myanmar and those in Upper Myanmar . So far, the department has stockpiled 412 kinds of herbal plants.

The Senior General proceeded to the pharmaceutical factory (PyinOoLwin), where Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung and officials welcomed him.

The minister and officials conducted the Senior General round the factory. The minister reported on progress of installation of modern machines in the factory (PyinOoLwin) for the first stage, production of pills and tablets, arrangements being made in accord with the guidance for production of quality products and distribution of them at reasonable prices, and preparations for production of injections, fluids, lotions, and powder in the second stage.

The Senior General gave guidance on maintaining the quality of the products, seeking better ways to distribute the products to the people directly, and speedy production and distribution of the sorts of medicines handed over by the departments of medical research after achieving success in doing research.

The minister also reported on the new models of sewing machines innovated from the old ones of the Sewing Machine (Kyaukse).

Next, the Senior General inspected the buildings under construction in the compound of the factory.

The pharmaceutical factory (PyinOoLwin) was on test run in March 2005 and it is now producing pills and tablets. And it will manufacture injections, fluids, lotions and powders around December 2006 in the second stage.

Senior General Than Shwe inspects progress of Ayeyawady Bridge (Yadanabon) Construction Project

YANGON, 25 Dec — Accompanied by Member of the State Peace and Development Council General Thura Shwe Mann, Members of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Ye Myint, Lt-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo and Lt-Gen Tin Aye, Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Vice-Admiral Soe Thein, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Myat Hein, Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Khin Zaw, the ministers, senior military officers, and officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe left PyinOoLwin for Mandalay by car yesterday morning, and inspected progress of Myitnge-Htonbo-PyinOoLwin dual shortcut road.

The Senior General also oversaw the circular road of Taungthaman Lake by car.

On arrival at the project office of construction of Ayeyawady Bridge (Yadanabon) on Mandalay bank, the Senior General and party were welcomed by Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander of North-West Command Maj-Gen Tha Aye, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Mandalay Mayor Brig-Gen Phone Zaw Han and officials.

Senior General Than Shwe and party looked into installation of iron arch frames at the main section of the bridge. They also viewed the charts of Ayeyawady Bridge (Yadanabon).

Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun reported to the Senior General on facts about the bridge, installation of iron frames, and use of existing old bridge.

In-charge of the construction tasks on Sagaing Bank Deputy Superintending Engineer U Hsan Win and in-charge of the construction tasks on Mandalay Bank Deputy Superintending Engineer U Htay Myint briefed the Senior General and party on progress in building the approach structures on Sagaing and Mandalay sides, construction of the approach sections of the bridge, installation of iron arch frames at the main section of the bridge and progress of tasks.

Senior General Than Shwe gave guidance that construction of the bridge is gaining momentum and efforts are to be made to complete the bridge meeting the set standard.
Engineers of Public Works are building four-lane Ayeyawady Bridge (Yadanabon) measuring 5,614 feet long.

At present, construction tasks of the approach bridge on Mandalay bank have been completed by cent per cent, and similar tasks on Sagaing Bank completed nearly cent per cent. Furthermore, the iron arch frames have been installed at the main bridge between RP 5 and RP 6. So far, 824 metres of 1,126 metres of iron frames have been installed.

Afterwards, the Senior General and party oversaw development of Mandalay Kandawgyi Gardens and sanitation tasks along Thingaza Creek in a motorcade.

They also inspected Mandalay Zaygyodaw and its environs and progress of Mandalay .

Secretary-General of the Union Solidarity and Development Association U Htay Oo, Secretariat Members U Aung Thaung and U Thein Zaw, and CEC member U Thein Swe, who accompanied the Senior General, met with the secretary of Mandalay Division USDA and executives, secretaries and executives of Mandalay, PyinOoLwin, Kyaukse, Myingyan and Meiktila District USDAs, trainees of Diploma in Leadership Enhancement Course and USDA members at Mandalay Division USDA Office on 73rd Street at 6 pm.

The Mandalay Division USDA Secretary and officials reported on organizational tasks of the division association and activities in education and social affairs.

Secretary-General U Htay Oo and Secretariat Member U Thein Zaw gave instructions on functions of the association at different levels, and greeted them cordially.

Senior General Than Shwe inspects foundries in Mandalay Industrial Zone-2, calls for improvement of quality of products

YANGON, 26 Dec — Chairman of State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe yesterday inspected foundries of Mandalay Tawwin Industry Co Ltd in the Industrial Zone-2 in Mandalay .

During the tour of inspection, he was accompanied by Member of the State Peace and Development Council General Thura Shwe Mann, Members of SPDC Lt-Gen Ye Myint, Lt-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo and Lt-Gen Tin Aye, Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Vice-Admiral Soe Thein, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Myat Hein, Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of the Central Command Maj-Gen Khin Zaw, Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander of North-West Command Maj-Gen Tha Aye, the ministers, deputy ministers, Mayor of Mandalay City and departmental officials.

At the foundry shop, Senior General Than Shwe and party inspected machinery and parts of machinery produced by the foundry.

Chairman of Mandalay Tawwin Industry Co Ltd U Aung Win Khaing, officials and Secretary of the Industrial Development Committee reported on production of parts of machinery and agricultural implements.

Senior General Than Shwe and party went to Machine Shop-2 and inspected manufactured machinery and production of parts of machinery.

At the Forging Shop, Senior General Than Shwe urged officials concerned to make efforts for improvement of quality of products and for production of high-tech machinery.

He also called for collaborative efforts of industrialists for extended production of machines.

Construction of the foundry of Mandalay Tawwin Industry Co Ltd was completed in July, 2005 and as of 1st August the foundry has produced parts of machinery and agricultural implements.

The foundry has received order for 97 items of machinery from ministries and private industries. So far, it has produced 47 items of machinery numbering about 6,000.
Afterwards, Senior General Than Shwe and party inspected upgrading of roads in Mandalay and beautifying tasks along the moad in a motorcade.

Senior General Than Shwe and party this morning arrived at Maha Lawka Marazein Kuthodaw Pagoda in

Mandalay and inspected extended construction of the southern archway of the pagoda.

Next, they paid homage to the Buddha Image at the southern prayer hall and made cash donation at the pagoda.

Afterwards, the Senior General inspected maintenance of stone inscriptions at the pagoda and all-round renovation of the pagoda.

In the precinct of the pagoda, there are 829 stone inscriptions of the Buddha’s teachings (Sutta, Vinaya and Abhidhamma) and one record stone inscription. They are famous in the world as the World’s largest book. The stone inscription and over 100-year-old star flower trees attracted 33,000 tourists and researchers last year.

Afterwards, Senior General Than Shwe and party went to Nan- myaybontha Sandawyar Sanda Muni Pagoda and inspected all-round renovation of the pagoda. Next, they paid homage to the Buddha Image at the eastern prayer hall and inspected religious stone inscriptions donated by Hermit U Khanti.

At the pagoda, Senior General Than Shwe donated cash to the fund of the pagoda through the Pagoda board of trustees. Senior General Than Shwe and party proceeded to Mandalay Hill and also paid homage to Sutaungpyai Pagoda at the hill and made cash donation.

At the hill, Senior General Than Shwe enjoyed the scenery of Mandalay and greening of Mandalay Hill and inspected the renovation of the pagoda.

Afterwards, Senior General Than Shwe and party went to Maha Thakya Marazein Kyaukdawgyi Pagoda and made cash donation.

They arrived back here this evening by Tatmadaw aircraft. The Senior General went on a tour of Kachin State , Mandalay Division and Magway Division from 11 to 26 December.

During the inspection tour, he inspected the development tasks of human resources, construction of airports and bridges, regional development tasks, hotel and recreation, health care tasks, preservation tasks of cultural heritage, dam projects, environmental conservation tasks and industrial development tasks and gave guidance on the tasks.

He also met with departmental officials, members of the Tatmadaw and their families during the tour.

YANGON , 28 Dec — The graduation parade of the 7th Intake of Defence Services Medical Academy was held at the parade ground of the DSMA here today, with an address by Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe.

Afterwards, the graduate cadet battalions marched past the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services.

The Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services presented Best Cadet Award to Cadet Kyaw Zeya Linn, Excellence in Training Award to Cadet Naing Swe Oo and Excellence in Study Award to Cadet Aung Zaw Htet.

Next, Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe delivered an address at the graduation parade.
